Platinum (Pt) is a highly efficient catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR). However, the scarcity of Pt necessitates the development of catalysts with low Pt content while maintaining high activity. In this study, we report the synthesis of oxygen-modified supra-nanometer-sized RuPt nanocrystals with low Pt content by a simple air annealing method to achieve a catalyst with high activity. The annealed catalyst, RuPt/C-200, exhibits a very low overpotential of only 3.8 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a low Tafel slope of 16.6 mV dec−1, and a 2.8-fold increase in mass activity at an overpotential of 0.06 V for HER compared to the unannealed catalyst. Additionally, the HOR exchange current density increases 2.9-fold compared to the unannealed catalyst. AEMWE tests confirm the application potential of RuPt/C-200, while density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations reveal that oxygen modification, by optimizing the hydrogen binding energy, plays a crucial role in improving the catalytic performance of RuPt. This work highlights that combining the oxygen modification strategy with the nanoscale size effect could advance the development of high-performance RuPt electrocatalyst for both alkaline HER and HOR.

Highly active catalyst for the hydrogen oxidation/evolution reactions (HOR and HER) plays an essential role for the water-to-hydrogen reversible conversion. Currently, increasing attention has been concentrated on developing low-cost, high-activity, and long-life catalytic materials, especially for acid media due to the promise of proton exchange membrane (PEM)-based electrolyzers and polymer electrolyte fuel cells. Although non-precious-metal phosphide (NPMP) catalysts have been widely researched, their electrocatalytic activity toward HER is still not satisfactory compared to that of Pt catalysts. Herein, a series of precious-metal phosphides (PMPs) supported on graphene (rGO), including IrP2-rGO, Rh2P-rGO, RuP-rGO, and Pd3P-rGO, are prepared by a simple, facile, eco-friendly, and scalable approach. As an example, the resultant IrP2-rGO displays better HER electrocatalytic performance and longer durability than the benchmark materials of commercial Pt/C under acidic, neutral, and basic electrolytes. To attain a current density of 10 mA cm–2, IrP2-rGO shows overpotentials of 8, 51, and 13 mV in 0.5 M dilute sulfuric acid, 1.0 M phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), and 1.0 M potassium hydroxide solutions, respectively. Additionally, IrP2-rGO also exhibits exceptional HOR performance in the 0.1 M HClO4 medium. Therefore, this work offers a vital addition to the development of a number of PMPs with excellent activity toward HOR and HER.

The development of hydrogen energy conversion technology offers a solution to the global energy crisis. Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) are essential for hydrogen production and utilization. Ni-based catalysts are promising alternatives to Pt-group catalysts under alkaline conditions. However, pure Ni exhibits low activity due to H 2 O dissociation/formation limitations in the rate-determining Volmer step. To overcome this bottleneck, we present a heterostructure-induced electron modulation strategy to regulate the spatial proximity of key intermediates within the inner Helmholtz plane, thereby facilitating Volmer step kinetics. Electron depletion at the Ni site shifts its d -band center upward, enhancing the adsorption of *H, *OH, and *H 2 O. This electronic tuning brings *H and *OH closer and elongates the H–OH bonds in *H 2 O, effectively reducing the Volmer barrier, as confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) and in-situ Raman spectroscopy. We demonstrate this concept using a representative heterostructure of nickel and tungsten nitride on nickel foam (Ni/WN@NF), which exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity, requiring only 20 mV overpotential to achieve 10 mA cm −2 for HER and reaching an exchange current density of 3.99 mA cm −2 for HOR. This work offers a generalizable interfacial approach for modulating local chemical environments in alkaline hydrogen electrocatalysis.

The development of efficient, stable, and low-cost bifunctional catalysts for the hydrogen evolution/oxidation reaction (HER/HOR) is critical to promote the application of hydrogen gas batteries in large scale energy storage systems. Here we demonstrate a non-noble metal high-entropy alloy grown on Cu foam (NNM-HEA@CF) as a self-supported catalytic electrode for nickel-hydrogen gas (Ni-H2) batteries. Experimental and theoretical calculation results reveal that the NNM-HEA catalyst greatly facilitates the HER/HOR catalytic process through the optimized electronic structures of the active sites. The assembled Ni-H2 battery with NNM-HEA@CF as the anode shows excellent rate capability and exceptional cycling performance of over 1800 h without capacity decay at an areal capacity of 15 mAh cm–2. Furthermore, a scaled-up Ni-H2 battery fabricated with an extended capacity of 0.45 Ah exhibits a high cell-level energy density of ∼109.3 Wh kg–1. Moreover, its estimated cost reaches as low as ∼107.8 $ kWh–1 based on all key components of electrodes, separator and electrolyte, which is reduced by more than 6 times compared to that of the commercial Pt/C-based Ni-H2 battery. This work provides an approach to develop high-efficiency non-noble metal-based bifunctional catalysts for hydrogen batteries in large-scale energy storage applications.

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is the cathodic process of water splitting, and its reverse, the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), is the anodic process of an H 2 -O 2 fuel cell; both play important roles in the development of hydrogen energy. The rational design and scalable fabrication of low-cost and efficient bifunctional catalysts for the HER/HOR are highly desirable. Herein, ultrasmall Mo-Ru nanoalloy (Mo 0.5 Ru 3 and MoRu 3 ) particles uniformly distributed on mesoporous carbon (MPC) were successfully synthesized by a simple method that is easy to scale up for mass production. After the incorporation of Mo atoms, the as-prepared Mo 0.5 Ru 3 and MoRu 3 nanoalloys maintain a hexagonal-close-packed crystal structure. In acidic media, Mo 0.5 Ru 3 exhibits excellent Pt-like HER and HOR activity, as well as good stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the H adsorption free energy (Δ G H* ) on the Mo 0.5 Ru 3 (0 0 1) surface (−0.09 eV) is much closer to zero than that of metallic Ru (−0.22 eV), which contributes to the enhanced catalytic activity. In alkaline media, Mo 0.5 Ru 3 also presents outstanding HER and HOR activity, even significantly outperforming Pt/C. The DFT results confirm that optimal binding energies with H* and OH* intermediate species, and low energy barriers in the water dissociation and formation steps, efficiently accelerate the alkaline HER/HOR kinetics of Mo 0.5 Ru 3 . This study provides a new avenue for the scalable fabrication of high-efficiency bifunctional electrocatalysts for the HER and HOR in both acidic and alkaline media.

The development of efficient catalysts is essential to promote slow hydrogen reaction kinetics in alkaline solutions. Herein, an ultrathin ZIF-derived efficient HOR/HER electrocatalyst , with Co single-atom-anchored RuCo clusters on N-doped graphitized carbon nanosheets (RuCo/SANC NS), is designed and constructed by a step-by-step calcination strategy. In the RuCo/SANC NS, Co atoms dispersed in carbon nanosheets induce the formation of ultrasmall RuCo clusters and stabilize the RuCo clusters. Abundant coordinatively unsaturated Ru sites are formed on the surface of RuCo clusters due to the small size effect. The electronic structure of the Ru site is regulated by the alloying effect with Co, optimizing the adsorption energy to *H and *OH and accelerating the HER/HOR kinetics. The RuCo/SANC NS catalyst exhibits excellent mass activity with HER of 13.58 A/mg Ru and HOR of 3.85 A/mg Ru , which are about 35.35 and 48.13 times that of Pt/C.

The hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) shows fast kinetics in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), and has not drawn intense attention. Here, we propose a tandem electrocatalysis concept, decoupling HOR on two independent active sites for accelerated kinetics. As a proof-of-concept application, a Ru-based tandem HOR catalyst is designed, with Ru nanoclusters decorated with Pt single atoms. Experimental and theoretical studies suggest that H 2 dissociation occurs at Ru sites, and then the produced H species migrate to Pt sites followed by the desorption of H + . The strong Ru-H interaction promotes the H 2 dissociation step, while the optimum Pt-H interaction ensures the fast desorption, thereby substantially enhancing the HOR kinetics. In H 2 –O 2 fuel cells, this catalyst enables a peak power density of 1.91 W cm −2 and a high anodic mass activity of 23.12 A mg −1 at 0.9 V iR-free with an ultralow noble metal loading of 5 μg cm −2 . This work advances the development of low-cost anode catalysts for fuel cells and provides more insight into understanding hydrogen electrocatalysis.

The sluggish kinetics of hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is one of the critical challenges for anion exchange membrane fuel cells. Here, we report epitaxial growth of Ir nanoclusters (<2 nm) on a MoS 2 surface (Ir/MoS 2 ) and optimize the alkaline HOR activity via tailoring interfacial charge transfer between Ir clusters and MoS 2 . The electron transfer from MoS 2 to Ir clusters can effectively prevent the oxidation of Ir clusters, which is not the case for carbon-supported Ir nanoclusters (Ir/C) synthesized using the same method. Moreover, the HOR performance of the Ir/MoS 2 can be further optimized by tuning the hydrogen binding energy (HBE) via a precise annealing treatment. A substantial exchange current density of 1.28 mA cm ECSA −2 is achieved in the alkaline medium, which is ∼10 times over that of Ir/C. The HOR mass-specific activity of Ir/MoS 2 heterostructure is as high as 182 mA mg Ir −1 . The experimental results and density functional theory calculations reveal that the significant improved HOR activity is attributed to the decreased HBE, which highlights epitaxial growth is an effective way for boosting catalytic activity of heterostructured catalysts.
