Influence of CMC, HPMC, and CNF on Performance of Corrugated Base Paper

Lihong Gao,Xinpeng Zhao,Qingbo Zhou,Huaying Li,Haibin Yu

Graphical This paper prepares expanded rice straw through a single-screw steam explosion method, and then uses the expanded rice straw to prepare corrugated base paper, and explores the effects of carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and cellulose nanofibers on the mechanical properties of corrugated base paper. Corrugated base paper under optimal conditions is selected for SEM, DSC, TG, FTIR, and other characterizations. This study aims to comprehensively examine the influence of three distinct additives, namely carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), and cellulose nanofibers (CNF), on the performance enhancement of corrugated base paper. For this purpose, steam-exploded rice straw was treated with varying concentrations (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 wt%) of CMC, HPMC and CNF. Analysis of the rice straw pre and post expansion, as well as the modified corrugated base paper, was conducted using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), tensile performance testing, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results indicated that adding CMC, CNF, and HPMC to corrugated base paper significantly improved bonding between paper layers, particularly at 2 %, 6 %, and 8 % concentrations, respectively. This enhancement notably increased tensile strength and elastic modulus of the corrugated base paper. Tensile performance saw increases of 57.76 %, 59.01 %, and 60.25 %, while elastic modulus showed increments of 52.7 %, 9.4 %, and 136.69 %, respectively. These findings provide valuable insights for the preparation of corrugated base paper and highlight the potential of CMC, HPMC, and CNF in enhancing paper mechanical properties.

Constructing highly conductive silver layers on hydrophobic PET fabrics through synergetic pretreatment of reducing agents and HPMC

Qian Zhou,Hao Feng,Lei Fang,Wei Bao,Kuanjun Fang

The development of wearable electronics, energy storage, and smart sensing has significantly increased the demand for highly conductive circuits on textiles. Silver (Ag) is a preferred material due to its excellent electrical conductivity, antibacterial properties, and biocompatibility. However, the hydrophobic nature and low surface energy of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabrics pose challenges for the adhesion of silver particles, limiting the mechanical durability and washability of conductive layers. This study proposes a novel strategy combining the synergetic pretreatment of PET fabrics using reducing agents (ascorbic acid and glucose) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) to enhance the deposition of silver layers. The reducing agents facilitate the conversion of silver ions to metallic silver, while HPMC forms a uniform film on the fabric surface, providing anchoring points for silver particles through hydrogen bonding. The resulting silver layers exhibit high conductivity, uniformity, and durability, as confirmed by SEM, XRD, and XPS analyses. The treated fabrics demonstrate low electrical resistance and excellent abrasion resistance after multiple washes and rubbing. This method offers a simple, scalable, and cost-effective approach for constructing conductive textiles, with potential applications in wearable electronics and smart sensing.

Effect of PVP and HPMC on production of indomethacin amorphous nanoparticles: experiments and molecular dynamics simulations

Wenhui Zhou,Mengmeng Han,Haosen Zhang,Tianwei Zhang,Haiyun Tian,Tingting Yang,Tao Liu

Objective This study investigated the effect of molecular interactions between drug and polymers on preparation of nanoamorphous indomethacin (IND) through milling of solid dispersions (SDs).Significance The polymer selection (molecular interaction) emerged as a critical factor in the dynamic milling process for achieving nanoamorphous drug. Methods Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) were selected as models. Amorphous dispersions were used to prepare nanoamorphous drugs by applying wet milling. Molecular simulations were employed to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of drug–polymer miscibility, interaction energy, and molecular migration. Results Both PVP and HPMC related SDs could be nanosized after milling. The rate of size reduction might be related to the solid state of the dispersions. The combination of amorphous PVP SDs with reduced particle size significantly improved the dissolution rate of IND. However, HPMC-based samples exhibited recrystallization during milling. Molecular simulation indicated that PVP formed strong molecular interaction with the drug to maintain the amorphous form, which contributed to avoid recrystallization induced by the external milling forces. The radial distribution function of hydrated IND/HPMC amorphous cells demonstrated the absence of hydrogen bonding interactions between IND and HPMC.Conclusion PVP contributed to maintain the amorphous state during the milling process, which resulted from the higher molecular binding energy compared to HPMC. Controlled milling of amorphous SD with optimized polymer selection could simultaneously achieve nanoamorphous particle and enhanced dissolution rate.

Enhanced nitrate reduction by HPMC-stabilized nanoscale zero-valent iron (H-NZVI): synthesis, characterization and reaction kinetics

Da Ma,Xusheng Li,Huian Zou,Yi Qian,Mengqi Li,Wenchuan Xu

Nano zero-valent iron (NZVI) was successfully stabilized by using hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC). Systematic characterization observations (including XRD, TEM, FTIR, and VSM), as well as settling performance, illustrated that, compared to bare nano zero-valent iron particles (NZVI), the dispersity and antioxidizability of HPMC-stabilized nanoscale zero-valent iron particles (H-NZVI) were improved. Nitrate reduction efficiencies by using iron powder, NZVI, H-NZVI-5, H-NZVI-10, and H-NZVI-20 were examined, and the results showed that a moderate amount of HPMC in modification can help prevent the aggregation of NZVI and achieve high reduction efficiency. Excessive HPMC in preparation led to a decline in reduction efficiency. In addition, effects of initial pH, dissolved oxygen concentrations, and reaction temperatures on nitrate removal were studied. The results showed that the efficiency decreased with increases in initial pH and dissolved oxygen concentrations. However, the stabilized NZVI showed great superiority to bare NZVI, maintaining high activity even at basic pH or aerobic conditions. Pseudo first-order kinetics was applied to study nitrate reduction kinetics and confirmed to correlate well with experimental data. Through analysis of rate constants at different temperatures, the apparent activation energy for nitrate reduction by H-NZVI-10 was calculated to be approximately 15.18   kJ/mol. This study demonstrates that HPMC-stabilized NZVI can serve as a promising nanomaterial for enhancing nitrate reduction of nitrate.

Modifying Cotton Fabric Properties by Controlling HPMC Viscosity Grade to Limit Ink Spreading and Penetration

Zhiyuan Tang,Xueyuan Yang,Kun Zhang,Kuanjun Fang

In cotton fabric inkjet printing, the spreading and penetration of the ink seriously damage printing resolution and color strength. In this study, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) with varying viscosity grades (6, 30, 100, 400, and 4000 mPa·s) were used for fabric pretreatment to reduce the ink spreading and penetration. The results indicated that HPMC with a high viscosity grade enhanced the ability of pretreatment paste to form a continuous HPMC film on the fiber surface. A continuous film could greatly increase the hydrophobicity of the fabric, thereby restricting the spreading and penetration of ink. Meanwhile, ink migration was also limited by the paste connected to the fibers and the swelling of the film, which was more significant at higher HPMC viscosity grades. However, the increase of the HPMC viscosity grade was not conducive to dye fixation. Additionally, HPMC with a viscosity grade of 100 mPa·s was considered a reasonable choice, which could improve printing resolution and color strength in industrial applications. This research provides a new approach for optimizing pretreatment paste to achieve high-quality printed products.

Accelerated stability modeling of recrystallization from amorphous solid Dispersions: A Griseofulvin/HPMC-AS case study

Ariana Sheng-Chu Leon,Kenneth C. Waterman,Guanhua Wang,Likun Wang,Ting Cai,Xiaohua Zhang

Amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) represent an important approach for enhancing oral bioavailability for poorly water soluble compounds; however, assuring that these ASDs do not recrystallize to a significant extent during storage can be time-consuming. Therefore, various efforts have been undertaken to predict ASD crystallization levels with kinetic models. However, only limited success has been achieved due to limits on crystal content quantification methods and the complexity of crystallization kinetics . To increase the prediction accuracy, the accelerated stability assessment program (ASAP), employing isoconversion (time to hit a specification limit) and a modified Arrhenius approach, are employed here for predictive shelf-life modeling. In the current study, a model ASD was prepared by spray drying griseofulvin and HPMC-AS-LF. This ASD was stressed under a designed combinations of temperature, relative humidity and time with the conditions set to ensure stressing was carried out below the glass transition temperature (T g ) of the ASD. Crystal content quantification method by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) with sufficient sensitivity was developed and employed for stressed ASD. Crystallization modeling of the griseofulvin ASD using ASAP prime ® demonstrated good agreement with long-term (40 °C/75 %RH) crystallinity levels and support the use of this type of accelerated stability studies for further improving ASD shelf-life prediction accuracy.

Eco-friendly transparent conductive films formed by silver nanowires embedded with conductive polymers in HPMC for flexible OLEDs

Peng-Fei Qian,Wen-Hao Geng,Ze-Long Bao,Li-Chao Jing,Di Zhang,Hong-Zhang Geng

In this study, gentianic acid (GtA) was first doped into poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrene-sulfonic) (PEDOT:PSS), and the doped PEDOT:PSS (GP) was spin-coated as a hydrophilic layer on the surface of relatively hydrophobic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films. After that, silver nanowires (AgNWs) aqueous dispersion and hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) solution were coated over the surface of PET films. Finally, the GP/AgNWs/HPMC flexible conductive films were stripped from the PET surface, achieving a high visible light transmittance (81.5 % at 550 nm) with low sheet resistance (4.2 Ω/□). By embedding AgNWs on the surface of the HPMC film, the surface roughness ( R q) of this flexible transparent conductive film (TCF) was as low as 3.2 nm, meeting the requirements for the fabrication of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices. The OLED device fabricated via using this TCF as the anode achieved a maximum brightness ( L max ) of 13,740 cd/m 2 , a maximum current efficiency ( C.E. max ) of 10.6 cd/A, a maximum power efficiency ( P.E. max ) of 5.5 lm/W and a maximum external quantum efficiency ( EQE max ) of 2.9 %. Furthermore, HPMC demonstrated solubility in water at ambient temperature, facilitating the recycling of AgNWS and mitigating environmental pollution. These findings provide a new scope for the application of TCF in recyclable flexible electronic devices.

Grafted copolymers based on HPMC with excellent thermo-viscosifying and salt-tolerant properties at low concentration for enhanced oil recovery

Pan Xiong,Yanyan Niu,Fanjun Meng,Qinglin Ma,Cui Song,Qian Zhang,Yuju Che

The conventional acrylamide-based polymers are greatly restricted under the reservoir conditions of high temperature and high salt due to their linear molecular structures. In this article, a grafted water-soluble copolymer based on hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) with excellent thermal viscosifying and salt-tolerant properties at low concentration was prepared via the “graft from” method, with acrylamide (AM) and methyl allyl polyoxyethylene ether (HPEG) as grafted monomers . The structure of the copolymer was identified by 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The basic displacement properties of the copolymers under extreme conditions were systematically studied. The results showed that due to the symbiotic effects of the rigid heterocyclic structure of HPMC and the hydrophobic inter-molecular aggregation of thermosensitive HPEG units in the copolymer chain, the copolymer exhibited better thermal thickening ability (the viscosity enhancements changes from 7.1 to 19.9 times from 25 °C to 95 °C in brine solution with total salinity 9350.08 mg.L −1 ), salt resistance (the viscosity enhancements changes from 1.13 to 2.29 times with salts concentration from 0.0 wt% to 2.0 wt% at 85 °C), shear tolerance (the viscosity retention rate was from 18.6% to 24.2% at 1000s −1 ) and anti-aging properties (the viscosity retention rate up to 73.7% at 65 °C for three weeks) than polyacrylamide at low concentration (0.2 wt%). Furthermore, the polymer flooding test showed that the copolymer yielded a higher recovery rate of 23.2% higher than that yielded by polyacrylamide (14.5%), elucidating that the copolymer synthesized herein was suitable for enhanced oil recovery in reservoirs with severe conditions.

Synthesis and gelation properties of HPMC-g-poly(AM/AA/APEG2400) quaternary copolymer

Yi Zong,Pan Xu,Haoyu Yue,Xinxue Li

To improve the stability of the polymers applied to profile control in high-temperature and high-salinity reservoirs, a water-soluble graft-copolymer HPMC-g-poly(AM/AA/APEG2400) was synthesized from hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC), acrylamide (AM), acrylic acid (AA), and allyl polyoxyethylene ether (APEG2400) via free-radical copolymerization using potassium persulfate (KPS) as the initiator. The molecular weight (M w ) of HPMC-g-poly(AM/AA/APEG2400) was controlled by the addition of the chain-transfer agent, sodium formate (SF), to the polymerization medium and was measured by capillary viscometry. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed to characterize the graft-copolymer. The rheological properties of the graft-copolymer were investigated at different salinities and temperatures. The graft-copolymer solution showed better salt resistance, temperature tolerance, and long-term thermal stability than partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM). In addition, hydrogels were prepared using the graft-copolymer with varying M w (346 × 10 4 –1319 × 10 4 ), a crosslinker (hexamethylenetetramine–resorcinol, (HMTA–RC)), and additives (citric acid, (CA), and ammonium phosphate monobasic, (MAP)), and the hydrogels exhibited adequate strength and tunable gelation time. The hydrogels prepared using the graft-copolymer with high M w possessed excellent long-term stabilities with negligible syneresis at 45 °C after 130 d, for the same conditions, the syneresis of conventional hydrogels prepared by HPAM reached approximately 90%.

Research on Ternary Solid Dispersions of Celecoxib with Surfactant: Preparation, Characterization, and Solubility Property

Li T.,Fu X.,Wang Y.,Ouyang F.,Liu L.,Wen M.,Zha G.,Zhu L.

Abstract Celecoxib (CXB) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). However, the application of CXB has been compromised by its poor aqueous solubility and low oral bioavailability. We developed a series of ternary solid dispersions (SDs) of CXB to increase its solubility. In this study, the polymers were screened to determine that they have the potential to increase the solubility of CXB in the solution. A hydrophilic polymer-hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and a surfactant Tween80 were employed as matrix respectively in the optimized formulations. Experimental data revealed that CXB was molecularly distributed within all dispersions in amorphous form by using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Polarizing Light Microscopy (PLM), and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) results showed that the characteristic peaks of CXB have shifted. Compared with pure CXB, the addition of excipients can reduce the contact angle, and improve the solubility of CXB. Ternary SDs were dissolved in PBS (pH 6.8) and formed drug-carrying nanoparticles. In vitro dissolution results indicated that the dissolution amount of HPMC-CXB 5 : 1 SD (32.08±1.56% for 120 min) was higher than pure CXB (3.09±0.29%). In particular, the greatest dissolution enhancement was obtained from the test of which the result was HPMC/Tween80-CXB 3 : 2 : 1 SD (44.12±2.01% for 120 min). This study showed that ternary SDs could be a promising strategy for improving CXB dissolution.

A polymer electrolyte based on poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropylene)/hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose blending for lithium-ion battery

Ran Ying,Yin Zhoulan,Ding Zhiying,Guo Huajun,Yang Jing

A polymer electrolyte based on the blending of poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropylene) (PVDF-HFP) and hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) was prepared for the first time. The structure and performance of the gel polymer electrolyte were characterized and measured by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, linear sweep voltammetry, and by a charge/discharge test. The results show that the gel polymer electrolyte has the best performance when PVDF-HFP/HPMC ratio ( w / w ) is 4:1. At room temperature, the ionic conductivity can reach 0.38 × 10 −3 S cm −1 , the electrochemical stable window is up to 5.0 V (vs. Li/Li + ), and the half cell of Li/GPE/LiMn 2 O 4 shows high-discharge-specific capacity and good cycling performance.

Uncovering crystal growth and regeneration mechanism to control crystal morphology: The case study of aceclofenac

Longping Jiang,Wenqian Chen,Limin Zhou,Li Xu,Feiqiang He,Jerry Y.Y. Heng,Hamza Shehzad,Jinbo Ouyang

The study of crystal growth and regeneration mechanisms is of great significance for controlling the morphology of crystals. Through the investigation of the recovery and regrowth processes of crystals, we have revealed the regeneration mechanism of aceclofenac (ACF) crystals and the influence of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) on the regeneration of ACF crystals. Firstly, ACF crystal regeneration experiments were conducted in acetone (ACT) and methyl acetate (MA), and it was found that the broken crystals could be successfully regenerated and restored to their original morphology, the regenerated ACF crystals in MA exhibited a larger aspect ratio. Secondly, the crystals obtained from the two solvents were placed in different solvents for regrowth, and it was shown that solvent was a key factor influencing the aspect ratio of ACF crystals. Additionally, HPMC was used to regulate the crystal morphology , it was found that the best effect was achieved when the mass fraction of HPMC was 0.5%, resulting in a regenerated crystal with an aspect ratio of only 2.19. Molecular simulation results indicated that the interaction between the radial (1   1   0) crystal facet and the solvent was weaker than that with the axial (1 0 -1) crystal facet, leading to a higher radial growth rate and a larger aspect ratio of the crystal. However, after adding HPMC, the interaction between HPMC and the radial (1 1 -1) and (1   1   0) crystal facets became stronger. HPMC selectively adsorbed on these two crystal facets, ultimately resulting in crystals with a smaller aspect ratio. The research findings of this study will provide theoretical basis for solving the problem of difficult morphology control due to crystal fragmentation in the pharmaceutical industry production process.
