Lithium (Li) reserves in liquid resources are significantly higher than solid lithium ores and can fully meet the growing demand for Li. Lithium-ion sieves (LIS) adsorption of Li from liquid resources is one of the most promising methods. However, conventional polymeric adsorption materials encapsulate most LIS in dense structures, leading to low adsorption capacity and slow adsorption rate. Therefore, HTO-PVA/PAAm hydrogel was synthesized from titanium-type lithium-ion sieves (HTO), acrylamide, and polyvinyl alcohol by free radical polymerization. The HTO-PVA/PAAm hydrogel is characterized by a soft three-dimensional (3D) network, continuously adjustable pore structure, high specific surface area, and excellent hydrophilicity. Accordingly, the HTO-PVA/PAAm owns an excellent Li + adsorption capacity (22.16 and 31.31 mg·g −1 in pH 7.2 and 12 of LiCl solutions, respectively) among reported advanced adsorbents. 90 % of Li + is desorbed within 60 min, indicating the efficient and rapid Li + desorption response of the hydrogel. Meanwhile, this hydrogel still maintains a Li + adsorption capacity of 90 % after eight adsorption-desorption cycles, during which Ti loss is <0.42 % in each cycle. In this work, HTO-PVA/PAAm hydrogel synthesized by an environmentally friendly and low-cost approach shows great application potential as a new strategy for Li + adsorption from liquid resources.

Spinel-type titanium-based lithium-ion sieve H 4 Ti 5 O 12 has excellent theoretical adsorption capacity and selectivity. Still, spinel-type lithium adsorbents prepared in existing studies have poor adsorption, poor recyclability, and difficulty in recovery. To solve the above problems, composite mesoporous ion sieves, Polyvinyl Butyral-H 4 Ti 5 O 12 –1 (PVB-HTO-1) modified with dual surfactants, were synthesized for the first time in this paper. Hydrophilic lithium-ion sieve HTO-1 with a mesoporous structure was synthesized by adding two surfactants, CTAB and F127. Then the modified ion sieve was composited with PVB to make a fine rod-like composite material, PVB-HTO-1, with a diameter of no more than 0.5 mm, to solve the limitation of the industrial application that the recycling of powdered ion sieve is difficult. The bi-component surfactant-derived ion sieve, PVB-HTO-1, exhibits superior hydrophilicity and possesses a porous mesoporous framework that facilitates ion exchange processes, achieving adsorption equilibrium within a timeframe of three hours. It demonstrates a remarkable maximum adsorption capacity of 53.25 mg/g. Even after undergoing five cycles of adsorption and desorption, the material's adsorption capacity remains at over 90 % of its initial value, indicative of its robust cyclic stability. The uptake of Li + ions by PVB-HTO-1 aligns with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and conforms to the Langmuir isothermal adsorption model.

The titanium-based lithium ion sieve (HTO), renowned for its exceptional adsorption performance and cyclic stability, was utilized in addressing the global shortage of lithium resources. However, the recovery and reuse efficiency of HTO in powder form is relatively low, which limits its application in industrial fields. To address this issue, this study utilized carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as the principal matrix material, while polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) played a dual function as both matrix and crosslinker, negating the necessity for supplementary crosslinking materials. Employing water as the only solvent, HTO was embedded into the CMC-PVA blended film matrix. It was observed that augmenting the CMC content substantially elevates the adsorptive capability of the film. However, this enhancement comes at the cost of reduced mechanical robustness and diminished stability in solution. Consequently, by balancing the influence of adsorptive capacity and stability through fine-tuning the CMC-to-PVA ratio. Even when HTO powder is encapsulated within the film, the adsorption film retains the excellent adsorption properties of HTO, achieving an adsorption capacity for lithium of 29.21 mg g −1 within 12 h. This study provides an innovative pathway and ideas for the large-scale, low-cost production of sustainable lithium-ion adsorption materials.

The operational efficiency and long-term reliability of photovoltaic (PV) panels are significantly compromised by overheating. To alleviate this issue, this work pioneered a tri-functional hybrid system addressing PV overheating, freshwater scarcity, and lithium extraction challenges. By laminating hydrous titanium oxide (HTO)-functionalized fibers (HTO@fiber) onto PV panels, the integrated system simultaneously enables: (i) evaporative cooling reducing PV temperatures by up to 16.4 °C under one-sun illumination, thereby achieving a peak power output enhancement of 12.5 % through suppressed carrier recombination and widened semiconductor bandgaps; (ii) targeted lithium extraction leveraging evaporation-induced interfacial concentration polarization and waste-heat-activated endothermic adsorption kinetics, achieving optimal lithium cation uptake capacities of 17.81 mg·g −1 with high selectivity in real brines, conforming to pseudo-second-order chemisorption models; and (iii) sustainable desalination yielding freshwater at 1.680 kg·m −2 ·h −1 under one sun. Outdoor validation over five days demonstrated practical viability with daily averages of 5.79 kg·m −2 freshwater production and up to 4.75 g·g −1 lithium cation recovery, underpinned by HTO@fiber's stability (<10 % capacity loss after 5 cycles) and efficient capillary transport. This integrated paradigm converts PV operational liabilities — thermal dissipation and land footprint — into synergistic resource recovery, establishing a scalable approach to enhance solar infrastructure economics while advancing water-energy-lithium nexus sustainability.

The real-time detection of gaseous H 2 O and its typical isotopic molecules, e.g., H 2 18 O, D 2 O, HDO, and HTO, is highly desirable in many fundamental scientific studies and practical monitoring, such as mechanistic studies of H 2 O-involved chemical reactions and radiation risk warning of abnormal HTO emissions. However, ionization methods for mass spectrometry (MS) to directly measure isotopic water molecules are limited, and the discrimination of those with similar molecular weights (MWs) usually requires the use of high-resolution mass spectrometers. In this study, we present a highly efficient ionization method for water vapor based on a photoinduced associative ionization (PAI) reaction, where one excited-state CH 2 Cl 2 ∗ reacts with two H 2 O molecules to transfer a proton from one H 2 O molecule to another (i.e., the analyte). Benefit to the distinctive ionization pathway, different featured ions of H 2 O, D 2 O, and H 2 18 O were observed. Surprisingly, each isotopic water molecule has its own unique PAI mass spectrum pattern according to the same ionization principle, which offers a convenient method for distinguishing isotopic water molecules with similar MWs, such as D 2 O, H 2 18 O, and HTO (20 Da), without the need for high-resolution mass spectrometers. The measured detection sensitivities of a laboratory-built PAI time-of-flight mass spectrometer towards D 2 O and H 2 18 O were 1465.1 ± 37.0 and 1324.4 ± 86.4 counts ppbv −1 , respectively, in a detection time of 10 s. The corresponding 3σ LODs were 0.10 and 0.11 ppbv, respectively. This study provides a novel ionization method for the direct detection and discrimination of isotopic water molecules, which has potential to combine with portable MS for on-site measurements.

A Hofmann-degraded HTO/CMC/PVA composite film solves powdered HTO’s solid-liquid separation issue via a dense cross-linked network. • Protonated primary amine groups boost lithium selectivity by nearly twofold through the Donnan exclusion effect. • Superior lithium adsorption in real samples, retaining 91.3% capacity after six adsorption-desorption cycles. Rapid global new energy development fuels explosive lithium demand, with efficient purification of salt lake brine and battery leachate a research hotspot. Liquid-phase lithium recovery is severely hindered by coexisting metal ions with ionic radii similar to lithium, leading to high system complexity. Although powdered H 2 TiO 3 (HTO) lithium ion sieves have inherent advantages of stable structure and excellent adsorption capacity, they face critical technical bottlenecks including low solid-liquid separation efficiency and easy co-adsorption by high-valence interfering ions. To solve these problems, this study modified polyacrylamide (PAM) through Hofmann degradation reaction to introduce primary amine groups, and further compounded modified PAM with carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to prepare an HTO-loaded CMC/PVA/PAM composite adsorption film. The film forms a dense cross-linked network via intermolecular hydrogen bonds among the three polymers, fundamentally solving the solid-liquid separation issue of powdered HTO. In an alkaline adsorption environment (pH < 10.5), primary amine groups on modified PAM are protonated to form positive charge sites, which exert the Donnan exclusion effect through electrostatic repulsion to effectively inhibit co-adsorption of magnesium, cobalt, manganese and nickel ions, raising the lithium selective separation efficiency of HTO/CPP2 by nearly twofold compared with HTO/CP. The film showed outstanding specific adsorption performance in actual Da Qaidam Salt Lake water samples and waste battery residue leachate, with good cycling stability that retains 91.3% of the initial adsorption capacity after six cycles. This research thus provides a novel and feasible technical solution for the integrated green extraction of high-purity lithium from two typical complex lithium-containing systems. Quantitative calculation based on the joint action of anion exclusion and sorption has not been reported. This article studies the diffusion behavior of Se(IV) in MX-80 bentonite fills in different lengths by the through-diffusion method. The anion exclusion and sorption are simultaneously considered and quantitatively calculated. The results show that the effective diffusion coefficient of Se(IV) decreases with the increasing lengths of bentonite plug, because of the joint action of anion exclusion and sorption. On this basis, the anion exclusion and sorption are first quantitatively calculated, then a new theory for calculation is proposed in this article. The calculation results show that the ratio of anion exclusion and sorption. In groundwaterenvironments and seawaterenvironments, the weight of sorption is lower than anion exclusion in diffusion process.

Deep purification of heavy metals from complex aqueous matrices is a critical challenge in water remediation. In this study, a novel hierarchical adsorbent (RS-PSS/PEI-HTO) was developed by self-assembling poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS), polyethyleneimine (PEI), and hydrated titanium oxide (HTO) onto rice straw. This ternary coating transformed the low-value biomass into a high-performance sequestration platform with enhanced structural integrity. System characterization (SEM-EDS, FTIR, and TGA) confirmed the successful formation of a stable interface with uniformly dispersed HTO nanoparticles mediated by the amine-rich PEI layer. Batch equilibrium studies revealed that the adsorption process followed the Langmuir model with an exceptionally high affinity constant (K L = 31.16 L/mg), enabling the capture of trace Cu(II) to near-zero residual levels. The adsorption mechanism was driven by the synergistic interaction of the ternary components: electrostatic pre-enrichment by PSS, high-density amine chelation by PEI, and specific metal–oxygen coordination by HTO. The composite maintained high selectivity for Cu(II) despite a 20-fold molar excess of Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ . Fixed-bed column studies validated its efficacy, reaching a breakthrough point of 225 Bed Volumes (BV) while keeping effluent Cu(II) below 0.1 mg/L, a five-fold improvement over binary RS-HTO. The exhausted adsorbent was easily regenerated with HCl-NaCl, demonstrating excellent stability and reusability. This research provides a sustainable "waste-to-wealth" paradigm for engineering high-affinity materials tailored for the deep purification of heavy-metal-contaminated wastewater.
