Novel cyclodextrin-modified h-BN@Pd(II) nanomaterial: An efficient and recoverable catalyst for ligand-free C-C cross-coupling reactions in water

Xiaojun Ma,Guanghui Lv,Xu Cheng,Weijian Li,Rui Sang,Yong Zhang,Qiantao Wang,Li Hai,Yong Wu

An environmentally friendly palladium(II) catalyst supported on cyclodextrin-modified h-BN was successfully prepared. The catalyst was characterized by FT-IR, SEM, TG, XRD and XPS, and the loading level of Pd in h-BN@β-CD@Pd(II) was measured to be 0.088 mmol g −1 by ICP. It exhibits excellent catalytic activity for the Suzuki and Heck reactions in water, and can be easily separated and consecutively reused for at least nine times. In addition, a series of pharmacologically interesting products were successfully synthesized using this catalyst to demonstrate its potential applications in pharmaceutical industries. Above all, this work opens up an interesting and attractive avenue for the use of cyclodextrin-functionalized h-BN as an efficient support for hydrophilic heterogeneous catalysts.

Cobalt(II)-Catalyzed Selective C2–H Heck Reaction of Native (N–H) Indoles Enabled by Salicylaldehyde Ligand

Jia-Wei Li,Shuai Shi,Xiao-Hong Chen,Mao-Gui Huang,Yong-Liang Ban,Hui Zhang,Yue-Jin Liu

Direct functionalization of native (N–H) indoles via C–H activation remains a challenge. Herein, we report a salicylaldehyde-promoted cobalt-catalyzed selective C2–H Heck reaction of native (N–H) indoles with both active and unactivated olefins in the presence of free N–H bonds. A series of structurally diverse C2-alkenylated native (N–H) indoles including natural product and drug derivatives were prepared directly and effectively without additional preprotection and deprotection procedures.

Enhancing the catalytic efficiency of the Heck coupling reaction by forming 5 nm Pd octahedrons using kinetic control

Long Ran,Wu Di,Li Yaping,Bai Yu,Wang Chengming,Song Li,Xiong Yujie

Heterogeneous catalysis occurs through a process of interfacial reactions; therefore, both surface facet and size control can increase catalytic efficiency. Octahedral Pd nanocrystals, enclosed by {111} facets, should be the ideal geometrical shape for Heck coupling reactions; however, it is challenging to synthesize 5 nm Pd octahedrons with a relatively uniform size distribution using existing capping-agent techniques. Here, we used palladium as a model system to investigate how the kinetics of atomic addition could be precisely controlled using a syringe pump. As a result, our method produced Pd octahedrons as small as 5 nm, which increased the catalytic efficiency of Heck coupling reactions while reducing the weight of catalyst used.

Facile one-pot synthesis of superfine palladium nanoparticles on polydopamine-functionalized carbon nanotubes as a nanocatalyst for the Heck reaction

Zhengxiu Luo,Ning Wang,Xiaoyan Pei,Tao Dai,Zhigang Zhao,Congmei Chen,Maofei Ran,Wenjing Sun

Heterogeneous Pd nanocatalysts are efficient catalysts for the Heck reaction but require multi-step, sophisticated procedures and harsh reaction conditions. In this work, a green and facile strategy has been developed to decorate Pd nanoparticles on polydopamine (PDA)-coated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Pd/CNTs-PDA) via a one-pot method. The obtained nanoparticles were characterized by various techniques including transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which proved that Pd NPs are well-dispersed on the PDA and between the surfaces of the PDA and CNTs. The resultant Pd/CNTs-PDA catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic reactivity toward the Heck reaction at low temperatures. Moreover, by DFT simulation, we found that during the PDA polymerization process, a large number of unsaturated N and C O species are more active than the groups on the PDA end product to anchor Pd NPs. The results provide evidence that the catalyst synthesized by the one-pot method exhibited good activity because sufficient active sites could be created to effectively promote Pd NPs dispersion during the dopamine polymerization process. Additionally, the Pd/CNTs-PDA catalyst was successfully employed in Heck cross-coupling reactions with various functionalized substrates. This method opens a window for the fabrication of high-performance nanocomposite catalysts under mild conditions using simple methods and has several potential applications.

Nitrogen ligands in two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks for metal catalysis

Jianqiang Zhang,Yongsheng Peng,Wenguang Leng,Yanan Gao,Feifei Xu,Jinling Chai

We introduced bipyridine ligands into a series of two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) using 2,2′-bipyridine-5,5′-dicarbaldehyde (2,2′-BPyDCA) as a component in the mixed building blocks. The framework of the COFs was formed by the linkage of imine groups. The ligand content in the COFs was synthetically tuned by the content of 2,2′-BPyDCA, and thus the amount of metal, palladium(II) acetate, bonded to the nitrogen ligands could be manipulated. Both the bipyridine ligands and imine groups can coordinate with Pd(II) ions, but the loading position can be varied, with one ligand favoring binding in the space between adjacent COFs′ layers and the other ligand favoring binding within the pores of the COFs. The Pd(II)-loaded COFs exhibited good catalytic activity for the Heck reaction.

A novel Ti³⁺-mediated approach for supporting palladium on anodic TiO2 nanotubes: Toward efficient and recyclable catalysis in the heck reaction

Haitao Zhang,Ningchen Ye,Runzhe Dong,Qing Li,Zheng Wang,Zifei Gao,Xiang Ji,Lin Liu,Juanjuan Ma,Zhiwei Tong

A simple electrochemical reduction technique was employed to generate Ti 3+ with strong reducing property on the anodic TiO 2 nanotubes (ATNTs). Utilizing Ti 3+ as the reducing agent, Pd 2+ was successfully reduced in situ to Pd 0 on the anodic TiO 2 nanotubes (Pd@ATNTs). Various characterization methods were employed to confirm that the proportion of Ti 3+ and the size of Pd nanoparticles could be controlled by adjusting the electrochemical reduction voltage. The obtained [email protected] exhibited satisfactory catalytic efficiency (TOF: 1302 h −1 ) in the Heck reaction between various aryl halides and olefins. Furthermore, [email protected] demonstrated high stability, with no significant loss of catalytic activity observed even after six cycles.

Controllable preparation of one-dimensional hybrid catalytic materials of nickel nanoparticles/porous carbon fibers and study of their performance as catalyst for Heck reaction

Zhu Ying,Bai Jie,Li Chunping,Wang Junzhong

Ni(0) porous carbon nanofibers (Ni(0)/PCNFs) were successfully synthesized by a simple electrospinning technique with subsequent process of reduction and calcination. The as-prepared continuous Ni(0)/PCNFs which had a uniform particles diameter of 5 nm and porous structure were adopted as a catalyst in Heck reaction, which effectively improved the conversion and the selectivity of the product. Compared with Ni(0) supported on carbon nanofibers, the solid nanoporous catalyst obviously increases the efficiency of Heck reaction and also does not require ligands. Though five recycles, the catalyst remained a high catalytic activity.

Cobalt, nickel and iron embedded chitosan microparticles as efficient and reusable catalysts for Heck cross-coupling reactions

Yehang Bao,Linjun Shao,Guiying Xing,Chenze Qi

Cobalt, nickel and iron are efficient catalysts for numerous chemical and biological reactions, but they are hardly immobilized on solid matrixes due to their relatively weak chelation with the surface molecules. We have employed a co-electrospraying coupling with glutaraldehyde cross-linking technique to prepare cobalt (Co 2+ ), nickel (Ni 2+ ) and iron (Fe 2+ ) catalyst embedded chitosan microparticles (M@MicroCS) (M = Co, Ni and Fe). The Co@MicroCS beads exhibited excellent catalytic activity for the Heck cross-coupling reactions of aromatic iodides with alkenes. Moreover, the Co@MicroCS bead catalyst could be even reused at least for five times without significant loss of the catalytic activities. The average diameter of the free volume holes for the porous Co@MicroCS beads was determined to be much larger than the size of the reactant and product molecules, allowing them to freely migrate through the catalytic sites inside the chitosan beads. These results clearly indicate that the Heck reactions catalyzed by the Co@MicroCS beads primarily occurs inside the porous chitosan beads. Taken together, we have demonstrated a straightforward approach to prepare efficient and recyclable heterogeneous catalysts derived from the first-row transition metal catalysts by entrapping them inside the chitosan microparticles.

Pd Nanoparticles in the Thermoregulated Ionic Liquid and Organic Biphasic System: An Efficient and Recyclable Catalyst for Heck Reaction

Zeng Yan,Wang Yanhua,Xu Yicheng,Song Ying,Jiang Jingyang,Jin Zilin

Abstract A thermoregulated ionic liquid and organic biphasic system composed of ionic liquid [CH 3 (OCH 2 CH 2 ) 16 N + Et 3 ][CH 3 SO 3 − ] (IL PEG750 ) with IL PEG750 -stabilized Pd nanoparticles and organic solvents, which allows for not only a highly efficient homogeneous catalytic reaction, but also an easy biphasic separation and reuse of catalyst attributed to the thermoregulated phase-transition property of the system, was employed for Heck reaction. The IL PEG750 -stabilized Pd nanoparticle catalyst exhibited high efficiency, more importantly, after reaction the Pd nanoparticle catalyst could be separated from products by simple phase separation and recycled for six times without evident loss of activity. Graphical Abstract A thermoregulated ionic liquid and organic biphasic system containing [CH 3 (OCH 2 CH 2 ) 16 N + Et 3 ][CH 3 SO - 3 ] (IL PEG750 )-stabilized Pd nanoparticles was applied to Heck reaction for the first time. The Pd nanoparticle catalyst exhibited high efficiency and good recyclability.

Chitosan microspheres-supported palladium species as an efficient and recyclable catalyst for Mizoroki–Heck reaction

Linjun Shao,Chenze Qi

Chitosan microspheres-supported palladium catalysts (Pd@CM) for Mizoroki–Heck reaction have been successfully prepared by electrospraying PdCl2/chitosan mixture in a trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) aqueous solution. Swelling capacity measurement and thermal analysis demonstrated that the palladium species in the chitosan microspheres could cross-link the chitosan efficiently. FT-IR spectra demonstrated that the chitosan in the microspheres could be cross-linked by glutaraldehyde, and the formed Schiff bond could chelate the palladium species efficiently. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) indicated that the entrapment of palladium species in chitosan microspheres could enhance its dispersion. Mizoroki–Heck reaction catalysis results demonstrated that the catalytic activity of Pd@CM was associated with the size of chitosan microspheres. The Pd@CM with a suitable size was even more active than the catalyst with palladium species adsorbed on the surface of chitosan microspheres (Pd-CM). Moreover, the entrapment of palladium species in chitosan microspheres could reduce its aggregation and leaching in the catalysis procedure, which in turn increased the reusability of Pd@CM catalyst. The high catalytic activity and stability of Pd@CM have been attributed to the entrapment of palladium species within the cross-linked chitosan microspheres and the chelation of palladium species with the abundant amine and hydroxyl groups on chitosan chain.

Hematite nanoparticle-templated hollow carbon nanonets supported palladium nanoparticles: preparation and application as efficient recyclable catalysts

Maiyong Zhu,Ying Wang,Chengjiao Wang,Wei Li,Guowang Diao

Hollow carbon nanonets (HCN), which are attractive materials for catalyst support, were fabricated using the pre-synthesized hematite nanoparticles as the hard template. And then the HCN supported Pd nanoparticles (Pd/HCN) were prepared by precipitation-reduction method. The catalytic performance of Pd/HCN was investigated using Suzuki and Heck coupling reactions as model reactions. The results demonstrated that the as-prepared Pd/HCN nanocomposites exhibit high catalytic activity for the two types of coupling reactions under ligand free conditions. Especially, the Suzuki reactions between various aryl halides and phenylboronic acid gave excellent yields in water. Moreover, the as-prepared Pd/HCN catalysts can be easily recovered from the reaction medium by centrifugation for recycling, and the catalytic efficiency shows no obvious loss even after 6 repeated cycles.
