Hexafluoroisopropanol-LiI Initiated Cationic Polymerization of Alkyl Vinyl Ethers

Jiaying Tong,Dan Zhao,Jingwen Yao,Dong Chen,Junjin Duan,Yuhong Ma,Wantai Yang

First thought, we tried hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) as the hydrogen bonding donor and LiI as a mediator to promote the radical homopolymerization of vinyl ethers. Unexpectedly, an exothermic reaction and significant viscosity increase were observed as the monomer conversion of isobutyl vinyl ether (IBVE) up to 90% at 0°C in the absence of a radical initiator. Therefore, we speculated that it was a cationic rather than a radical polymerization and confirmed with the proton trapping agent 2,6-di-tert-butylpyridine. With anhydrous CH 2 Cl 2 as a solvent, the molecular weights of the PIBVE are in the range of 5900–8900. With a decrease in the reaction temperature to −20°C, the molecular weight distribution is in the range of 1.74–1.19. Moreover, 2-ethylhexyl vinyl ether (EHVE) and cyclohexyl vinyl ether (CHVE) could also undergo a similar polymerization. A plausible cationic polymerization mechanism is proposed that vinyl ethers are initiated by H + which is generated by the reaction of HFIP and LiI. The end groups of PIBVE are composed of -H at the α-end and an aldehyde group -CH 2 CHO (I) or an acetal group -CH 2 CH(OCH 2 CH(CH 3 ) 2 ) 2 (II) at the ω-end. In addition, the end groups for PEHVE and PCHVE are consistent with the above mechanism. Graphical

A Nanoporous Polymer Modified with Hexafluoroisopropanol to Detect Dimethyl Methylphosphonate

Xuming Wang,Xin Li,Qiang Wu,Yubin Yuan,Weihua Liu,Chuanyu Han,Xiaoli Wang

The increasing threat of nerve agents has prompted the need for gas sensors with fast response, high sensitivity, and good stability. In this work, the hexafluoroisopropanol functional group was modified on a porous aromatic framework material, which served as a sensitive material for detecting dimethyl methylphosphonate. A nerve agent sensor was made by coating sensitive materials on a surface acoustic wave device. Lots of pores in sensitive materials effectively increase the specific surface area and provide channels for diffusion of gas molecules. The introduction of hexafluoroisopropanols enables the sensor to specifically adsorb dimethyl methylphosphonate and improves the selectivity of the sensor. As a result, the developed gas sensor was able to detect dimethyl methylphosphonate at 0.8 ppm with response/recovery times of 29.8/43.8 s, and the detection limit of the gas sensor is about 0.11 ppm. The effects of temperature and humidity on the sensor were studied. The results show that the baseline of the sensor has a linear relationship with temperature and humidity, and the temperature and humidity have a significant effect on the response of the sensor. Furthermore, a device for real-time detection of nerve agent is reported. This work provides a new strategy for developing a gas sensor for detecting nerve agents. Keywords:surface acoustic wave;hexafluoroisopropanol;gas sensor;dimethyl methylphosphonate

Hexafluoroisopropanol-based deep eutectic solvents for high-performance DNA extraction

Jia Xu,Yuan Yang,Xiaonan Cai,Han Xiao

In this study, hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP)-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were developed and used for DNA extraction from human whole blood samples for the first time. HFIP-based DESs were prepared using HFIP and choline chloride (ChCl)/tetrabutylammonium chloride/cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as the hydrogen bond donor and acceptor, respectively. The two-phase system formation was promoted with different inorganic salts as the phase-forming component. According to the strong phase separation capability and high DNA extraction efficiency, DESs consisting of HFIP/ChCl-(NH4)2SO4, HFIP/ChCl-Na2SO4 and HFIP/ChCl-MgSO4 were then selected for application in DNA extraction. The factors that could have impacted the DNA extraction process, including molar ratio of DES, DES addition, salt species and addition, and sample pH, were systematically investigated via single-factor experimental analysis. Furthermore, we selectively examined bovine serum albumin and RNA to assess the specificity of the HFIP-based DESs for DNA extraction. Conclusively, 93.9%, 96.7% and 99.8% DNA could be extracted using the HFIP/ChCl-(NH4)2SO4, HFIP/ChCl-Na2SO4, and HFIP/ChCl-MgSO4 systems, respectively. Moreover, the developed systems were successfully used to extract DNA from human whole blood with satisfactory results. The DNA secondary structure was stable after DES extraction with the electrostatic interaction between DES and DNA as the main force driving DNA adsorption by DES.

Hexafluoroisopropanol-induced catanionic-surfactants-based coacervate extraction for analysis of lysozyme

Xu Jia,Niu Manli,Xiao Yuxiu

A coacervate extraction method, based on hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP)-induced catanionic surfactants and coupled with a back-extraction procedure, was developed for separation and purification of proteins, using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB) as representative catanionic surfactants and lysozyme as a model protein. After the coacervate extraction and back extraction, the obtained lysozyme solutions were examined in terms of quantitative analysis by capillary electrophoresis, bacteriolytic activity, and circular dichroism (CD). The effects of several parameters including back-extraction solvent, HFIP content, total surfactant concentration, and SDS/DTAB molar ratio were investigated in detail on the extraction efficiency and activity of lysozyme. Under the optimized extraction conditions (66 mM KH 2 PO 4 buffer with pH 6.2 as back-extraction solvent, SDS/DTAB molar ratio = 1:1 mol/mol, total surfactant concentration = 30 mM, HIFP concentration = 8 %  v / v ), the extraction recovery was 89.8 % (±4.7, n  = 3), limit of detection was 2.2 (±0.3, n  = 3) μg mL −1 , and meanwhile nearly 65 % of native lysozyme activity was retained. In addition, the activity and CD assays showed that SDS/DTAB molar ratio had a significant influence on the activity and structure of lysozyme after extraction. The DTAB-rich extraction systems, in which the DTAB mole fraction was equal to or larger than 70 %, could keep the activity and structure of lysozyme almost in the native state. Diluted Alkaline Pretreatment in Hexafluoroisopropanol Facilitates Chemoenzymatic Depolymerization of Polyethylene Terephthalate

Hao Xing,Ekram Akram,Rohan Ali,Yunzhengshan Gao,Yifei Zhang

Enzymatic PET degradation presents a sustainable and eco-friendly solution for recycling and upgrading PET materials. While various PET-degrading enzymes have proven effective in converting low-crystallinity PET into monomers, their efficiency decreases significantly for high-crystallinity PET. Given that most commercially available PET products are highly crystalline and have a limited specific surface area, conventional methods typically resort to heat treatment and ball milling to achieve decrystallization and micronization before enzymatic hydrolysis. However, these pretreatments often compromise environmental benefits due to their high energy consumption and dust pollution, and are difficult to scale up. In this study, we developed a chemoenzymatic strategy that efficiently depolymerizes waste PET materials into monomers in just 4 hours. This process involves an alkaline treatment with diluted NaOH in 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP), followed by enzymatic hydrolysis of the PET nanosuspensions generated from solvent exchange. The alkaline treatment partially breaks down the PET molecular chains and mitigates recrystallization during the precipitation process. Importantly, the complete hydrolysis of PET is attributed to reduced crystallinity rather than particle size. Notably, this method eliminates the need for PET micronization and minimizes the usage of NaOH. The effectiveness of this method was demonstrated through the hydrolysis of various commercially available PET products, showcasing its potential to advance enzymatic degradation processes for PET recycling.

Heterogenous Epoxidation of Isobutene Selectively Enabled by MoSe2 in Hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP)

Xiaodao Liang,Chenghao Zhang,Yaorong He,Yanxiong Fang,Hongyu Chen,Hongbing Ji,Yan Yang

Herein, a high selective epoxidation of isobutene was achieved by heterogeneously dispersed MoSe2with tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP), which further showed versatile substrate scopes and well-retained activity among recycling tests. A rational mechanism is proposed based on extensive control experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, surprisingly unveiling the metal–oxo and radical mediated pathways dramatically accelerated by hydrogen bonds of hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP).

Hexafluoroisopropanol-modified cetyltrimethylammonium bromide/sodium dodecyl sulfate vesicles as a pseudostationary phase in electrokinetic chromatography

Yu Tian,Yunfang Li,Jie Mei,Bin Deng,Yuxiu Xiao

A novel catanionic surfactant vesicle system, formulated from hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), was developed as pseudostationary phase (PSP) in electrokinetic chromatography (EKC). HFIP, as an organic modifier with the prominent properties of ionization, hydrogen bond donor and hydrophobicity, was used to effectively promote the spontaneous vesicle formation from CTAB/SDS mixed aqueous solutions, where precipitates are easy to occur due to long carbon chains, and adjust the performance of CTAB/SDS vesicles. The physical features (size and viscosity) and electrophoretic parameters (electroosmotic mobility, electrophoretic mobility and elution range) of HFIP-modified CTAB/SDS vesicles were characterized as HFIP volume content (0–4%, v/v), CTAB/SDS molar ratio (2:8–7:3   mol/mol) and total surfactant concentration (10–50   mM) varying, respectively. The 3% v/v HFIP-modified CTAB/SDS (3:7   mol/mol, 50   mM) vesicle system proves to have the largest mean diameter (288.20   nm) and the widest elution range (12.41), which is also much wider than that of the corresponding other four PSP systems including trifluoroethanol (TFE)-modified CTAB/SDS vesicles (5.69), isopropanol-modified CTAB/SDS micelles (2.03), HFIP-modified SDS micelles (4.86) and unmodified SDS micelles (3.12). The chromatographic performance of the HFIP-modified vesicle system was evaluated by separating eight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nitrotoluene positional isomers, five positively charged and five negatively charged/neutral drugs, respectively. Baseline or near-baseline separation was achieved for each series of solutes. Compared with the TFE-modified vesicle system, as well as the HFIP-modified and unmodified SDS micelle systems, the HFIP-modified vesicle system shows the best separation selectivity, the highest or comparable efficiency, and the lowest retention.

Activation of a Palladium-Based Catalyst by Hexafluoroisopropanol for Polyketone Synthesis via Homogeneous Solution Polymerization

Zhengwei Bie,Zhen Yao,Suyun Jie,Jijiang Hu,Lijun Pei,Bo-Geng Li,Pengpeng Wang,Zong Wang

Polyketone (PK) is a promising material because of its superior qualities as an engineering plastic and the direct use of CO. It is typically produced using slurry polymerization techniques, which cause reactor fouling and low bulk density product. Here, solution polymerization of CO/ethene/propene with high-molecular-weight products (240.3 kDa) and high catalytic activity (36.1 kg PK·g–1 Pd·h–1) was achieved utilizing a mixture of hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) and methanol. Both the activity and Mw are an order of magnitude higher than those reported in the literature. HFIP was able to activate the palladium-based precatalyst without using any strong acid. The 31P NMR, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and density functional theory analysis prove that HFIP decreased the coordination between palladium and the acetate ligands of the precatalyst without the disassociation of the acetate. Furthermore, the active centers in the HFIP system were more stable than that in the catalytic system with strong acid.

Alkanol–hexafluoroisopropanol high-density supramolecular solvent-based dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction of antipsychotics in human urine

Li Xiao,Chen Jia,Li Xuanwei,Xia Yaokun,Zhao Qingwei

A dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction method based on high-density alkanol–hexafluoroisopropanol supramolecular solvent (alkanol–HFIP SUPRAS) coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry is presented for microextraction and detection of four antipsychotics (aripiprazole, lurasidone, risperidone, and paliperidone) in urinary specimens. With octanol as the extractant and HFIP as the dispersant, SUPRAS-forming agent, and density regulator, reverse micelle aggregate-based SUPRAS spontaneously formed in urine, which acted as SUPRAS inducer and analytical sample. SUPRAS formation was not limited by sample pH or salt addition. The SUPRAS, located at the bottom layer of the sample solution due to its high density, was easily collected in trace volumes (~14 μL). Extraction conditions were studied and screened by the one-variable-at-a-time method, the Box–Behnken design, and response surface modeling. Optimal conditions provided low solvent consumption (70 μL of octanol and HFIP), short extraction time (40 s of vortex time), high extraction rate (61–78%), and good enrichment factor (44–55). There is a good linear relationship with correlation coefficients higher than 0.9959. Method limits of detection (S/N = 3) and quantification (S/N = 10) were in the ranges of 0.13–0.38 ng mL −1 and 0.42–1.28 ng mL −1 , respectively. Recoveries ranged from 94.0 to 120.3% with intra- and inter-day relative standard deviations less than 9.9%. The method also has satisfactory levels of eco-friendliness and sustainability (0.56 of AGREEprep score) with low matrix effects (87.4–113.0%). The method is a fast, simple, efficient, and environmentally benign procedure for microextraction and detection of antipsychotics in human urine.

Hexafluoroisopropanol/Brij-35 based supramolecular solvent for liquid-phase microextraction of parabens in different matrix samples

Jia Chen,Wenwen Deng,Xiao Li,Xuanxuan Wang,Yuxiu Xiao

A novel supramolecular solvent (SUPRAS) based on hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP)/Brij-35 was proposed for liquid-phase microextraction (LPME) of parabens in water samples, pharmaceuticals and personal care products. Brij-35 is a cost-effective and non-toxic non-ionic surfactant, but it has a high cloud point (>100 °C). HFIP, with the features of strong hydrogen-bond donor, high density and powerful hydrophobicity, was used as the cloud point-reducing agent and self-assembling and density-regulating solvent of Brij-35. Upon adding HFIP into the Brij-35 aqueous solution, the cloud point of Brij-35 was decreased to below room temperature, and the SUPRAS was formed in the bottom over a wide range of HFIP and Brij-35 concentrations at room temperature. The SUPRAS was composed of Brij-35, HFIP and water, having a density larger than water, and it showed a large spherical structure of positive micellar aggregates (2–8 μm). The HFIP/ Brij-35 SUPRAS-based LPME procedure was non-thermodependent and could be performed at room temperature with centrifugation using normal centrifuge tubes, being very simple. In the extraction of six parabens, the HFIP/ Brij-35 SUPRAS-based LPME method showed short extraction time (3.3 min), low solvent consumption (0.3 mL), and large enrichment factor (26–193). The method of HFIP/ Brij-35 SUPRAS-based LPME with HPLC-DAD gave good linearity for the quantification of parabens with correlation coefficients larger than 0.9990. The limits of detection based on a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 were from 0.042 to 0.167 μg L −1 . The recoveries for the spiked real samples were in the range of 90.2–112.4% with relative standard deviation less than 8.9%. Except for tap water, one or several paraben (s) were detected in all the other real samples.

Hexafluoroisopropanol-based supramolecular solvent for liquid phase microextraction of triazole fungicides in drinking water and beverages

Ruiyu Fu,Tingze Ren,Yanhui Zhang,Qingxin Lu,Xiaoli Guo,Xin Di

A new supramolecular solvent (SUPRAS) was synthesized using hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) as hydrogen bond donor and undecanol as hydrogen bond acceptor. Then SUPRAS was used as extraction solvent to enrich triazole fungicides in drinking water and beverages by liquid phase microextraction (LPME). Additionally, several variables that influence extraction efficiency were optimized, and the significant factors were investigated by Box-Behnken design. At optimum condition, the method shows desirable precision (RSDs less than 19.4%) and acceptable recovery (63.4%-112.1%). The low limits of detection and limits of quantitation of this method were found to be in the range of 1.0–5.0 μg/L and 5.0–20 μg/L, respectively. Compared with other analytical techniques, the method demonstrated comparable sensitivity, consumed less extractant (750 μL) and a shorter pre-treatment time (10 min). The formation mechanism of SUPRAS was investigated by density functional theory. The proposed methodology was green, sensitive, time-saving and successfully applied to determine triazole fungicides in drinking water and beverages, making it an alternative technique for the analysis of trace analytes with satisfactory sensitivity.

Hexafluoroisopropanol-induced salt-free catanionic surfactant coacervate extraction method for determination of fluoroquinolones in milk samples

Jia Xu,Xiao Li,Cao Li,Jia Chen,Yuxiu Xiao

Coacervation and phase separation were first reported in salt-free catanionic surfactant aqueous systems based on lauric acid (LA) and dodecyltrimethylammonium hydroxide (DTAOH), using hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) as a coacervate-inducing agent. The liquid–liquid two-phase separation occurs over a wide of LA/DTAOH molar ratios (78:22–0:100   mol/mol) and total surfactant concentrations (5–200   mmol   L −1 ) upon adding a small amount of HFIP (<10%, v/v). HFIP-induced salt-free LA/DTAOH catanionic surfactant system has much wider two-phase region than HFIP-induced salt-containing sodium laurate/dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide system. A HFIP-induced LA/DTAOH coacervate extraction method was established and coupled to high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detector (HPLC-UV) for determination of fluoroquinolones (rufloxacin, ciprofloxacin, danofloxacin, enrofloxacin) in milk. Detection limits are from 0.3   ng   mL −1 to 1.4   ng   mL −1 . Intra- and inter-day precisions (n   =   6) are in range of 4.5–8.3% and 5.8–10.7%, respectively. Recoveries are from 87.8% to 109.0%. The method, HFIP-induced salt-free coacervate extraction with HPLC-UV, is suitable for detecting trace fluoroquinolones in milk.
