Cerium-doped activated carbon with high dispersions of cerium and sulfur species was successfully synthesized by an in situ ion exchange method. A high space velocity was employed to differentiate the mercury removal performance of cerium-doped activated carbon with (Ce/AC) and without (Ce/C) activation in simulated flue gases , at 80 to 150 °C. The Ce/AC showed much higher mercury removal ability than those of Ce/C, commercial coconut AC and NH 4 Cl modified AC. The main mercury species formed over spent Ce/AC were HgO, HgS and HgSO 4 . The HgO was formed mainly through the oxidation of mercury by lattice oxygen, while the HgS was generated by the reaction between Ce 2 S 3 and mercury. The formation of HgSO 4 might be due to the reaction of mercury with SO 2 and/or Ce 2 S 3 with the aid of oxygen. The Ce/AC showed impressive regeneration and reuse ability, the mercury removal performance of which showed no obvious change even after 5 runs of regeneration. The mercury species formed over Ce/AC also had no obvious change after regeneration; however, the Ce 2 S 3 over Ce/AC was converted to CeO 2 after regeneration. With the above excellent properties, Ce/AC may prove to be an advantageous alternative to commercial AC for mercury removal in power plants.

Two-dimensional lamellar membranes are promising for emulsion separation, but their practical use is limited by tortuous transport pathways and irreversible organic fouling. Herein, we report pathway-engineered holey graphene oxide/cobalt phosphide (HGO/CoP) nanomesh membranes that integrate in-plane HGO nanopores, CoP nanomesh pores, and HGO/CoP interfacial transport regions into a coupled transport-reaction architecture. The porous CoP nanosheets provide additional transport regions and catalytic reaction nodes within the HGO framework while enabling membrane-mediated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The optimized HGO/CoP-8 membrane delivered a high emulsion permeance of 283.6 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 with oil rejection above 99.5%, together with underwater superoleophobicity and low oil adhesion. More importantly, PMS-assisted regeneration restored the flux recovery ratio to 98.9%, which remained above 95% over five successive emulsion filtration-regeneration cycles, demonstrating effective catalytic antifouling and membrane regeneration. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and scavenging experiments using two 1 O 2 quenchers indicated coexisting radical and non-radical oxidation pathways, with singlet oxygen as a major contributor. This work demonstrates a transport-reaction pathway engineering strategy for designing high-permeance antifouling membranes for oily emulsion treatment.

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have been regarded as promising electrochemical energy storage systems due to the high theoretical specific capacity of metallic lithium. However, the uncontrolled growth of lithium dendrites, stemming from uneven lithium deposition, poses a significant challenge to their practical implementation. To tackle this issue, an ultra-thin composite separator, consisting of octamethacryloyloxy sesquioxane (MA–POSS), methacryloyloxy trimethoxysilane grafted holey graphene oxide (MPS–HGO), and aramid nanofibers (ANF), was prepared through a combination of phase transition-induced co-assembly and in situ polymerization techniques. Experiments indicate that the composite separator, with a thickness of only 3.8 μm, exhibits exceptional mechanical properties, specifically a tensile strength of 104 ± 5.1 MPa and a modulus of 3.23 ± 0.2 GPa, due to extensive hydrogen bonding and π–π interactions between the HGO sheets and ANF. Furthermore, benefiting from the synergistic effect of the abundant pores in MPS–HGO and the inhibition of stacking through the copolymerization of MPS–HGO and MA–POSS, the composite separator also demonstrates good electrolyte infiltration and a high lithium-ion transport number (tLi+ = 0.87), which not only acts as a physical obstacle but also efficiently regulates Li-ion transport to hinder irregular dendritic growth. The simultaneous regulation of Li-ion transport and mitigation of dendrite growth resulted in a long cycle life for Li|Li cells without dendrite deposition after 1500 cycles at a high current density of 5 mA cm−2. Moreover, the LiFePO4 (LFP)|Li battery with the composite separator displayed a capacity of 154 mA h g−1, a coulombic efficiency of 99%, and a high capacity retention of 99.6% after 250 cycles at 0.5C (85.7% after 1000 cycles at 2C). This work provides a promising new approach to fabricating high-performance lithium battery separators.
