The fate and effects of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) in sewage treatment plants effluents on nutrients and submerged macrophytes are far from clear in wetlands. This study conducted a 24-day experiment to investigate changes in nutrients and epiphytic biofilm of Hydrilla verticillata in wetlands receiving effluents with 0.5, 2 and 5 mg L −1 SDBS. The decrease of SDBS in overlying water followed pseudo-first-order kinetic equation, with over 80 % of SDBS removal achieved. 2 and 5 mg L −1 SDBS decreased nutrient removal efficiency, induced oxidative stress response and damaged cells of H. verticillata . SDBS altered bacterial and eukaryotic community diversity. 0.5 mg L −1 SDBS can promote carbon fixation and methane oxidation of microorganisms. Network analysis revealed that 0.5 mg L −1 SDBS decreased the stability of epiphytic ecosystems. Mantel tests indicated significant influences of SDBS, temperature, and total nitrogen on epiphytic microbial communities.

Ciprofloxacin (CIP), a widely used fluoroquinolone antibiotic, is frequently detected in aquatic environments, raising concerns over its ecological risks. In this study, the submerged macrophyteHydrilla verticillatawas employed to investigate its capacity for CIP removal and the associated ecotoxicological effects. A series of batch experiments were conducted to evaluate plant growth, photosynthetic efficiency, oxidative stress responses, CIP biodegradation pathways, and shifts in epiphytic microbial communities. Results showed that CIP significantly inhibited the growth ofH. verticillata, with inhibition rates of plant length and fresh weight reaching 15.8% and 29.7%, respectively, at 5 mg/L. Photosynthetic parameters were severely suppressed. Fv/Fm represented the maximum quantum efficiency of PSII, significantly decreased by 94.3% at 10 mg/L, while chlorophyll a and b contents declined by up to 36.1% and 31.2%, respectively, compared to control. Antioxidant responses showedH. verticillataundergo peroxidation damage. Biodegradation analysis revealed thatH. verticillataeffectively removed CIP from water, with maximum removal rates of 37% at 1 mg/L and 31% at 5 mg/L under high biomass (4.2 g) conditions. CIP accumulation was higher in stems than in leaves, and three biodegradation intermediates (C306, C263, and C248) were identified, suggesting a degradation pathway involving piperazine ring cleavage, de-ethylation, and deamination. High-throughput sequencing further indicated that CIP exposure reduced bacterial diversity and richness onH. verticillatasurfaces, while promoting antibiotic-resistant taxa such asActinobacteriaandBacteroidota. These findings highlight the potential role ofH. verticillatain antibiotic-contaminated water remediation.

The combined effects of imidacloprid (ICD) and glufosinate-ammonium (GLAM) on submerged plants and epiphytic microbial community remains unclear, despite the frequent co-occurrence of these pesticides in aquatic environments. In this study, a 24-day experiment was conducted to examine changes in water quality, plant physiology, and epiphytic microbial communities in Hydrilla verticillate -dominated wetlands under ICD alone or together with GLAM. Results showed that GLAM+ICD induced greater oxidative stress and a stronger antioxidant response in H. verticillata compared ICD alone, demonstrating that the mixtures exacerbated ecotoxicological effects on plant. Compared to ICD, many micro-biomarkers were obtained in ICD+GLAM, including Bacteroidota, Comamonadaceae, Proteobacteria and Cocconeis . Redundancy analysis indicated that the ICD concentration was correlated positively to Stigeoclonium, Closterium and Cocconeis , but negatively related with Oedogonium and Chloromonas , GLAM is opposite to ICD. More complex interkingdom interactions among bacteria and eukaryotes were observed in high concentration MIX treatment group compared to others. Co-occurrence networks analysis further demonstrated that GLAM and ICD changed microbial interactions within epiphytic biofilm, and impaired the stability and function of the microbial communities . These results underscore that the combined presence of ICD and GLAM poses a significant ecological risk to Hydrilla verticillate- biofilm system in agricultural regions.

Co-pollution of antibiotics and heavy metal copper (Cu) is common in freshwater environments because of their wide use as antimicrobial agents, especially in aquaculture. However, the toxic effects of coexisting antibiotics and heavy metals on aquatic plants remain unclear. This study investigated the effect of four antibiotics (i.e., enrofloxacin, ENR; tetracycline, TC; sulfamethoxazole, SMX; erythromycin, ERY), Cu, and their mixture on the growth and physiological responses of Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle. Results showed that the four antibiotics exhibited toxic effects on the growth and physiological indicators of H. verticillata , and root elongation was the most sensitive endpoint of the phytotoxicity test. The median effect concentration (EC 50 ) of root elongation indicated that TC (EC 50 = 10.05 mg/L) has the highest level of growth toxicity, and the toxicity of ENR to aquatic plants was close to TC (EC 50 = 10.44 mg/L), followed by SMX (EC 50 = 20.08 mg/L). However, there was no significant toxic effect of 20 mg/L ERY on the root elongation. Hydrophobicity may be a key factor affecting the phytotoxicity of antibiotics. Moreover, antagonistic toxic effects were observed under ENR + Cu, TC + Cu, SMX + Cu, and ERY + Cu co-exposures at all the experimental concentrations (0.01–20 mg/L). Due to the concentrations of antibiotics in natural waters usually with ng/L levels, our results suggested that environmental antibiotic concentrations probably pose low ecological risk to aquatic plants and indicated the H. verticillata could be used as phytoremediation candidate to remove antibiotic or antibiotic–Cu pollutions in general nature water.
