Interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and compressive strength are critical performance indicators for carbon fiber (CF) reinforced epoxy resin composites (CF/EP) in engineering applications. In this study, methyl tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (MTHPA) and tris(dimethylaminomethyl)phenol (DMP-30) are used as the curing agent and catalyst, respectively, while amino-terminated liquid nitrile rubber (ATBN) is served as the toughening agent. In parallel, an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) derived from NCO-terminated oligomers is introduced to synergistically enhance ILSS, compressive strength, and flexural strength. DMP-30 regulates the curing mechanism of epoxy resin by controlling the reaction between hydroxyl and epoxy groups, thereby tuning the crosslinking density in the EP/MTHPA/DMP-30 matrix. ATBN improves the toughness of epoxy resin through a chemical reaction between its amino groups and the epoxy matrix. Furthermore, NCO-terminated oligomers are incorporated into the ATBN-toughened EP/MTHPA/DMP-30 matrix, forming an IPN-modified composite via selective reaction between NCO groups and hydroxyl groups in the matrix. As a result of this multi-dimensional optimization strategy, the composites achieved a maximum ILSS of 101.72 MPa, representing a 47.29% improvement, and a maximum compressive strength of 808.12 MPa, corresponding to a 71.84% increase. Highlights ATBN/EP and NCO-oligomer were synthesized for enhanced performance. ILSS improved by 47.29% and compressive strength by 71.84% via toughening. Toughness of CF/EP composites is vital for aerospace structural applications. Crosslink density directly influences compressive strength in CF/EP systems. Multidimensional toughness mechanisms enhance mechanical properties of CF/EP composites.

Herein, we report self-emulsifying anionic unsaturated polyester emulsions with different chain segments as novel sizing agents. The epoxy modified unsaturated polyester emulsions were synthesized via a self-emulsifying technique with no organic solvents. Emulsions were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), Zeta potential, centrifuge, and cryo-scanning electron microscopy (Cryo-SEM). The results showed that the emulsions obtained were mono-dispersed nanospheres that had adequate colloidal stability. The maximum Zeta potential of the sizing agent is −52.88 mV. In addition, these emulsions were investigated as the sizing agents in order to improve interfacial adhesion between carbon fibers (CFs) and unsaturated polyester resin (UPR). Compared with the CFs sized with the commercial epoxy sizing agent, the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of CF/UPR composites from the CFs sized by these emulsion sizing agents with three different chain structures were enhanced by 25%, 29%, and 42%, respectively. The emulsion sizing agent composed of a flexible segment synthesized from adipic acid, neopentyl glycol, and maleic anhydride is most effective and can achieve the highest enhancement of the ILSS of CF/UPR composites. Keywords:carbon fiber;unsaturated polyester;sizing agent;ILSS

Poor interfacial properties are always one of the bottleneck problems limiting the development of the PBO fiber/epoxy composites. To solve this, we demonstrated a mussel-inspired molecular regulation strategy of interphase structure using the layer-by-layer construction of rigid (PDA) and flexible (PEI) molecules without fiber structure damage. The precise control on the molecular scale can maximally increase the roughness and polar functional group on the fiber surface, thus enhance the chemical bonding and the mechanical interlocking of the interfacial adhesion. In comparison with the untreated fiber, the IFSS and ILSS value of fiber with (PDA/PEI)n have an increment of 86.85% and 80.08%, respectively. Besides, the overall mechanical performance, such as impact strength and dynamic thermal-mechanical behavior, was also improved significantly, owing to the improved physical-mechanical attributes of the interphase. In brief, our study presents a non-destructive interface regulation of PBO fiber composite to enhance its interfacial adhesion and mechanical performance and optimize its structure/function integrated design.

A self-synthesized octa(γ-chloropropyl) polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) and its evolutionary amino-terminated hyperbranched structure were introduced onto the carbon fibers (CFs) surface (CF-G n -POSS-NH 2 , n = 1, 2 and 3) by chemically and successively grafting method to improve the interfacial properties of CFs/epoxy composite. The fiber surface structures could be tuned through regulating grafting generation ( n ) of CF-G n -POSS-NH 2 , and the polarity and roughness of CF surface increased with the incremental dendritic generation number. Interfacial shear strength (IFSS), interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and dynamic mechanical properties of the functionalized CFs composites improved as the grafting generation increased, which may be attributed to the varying degrees of chemical interaction, mechanical interlocking and resin wettability provided by hyperbranched G n -POSS-NH 2 interface. Moreover, the interfacial structure has been also speculated and analyzed.
