Ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC) is a kind of smart material that integrates functions of actuating and sensing. In this paper, we demonstrated a new sensing function of IPMC to detect the concentration of ethanol by investigating the effects of ethanol content on the electrical response of IPMC. Benefiting from the ion migration effect in the Nafion matrix , the voltage of IPMC varies with different ethanol concentrations . It was found that the response process of IPMC to ethanol solution can be divided into a rapid response stage caused by concentration difference and a slow response stage caused by uneven mechanical stress. The voltage change caused by the concentration difference was defined as the response voltage, and the sensitivity of the IPMC sensor to ethanol concentration was 4.39 mV. We have demonstrated the good cyclability and stability of IPMC to ethanol by experiments. Furthermore, the IPMC sensor was applied to respiratory monitoring after drinking. It has been proven that the IPMC sensor can monitor the changes in alcohol concentration after drinking, which is of great significance for the prevention of stroke after drinking.

Ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) actuators have attracted considerable scientific interest in the field of robotics and artificial muscles due to their low operating voltage, high strain capacity, and lightweight. However, the non-uniform bending of IPMC actuators affects their control accuracy and limits their potential applications. In this work, the surface voltage of IPMC actuators was measured and the internal electric field distribution was numerically computed. It was concluded that the non-uniform bending is mainly due to the non-uniform distribution of hydrated cations inside the IPMC as a result of the inhomogeneous electric field. The bending uniformity is improved by sputtering a gold layer on the surface of the IPMC actuator, and a support strip is introduced to limit the bending of the IPMC in the width direction, resulting in an improvement of its pointing characteristics. It is found that the bending uniformity of IPMC improved by 35.27% and 119.48% by sputtering at an input voltage of 2.5 V and 5 V respectively. When the input voltage is fixed at 2.5 V and 5 V, the bending in the width direction is reduced by 75.68% and 93.12% with the support structure, respectively.

The structure and additives of ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) are important factors affecting its performance. Macropores and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MCNTs) were introduced into multilayered IPMC actuators by an orderly mesh of silica spheres to enhance the IPMC actuator’s performance. The mechanical of membranes is improved a lot by the uniform combination of MCNTs and macroporous multilayered MCNTs/Nafion membrane. In particular, Young’s modulus for the macroporous multilayered MCNTs/Nafion membrane increases by 3.3 folds (from 262.6 MPa to 858.1 MPa), and the hardness increases by 4.4 folds (from 28.2 MPa to 123.9 MPa). Electromechanical results of the IPMC actuator increase respectively by 1.41 (33.5 mm) and 2.2 (19.2 mN) folds in the air under a DC voltage of 5 V, compared with typical IPMC actuators.

Ionic polymer–metal composites (IPMC), one of the most popular materials in the field of artificial muscle research, have attracted much attention because of their high flexibility, low drive voltage (<10 V), high force density, large deformation, and so forth. However, the results show that the serious electrode fatigue crack and water loss of traditional IPMC greatly decrease its fatigue life and limit the practical application. In this study, we developed a novel liquid metal composite electrode. A layer of eutectic gallium–indium alloy (EGaIn) liquid metal was applied to the surface of the platinum electrode of the IPMC using a mask. Because of the good self-healing performance of the liquid metal, it is expected to solve the above problems of resistance increase and water loss caused by cracks. It turns out that the prepared EGaIn/Pt-IPMC exhibits a driving force up to 120 mN and maximum fatigue life of about 25,000 s at a driving voltage of 3 V. Compared with the best work reported, the fatigue strength of EGaIn/Pt-IPMC was increased by about 210%, and the maximum driving force of EGaIn/Pt-IPMC prepared by a single-layer basement membrane was between the IPMC prepared by 4–6 layer basement membrane. The electromechanical properties were significantly improved, and it is expected to realize a series of bionic applications.

The cost-effective and high-performance ionic polymer–metal composites (IPMC) were designed and prepared from ion-exchange membranes based on sulfonated poly(ether ether sulfone) (SPEES) with different degrees of sulfonation (DS). The precursor of SPEES, namely PEES, is commercially available and industrial grade. Moreover, the PEES can be transformed easily into ion-conductive SPEES through a simple sulfonation reaction. The ion exchange capacity (IEC) and water uptake (WU) of SPEES membranes increase with increasing their DS, and the proton conductivities of these hydrated SPEES membranes are subsequently enhanced. Compared with the commercial Nafion ion-exchange membrane, the SPEES membranes have higher IEC and WU. The IPMC actuators made of the SPEES membranes show the large bending strain and fast response under electric stimulation. The SPEES membrane with the highest DS (SPEES4) shows the best performance of IPMC actuators. The electromechanical behaviors of these IPMC actuators indicate that the SPEES is a candidate to substitute Nafion.

Ionic polymer-metal composites (IPMCs) composed of Nafion film and platinum deposited on both faces have gained much attention in biomedical engineering as actuators because it can show large bending motion under an electric field. This study focuses on the design of a multilayered IPMC actuator based on sulfonated graphene oxide (SGO) modified macroporous Nafion film. The Nafion film is firstly fabricated via templating technique by using silica spheres as template and SGO as a conductive agent dispersed in Nafion film. Then, Pt nanoparticles are deposited on both faces of the as-prepared Nafion film to fabricate the actuator (denoted as IPMC-SGO-M). In the IPMC-SGO-M, macropores and SGO co-exist in the Nafion film, which can effectively enhance the rapid transport of ions and electrons. In addition, small Pt nanoparticles are uniformly dispersed on the surface of the Nafion film, which can improve the water-uptake capability and charge redistribution between two layers of electrode regions. As a result, the tip displacements of the IPMC-SGO-M are 1.7-fold and 1.9-fold higher than that of the IPMC based on macroporous Nafion film (IPMC-M) under 6.2 and 6.6 V, respectively. The blocking forces of the IPMC-SGO-M are about 2.6-fold and 2.3-fold higher than that of IPMC-M under 6.2 and 6.6 V, respectively.

Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite (IPMC), as a typical electroactive polymer, has broad application prospects in flexible actuators, bionic robots, and micro-electromechanical systems. However, traditional Nafion-based IPMCs are costly and have limited mechanical properties. In this study, chitosan (CS) was used as the matrix, and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was introduced to construct rGO-CS composite ion-exchange membranes. The IPMC actuator is fabricated by pressing a silver foil onto a chitosan-based membrane through heat treatment. The results showed that the introduction of rGO significantly enhanced the mechanical strength and continuity of the conductive channels of the composite membrane, as well as improved the water retention ability and ion migration efficiency, thereby enhancing the bending deformation ability and output force of IPMC. This research provides a new idea for the design of low-cost and biobased IPMC materials.

Ionic polymer–metal composite (IPMC) integrates
ionic conductivity
and flexibility, exhibiting great application potential in wearable
devices, bionic robots, microfluidic chips and other fields. Although
the thickness of the electrode layer of IPMC fabricated by traditional
physical methods is controllable, it fails to achieve high compactness,
strong adhesion and low sheet resistance, resulting in performance
far inferior to that of IPMCs prepared by chemical methods. To address
the above issues, this work proposes a new strategy with controllable
electrode layer thickness based on spraying silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)
and electroplating (EP), which effectively enables the rapid construction
and performance enhancement of the electrode layer. Compared with
IPMCs prepared by other processes, the IPMC with sprayed AgNPs@Au
electrodes shows advantages of low sheet resistance (∼0.115
Ω/□) and high sensitivity (∼8.475 mV/cm –1 ). Meanwhile, it maintains high stability after 1000 cyclic bends
or immersion in HCl for corrosion, further demonstrating the potential
application of IPMCs prepared by this process in flexible wearable
sensors.

Photonic crystal (PhC) displays have garnered significant attention owing to their high color saturation, brightness, wide color gamut, and low energy consumption. However, existing PhC color modulation techniques still suffer from drawbacks such as slow response speed, short cycle life, poor control accuracy, and challenging pixel integration, which severely restrict their application in dynamic displays. Herein, we integrate a two-dimensional PhC film with an electroactive ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) actuator featuring titanium carbide/carbon nanotubes (MXene/CNTs) composite electrodes and achieve a dynamic PhC display with full-color-gamut switching. Color change of the prepared PhC display is electrically controlled, localized, and active, enabling precise pixel control. MXene/CNT-IPMC offers electrically addressable, high-speed pixelation which enables rapid color switching for dynamic displays. This synergistic integration of PhC films with actuation devices not only demonstrates their potential for display applications but also lays the foundation for dynamic reflective displays with low energy consumption, high brightness, and wide color gamut.
