Highly selective and active Cu-In2O3/C nanocomposite for electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO

Yanzhu Ye,Ying Liu,Zhongshui Li,Xiaohuan Zou,Hui Wu,Shen Lin

The Cu-In 2 O 3 /C nanocomposite was prepared by a simple solid-phase reduction method. The introduction of In 2 O 3 into Cu/C to form the Cu-In 2 O 3 /C nanocomposite evidently enhances the electrocatalytic activity for the selective reduction of CO 2 to CO. Specifically, the Cu-In 2 O 3 /C nanocomposite exhibits higher Faraday efficiency ( FE  = 86.7%) at −0.48 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in the electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to CO and larger current densities (55 mA cm −2 ) under a low overpotential (−1.08 V vs. RHE). These indicate its superior performance over many of the reported Cu-based catalysts [1] , [2] , [3] , [4] . It was also found that by rationally adjusting the applied potential, tunable syngas can be formed, which can be used to synthesize formic acid, methyl ether, methanol, synthetic fuels, or other bulk chemicals through appropriate industrial processes. Furthermore, the Cu-In 2 O 3 /C nanocomposite maintains good stability in the electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 . This work demonstrates a novel strategy to convert CO 2 into desired products with high energy efficiency and large current density under low overpotential by the rational designing of non-precious metal catalysts.

Enhanced electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to formic acid using nanocomposites of In2O3@C with graphene

Li Wenxiang,Gao Shuo,Yang Chuanruo,Yang Juntao,Nisar Amjad,Xiang Guolei,Jin Junsu

In 2 O 3 is an effective electrocatalyst to convert CO 2 to formic acid (HCOOH), but its inherent poor electrical conductivity limits the efficient charge transfer during the reaction. Additionally, the tendency of In 2 O 3 particles to agglomerate during synthesis further limits the exposure of active sites. Here we address these issues by leveraging the template effect of graphene oxide and employing InBDC as a self-sacrificing template for the pyrolysis synthesis of In 2 O 3 @C. The resulting In 2 O 3 @C/rGO-600 material features In 2 O 3 @C nanocubes uniformly anchored on a support of reduced graphene oxide (rGO), significantly enhancing the active sites exposure. The conductive rGO network facilitates charge transfer during electrocatalysis, and the presence of oxygen vacancies generated during pyrolysis, combined with the strong electron-donating ability of rGO, enhances the adsorption and activation of CO 2 . In performance evaluation, In 2 O 3 @C/rGO-600 exhibits a remarkable HCOOH Faradaic efficiency exceeding 94.0% over a broad potential window of −0.7 to −1.0 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)), with the highest value of 97.9% at −0.9 V (vs. RHE) in a H-cell. Moreover, the material demonstrates an excellent cathodic energy efficiency of 71.6% at −0.7 V (vs. RHE). The study underscores the efficacy of uniformly anchoring metal oxide nanoparticles onto rGO for enhancing the electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction performance of materials.

In Situ Encapsulation of Nano-Si Anodes with In2O3/C Derived From Indium-MOF for Sulfide-Based All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries with High Performance

Wanping Liu,Xuelei Li,Jun Liu,Zhihui Xu,Huirong Liu,Qingwen Li,Haoxuan Liu,Hexige Wuliji,Aruuhan Bayaguud

Silicon (Si) shows excellent potential as an anode material for sulfide-based all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs). However, Si anodes face inherent challenges such as low electron conductivity and large volume changes during cycling, ultimately resulting in a short cycle life. Herein, to address these challenges, In 2 O 3 /C derived from an indium-based metal-organic framework (In-MOF) is utilized to encapsulate Si particles in situ. The Li-In alloy and Li 2 O formed in situ after the lithiation of In 2 O 3 /C provide rapid Li + transportation properties, and the existence of In 2 O 3 /C efficiently relieves the significant volume changes of Si. Consequently, the Si anode exhibits improved cyclic stability. The composite Si@In 2 O 3 /C anode prepared with a high loading of 7.64 mg cm −2 maintains a high specific capacity of 1093.2 mAh g −1 (8.36 mAh cm −2 ) after 500 cycles at 2.74 mA cm −2 , maintaining 84.3% of the initial capacity. Furthermore, a full cell prepared with a Si@In 2 O 3 /C composite anode and a LiNbO 3 -coated LiNi 0.7 Co 0.2 Mn 0.1 O 2 (LNO@NCM) cathode shows excellent cyclic stability, with 74.3% of the capacity retained after cycling 1000 times at 0.2C (0.51 mA cm −2 ) and an average Coulomb efficiency of 99.94%. This study offers a compelling idea for the design of sulfide-based ASSLB anode materials.

Nanorod In2O3@C Modified Separator with Improved Adsorption and Catalytic Conversion of Soluble Polysulfides for High-Performance Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Tiancheng Wang,Zehao Shi,Furan Wang,Shengrui Cui,Zengqi Zhang,Wei Liu,Yongcheng Jin

The shuttle effect of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) poses a crucial challenge for commercializing lithium–sulfur batteries. The functionalization of the separator is an effective strategy for enhancing the cell lifespan through the capture and reuse of LiPSs. Herein, a novel In2O3 nanorod with an ultrathin carbon layer (In2O3@C) was coated on a polypropylene separator. The results demonstrate the adsorption and catalysis of In2O3 on polysulfides, effectively inhibiting the shuttle effect and improving the redox kinetics of LiPSs. Besides, the ultrathin carbon layer increases the reaction sites and accelerates the electrochemical reaction rate. The cell with the In2O3@C interlayer displays excellent reversibility and stability with a 0.029% capacity decay each cycle in 2000 cycles at 2C. In addition, the In2O3@C interlayer significantly improves the cell performance under high current (888.2 mA h g–1 at 2C and room temperature) and low temperature (1007.8 mA h g–1 at 0.1C and −20 °C) conditions.
