A facile method for fabrication of In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 @palygorskite composites from a Co/In-based metal-organic framework (MOF) was reported. First, Co/In-MOFs hybridized with palygorskite (PAL) was prepared via a one-pot solvothermal method. Second, In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 @PAL composites were obtained by pyrolysis of In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 @PAL in air. It was found that the In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 @PAL composite exhibited higher photocatalytic activities than In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 to the degradation of MB and TC under visible-light irradiation. About 99% of MB (within 40 min) and 80% of TC (within 120 min) were degraded using In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 @5.0%PAL as catalyst. It was supposed that the efficient adsorption of MB and TC, and electrostatic interactions between electron–hole and PAL were responsible for such improvement. The photocatalytic degradation mechanisms of MB and TC on the In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 @PAL were investigated. This work shows that hybridization MOFs with PAL could enhance the photocatalytic properties of MOFs-derived metal oxides for water treatment.
Acetone, a critical biomarker in exhaled breath for the diagnosis of diabetes, necessitates the development of high-performance gas sensors for real-time monitoring. In this work, bimetallic In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 porous nanorods with tunable In/Co molar ratios were synthesized via a hydrothermal approach. The optimized sensor 3-ICO (In:Co = 3:10, molar ratio), exhibited remarkable acetone-sensing performance with a high response of 125.6 to 10 ppm acetone at 250 °C, ultrafast response/recovery times (45 s/19 s), outstanding selectivity, and long-term stability. The integration of materials characterization with density functional theory (DFT) simulations demonstrated that the p-n heterojunction formed between Co 3 O 4 and In 2 O 3 facilitates interfacial charge transfer, enhancing both the oxygen vacancy concentration and specific surface area. These synergistic effects significantly improve acetone adsorption energy and electron transport efficiency. This work highlights the pivotal role of heterojunction engineering in optimizing the detection performance of metal-oxide semiconductors for low-concentration volatile organic compounds (VOCs), offering promising applications in non-invasive diabetes diagnosis.
In this study, we synthesized a convenient and efficient composite photocatalyst, In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 from the pyrolysis of Co-doped MIL-68(In). Structural characterization indicates that the composite material exhibited a rod-like hollow structure, thus increasing the specific surface area. Meanwhile, In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 forms a PN heterojunction, which reduces the recombination rate of photogenerated hole-electron pairs. Moreover, the visible light absorption ability of this material is enhanced and it has good catalytic properties. Under visible light, the removal rate of tetracycline (TC) reaches 94% by the In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 in 90 min, and the reaction constant is 0.02393 min −1 , which is 6.86 and 5.56 times of the single component In 2 O 3 and Co 3 O 4 , respectively. As shown by free radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) test, h + and •O 2 − play an important role in degrading TC into small molecule intermediates in the catalytic process.
