Indium nitride (InN) exhibited significant potential as a photoelectrode material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, attributed to its superior light absorption, high electron mobility, and direct bandgap. However, its practical application was constrained by rapid carrier recombination occurring within the bulk and at the surface. To address these limitations, researchers developed InN/UiO-66 heterojunction photoelectrodes, which markedly enhanced PEC water splitting for hydrogen production. Functionalization of the UiO-66 metal–organic framework (MOF) with hydroxyl (–OH) groups optimized the bandgap and improved light absorption, facilitating efficient charge separation and transfer processes. The functionalization also mitigated surface defect states in the InN nanorods (NRs), which were a major source of photogenerated carrier recombination, thereby enhancing overall photocatalytic activity. Compared to pristine InN NRs, the optimized InN/UiO-66-(OH) 2 electrode achieved a photocurrent density of −0.42 mA cm −2 and an applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE) of 0.47 % at −0.5 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Furthermore, the InN/Ag/UiO-66-(OH) 2 system demonstrated a hydrogen production rate of 1.82 μmol min −1 under AM 1.5G illumination, with excellent long-term stability. This study provided critical insights into the design of efficient and durable PEC photoelectrodes, achieved the highest hydrogen yield reported for indium-based photocathodes to date, and underscored the promise of InN-based materials for solar-driven hydrogen production in the context of clean energy applications.

Electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 into value-added chemicals and fuels is of intensive urgence and importance to relieve the growing CO 2 emission and achieve the carbon neutrality. Herein, an In 2 O 3 /InN heterojunction was constructed and firstly utilized in electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to formate with high Faradaic efficiency (95.7% at −1.48 V vs. RHE) and outstanding stability. The in-depth experimental analyses together with theoretical studies reveal that the O-N interaction at the interface between In 2 O 3 and InN could provide a charge transfer channel and lead to electron enrichment on the surface of InN, promoting the activation of CO 2 molecules, lowering the Gibbs free energy for the formation of *HCOO intermediate and strengthening the binding with *HCOO during CO 2 RR. This work provides a fundamental understanding of the interaction at In-based heterostructure interface for highly selective CO 2 reduction to formate and offers a universal route for the design of other type metal oxide/nitride heterostructures for various catalytic applications.

In this study, an InN photocathode consisting of ZnO nanowire arrays was proposed as a cathode for a photon-enhanced thermionic emission (PETE) solar energy converter. To optimize the performance of the device, we applied InN with a phonon bottleneck effect to the PETE converter. The theoretical model for PETE conversion with this complex photocathode was developed based on one-dimensional continuous equations and boundary conditions. We simulated and analyzed the conversion efficiency as a function of operating temperature, solar concentration, surface electron affinity , and operating voltage. Furthermore, we verified the feasibility of the proposed cathode through experiments on the current-voltage characteristics of the InN photocathode at different temperatures. The results of simulations and experiments indicated that InN is a promising photocathode material and may enable high-performance PETE devices.

A hierarchical InN/Ni/InP photoanode is constructed. • Type-II heterojunction and metal contacts promote efficient charge separation. • The photoanode delivers high photocurrent and near-unity Faradaic efficiency. • Interfacial charge transfer is accelerated by synergistic junction engineering. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is frequently hindered by inefficient charge separation and sluggish interfacial charge-transfer kinetics. Here we report a hierarchical InN/PNM/IPQ photoanode composed of vertically aligned indium nitride nanorods (InN NRs), petal-like nickel microspheres (P-Ni MSs), and indium phosphide quantum dots (InP QDs). In this architecture, the InP QDs establish a type-II InN/InP heterojunction that promotes spatial charge separation, whereas the P-Ni MSs provide efficient electrical contact and facilitate interfacial charge extraction. Consequently, the InN/PNM/IPQ photoanode delivers a photocurrent density of 6.89 mA cm −2 at 1.45 V RHE and an ABPE of 1.21% at 0.86 V RHE , surpassing those of the pristine InN and the corresponding binary photoelectrodes. Under AM 1.5G illumination, it also exhibits a hydrogen evolution rate of 289.8 μmol h −1 , a Faradaic efficiency of 97.6% and stable PEC output over 8500 s. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and transient photocurrent measurements reveal suppressed charge recombination and accelerated interfacial charge transfer, in agreement with the synergistic effects of type-II band alignment and metal–semiconductor junction engineering. This work demonstrates an effective hierarchical heterostructure design for enhancing the performance of InN-based photoelectrodes toward solar-driven PEC water splitting. A hierarchical photoanode composed of indium nitride nanorods, petal-like nickel microspheres, and indium phosphide quantum dots is constructed to enhance photoelectrochemical water splitting. The synergistic effects of a type-II heterojunction and optimized metal–semiconductor interfaces promote efficient charge separation and interfacial charge transfer, resulting in improved photocurrent density, stability, and Faradaic efficiency.
