The retention of dislocation cellular patterns (DCPs) in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) processed metals offers a novel pathway for achieving strength-ductility balance in high-temperature applications. This study innovatively combines oxide dispersion strengthening (ODS) with tailored heat treatment to stabilize DCPs in Inconel 718 (IN718) superalloys. Through strategic introduction of yttrium oxide (Y 2 O 3 ) nanoparticles (average diameter ≈40 nm) and optimized solution treatments (1200 °C for 5min/1 h), we resolve the inherent conflict between residual stress elimination and microstructure preservation in LPBF-fabricated components. The 5-min treated ODS alloy achieves exceptional synergy at 650 °C: yield strength maintains 600 MPa while ductility increases 45 % (from 20 % to 29 %) compared to as-built specimens. Crucially, our approach demonstrates two key innovations: 1) Y 2 O 3 nanoparticles effectively pin dislocations movements, preserving DCPs structure against thermal coarsening; 2) Ultra-short heat treatment duration enables complete Laves phase dissolution without compromising dislocation network integrity. Microstructural analysis confirms that the stabilized DCPs-Y 2 O 3 composite architecture facilitates simultaneous stress and strain accommodation. This work establishes a new paradigm for designing high-performance LPBF alloys through coupled process-microstructure optimization, particularly for aerospace components requiring elevated temperature mechanical stability.

Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) nickel (Ni)-based superalloys are advanced materials known for their outstanding tensile and creep performance at temperatures exceeding 1000 °C. Nevertheless, their conventional synthesis presents a longstanding challenge in cost-effectively producing intricate components for critical applications. In this work, electrostatic self-assembly (ESA) of powders with the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process have been successfully combined to produce yttria ODS Inconel 718 (IN718) alloy for the first time. The approach has demonstrated a significant contribution of yttria to the strength of IN718 after the solid solution heat treatment, as evidenced by ≈50% improvement in room temperature yield strength with a 0.5 wt.% yttria addition. The addition of yttria by this process leads to a heterogeneous microstructure. This heterogeneous microstructure comprises two distinct grain areas with varying amounts of yttria nanoparticles and dislocation storage. It has been shown that the yield strength increase can be predicted by the combination of both Y 2 O 3 dispersion strengthening and dislocation strengthening mechanisms. These findings offer an effective approach to tailor heterogeneous microstructures, unlocking new opportunities for cost-effectively producing high-performance ODS Ni-based superalloy products with excellent mechanical properties.

Vat photopolymerization is a potential method to prepare metal parts. This research reports the first manufacturing of nickel-based superalloy Inconel 718 components by vat photopolymerization. The photocurable pastes with a high-volume loading of metal powder of 55 % were prepared, and it has the advantages of excellent stability and fluidity at a constant shear rate, which is suitable for fabricating green body. Inconel 718 complex green parts with high precision were successfully printed by vat photopolymerization. Subsequently, the green body was debinded to remove resin and sintered at different temperatures to obtain metal parts and retain their specific characteristics. The microstructure evolution of the printed parts during sintering was studied comprehensively, and the sintering mechanism was discussed in detail. The microstructure and phase compositions were characterized by SEM , EDX , and XRD , respectively. The results indicate that oxides were formed in the sintered parts , hindering further densification of Inconel 718 metal components. Nickel-based superalloy with complex structures was obtained using vat photopolymerization technology.

The non-uniformity of microstructure seriously affects the mechanical properties of alloys. In this study, the thermal history at different positions and the heterogeneities of microstructure and properties of directed energy deposition-arc Inconel 718 alloy (DED-Arc IN718) are studied. The results show that the microstructures are composed of Al 2 O 3 + γ(Ni) + (TiN) [nucleus]/(NbC + TiC) [shell] + NbC + Laves. However, the size and morphology of Laves phases along the build direction are obviously different due to the difference of the cooling rate. The thermal cycling process causes precipitation and dissolution of the γ'' phase, resulting in softening and hardening zones in DED-Arc IN718 sample. The presence of softening zone and hardening zone result in extremely heterogeneous mechanical properties along the build direction, with the maximum difference in ultimate tensile strength reaching 54 MPa. The long-striped Laves phases first fail internally during tensile loading to form a crack source, and then the crack propagates along expand along the γ(Ni) matrix. The granular or blocky Laves phase at the top and bottom is beneficial to improve the elongation, and the maximum difference of elongation is 20.1%. This study lays the foundation for further improving the mechanical properties of Inconel 718 alloy.
