Water splitting by electrolysis is a promising technology that can address rising energy demands and environmental pollution. However, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), as one half-cell reaction of water splitting, always suffers from slow kinetics and a large overpotential due to the four proton-coupled electron transfer process, and dominates the overall process efficiency. IrO2 is a promising and widely used catalyst for the OER in commercial applications. Herein, we obtained low-crystalline nano-IrO2 particles confined in an amorphous Ir-based MOF (IrO2@Ir-MOF) through a simple solvothermal reaction, in which ultrafine IrO2 particles are uniformly distributed in the Ir-MOF skeleton. The fabricated IrO2@Ir-MOF-ppy electrode exhibits excellent OER activity with an overpotential of 207 mV, to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH solution, outperforming most previously reported OER catalysts. The IrO2@Ir-MOF‖IrO2@Ir-MOF couple exhibits promising activity and stability for the overall water splitting reaction in 1 M KOH (1.53 V).

The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) refers to the major contributor to the energy losses in electrowinning of metals. Improving the stability in the long term and activity of the electrocatalyst for OER take on a critical significance in reducing the energy consumption. An efficient and stable OER electrode (named as Ti/SMST/IrO 2 electrode) was prepared in this study by supporting IrO 2 nanoparticles on the surface of the submicrometer-sized TiO 2 (SMST) interlayer. The obtained results indicated that the IrO 2 nanoparticles approximately 14 nm in size were supported onto the submicrometer-sized TiO 2 particles’ surface and exhibited a cactus-like morphology. The Ti/SMST/IrO 2 electrode with the SMST interlayer prepared at 450 °C exhibited the highest electrocatalytic activity in terms of OER for its largest active surface area. This electrode showed an overpotential of 350 mV at a current density of 50 mA cm −2 and displayed a remarkable electrochemical stability of 443 h at a high current density of 2 A cm −2 in H 2 SO 4 solution without significant change in OER activity. The prepared Ti/SMST/IrO 2 electrode with high electrocatalytic performance is considered one of the promising electrodes for OER.

The application of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is largely limited by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics, which usually requires noble metal Ir/Ru-based catalysts. It’s desirable to design low-cost catalysts with less content of Ir/Ru in OER without sacrificing their catalytic performance. Herein, the ultrasmall IrO 2 nanoparticles uniformly dispersed on Co 3 O 4 -CoMoO 4 nanocages (IrO 2 @Co 3 O 4 -CoMoO 4 ) electrocatalyst is demonstrated. Structural characterization indicates that hollow Co 3 O 4 -CoMoO 4 acts as the effective support to provide abundant anchoring sites and heterogenous interfaces, which enable the catalyst to expose more active sites and accelerate charge transport. As a result, the representative IrO 2 @Co 3 O 4 -CoMoO 4 exhibits an outstanding OER activity ( η = 236 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) with a superior mass activity of 713 A g –1 Ir at 1.53 V vs. RHE in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 that are comparable to most reported catalysts. Theoretical calculations also reveal that the introduction of Mo can effectively modify electronic structure and decrease adsorption energy barriers of oxygen intermediates, and thereby enhancing OER catalytic activity. This work provides a new idea to develop highly efficient low Ir catalysts for OER.

A hybrid oxygen evolution catalyst, IrO 2 @single-layer NiFe layered double hydroxides (SL-NiFe LDHs), is successfully synthesized by anchoring highly dispersed IrO 2 nanoparticles to SL-NiFe LDHs nanosheets with oxygen vacancies. Typically, during the synthesis process, the functional group –NH 2 from the external anchor formamide acts as a coordination site to control the nucleation and growth of nanoparticles , which can ensure high dispersion without aggregation of IrO 2 on SL-NiFe LDHs. In addition, this reducing synthetic environment causes a large number of holes and grooves in the NiFe-LDHs nanosheets, which result in the formation of oxygen vacancies in the SL-NiFe LDHs. The loading of IrO 2 nanoparticles and the formation of oxygen vacancies endow IrO 2 @SL-NiFe LDHs with excellent performance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). IrO 2 @SL-NiFe LDHs nanosheets display outstanding OER performance with an overpotential of 270 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and good stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the hybridization of IrO 2 and SL-NiFe LDHs accelerates the reaction step. Notably, the Ir sites at the edges are more conducive to the formation of oxygen, and the oxygen sites on SL-NiFe LDHs are more conducive to the cleavage of the O–H bond, thereby improving the OER activity. This work highlights a potential synthetic strategy that can combine nanoprecious metals with transition metals to prepare highly active electrocatalysts for efficient water oxidation reactions.

Progesterone (P4) belongs to a factor that affects stress response and is a potential carcinogen, and saliva levels are expected to be a standard measurement for clinical diagnosis. In this study, a new type of nanoflower with both recognition functionality and catalytic substrate ability was prepared by copper phosphate, Pt/IrO2 nanocomposites (Pt/IrO2 NPs), streptavidin (SA) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) via a one-pot co-precipitation strategy. Due to the enhanced catalytic activity and stability of Pt/IrO2@SA@HRP nanoflowers, we developed a powerful and sensitive multiple-catalysis ELISA to monitor progesterone in saliva. Multiple-catalysis ELISA based on a specific antibody and Pt/IrO2@SA@HRP nanoflowers exhibited a linear interval range from 0.217 ng mL−1 to 7.934 ng mL−1. The median inhibitory concentration (IC50) for progesterone is 1.311 ng mL−1 and the limit of detection (LOD = IC10) is 0.076 ng mL−1 in the proposed method. Satisfactory recoveries were in a range of 79.6–107% with an acceptable coefficient of variation (below 10.6%). Results of the multiple-catalysis ELISA and LC-MS/MS had a good coincidence. Our result unraveled that multiple-catalysis ELISA is a potentially serviceable tool for the detection of progesterone in saliva.

The need to use expensive and scarce Ir-based catalysts in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) hinders the large-scale application of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). Herein, we present an effective interface-engineering strategy to boost the efficacy of low-Ir catalysis of OER by means of electron transfer and lattice oxygen stabilization at the catalyst–support interface by utilizing a highly conductive (∼960 S cm–1) Ti4O7 support to strongly anchor IrO2 nanoparticles. Experimental and theoretical calculations suggest that Ti4O7 tailors the Ir electronic structure that results from the formation of Ir–O–Ti bonds at the IrO2–Ti4O7 interface, resulting in a lowered d-band center that weakens the adsorption of oxygen intermediates on Ir sites and thus boosts OER catalysis. The Ir–O–Ti bonds formed at the interface stabilize lattice oxygen in IrO2, facilitating a stable lattice oxygen mechanism path for OER catalysis. The interface effect results in superior OER activity with an overpotential of 244 mV at 10 mA cm–2 and a high mass activity of 1342.9 A gIr–1 (93.25× that of commercial IrO2), and the material also shows better durability than commercial IrO2. This interface-engineering strategy affords a strong catalyst–support interaction and should facilitate the design of high-performance catalysts for PEMWE applications.
