Janus emulsions formed with a polymerizable monomer, silicone oil, and Tween 80 aqueous solution

Lingling Ge,Shuhui Lu,Rong Guo

Janus emulsions of a polymerizable monomer tripropyleneglycol diacrylate (TP) combined with silicone oil (SO) as inner oil phases and Tween 80 aqueous solution as continuous phase are prepared in a one-step high energy mixing process. The dependence of droplet topology on the concentration of surfactant, TP/SO ratio, and the stirring speed during emulsification is investigated. The result shows that the volume ratio of two oils within an individual droplet changes correspondingly to the total composition of emulsion. Increasing the speed of stirring results in a significant reduction in the droplet size, i.e. a five times increase in the stirring speed produces a droplet size reduction from hundreds to a few microns. What is more important, the topology of Janus drops remains similar for the different preparations. These fundamental investigations illustrate the potential for future Janus particle synthesis in batch scale with a controllable particle topology.

Construction of Nano-Janus emulsion by phase inversion composition

Gaojian Chen,Lingling Ge,Junhao Zhu,Wanhui Xu,Rong Guo

Nano-Janus emulsion possesses excellent solubilization capabilities of both aqueous and organic materials, various liquid–liquid interfaces, and precisely controllable morphology. Successful construction of nano Janus droplets at mild conditions of room temperature and low-energy input will expand the industrial application. Two immiscible liquids of silicone oil (SO) and oleic acid (OA) are used as internal phases, and water is added dropwise at mild temperature. The topology of the nano-sized complex droplets is characterized by cryo-TEM, SAXS, and FF-TEM. Micro structure of lamellar liquid crystal (Lα), which is the critical transition phase, is investigated to reveal the formation mechanism. Topology adjustment including size range, volume ratio, and interface curvature is investigated. Complex nano droplets with snowman shape are successfully constructed in batch-scale at mild temperature of 30 °C and water-dripping rate of 1.0 mL/h. Formation of a four-component Lα phase is the critical point to the successful construction of the nano-Janus emulsion, which also creates additional freedom for structural regulation. The size of the complex droplets is freely alternated in the range of 50–500 nm and the morphology of one lobe is controlled from “crescent” to “half-moon”, and “moon with a hole”.

A Janus emulsions stabilized only by natural cellulose particles under the dual driving force of temperature and density

Xingtao Ma,Ying Liang,Fei Wu,Zimei Zhu,Chunmiao Xia,Huan Liu,Cuige Zhang,Maodong Xu

Janus emulsions have particularly drawn researchers' attention due to their asymmetrical morphology and anisotropic characteristics. However, except for Janus emulsions with liquid-liquid structures, other types of Janus emulsions have not been studied yet. Inspired by the occasional discovery that the water film on the foam surface freezes and transforms into a hard solid interface film below freezing point, a Janus emulsion was developed by using the phase change characteristics of solid paraffin wax. In this study, decane or perfluorooctane was used as the oil phase (O), solid paraffin wax as the solid interfacial film (S), and solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) or natural cellulose particles as the water phase (W). By controlling temperature and microgravity, hemispherical (O + S)/W and (S + O)/W type Janus phase change emulsions were successfully prepared. The experimental results show that paraffin wax content, oil phase density and polarity have significant effects on the stability and microstructure of emulsions. By calculating and fitting the solid-liquid interface ratio of Janus emulsions, the quantitative relationship between solid-liquid interface ratio, surfactant concentration and oil phase composition was obtained. This provides a theoretical basis and experimental basis for interface solid-state encapsulation and regulation.

Coalescence of Janus droplets prepared by one-step vibrational mixing

Ge Lingling,Li Xia,Friberg Stig E.,Guo Rong

Janus emulsions are prepared by one-step vibrational mixing of two immiscible oils, silicone oil, SO, with density of 0.964 g/cm 3 and sunflower oil saturated with dimethyl phthalate, VO (DMP), with density of 0.991 g/cm 3 , and an aqueous solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate as continuous phase. The destabilization of Janus emulsion is followed by the change of layer dimension as well as the microscope image, illustrating the two main aspects of creaming and coalescence. The fundamental impasse of the final separation of the Janus drop oils against unfavorable free energy change is resolved by a numerical analysis on a model emulsion with realistic interfacial tension values to show a thermodynamically favored path to the final destabilization process.

Janus emulsions formed with organic solvents as inner phases

Chenguang Ding,Lingling Ge,Haimei Jin,Qingfa Bian,Rong Guo

Organic solvents are used as oil phases to prepare oil in water Janus emulsions by one-step vortex mixing. The categories of organic solvents cover alkanes, cycloalkanes , aromatics, alcohols and esters. Micrograph images show the well-defined Janus morphology composed by organic solvents and the corresponding immiscible oils. Topologies of “snowman”, “dumbbell” and “perfect Janus” are obtained, which depends on the category of organics. It is worth mention that two different topologies are obtained in one system, which is mainly determined by the density difference of two inner phases. In addition, the adjustment of oil/oil interface curvature is achieved by changing the surfactant concentration and also by the initial volume ratio of two inner phases. Moreover, the droplet size decreased significantly, from hundreds of micrometers continuously down to several micrometers is realized and more importantly, the topology of Janus droplets remains. The reported organic Janus emulsions with droplets constructed by two separated domains and sharp domain boundary would be ideal microreactors, templates for materials synthesis.

Magnetic response Janus emulsions stabilized by Mangeto-surfactant

Haixia Zhang,Lingling Ge,Chenguang Ding,Rong Guo

Magnetic response emulsions, with regulated motion of droplets by magnetic fields, provide opportunities in system design. Research in Janus emulsion is blooming attributed to excellent multiple chambers, diverse interfaces, and advanced structures. Responsive Janus emulsions are prepared, using two immiscible oils of dimethyl phthalate (DMP)/vegetable oil (VO) and small molecules of magneto-surfactants ([H-G-C 16 ]FeCl 4 ) as stabilizer, in batch-scale by traditional vortex mixing. The composition of emulsion, the concentration of surfactant, and the emulsification energy are applied to control the topology of the structured fluid, and more importantly achieve the quantitative regulation of magnetic response. Janus droplets with clear inner interfaces are successfully constructed solely by magneto-surfactant, and the strategy is universal and even extended to Cerberus emulsions composed of three separated compartments . The magnetic response is visualized by directed moving against gravity and saturated magnetization. The responsivity is enhanced about 44.5%-54.5% accompany with VO lobe transformation from “waxing crescent” to “full moon with a hole”. The magnetic response is increased as high as 80.0% by decreasing the droplet size. Delicate calculations reveal that the ordered arrangement of [H-G-C 16 ]FeCl 4 at the interfaces, mainly contributes to the magnetic response compared with aggregates in the continuous phase. The adsorption on the VO/aq interface dominates the overall response due to the higher affinity of the surfactant to the VO phase. The findings open an avenue in the production of magneto-responsive multiple emulsions , which would push forward future application in smart microreactors, intelligent fluids, and responsive delivery systems.

Crescent-shaped micromotor sorbents with sulfonic acid functionalized convex surface: The synthesis by A Janus emulsion strategy and adsorption for Li+

Yongqing Ren,Hao Li,Jinxin Liu,Mengdie Zhou,Jianming Pan

Self-propelled micromotor (SPM) plays a vital role in recycling of lithium (Li + ) from wastewater in battery industry. In this work, a crescent-shaped micromotor sorbent (CSMSs) with sulfonic group on convex surface was prepared by Janus emulsion to extract Li + . Using sodium p-styrene sulfonate as a functional monomer , well-designed CSMSs was prepared by UV-induced monomer interfacial polymerization, and their pit size can be controlled by adjusting the ratio of two incompatible oils (ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate and liquid paraffin). In addition, MnO 2 nanoparticles , which embedded into concave interface, generated O 2 bubbles in the presence of H 2 O 2 , and constant circular or line motion of CSMSs was observed. Zeta potential of CSMSs was −51.66 eV at pH = 10, and strong electrostatic attraction between sulfonate groups and Li + endowed the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 31 mg g −1 at 25 °C. Self-propelled effect further enhanced kinetic performance for Li + , and equilibrium time can be reduced from original 10–6.0 h, suggesting autonomous movement achieves rapid mixing and mass transportation. After three adsorption/desorption cycles, the adsorption capacity of the material remains above 90%. This simple and large-scale preparation strategy provided a synthetic method for functional and Janus SPM, as well as sorbents for Li + enrichment.

Droplet topology control of Janus emulsion prepared in one-step high energy mixing

Lingling Ge,Wanqing Shao,Shuhui Lu,Rong Guo

Droplet topology of a Janus emulsion in a vegetable oil (VO)/silicone oil (SO)/Tween 80 aqueous solution (Aq) system prepared in a one-step high energy mixing was investigated, mainly by image observation. Quantitative information of the topology was analyzed referring to the curvature of VO/SO interface, the location of contact plane, and the volume ratio of VO/SO within individual droplets. The results show that the “stable Janus emulsion” region in the phase map enlarges with surfactant concentration. The average volume ratio of two oil lobes within an individual Janus droplet agrees with the emulsion composition in the “stable Janus emulsion” region, which means that the droplet topology can be controlled by the emulsion preparation process within realistic limits. The volume ratio of VO/SO within individual droplet ranges from about 0.54 to 0.17 in the VO/SO/3 wt% Tween 80(Aq) system, beyond which separate VO and SO droplets are observed. The topology of a Janus droplet is found to be determined by both the contact angle of three liquids in the contact line and the location of the contact plane. The contact angle of the oil cap is determined by the interfacial tension referring to the local equilibrium. The location of the contact plane is the dominant factor determining the volume ratio of two oil lobes. Composition change in the emulsion results in the corresponding tune of the location of contact plane and subsequently, the volume ratio of two oils within Janus droplets.

Preparation of Anisotropic Micro-Hydrogels with Tunable Structural and Topographic Features by Compound Interfacial Shearing

Yuanqing Zhu,Rong Fan,Zhiyuan Zheng,Zhiqiang Zhu,Ting Si,Ronald X. Xu

We propose a compound interfacial shearing (CIS) process for versatile production of monodisperse Janus emulsions with controllable structural and topographic features. The process induces an active periodic force to decouple material and process parameters, enables independent control of compartmental features in Janus emulsions, and facilitates inline and on-demand generation of various geometric features for a large variety of process parameters and material properties. Janus emulsions of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) with a controlled number of compartments are produced by CIS and photopolymerized to form micro-hydrogels with designated interfacial curvatures. PEGDA micro-hydrogels can be further modified to achieve anisotropy of surface or internal features by the content of an oily dispersed phase. MCF-7 human breast cancer cells are encapsulated in micro-hydrogels for cell proliferation with satisfactory viability. By modifying PEGDA micro-hydrogels with RGDS-conjugated polystyrene microspheres, we have demonstrated the controlled spatial adhesion of MCF-7 cells and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) on the substrates of different three-dimensional (3D) curvatures. Our pilot study suggests a simple and potentially scalable approach to produce 3D substrates with controllable structural and topographic features for 3D guided cell organization.

Ionic Polymerization-Based Synthesis of Bioinspired Adhesive Hydrogel Microparticles with Tunable Morphologies from Microfluidics

Yingzhe Liu,Sida Ling,Zhuo Chen,Jianhong Xu

Shape-anisotropic hydrogel microparticles have attracted considerable attention for drug-delivery applications. Particularly, nonspherical hydrogel microcarriers with enhanced adhesive and circulatory abilities have demonstrated value in gastrointestinal drug administration. Herein, inspired by the structures of natural suckers, we demonstrate an ionic polymerization-based production of calcium (Ca)-alginate microparticles with tunable shapes from Janus emulsion for the first time. Monodispersed Janus droplets composed of sodium alginate and nongelable segments were generated using a coflow droplet generator. The interfacial curvatures, sizes, and production frequencies of Janus droplets can be flexibly controlled by varying the flow conditions and surfactant concentrations in the multiphase system. Janus droplets were ionically solidified on a chip, and hydrogel beads of different shapes were obtained. The in vitro and in vivo adhesion abilities of the hydrogel beads to the mouse colon were investigated. The anisotropic beads showed prominent adhesive properties compared with the spherical particles owing to their sticky hydrogel components and unique shapes. Finally, a novel computational fluid dynamics and discrete element method (CFD-DEM) coupling simulation was used to evaluate particle migration and contact forces theoretically. This review presents a simple strategy to synthesize Ca-alginate particles with tunable structures that could be ideal materials for constructing gastrointestinal drug delivery systems.
