A novel Janus composite membrane via hydrophilization of conventional PVDF hydrophobic membrane based on multiwall carbon nanotube (CNT) functionalized with carboxylic groups was investigated for use in membrane distillation. The modified membrane exhibited in-air water hydrophilicity and underwater oleophobicity. Interestingly, despite of the smaller effective pore size than that of the virgin membrane, the vapor flux was not compromised in the modified membrane, while a slight flux enhancement was observed, probably due to the high water permeability and heat conduction of the CNT layer, as suggested by the mass-heat transfer studies. Moreover, antifouling properties of the modified membrane were noted for treating a hexadecane emulsion of 1000 mg/L. The variation in the decrease in flux and the increase in conductivity was in line with force analysis between membrane and oil droplet, and the superior performance of modified membrane to the virgin membrane may be attributed to the good hydrophilicity of the functionalized CNT layer. Our results confirmed the hypothesis that CNT with high mass-heat transfer capability, homogeneously coated in a hydrophilic layer, may be promising candidate for fabricating a new-generation of fouling-resistant Janus membrane to treat oily wastewater.

Managing wound exudate, alleviating wound inflammation, and monitoring the healing process are the current focus of wound dressing research. However, the preparation of multifunctional dressings that simultaneously perform these functions remains a challenge. In this study, a pH-responsive Janus composite membrane with unidirectional moisture drainage and antioxidant properties is proposed for the wound healing process. This Janus composite membrane takes advantage of the difference in wettability between the hydrophilic polyacrylonitrile (PAN) layer and the hydrophobic polylactic acid (PLA) layer, which allows the fluid to be exported within 3 s and reduces the adhesion to the wound site. When the fibrous membrane was wetted, curcumin encapsulated in the fibers could be effectively released with a high antioxidant activity of 86.82 %. In response to pH changes during the wound healing process, the Janus composite membrane displays different colors under different conditions, which can be used to monitor wound healing. In addition, the biocompatibility of this Janus composite membrane increases the potential for its clinical use as a multifunctional wound dressing.

Two-dimensional (2D) membrane with ultrahigh permeability and precise sieving performance is highly desired. Herein, we have constructed a Janus composite membrane, which is integrated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and oxidized carbon spheres (OCS) modified with polyetherimide (PEI), through an interfacial self-assembly process. The designed Janus CNTs/OCS@PEI composite membrane has asymmetric micromorphology and wettability. The hydrophobic side is functioned as an active layer to inhibit concentration polarization during separation process. The superhydrophilic side can allow partial CNTs to stretch into its interior and form an interpenetrating network, which can weaken the Laplace pressure arising from the hydrophobic side. Hence, this membrane has the ability to reject various dye molecules, such as congo red (permeance flux of 3110.2 ± 285 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and efficiency about 98.8%), which has transcended the majority of the separation membranes previously reported. Furthermore, this membrane can withstand physical damage and chemical corrosion that has presented stable rejection performance for dye molecules. This intriguing work would open the door to developing novel Janus materials to satisfy the water resources requirements of real-world applications.

The development of advanced membranes for the efficient separation of oil-water emulsions and the degradation of soluble pollutants is crucial for environmental protection. This study presents a Janus composite membrane with Co(CO 3 ) 0.5 OH·0.11H 2 O nanoneedle arrays, fabricated through electrospinning, membrane assembly, surface hydrophobization, and chemical bath deposition (CBD). By controlling the amount of carbon nanofiber (CNF) and CBD time, the membrane's morphology can be optimized for improved performance. In dead-end filtration driven by gravity, the membrane effectively separates stabilized oil-in-water emulsions and demonstrates strong anti-fouling capabilities. Furthermore, the membrane exhibits significant catalytic activation for peroxymonosulfate (PMS), enabling complete restoration of water flux of polluted membranes and purifying emulsions with soluble organic pollutants . To further enhance anti-fouling performance, a novel separation strategy integrating pulse current is proposed. Under the influence of a pulsed electric field, the membrane achieves a permeate flux nearly twice as high as that observed without this external stimulus, while maintaining high separation efficiency. This research advances Janus nanofiber membrane development via electrospinning techniques and supports sustainable treatment of oily wastewater.

The implantation of covered stents has significantly contributed much to the rescue treatment of coronary artery perforation (CAP). The ability to achieve rapid hemostasis in cases of severe coronary artery perforation using covered stents alone has so far been elusive. Here, we investigate a Janus composite covered stent for rapid hemostasis in CAP. The covered stent has the dual functions of sealing perforation and rapid hemostasis, which is suitable for the rescue of CAP. This achievement is realized by assembling the tough polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane and the drug-loaded hemostatic coating, thereby amalgamating their distinct functionalities. The PVDF membrane served as a physical shield that prevented blood leakage and blocked procoagulant drugs from forming the thrombus in the vessel. Meanwhile, the drug-loaded hemostatic coating, when in contact with the perforation area, swiftly procoagulant. The in vitro cytocompatibility and coagulation property tests demonstrated excellent biocompatibility and hemostatic performance of the Janus composite covered stent. The approach is applicable across almost all sizes of common bare stents in clinical, which has great potential for the rescue of CAP.
