Given the complexity and diversity of actual oily sewages, developing multifunctional separation materials with features of high separation efficiency and low energy consumption for separating diverse oil/water emulsions is urgently needed, yet it remains a formidable challenge till now. Herein, a superior graphene/poly(vinyl alcohol) Janus aerogel (J-CGPA), showing an intriguing three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical architecture (a dense skin-layer and a larger internal cell network) and desirable asymmetric wettability, was exploited via a simple direct freeze-shaping technique and subsequent mussel-inspired hydrophilic modification. Benefiting from the controlled unilateral decoration of dopamine, the resultant aerogels displayed completely opposite superwettability on two antithetic sides, i.e., one side is highly hydrophobic (water contact angle (WCA), 143°), whereas the other side is superhydrophilic. On the basis of the favorable 3D hierarchical structure and binary cooperative superwetting properties, the Janus aerogels achieved a remarkable switchable separation performance for both highly emulsified oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions as well as stratified oil/water mixtures accompanied with outstanding separation efficiencies. Particularly, an ultrahigh permeation flux of 1306 L m–2 h–1 along with a high rejection efficiency of 99.7% was acquired solely under the driving of gravity (<1 kPa), which is 1–2 order of magnitude higher than that of pioneering two-dimensional Janus polymeric/inorganic membranes recently reported. Moreover, together with robust reusability, this novel 3D Janus aerogel indicates a promising practical application for high-performance oily wastewater remediation.

Janus structural interfacial vaporization by separating the solar absorber from the bulk working fluid has attracted tremendous attention due to its low heat losses and high solar conversion efficiency for desalination, water purification, energy generation, etc. However, a totally separated double-deck structure with a discontinuous interfacial transition and inefficient photothermic materials undermines its long-term use and large-scale practical exploitation. Herein, a low-cost Janus monolithic chitosan aerogel with continuous aligned run-through microchannels has been demonstrated to have a highly efficient photothermic effect on seawater desalination and wastewater purification. The top solar absorber layer enhances broadband light absorption and photothermal conversion efficiency via the multiple internal reflection of incident light in the aligned microchannels. Moreover, the insulating/hydrophilic bottom layer promotes water transportation and heat localization, and simultaneously prevents salt/fouling accumulation. As a result, a long-term solar vaporization rate of ∼1.76 kg m–2 h–1 is achieved, corresponding to a light-to-vapor efficiency of ∼91% under 1 sun irradiation. Notably, the large-vessel microchannels throughout the aerogel and favorable swelling property provide sufficient water replenishment and storage for completely isolating self-contained evaporation, illustrating an enhanced and time-extended self-contained solar steam generation. Such a low-cost bilayer aerogel with remarkable cycling stability in various fluids offers potential opportunities for freshwater production in remote rural areas.

Effective and practical cleanup of viscous crude oil spills is extremely important in real harsh marine environments. Herein, we designed a solar–driven, nanocellulose-based Janus aerogel (Janus-A) with excellent floating stability and dual function of oil–water separation and degradation of aqueous organic pollutants. Janus-A, with its amphiprotic nature, was prepared through polypyrrole (PPy) deposition, freeze-drying, octyltrichlorosilane (OTS) impregnation, TiO 2 spraying on the bottom surface, and UV irradiation treatment. The photothermal conversion effect of PPy coating raised the surface temperature of aerogel to 75.8 °C within 6 min under one simulated solar irradiation, which greatly reduced the viscosity of the crude oil and increased the absorption capacity of the aerogel to 36.7 g/g. Benefiting from the balance between the buoyancy generated by the hydrophobic part and water absorption of the hydrophilic part, Janus-A showed excellent floating stability under simulated winds and waves. In addition, Janus-A exhibited high degradation efficiency for organic pollutants in water owing to the synergistic photocatalytic properties of TiO 2 and PPy. These excellent performances make Janus-A ideal for integrated water–oil separation and water remediation.

Seeking an efficient and robust evaporator is the central goal of solar-driven interfacial steam generation. Here, a free-standing Janus aerogel with rough hydrophobic upper layer and smooth hydrophilic bottom layer was tailored by freeze drying of polypyrrole-polyvinyl alcohol (PPy/PVA) colloidal solution, followed by acetalization treatment and selective fluorination decoration. PPy/PVA-F Janus aerogel has a structure integrated in the form of different microscopic layers and chemical compositions, endowing it with omnidirectional light absorption , stable floating on water, enhanced evaporation performance, and salt rejection capability. Due to the reduced vaporization enthalpy, evaporation rate of 1.68 kg·m −2 ·h −1 with solar-to-vapor efficiency of 94.7% was obtained under 1-sun irradiation using the Janus aerogel. Furthermore, the Janus aerogel demonstrated good recyclability and long-term durability at different radiation intensities . This Janus aerogel had satisfactory availability for solar desalination and sewage treatment . The strategy to integrate different microscopic layers and chemical compositions in a Janus aerogel holds great promise for the design and application of Janus evaporators in the field of solar steam generation.

Freshwater scarcity and energy shortages stand as two of the most pressing global challenges confronting modern society. The integration of solar-driven interfacial evaporation with the hydrovoltaic effect emerges as a highly promising strategy to address both issues simultaneously. In this study, we report the development of Janus Nb 2 CT X /graphene aerogels (NGAs) specifically engineered to synergistically facilitate solar-driven seawater evaporation and hydrovoltaic power generation. The Janus NGAs were fabricated via a combination of hydrothermal reaction, freeze-drying, and surface modification techniques, yielding a three-dimensional porous architecture with distinct hydrophilic-hydrophobic asymmetry—a key structural feature for their dual-functional performance. Under 1 sun irradiation, the optimized NGA-3 sample achieved a high seawater evaporation rate of 1.64 kg·m −2 h −1 and an exceptional photothermal conversion efficiency of 86.61 %, attributed to the reduced water evaporation enthalpy (1904 kJ·kg −1 ) induced by the formation of intermediate water within the aerogel's porous structure. Meanwhile, the Nb 2 CT X MXene component enhances broadband sunlight absorption through the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, further boosting photothermal conversion. Concurrently, the NGAs exhibit robust hydrovoltaic performance: in NaCl solution, NGA-3 generated a stable output voltage of 147 mV under 1 sun and 236 mV under 3 sun. A peak power density of 197 μW·cm −2 was achieved in 10 wt% NaCl solution, demonstrating its adaptability to high-salinity environments. Additionally, the NGAs maintain excellent salt resistance and long-term operational stability. The synergistic integration of efficient photothermal conversion and electricity harvesting in the Janus NGAs offers a viable solution to alleviate global freshwater and energy pressures.

Diabetic wounds are difficult to heal, which increases the difficulty of treatment and aggravates the suffering of patients. Especially its intractable large amount of exudate puts forward more stringent requirements for dressings. The accumulation of excessive exudate would prolong inflammation phase and delay wound healing. To manage wound exudate in time and get through the inflammatory phase smoothly, we developed a Janus nanofibrous aerogel with asymmetric wetting properties. The Janus nanofibrous aerogel has a micropattern obtained from cellular nanofibrous structure, which does not require external force to realize the autonomous, rapid and unidirectional transportation of exudate. Benefiting from its structure and fluid gating characteristics, it can not only absorb high-volume liquid but also effectively prohibit liquid penetration in reverse. Besides, the Janus nanofibrous aerogel has excellent antibacterial and antioxidant properties to synergistically promote wound healing. Experiments in diabetic mice model showed that Janus nanofibrous aerogel can prevent maceration of peri-wound tissue, shorten the inflammation phase, and promote diabetic wound healing. Its good elasticity and easy production characteristics are friendly for clinical application.
