Hydrogels have indeed achieved significant advancements, yet their clinical translation has been hampered by their inherent limitations in wet adhesion properties. Furthermore, the design of adhesive hydrogels that can resist postoperative adhesions remains an intricate challenge. In this study, we introduce a Janus hydrogel (JGP) that offers a novel approach to address these challenges. The JGP hydrogel has two asymmetrical sides, consisting of an adhesion layer (AL) and an anti-adhesion layer (AAL). Specifically, the AL incorporates three key components: N-[tris(hydroxymethyl)methyl]acrylamide (THMA), acrylic acid (AAc), and the acrylic acid N-hydroxysuccinimide ester (AAc-NHS). By drying the AL, it has a rapid water absorption capability. The abundance of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups in the AL enables the formation of robust hydrogen bonds with tissues, thereby achieving superior adhesive properties. Additionally, the synergistic effect of THMA's tridentate hydrogen bonding and the covalent bonding formed by AAc-NHS with tissue ensures long-lasting wet adhesion. To realize the anti-adhesion function, one side of the AL was immersed in a solution of [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide (SBMA), which undergoes crosslinking to form the AAL. A comprehensive series of tests have confirmed that the JGP hydrogel exhibits exceptional mechanical properties, efficient and enduring adhesion, excellent biocompatibility, and degradability. Moreover, it possesses remarkable hemostatic properties and robust anti-abdominal adhesion characteristics.

Conductive hydrogels with self-adhesive property have received increasing attention in the fields of human–computer interaction, smart wearable devices, and soft electronic materials; however, they are easily contaminated by oil due to their sticky property, which will degrade their appearance and performance in daily use and make it difficult to be used in the complex oily water environment. Herein, a type of Janus TA@PVA/PSBMA hydrogel with slippery oil repellency and sticky adhesion is prepared by partially compounding the PVA/PSBMA hydrogel with tannic acid (TA) molecules through a unilateral soaking method. The upper PVA/PSBMA hydrogel layer in the Janus hydrogel exhibits excellent antioil fouling capability in air, underwater, and even under oil environments, because of the strong water affinity of the zwitterionic PSBMA chains. Interestingly, the bottom TA@PVA/PSBMA hydrogel layer can adhere to various substrates with bonding strength through active interactions between the TA molecules and the substrates. Exploiting its conductive, antifouling, and self-adhesive properties, the obtained Janus TA@PVA/PSBMA hydrogel is demonstrated as a strain sensor that can stably monitor large and subtle body movements in air, underwater, and oily wastewater. This work is expected to present a material for reliable sensing in complex environments.

Zwitterionic hydrogel paints are promising and ecofriendly materials to prevent biofouling and oil contamination. However, the weak adhesion of hydrogel paints to substrates and tedious fabrication and coating processes limit their practical applications. Herein, a novel self-generating zwitterionic Janus hydrogel paint consisting of a polymer copolymerized by methyl methacrylate (MMA), tertiary carboxybetaine triisopropylsilyl ester ethyl acrylate (TCBSi), and 3-(methacryloxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (KH570) is reported. The polymer, when coated on a substrate, self-crosslinks into the polymer network and interlinks to the substrate during curing. This polymer decouples polymerization from the crosslinking and interlinking processes. When used underwater, the top layer of the coating rapidly hydrolyzes and self-generates a zwitterionic hydrogel layer, whereas the hydrophobic bottom layer remains unhydrolyzed. Adhesion tests show that this coating has considerably stronger adhesion strength than traditional zwitterionic hydrogel coatings due to the synergistic effect of hydrophobic interactions and interface bonding. Moreover, it has excellent resistance to protein, bacteria ( Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus , and Pseudomonas sp.), and diatom ( Navicula incerta ). The self-generating zwitterionic Janus hydrogel coating can also prevent oil contamination. This study serves as a promising avenue for the design and fabrication as well as practical application of self-generating zwitterionic Janus hydrogel paint with strong substrate adhesion.

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)-based hydrogels are widely used in the preparation of Janus actuators due to their remarkable temperature-responsive properties. However, preparing PNIPAM-based hydrogel actuators with excellent mechanical properties, mass transfer ability, and programmable deformation, as well as gaining a profound and systematic understanding of their driving mechanisms, remains a challenge to date. To address these challenges, an efficient PNIPAM-hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose/polyacrylamide-Graphene oxide (PNIPAM-HPMC/PAM-GO) Janus hydrogel actuator with strong interfacial stability was constructed based on the self-generation method; PNIPAM-HPMC was used as the active layer, and PAM-GO was used as the passive layer. The introduction of HPMC makes the active layer have excellent tensile strength (7.55–28.3 kPa) and mass transfer ability (39.07–73.03%), thereby improving the deformation ability of the actuator (239–360°). It can still achieve a 360° deformation after being actuated repeatedly 5 times. The deformation dynamics of the Janus hydrogel actuator under thermal response conditions were quantitatively analyzed by real-time tracking of the response behavior, and the important role of mechanical moduli in the deformation process of the Janus hydrogel actuator was revealed for the first time. Therein, the effect of the elastic modulus difference on the deformation of the actuator is 48 times that of the compression modulus difference. Finally, the Janus hydrogel actuator with high interface stability, mechanical robustness, time-programmable, and double-layer integration prepared in this work shows potential application in the fields of bionics, intelligent switches, and display systems.

Solar water purification is a promising scheme to relieve the energy crisis and clean water shortages. In order to improve the efficiency of producing water, it is necessary to develop a novel photothermal conversion interface to manage heat loss and boost water evaporation efficiency. Herein, a Janus hydrogel evaporator of powder active carbon (PAC) and Fe 3 O 4 in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) cross-link hydrogel, called CFPS, is explored as the light absorber for broadband light absorption and formed a hydrogel network of the multi-hydrophilic group. Its hydrophilic/hydrophobic structure of CFPS is used to regulate heat loss and promote water transport, which can attain lower evaporation enthalpy and a higher evaporation rate . Specifically, the surface temperature of the CFPS can reach around 45 °C and 93.4% energy utilization efficiency under 1 sun illumination. In the comparison of the analogous Fe 3 O 4 -based evaporator, CFPS has the higher static evaporation rate with 3.43 kg m –2 h −1 . Besides, it has great mechanical properties, durability and anti-crystallization function, which can be adapted to the water purification scene of wastewater and hypersaline water desalination. This photosensitive magnetic hydrogel evaporator shows potential in the scenarios of wastewater purification and desalination.

This study introduces a novel design for pH-sensitive bilayer Janus hydrogels with bidirectional bending capabilities, achieved through the layer-by-layer polymerization of two distinct hydrogel layers. The upper layer, composed of P(HEMA -co- 4VP), swells in acidic environments due to the protonation of pyridine groups, inducing bending toward one side. Conversely, the lower layer, made of P(HEMA -co- AA), expands in alkaline conditions by deprotonation, causing bending toward the opposite direction. The bilayer hydrogel demonstrates significant shape deformations, influenced by variations in layer thickness and pH conditions. Detailed analyses of swelling behaviors, compressive toughness, and rheological properties reveal that the unique composition ensures distinct and tunable mechanical responses. Furthermore, hydrogels fabricated into complex geometries, such as flower- and starfish-shaped structures, showcase practical applications in soft robotics and biomimetic devices. The versatility of the design is further confirmed by substituting P(HEMA -co- 4VP) with P(HEMA -co- DMAEMA), which maintained the bidirectional bending responses under both acidic and alkaline conditions. This research expands the theoretical understanding of stimulus-responsive hydrogels and offers an innovative platform for designing intelligent actuators adaptable to diverse and dynamic environments.

Nasal diseases are pervasive infections that can impair the quality of life of sufferers. In this study, a flexible modified triplochitin scleroxylon (MTS)-based Janus hydrogel (MTS@P/DLT) was obtained by disrupting the homogeneity of the system using DL-α-tocopherol (DLT) with flexible wood as the framework and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as the outer matrix. At a PVA concentration of 10 wt %, DLT formed a homogeneous layer, as revealed by electron microscopy. Mechanical property analysis showed that chemical and hydrogel modifications significantly increased the flexibility and toughness of the hydrogel. Microscopic and macroscopic assessment of the characteristics of the two sides of the MTS@P/DLT hydrogel revealed that one side of the DLT film had antiadhesion effects. Molecular dynamics simulation was used to determine the movement law of DLT in a PVA solution. The stronger intermolecular force between DLT and PVA than that between DLT and water, as well as between DLT molecules, enabled the formation of a homogeneous DLT film by controlling the concentration of PVA. In vitro and in vivo models demonstrated the potential of MTS@P/DLT to resist infection and facilitate recovery. Thus, MTS@P/DLT is promising for medical use.

Hemostasis and subsequent anti-inflammatory measures are essential for wound healing in the human body following trauma or surgical procedures. Here, we try to use the dragging effect of a brush to prepare a Janus hydrogel with the least amount of bacteriostatic agent. The synthesized suspension of polyvinylbenzene-silica@quaternary ammonium salt (PDVB-SiO 2 @NR 4 + ) Janus particles (JNPs) was selected as ink and brush coated onto one side of a polyacrylic acid (PAA) hydrogel, resulting in Janus hydrogel (JNPs≌PAA). The anisotropic chemical composition, wetting properties, adhesion capabilities, and the obtained hemostatic performance of the Janus hydrogel were studied thoroughly. The hydrophilic PAA side promoted tissue adhesion, while the hydrophobic JNPs side exhibited antibacterial effects. The Janus hydrogel presented perfect hemostatic effect in vivo , owing to the procoagulant effect of the adhesive layer, negative charges, and blood-blocking properties of the hydrophobic layer. The presence of quaternary ammonium groups in the Janus hydrogel imparted strong antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus . Furthermore, the Janus hydrogel showed a low hemolysis rate and high cell safety. This multifunctional hydrogel material holds great promise for wound treatment and expands the applications of hydrogel materials in the biomedical field.

Infected burn wound repair is hindered by bacterial infection, inflammatory imbalance, and oxidative stress. Conventional antibiotic treatments face challenges from drug-resistant bacteria and biofilm formation, limiting their ability to improve the wound microenvironment. To address this change and provide a more comprehensive solution, we developed a Janus-structured smart hydrogel (P//GH + Ni + ZnO) that integrates NiCo 2 O 4 nano-enzymes and ZnO nanoparticles. The combination of these two components provides synergistic antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, and mitochondrial protective effects, enhancing the therapeutic effect. In vitro , the hydrogel effectively inhibited drug-resistant bacteria, reduced ROS levels, stabilized mitochondrial membrane potential, and protected cellular function via PINK1/Parkin-mediated mitochondrial autophagy. Additionally, it promoted cell migration, angiogenesis, and tissue regeneration by optimizing the wound microenvironment. Building on the positive in vitro results, in vivo studies further confirmed its ability to accelerate wound healing, enhance M2 macrophage polarization, reduce TNF-α expression, and promote angiogenesis and tissue repair through TNF and VEGF signaling pathways. In summary, this Janus hydrogel significantly improved infected burn wound healing through its intelligent antimicrobial, immunoregulatory, and mitochondrial protective effects, offering a promising biomaterial solution for complex wound management and advancing the application of smart hydrogels in tissue repair.

Conductive hydrogels that possess strong mechanical performances and outstanding adhesion property have a broad prospect of application. However, it is still a great challenge to reach the good balance between mechanical and adhesive properties. In this paper, we present a simple method to prepare a Janus hydrogel with high strength, adhesive and conductive for wearable strain sensor. Firstly, the GO-TA-P(DMAEMA- AA-AM) hydrogel was fabricated through the copolymerization of 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), acrylamide (AM) and acrylic acid (AA) in the existence of tannic acid and graphene oxide. Then, the obtained GO-TA-P(DMAEMA-AA-AM) hydrogel was cross-linked with Fe 3+ to enhance mechanical properties by immersing into the ferric chloride solution. Finally, the Janus hydrogel was constructed by soaking one side of the hydrogel into ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) solution to achieve coordination-induced chelating Fe 3+ to form an adhesive surface on a tough hydrogel. The Janus hydrogel showed high mechanical strength (fracture stress of 256 kPa, fracture strain of 213 %, Young's modulus of 234 kPa, toughness of 302.8 kJ/m 3 ) and good adhesion (adhesion strength for stainless steel reached 23.5 kPa) properties. In addition, this hydrogel has good sensing properties with high strain sensitivity and stability which displayed great prospects in the field of electronic sensors.

Janus hydrogels for human motion monitoring are thriving due to their conductivity, flexibility, anisotropy and self-adhesion, etc. However, most of them face challenges such as complex processes, interlayer detachment, and surface contamination, which degrade their sensing accuracy and sensitivity. Hence, this study proposes a facile strategy using the cellulose and lignin as building blocks to construct a Janus hydrogel for accurate and sensitive sensing. The proposed process involves sequential pouring and in-situ thermal-induced polymerization. Initially, the cellulose dissolved in ZnCl 2 solution, along with acrylic acid (Cel/ZnCl 2 -AA), forms the antifouling and conductive precursors in the top layer, while lignosulfonate and acrylamide (LS-AM) function as the adhesive precursor in the bottom layer. The viscosity difference of the two precursors allows local diffusion and polymerization at the interlayer interface, thereby developing a bilayer structure with strong interface bonds. Consequently, the Janus hydrogel exhibits high conductivity (1.2 S/m), excellent asymmetric adhesion, good stretchability (520 %) and compressive strain (∼70 %). These properties enable the hydrogel to accurately monitor both large (elbow and wrist bending) and small (swallowing and frowning) human movements with accurate sensitivity (gauge factor up to 2). This work offers new insight and synthesis strategy to design the bilayer hydrogels for practical applications in electronic skin and flexible sensing.

Janus hydrogels have promising applications in tendon healing and anti-peritendinous adhesions. However, their complicated preparation methods, weak mechanical properties, and unstable adhesion interfaces have severely limited their application in suture-free and high-quality tendon healing. In this work, by controlling the interfacial distribution of free -COOH groups and cationic-π structures on both sides of the hydrogels, a series of PZBA-EGCG-ALC Janus hydrogels with varying degrees of asymmetric properties are successfully prepared using a simple and efficient one-step synthesis method. The tensile strength and elongation at the break of the Janus hydrogel are as high as 0.51 ± 0.04 MPa and 922.89 ± 28.59%. In addition, the Janus hydrogel can achieve a high difference in adhesion strength (nearly 20-fold) while maintaining a strong adhesion strength on their bottom sides (up to 524.8 ± 33.1 J m −2 ). In the spatial dimension, its excellent mechanical compliance and one-sided adhesion behavior can provide effective mechanical support and physical barriers for the injured Achilles tendons. More importantly, the Janus hydrogel can also minimize early inflammation generation in the time dimension via its ROS-responsive PZBA-EGCG prodrug macromolecules. This study provided a more effective and convenient suture-free strategy for constructing Janus hydrogels to promote high-quality tendon healing.
