Hemostasis of incompressible trauma has been a challenge in the field of injury first aid, and these wounds are not suitable for the traditional dressings and for applying pressure to stop hemorrhage together. In this study, a Janus sponge of bioactive glass-poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PBG-PNIPAM) with mimic tissue structure was prepared by attaching different modified BG nanoparticles to the top and bottom layers of a polyvinyl alcohol sponge to improve hemostasis at incompressible wounds. Upon contacted with blood, the hydrophilic layer which was push into the internal tissue released Ca 2+ and SiO 4 4− to activate the endogenous and exogenous coagulation cascade to accelerate blood coagulation, while the hydrophobic layer with excellent breathability kept in epidermis could block wound to decrease the blood loss and prevent the growth of bacteria. In the rat incompressible model, the blood loss of PBG-PNIPAM Janus sponge was much less than 2.3 times of the commercially available gelatin hemostatic sponge. In vitro results showed that the PBG-PNIPAM Janus sponge exhibited excellent clotting ability, high hemocompatibility and low cytotoxicity. This composite Janus sponge with hemostatic and antibacterial properties is expected to be applied in sharp instrument injuries. Graphical

Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is effective in repairing serious skin injury. The dressing used in the NPWT is important for wound healing. In this paper, we develop biodegradable amphiphilic polyurethanes (PUs) and fabricate the PUs into sponges as wound dressings (Bi@e) with Janus pore architectures for NPWT. The Bi@e is adaptive to all the stages of the wound healing process. The Janus Bi@e sponge consists of two layers: the dense hydrophobic upper layer with small pores provides protection and support during negative pressure drainage, and the loose hydrophilic lower layer with large pores absorbs large amounts of wound exudate and maintains a moist environment. Additionally, antibacterial agent silver sulfadiazine (SSD) is loaded into the sponge against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus with a concentration of 0.50 wt%. The Janus sponge exhibits a super absorbent capacity of 19.53 times its own water weight and remarkable resistance to compression. In a rat skin defect model, the Janus Bi@e sponge not only prevents the conglutination between regenerative skin and dressing but also accelerates wound healing compared to commercially available NPWT dressing. The Janus Bi@e sponge is a promising dressing for the NPWT.

The development of separation materials with high flux, anti-oil fouling, long-term stability, and the ability to remove various pollutants is an urgent requirement in the field of oil-water separation. Herein, we designed a Janus sponge with multiple separation functions. Specifically, we first prepared the PCA-CS gel coating on the polyurethane (PU) sponge through the co-deposition of protocatechuic acid (PCA) and chitosan (CS), and then Janus sponge was obtained through bottom-up approach of adsorbing stearic acid (SA) and an ethanol suspension of titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ). The prepared Janus sponge exhibits excellent wetting behavior and oil adhesion resistance, and can maintain stable performance in acidic, alkaline, saline solutions and ultrasonic environment. The pore size of the Janus sponge can be adjusted by mechanical compression to efficiently separate various types of emulsions, dyes and mixed wastewater. Among them, the emulsion and dye separation efficiency can both be above 99.6 %, and can maintain the high flux with 15372.7 L m −2 h −1 . More importantly, the prepared Janus sponge can effectively remove the emulsified oil droplets from the wastewater generated by the automotive final assembly shop. Consequently, it can be predicted that Janus sponge exhibits great application potential in emulsion and dye wastewater treatment.

In recent years, solar-driven interfacial evaporation materials for seawater desalination and wastewater treatment have garnered significant interest. Hydrogels are considered promising candidates due to their high evaporation rates. However, traditional hydrogel-based solar evaporators are limited by the poor salt resistance and deteriorated mechanical properties. This work successfully constructed a Janus PSPH@CP double-layer solar evaporator with excellent comprehensive performance. It consists of a hydrophobic C/PDMS (CP) coating and a hydrophilic PSPH substrate using polyurethane foam (PU) as skeleton, with its pores filled with the SA/PVA hydrogel and hollow SiO 2 micro-spheres. The superhydrophobic carbon-containing upper coating provides robust light absorption capacity (97 %) and effective salt resistance, while the lower PU foam provides the solar evaporator a solid porous framework with excellent mechanical property. The SP hydrogel, which wraps the inner wall of the PU, is used as a water transport medium due to its superhydrophilic network. Finally, the hollow SiO 2 micro-spheres are embedded in the pores to enhance thermal insulation and optimize thermal management. The integration of the hydrogel and hollow SiO 2 microspheres optimized evaporation enthalpy and thermal management, resulting in an evaporation rate as high as 2.72 kg m -2 h −1 . Meanwhile, the asymmetric wetting characteristics of the solar evaporator’s enable strong salt resistance. As a result, an optimal between the evaporation efficiency and salt resistance is obtained in the fabricated PSPH@CP solar evaporator. The efficient water evaporation, excellent salt resistance, straightforward large-area preparation, and low-cost raw materials suggest that the Janus PSPH@CP solar evaporator has broad prospects for practical applications.

Guided bone regeneration (GBR) is currently the most widely used bone augmentation technique in oral clinics. However, infection and soft tissue management remain the greatest challenge. In this study, a Janus sponge/electrospun fibre membrane containing epidermal growth factor (EGF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and chlorhexidine (CHX) were prepared to optimize its application as a barrier membrane for GBR. The loose sponge part was covalently bonded with the fiber part which has a dense structure. The composed scaffold exhibited superior biocompatibility and antibacterial activity verified by in vitro test. A rat model of unilateral skull bone injury was used to confirm the effectiveness on both hard and soft tissue regeneration. The chitosan sponge on the soft tissue side containing EGF, bFGF and CHX had a loose structure, promoting collagen and cell regeneration and exerting an antibacterial effect. Meanwhile, the dense PLGA/PCL layer on the hard tissue side prevented fibroblast entry into the bone defect, thereby facilitating bone regeneration. The Janus composite scaffold provides a promising strategy for oral tissue restoration.

Interfacial solar-driven evaporation technology shows great potential in the field of industrial seawater desalination, and the development of efficient and low-cost evaporation materials is key to achieving large-scale applications. Hydrogels are considered to be promising candidates; however, conventional hydrogel-based interfacial solar evaporators have difficulty in simultaneously meeting multiple requirements, including a high evaporation rate, salt resistance, and good mechanical properties. In this study, a Janus sponge-like hydrogel solar evaporator (CPAS) with excellent comprehensive performance was successfully constructed. The introduction of biomass agar (AG) into the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel backbone reduced the enthalpy of water evaporation, optimized the pore structure, and improved the mechanical properties. Meanwhile, by introducing hydrophobic fumed nano-silica aerogel (SA) and a synergistic foaming-crosslinking process, the hydrogel spontaneously formed a Janus structure with a hydrophobic surface and hydrophilic bottom properties. Based on the reduction of the evaporation enthalpy and the modulation of the pore structure, the CPAS evaporation rate reached 3.56 kg m −2 h −1 under one sun illumination. Most importantly, owing to the hydrophobic top surface and 3D-interconnected porous channels, the evaporator could work stably in high concentrations of salt-water (25 wt% NaCl), showing strong salt resistance. Efficient water evaporation, excellent salt resistance, scalable preparation processes, and low-cost raw materials make CPAS extremely promising for practical applications.
