High-performance solar interface evaporators provide a promising, sustainable, and cost-effective solution to the global freshwater crisis through seawater purification. However, achieving a delicate balance between maximizing the evaporation rate and ensuring continuous, stable, and durable operation presents a critical challenge. Herein, we present a biomimetic cellulose/polypyrrole-coated silica/graphene evaporator with self-assembled nanofiber networks and vertically aligned vessels for enhanced salt resistance. Asymmetric wettable surfaces are constructed by precisely controlling cellulose nanofibers surface siloxane groups via thermal actuation. The hydrophobic surface layer prevents salting accumulation, and the unique biomimetic cell structure of the lower hydrophilic layer acts as a stem for fast water transportation. Flexible vertical channels and interconnecting networks constructed of cellulose fibers with high porosity enable the simultaneous achievement of maximum solar absorption (light absorption efficiency: 96.34 %), exceptional mechanical properties and continuous water channels for mass transfer. The hierarchical structure and functional constituents contribute to an impressive evaporation rate of 2.78 kg m −2 h −1 under one-sun illumination. The evaporator further performs remarkable outdoors and maintains reliability in highly concentrated salt water (20 wt%). The Janus-structured, salt-rejecting biomimetic aerogel evaporator developed in this study presents an eco-friendly and cost-effective solution for sustainable clean water production.

Solar-powered interfacial evaporation is emerging as a promising way to desalinate water and address global freshwater scarcity. The combination of a high water production rate and salt resistance capacity is highly desirable in the solar steam generation process, yet still challenging to realize. To overcome this problem, a suspended interfacial evaporator was developed using the Janus Ag/PDA textile. The Janus wettability of the Ag/PDA textile facilitated the unidirectional movement of water from the top to the bottom surface. The suspended type design of the Ag/PDA textile evaporator was capable of reducing heat dissipation to bulk water and enhancing localized heat generation significantly under solar illumination, thereby facilitating effective desalination. The steam generation rate reached an impressive 2.96 kg m -2 h −1 under one sun of solar irradiation. Remarkably, no salt crystallisation was observed on the evaporator surface during a 50 h continuous experiment in a highly saline environment (15 wt% NaCl). The remarkable salt inhibition capacity was attributed to three factors, including the salt rejection effect, the salt removal effect, and the salt dissolution effect. It is hoped that this work will inspire the development of a durable solar steam evaporator.

As the interlayer between the skin and the environment, textiles play a vital role in achieving personal comfort and safety by managing the localized human body thermal and moisture conditions. However, intense exercise or sunlight exposure in hot and humid outdoor environments still leads to the accumulation of heat and excessive sweat on the human body. This reduces industrial labor productivity and results in economic losses. Herein, a sandwich-structured textile with a hierarchically nanofibrous network and Janus wettability is demonstrated. This textile exhibits excellent spectral selectivity (with a solar reflectance of 93.4% and a human body infrared emittance of 96.3%), rapid sweat evaporation rate (0.26 g h −1 ), and directional water transport property (a one-way transport index of 1140%). In a practical scenario, a human body covered by this sandwich-structured textile achieved a temperature drop of ∼ 4.2 °C compared with a commercial cotton textile. Through the integration of decent outdoor radiative cooling and continuous sweat wicking-drying properties, this sandwich-structured textile exhibits enhanced personal thermal and moisture management performance. Consequently, this textile leads to a significant reduction in human sweat consumption and excessive heat stress in outdoor environments.

Chronic wounds have imposed a severe physical and economic burden on the global healthcare system, which are usually treated by the delivery of drugs or bioactive molecules to the wound bed through wound dressings. In this work, we have demonstrated a hydrogel-functionalized bandage with Janus wettability in a bilayer structure to achieve unidirectional drug delivery and multifunctional wound care. The Janus patterned bandage with porous gradient wetting channels on the upper layer is responsible for the unidirectional transport of the drug from the outside to the wound bed (up to 90% drug transport efficiency) while preventing drug diffusion in unwanted directions (<8%). The hydrogel composed of chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (HACC), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) at the bottom layer further functionalized such a bandage with biocompatibility, excellent antibacterial properties, and hemostatic ability to promote wound healing. Especially, the hydrogel-functionalized bandage with Janus wettability exhibits excellent mechanical flexibility (∼198% strain), which can comply well with skin deformation (stretching, bending, or twisting) and maintain unidirectional drug delivery behavior without any leakage. The in vivo full-thickness skin wound model confirms that the hydrogel-functionalized bandage can significantly facilitate epithelialization and collagen deposition and improve drug delivery efficiency, thus promoting wound closure and healing (the wound healing ratio was 98.10% at day 15). Such a synergistic strategy of unidirectional drug delivery and multifunctional wound care provides a more efficient, economical, and direct method to promote wound healing, which could be used as a potential high-performance wound dressing for clinical application.
