Low-salinity nanofluid – A smart fluid enhanced oil recovery method

Jie Cao,Yingpeng Chen,Xiujun Wang,Jian Zhang,Ying Li,Zhao Hua,Xinming Wang,Shang Zhao

This paper proposes a novel Janus graphene nanofluid that enhances the low salinity water oil flooding performance. Two kinds of Janus hydroxylated graphene oxide (JHGO-1 and JHGO-2) were prepared by the high internal phase emulsion method. JHGO nanosheets were well dispersed in low salinity water, and their zeta potential was lower than −30 mV. Compared with JHGO-1, JHGO-2 has more excellent interfacial properties , remarkably reducing 73% of the oil-water interfacial tension and improving the interfacial viscoelastic modulus and shear viscosity. Furthermore, JHGO can form bubble film, interfacial film, and climbing film at the oil/water interface due to its amphiphilic nature, which endows it with intelligent oil-finding properties. JHGO nanofluid alters the rock surface into strong water-wet and changes the capillary force into the driving force of oil flooding. JHGO nanofluid can also rapidly peel crude oil from rock surfaces by reducing adhesion work and forming disjoining pressure . These excellent interfacial properties help low-salinity nanofluid to have a 15.4% enhanced oil recovery at the ultra-low concentration (50 mg/L). This smart fluid flooding lays the foundation for efficient oilfield development.

Facile Synthesis of Novel Magnetic Janus Graphene Oxide for Efficient and Recyclable Demulsification of Crude Oil-in-Water Emulsion

Yingbiao Xu,Li Cheng,Yefei Wang,Han Jia

Nanoparticles have been widely applied to treat emulsion-containing wastewater in the form of chemical demulsifiers, such as SiO2, Fe3O4, and graphene oxide (GO). Owing to their asymmetric structures and selective adsorption, Janus nanoparticles show greater application potential in many fields. In the present work, the novel magnetic Janus graphene oxide (MJGO) nanoparticle was successfully prepared by grafting magnetic Fe3O4to the surface of the JGO, and its demulsifying ability to treat a crude oil-in-water emulsion was evaluated. The MJGO structure and its magnetic intensity were verified by Fourier-transform infrared spectra (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and magnetization saturation (MS) tests. Compared with GO and JGO, MJGO displayed the superior efficiency (>96%) to demulsify the crude oil-in-water emulsion, which can be attributed to the reduced electrostatic repulsion between MJGO and the emulsion droplets. Furthermore, the effects of pH and temperature on the demulsification performance of MJGO were also studied. Lastly, the recyclability of MJGO largely reduced the cost of demulsifiers in separating crude oil and water. The current research presents an efficient and recyclable demulsifier, which provides a new perspective for the structural design of nanomaterials and their application in the field of demulsification.

Synergistic effects of Janus graphene oxide and surfactants on the heavy oil/water interfacial tension and their application to enhance heavy oil recovery

Han Jia,Pan Huang,Yugui Han,Qiuxia Wang,Xin Wei,Wenjian Huang,Jiajun Dai,Jinyong Song,Hui Yan,Dexin Liu

The interfacial activities of graphene oxide (GO) and two kinds of Janus graphene oxide (JGO150 and JGO400), i.e., GO with one side being modified by two different amount of dodecylamine, were evaluated in various oil/water systems. Based on the results of IFT measurement, JGO showed the greater interfacial activity than original GO, especially for JGO400 which greatly reduced the heavy oil/water IFT to 0.12 mN/m. Molecular dynamic simulations were employed to illustrate the interfacial interaction between GO/JGO and oil molecules. Furthermore, the interaction between three kinds of nano-sheet materials and three types of surfactants, including dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and Triton X-100 (TX-100), were systematically investigated in the heavy oil/water system. The JGO400/DTAB system exhibited excellent synergistic effects to dramatically decrease the heavy oil/water IFT to 8 × 10 −3  mN/m, which was responsible for its remarkable ability to improve heavy oil recovery (19.5%) in core flooding tests.

Effects of Modification Degrees on the Colloidal Stability of Amphiphilic Janus Graphene Oxide in Aqueous Solution with and without Electrolytes

Pan Huang,Han Jia,Tingyi Wang,Yingbiao Xu,Lingyu Zhang,Xin Wei,Haidong Jia,Shijie Wen,Kaihe Lv,Dexin Liu

Colloidal stability of modified graphene oxide (GO) is fundamental for its practical applications. Meanwhile, most of the investigations mainly focused on the nanosheets modified by a certain amount of modifiers and neglected the effects of the modification degree, which could vary the physical and chemical properties of modified GO and significantly affect its stability in solution. To the best of our knowledge, this study initially investigated the impact of modification degrees on the colloidal stability of graphene-based amphiphilic Janus nanosheets (JGO) via both experimental and theoretical approaches. The prepared JGO, asymmetrically grafted by dodecylamine, exhibited a direct relation between the modification degree and nanosheet thickness, refractive index, electrostatic properties, hydrophobicity, and the ultimate colloidal stability. In addition, the ionic strength imposed distinctive influences on the aggregation behavior of JGO. Based on the comparison between experimental results and theoretical calculation, it was revealed that the JGO should be modeled as two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets in pure water and be treated as 3D spherical particles in electrolyte solutions for the prediction with the extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek theory.

Janus graphene oxide nanosheets prepared via Pickering emulsion template

Hao Wu,Wenyuan Yi,Zhe Chen,Haitao Wang,Qiangguo Du

Janus graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets functionalized by amino-containing chemicals were prepared via Pickering emulsion template. A wax-in-water Pickering emulsion was used to mask one side of GO nanosheets in order to achieve asymmetric chemical functionalization. Janus particles were obtained by removing the oil phase. The successful reaction of epoxy groups on the surface of GO with amino-containing chemicals was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The asymmetric surface structure of Janus GO nanosheets was detected by atomic force microscope (AFM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The efficient stabilization of an oil-in-water Pickering emulsion by Janus GO was proved. Polymer microspheres fabricated by using Janus GO as Pickering stabilizer had a more hydrophilic surface compared with those stabilized by symmetrically modified GO.
