Antibacterial polyurethane/polyacrylonitrile Janus nanofibrous membrane with unidirectional moisture transfer property for improving the wearing comfort

Pengfei Tan,Min Wang,Wuhou Fan,Yiming Xu,Yuanzhang Jiang,Pengfei Wu,Lin Tan

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is of great importance to protect people from respiratory pollutants such as fine dust and pathogenic microorganisms. Besides, the accumulated water vapor caused by breathing during long-term wearing PPE would bring discomfort to people. Herein, an antimicrobial polyurethane/polyacrylonitrile (PU/PAN) Janus membrane with unidirectional moisture management properties was fabricated using layer-by-layer electrospinning technology. As expected, unidirectional moisture transfer was achieved within 28 s, and the excellent filter efficiency of 99.20% against PM 1.0 and the bacteria retention capacity of 100% effectively purify the flowing air. In addition, the secondary infection can be avoided since the antimicrobial quaternary ammonium unit was chemically anchored to the Janus membrane. Therefore, the present PU/PAN Janus electrospun membrane as the part of PPE is supposed to improve the wearing comfort and meet the requirements of preventing contamination by bacteria, aerosols and other pollutants in air.

In-situ growth of robust and superhydrophilic nano-skin on electrospun Janus nanofibrous membrane for oil/water emulsions separation

Bingbing Cheng,Song Yan,Yushan Li,Long Zheng,Xianjie Wen,Yeqiang Tan,Xianze Yin

It is difficult for composite fibrous membranes to achieve up to 99.5% separation efficiency for oil/water emulsions under cycling separation. Herein, a simple method is developed to in-situ grow surperhydrophilic nanocoating on a single electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) fiber surface for fabricating asymmetric wettable Janus PVDF fibrous membranes. Particularly, polysaccharide fluids with zwitterionic polymer chains are generated from the nanofiber subsurface in an inside-out way during the electrospinning process, forming the robust superhydrophilic nanocoating (<5°) under a synergistic effect of both the electric field force and self-migration feature of N-carboxymethyl chitosan fluids (CMCfs). Benefiting from opposite wettability of the PVDF Janus membrane, the results show that the as-prepared Janus membranes with asymmetrical wettability exhibit excellent separation efficiency (S/E) (>99.5 %), a high flux (up to 4325 L m − 2 h −1 bar −1 ), antibacterial activity (>99%) and antifoul properties. Moreover, the obtained Janus membranes own surprising flux cycling stability and retained 99.5% separation efficiency after 12 cycles without any treatment, indicating that the multi-arm polysaccharide fluids acted as the water channel in such membrane and accelerated the flow of water molecules. The Janus PVDF composite membranes have potential applications for oily wastewater treatment and water purification in the future.

An electrochemical sensor based on MXene-Au nanocomposites/Janus fiber membrane for sweat glucose detection via rapid unidirectional moisture transport collection

Qiujin Li,Jianing Ren,Kexin Feng,Jixian Gong,Zheng Li,Xiuming Liu,Jianfei Zhang

Wearable glucose sensors have received widespread attention for their ability to provide real-time and continuous physiological information through non-invasive detection of glucose in sweat, which is significant to wellness assessment and management. However, there are still challenges of glucose catalysis and sweat sampling in developing efficient wearable glucose sensors. Here, we report a flexible wearable electrochemical sensor based on a Janus nanofiber membrane for efficient sweat collection and glucose detection. Leveraging the high reducing capability of MXene, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were synthesized in situ, and then functionalize the screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) substrate. The synergistic effect derived from the high specific surface area and superior redox activity of MXene-Au composites, as well as the efficient immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOx) make the sensor with high sensitivity and accuracy. A polyurethane/polyvinyl alcohol (PU/PVA) Janus fiber membrane, fabricated via electrospinning, served as a rapid unidirectional water transport component for active sweat collection. This electrochemical sensor exhibits a wide linear range encompassing the typical physiological glucose concentration profile in sweat, with a sensitivity of 0.33 μA μM −1  cm −2 and a detection limit of 13.0 μM. The sensor demonstrates excellent selectivity for glucose with good reproducibility and stability, suggesting significant promise for providing a new strategy towards non-invasive glucose monitoring.

Synergistic Functions of the Janus Fibrous Membrane for Enhanced Bone Repair

Tingting Zhang,Jinghong Yang,Yu Lu,Yanlan Wang,Xiaoshuang Wang,Yijiao Li,Weichang Li,Yan Wang

The treatment of bone defects presents significant challenges in clinical practice. Guided bone regeneration (GBR) strategies offer a new approach, but existing commercial GBR membranes still lack optimal barrier and osteogenic functions. This study presents the design of a Janus fibrous membrane using classic amphiphilic block copolymers and gelatin methacryloyl containing unsaturated double bonds through a gradient electrospinning process. Specifically, by controlling electrospinning parameters, self-assembly of block copolymers, and secondary photo-cross-linking, differential composition, topological structure, and properties between different layers were achieved, thereby realizing synergistic physiological barrier and repair-promoting functions. By leveraging the Janus effect, it effectively blocks the adverse effects of soft tissue cell ingrowth on bone repair while guiding osteogenic cell proliferation and differentiation. Furthermore, the membrane’s functionality is optimized by incorporating the antimicrobial component ε-poly-l-lysine and the osteogenic component niobium. In vivo studies demonstrate the membrane’s excellent biocompatibility, antibacterial activity, and remarkable bone regeneration potential in both normal and infectious bone defect animal models. The developed Janus fibrous membrane serves as a versatile platform for biomedical applications, offering the vast potential to effectively address the limitations of current GBR membranes in clinical bone defect treatment.
