Smart fibers capable of integrating the multifunctionality of actuation and self-sensation into a single proprioceptive device have significant applications in soft robots and biomedicine. Especially, the achievement of self-sensing the movement patterns of different actuating segments in one fiber is still a great challenge. Herein, in this study, a fiber with the controllable Janus architecture is successfully proposed via an artful centrifugation-driven hierarchical gradient self-assembly strategy, which couples two functional components of piezoresistive carbon nanotubes and magnetic NdFeB nanoparticles into the upper and lower layers of this flexible fibrous framework with the porous sponge structure partially, respectively. As predicted, the final product exhibits the as-anticipated bionic proprioceptive behaviors of programmable actuating deformation and highly selective response to bending, stretching, and pressure with high washable stability and mechanical performances. More importantly, assisted by the different three-dimensional printing molds, the superlong Janus fibers with various controllable lengths of the reversed but sequential multistage segments can be fabricated, offering the hybrid magnetic actuation and proprioceptive sensation existing at arbitrary nodes. Therefore, several kinds of soft organism-inspired Janus fiber-derived soft robots with the arbitrarily controlled segmental characters were assembled as the proof-of-concept, which can not only realize a snake or inchworm-inspired successive contracting-stretching deformation and a sperm-inspired self-rotating crawling motion but also self-sense the signals of each segment themselves in real time and then be used to navigate an object to target position in a liquid-filled confined tube. It is believed that this work promotes the further development of proprioceptive soft robots.

In nature, the combination of composition, structure, and shape determines the matter's functional performance to a large extent. Inspired by which, two electrospun Janus nanofiber formulations were created using side-by-side electrospinning in this work. Tamoxifen citrate (TAM) was used as a model drug and ethyl cellulose (EC) and polyvinylpyrrolidone K60 (PVP) as the polymer carrier matrices. The fibers have linear cylindrical morphologies and distinct Janus structures by scanning electron microscopy. One side of the fibers took a round shape, while the other was crescent-shaped. The drug was present in both polymer matrices in the form of amorphous solid dispersions, owing to strong intermolecular interactions between drug and polymer. In vitro dissolution tests demonstrated that both sets of fibers could provide biphasic drug release due to the difference in solubility of PVP and EC. The different shape of TAM-EC and TAM-PVP side of the Janus structure resulted in a considerable variation in the drug release profiles. The Janus structure with crescent TAM-PVP side and round TAM-EC side gave a more rapid burst release in the first phase of release, and slower sustained release in the second phase. This work thus reports a new strategy for systematically developing advanced functional nanomaterials based on both shape- and structure-performance relationships.

Traditional cellulose fabric with high hydrophilic distinction realizes personal thermal management via perspiration-induced cooling for the human body. However, such behavior is restricted in high-humidity environments, where sweat/water transports from a high-humidity environment to the human body by hydrophilic cellulose fabric. Herein, we developed an environmentally friendly, low-cost, large-scale Janus cellulose fabric via one-side hydrophobic modification of hydrophilic cellulose. Our Janus cellulose fabric comprises hydrophobic cellulose side (water contact angle of 151°) and hydrophilic cellulose side (water contact angle of 19°). Such distinction endows Janus cellulose fabric with unidirectional water-transport capability, where water molecules are inclined to transport, diffuse and evaporate on the hydrophilic cellulose (diffusion area of 50 μl water is around 0.8 cm 2 ) rather than the hydrophobic cellulose (less and even negligible diffusion area), correspondingly spontaneously leading to a 3–4 ℃ temperature drop of the human body when covering Janus cellulose fabric than pristine cellulose fabric. Janus cellulose fabric paves the way toward green, cost-effective, and cooling fabric in our sustainable society.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is of great importance to protect people from respiratory pollutants such as fine dust and pathogenic microorganisms. Besides, the accumulated water vapor caused by breathing during long-term wearing PPE would bring discomfort to people. Herein, an antimicrobial polyurethane/polyacrylonitrile (PU/PAN) Janus membrane with unidirectional moisture management properties was fabricated using layer-by-layer electrospinning technology. As expected, unidirectional moisture transfer was achieved within 28 s, and the excellent filter efficiency of 99.20% against PM 1.0 and the bacteria retention capacity of 100% effectively purify the flowing air. In addition, the secondary infection can be avoided since the antimicrobial quaternary ammonium unit was chemically anchored to the Janus membrane. Therefore, the present PU/PAN Janus electrospun membrane as the part of PPE is supposed to improve the wearing comfort and meet the requirements of preventing contamination by bacteria, aerosols and other pollutants in air.

Wearable strain sensors have huge potential for applications in healthcare, human–machine interfacing, and augmented reality systems. However, the nonlinear response of the resistance signal to strain has caused considerable difficulty and complexity in data processing and signal transformation, thus impeding their practical applications severely. Herein, we propose a simple way to achieve linear and reproducible resistive signals responding to strain in a relatively wide strain range for flexible strain sensors, which is achieved via the fabrication of Janus and heteromodulus elastomeric fiber mats with micropatterns using microimprinting second processing technology. In detail, both isotropic and anisotropic fiber mats can turn into Janus fiber mats with periodical and heteromodulus micropatterns via controlling the fiber fusion and the diffusion of local macromolecular chains of thermoplastic elastomers. The Janus heterogeneous microstructure allows for stress redistribution upon stretching, thus leading to lower strain hysteresis and improved linearity of resistive signal. Moreover, tunable sensing performance can be achieved by tailoring the size of the micropatterns on the fiber mat surface and the fiber anisotropy. The Janus mat strain sensors with high signal linearity and good reproducibility have a very low strain detection limit, enabling potential applications in human–machine interfacing and intelligent control fields if combined with a wireless communication module.

A family of medicated Janus fibers that provides highly tunable biphasic drug release was fabricated using a side-by-side electrospinning process employing a Teflon-coated parallel spinneret. The coated spinneret facilitated the formation of a Janus Taylor cone and in turn high quality integrated Janus structures, which could not be reliably obtained without the Teflon coating. The fibers prepared had one side consisting of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) K60 and ketoprofen, and the other of ethyl cellulose (EC) and ketoprofen. To modulate and tune drug release, PVP K10 was doped into the EC side in some cases. The fibers were linear and had flat morphologies with an indent in the center. They provide biphasic drug release, with the PVP K60 side dissolving very rapidly to deliver a loading dose of the active ingredient, and the EC side resulting in sustained release of the remaining ketoprofen. The addition of PVP K10 to the EC side was able to accelerate the second stage of release; variation in the dopant amount permitted the release rate and extent this phase to be precisely tuned. These results offer the potential to rationally design systems with highly controllable drug release profiles, which can complement natural biological rhythms and deliver maximum therapeutic effects.

It is difficult for composite fibrous membranes to achieve up to 99.5% separation efficiency for oil/water emulsions under cycling separation. Herein, a simple method is developed to in-situ grow surperhydrophilic nanocoating on a single electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) fiber surface for fabricating asymmetric wettable Janus PVDF fibrous membranes. Particularly, polysaccharide fluids with zwitterionic polymer chains are generated from the nanofiber subsurface in an inside-out way during the electrospinning process, forming the robust superhydrophilic nanocoating (<5°) under a synergistic effect of both the electric field force and self-migration feature of N-carboxymethyl chitosan fluids (CMCfs). Benefiting from opposite wettability of the PVDF Janus membrane, the results show that the as-prepared Janus membranes with asymmetrical wettability exhibit excellent separation efficiency (S/E) (>99.5 %), a high flux (up to 4325 L m − 2 h −1 bar −1 ), antibacterial activity (>99%) and antifoul properties. Moreover, the obtained Janus membranes own surprising flux cycling stability and retained 99.5% separation efficiency after 12 cycles without any treatment, indicating that the multi-arm polysaccharide fluids acted as the water channel in such membrane and accelerated the flow of water molecules. The Janus PVDF composite membranes have potential applications for oily wastewater treatment and water purification in the future.

The effective integration of multiple thermal functions into one material is highly attractive in personal thermal management, taking the complex application environment into consideration. Herein, a multifunctional Janus cellulosic composite encompassing superior electrical heating, energy storage, thermal insulation, and infrared camouflage performance was firstly developed by integrating Janus cellulose nanofibers (CNF) aerogel , polypyrrole (PPy), and polyethylene glycol (PEG). In practice, the active heating-thermal regulation layer (PPy@CNF philic -PEG) of multifunctional Janus cellulosic composite is faced inward to provide heating on-demand through the joint action of the electrically conductive PPy and thermally regulative PEG. The outward-facing hydrophobic aerogel layer (CNF phobic ) serves as the thermal insulator , which simultaneously enables infrared camouflage by reducing heat loss to the environment via infrared radiation. This work presents an effective and facile strategy toward multifunctional Janus materials for efficient personal thermal management, showing great promise for potential applications, such as thermal comfort, infrared camouflage, and security protection.

The most important property of a wound dressing is its anti-bacteria performance. Although electrospun nanofibers are frequently demonstrated to be potent candidates as wound dressings, no Janus fibers have been explored for this popular application. In this study, a Janus wound dressing composed of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and ethyl cellulose (EC) polymer matrices was prepared via a side-by-side electrospinning process, in which ciprofloxacin (CIP) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were loaded in the two sides. A homemade acentric spinneret was exploited to maintain a continuous preparation process. Scanning and transmission electron microscope results demonstrated that the Janus fibers had a uniform and cylindrical morphology with a clear Janus structure, and AgNPs distributed in one side. X-ray diffraction patterns suggested that drug was present in the fibers in an amorphous state owing to rapid drying and its good compatibility with PVP, which was verified by infrared spectroscopy. In vitro tests showed that over 90% of CIP was released within the first 30 min, ensuring a strong antibacterial effect at the initial stages of wound healing. The Janus fibers were demonstrated to have good bactericidal activity against the growth of both Gram-positive S. aureus and Gram-negative E. coli . The PVP-CIP/EC-AgNPs Janus fibers could thus be a promising candidate for effective wound dressings. This work paves a new way for creating Janus structure-based advanced functional nanomaterials.

Membranes are the dominant material for seawater desalination and clean-water harvesting, which are commonly composed of synthetic polymers, showing low hydrophilicity and environmental hazard. Herein, we developed a low-cost, intrinsically green, superhigh-water flux Janus cellulose membrane (CEM) via a facile cellulase etching strategy. Coating cellulase on the single surface of cellulose membrane (such as top surface), triggers effective etching on its top section rather than bottom section, which architects an asymmetric-pore structure of the Janus CEM including porous top-and dense bottom-layer. Such distinction endows the Janus CEM with an unprecedented high-water flux of 135.75 LMH and a low salt-water ratio of 0.29 g·L −1 for 1 M NaCl solution, which is 17-time higher and 62-time lower than that of the pristine CEM. Our Janus CEM enables a promising participant for the advanced membrane materials toward versatile separation engineering .

Diabetic wounds, characterized by excessive exudate accumulation and dysregulated inflammation, pose a global healthcare challenge due to their persistent non-healing nature. Traditional therapies often fail to simultaneously address three critical healing requirements: precise exudate management, coordinated inflammation-immune modulation, and pro-regenerative microenvironment establishment. Here, we present an innovative self-pumping Janus fibrous dressing integrating curcumin-loaded polycaprolactone nanofibers with cotton gauze. Its gradient architecture enables spontaneous exudate drainage and dynamic microenvironment modulation, establishing an optimal milieu for accelerated wound healing. Comprehensive in vitro investigations validate the dressing’s multifunctionality, including sensitive colorimetric pH response, antibacterial properties (>99 % inhibition against S. aureus ), and antioxidant capabilities (>90 % DPPH radical scavenging). In vivo studies in a diabetic mice model demonstrate the dressing’s superior wound healing efficacy, with ∼47 % reduction in wound edge maceration, mitigated inflammatory responses, and enhanced angiogenesis compared to commercial cotton dressings. This novel approach provides a promising foundation for the development of advanced wound dressings tailored for the management and healing of chronic wounds.

Recent explorations have shown potential drug delivery applications of random and aligned fibrous dosage forms (e.g. patches, dressings, films and inserts). In this study, novel controlled delivery dosage forms, comprising Janus fibers, are designed and fabricated using electrohydrodynamic (EHD) engineering. Model probe and active compound release is shown from dissimilar polymer systems (non-soluble and soluble in nature) which constitute towards Janus systems. Micron scaled aligned Janus fibers comprising polycaprolactone (PCL) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) were engineered to host rhodamine B and acriflavine , respectively. The impact of various operating parameters (e.g. flow rate, collector speed, working distance and applied voltage) on resulting mean fiber diameter and shape were optimized. Tensile strain decreased from 116.5 ± 10.2% to 81.8 ± 9.5% upon the inclusion of the model compounds, while both PCL/PVP and PCL/PVP/dyes samples exhibited similar tensile strength (∼0.65 MPa). FTIR analyses demonstrates PCL/PVP blend behavior and successful incorporation of rhodamine B and acriflavine. Acriflavine release from PCL fibers spanned over a 4-day period, and release of rhodamine B from PVP fibers was just over 6 h. The results indicate the EHD direct-jetting technique enables the precise construction of drug loaded and aligned fibers in a single-step with minimal excipient usage for potential customized drug delivery.
