Interfacial Synthesis of Highly Stable CsPbX3/Oxide Janus Nanoparticles

Huicheng Hu,Linzhong Wu,Yeshu Tan,Qixuan Zhong,Min Chen,Yinghua Qiu,Di Yang,Baoquan Sun,Qiao Zhang,Yadong Yin

The poor stability of CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) nanocrystals (NCs) has severely impeded their practical applications. Although there are some successful examples on encapsulating multiple CsPbX3 NCs into an oxide or polymer matrix, it has remained a serious challenge for the surface modification/encapsulation using oxides or polymers at a single particle level. In this work, monodisperse CsPbX3/SiO2 and CsPbBr3/Ta2O5 Janus nanoparticles were successfully prepared by combining a water-triggered transformation process and a sol–gel method. The CsPbBr3/SiO2 NCs exhibited a photoluminescence quantum yield of 80% and a lifetime of 19.8 ns. The product showed dramatically improved stability against destruction by air, water, and light irradiation. Upon continuous irradiation by intense UV light for 10 h, a film of the CsPbBr3/SiO2 Janus NCs showed only a slight drop (2%) in the PL intensity, while a control sample of unmodified CsPbBr3 NCs displayed a 35% drop. We further highlighted the advantageous features of the CsPbBr3/SiO2 NCs in practical applications by using them as the green light source for the fabrication of a prototype white light emitting diode, and demonstrated a wide color gamut covering up to 138% of the National Television System Committee standard. This work not only provides a novel approach for the surface modification of individual CsPbX3 NCs but also helps to address the challenging stability issue; therefore, it has an important implication toward their practical applications.

Construction of small-sized superparamagnetic Janus nanoparticles and their application in cancer combined chemotherapy and magnetic hyperthermia

Liqin Xie,Wanwan Jin,Xirui Zuo,Shenglu Ji,Wenbin Nan,Hongli Chen,Songtai Gao,Qiqing Zhang

Novel Janus nanoparticles (J-NPs) are developed by using single iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles as the core and hydrophobic/hydrophilic polymeric brushes as the cloak. Because of the superparamagnetism and asymmetric functionality of J-NPs, they are used as drug carriers and therapeutic agents for cancer chemotherapy and magnetic hyperthermia with a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) guide. The asymmetric functionality is constituted of hydrophobic polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) brushes and hydrophilic polyacrylic acid (PAA) brushes, which are ‘grafting to’ or ‘grafting from’ Fe3O4 nanoparticles via activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization. The terminal chains of PMMA and PAA brushes are coordinated with Fe3O4 nanoparticles, so PMMA/Fe3O4/PAA J-NPs possess structural stability in solvents. Because of the brush-structure, PMMA/Fe3O4/PAA J-NPs show high encapsulation efficiency (89.75 ± 2.35%) and loading capacity (8.95 ± 0.26%). Under the alternating magnetic field (AMF), drug-loaded J-NPs achieve the highest cell proliferation–inhibition ratio in the cell proliferation test in vitro and the tumor growth inhibition test in vivo compared to single chemotherapy or magnetic hyperthermia. Meanwhile, J-NPs show good T2 imaging.

Design and synthesis of temperature-responsive Janus nanoparticles with high salt tolerant for enhanced heavy oil recovery

Haotian Gao,Jianwen Hu,Mingshuo Chi,Junjie Fan,Tianhao Zhang,Wenqing Xie,Ekemini Ituen,Shuangqing Sun,Chunling Li,Songqing Hu

Enhancing the recovery efficiency of heavy oil reservoirs remains one of the foremost challenges confronting the petroleum industry. Nanoparticles have garnered considerable attention as potential oil displacement agents, drawing numerous researchers to the field. In this study, temperature-responsive SiO 2 Janus nanoparticles (JNs) were successfully prepared through the Pickering emulsion template method and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) reactions. Experiments on the interfacial tension (IFT) of oil-water systems indicate that JNs exhibit good dynamic interfacial activity. Furthermore, the JNs exhibit remarkable emulsification capabilities for heavy oil, facilitating the formation of stable emulsions. Notably, the modified nanoparticles exhibit a degree of salt resistance, even up to a mineralization of 1.55 × 10 4  mg/L. Additionally, their temperature-responsive properties enable their utilization for high-temperature emulsification and low-temperature demulsification, making them well-suited for oilfield field operations. To visualize and simulate the underground oil displacement process, a microscopic displacement visualization experimental apparatus was employed. Notably, the addition of just 0.03 wt% of Janus nanoparticles resulted in a significant enhancement of the recovery rate by 16.49%. The research findings suggest that the JNs developed in this study exhibit promising application prospects and commercial value in terms of enhancing oil recovery efficiency.

Kunpeng Hou,Hairong Wu,Guorui Xu,Genglin Li,Tianfang Luan,Jiawei Chang,Tong Cheng,Zhaojie Song,Jirui Hou

Aiming to address the issues of limited suitability of conventional chemical oil displacement materials for formation conditions and the serious emulsification of oil and water in the produced liquid, the innovative nano oil-displacing system with CO 2 -responsive behavior has been developed. This system integrates oil displacement and emulsion breaking. The efficacy of the CO 2 -response system in creating stable emulsions with a high capacity to decrease interfacial tension has been demonstrated. The interfacial responsive behavior of all active components, including Janus nanoparticles, sodium oleate, gums, and asphaltenes, in the emulsion system was analyzed in terms of interfacial rheology and adsorption. Additionally, the prepared system demonstrated a rapid response to CO 2 , effectively breaking the emulsion within 5 min. Furthermore, the oil recovery enhancing mechanism of the CO 2 -response system was investigated using a microscopic visualization model. The system was proved to be efficient in initiating the residual oil within pore channels. Considering the combined effectiveness of the CO 2 -response system in terms of efficient oil displacement and rapid response, it offers valuable insights for advancing the chemical flooding technology of in enhanced oil recovery.

Dual drug delivery and sequential release by amphiphilic Janus nanoparticles for liver cancer theranostics

Lingyu Zhang,Manjie Zhang,Li Zhou,Qinghe Han,Xiangjun Chen,Shengnan Li,Lu Li,Zhongmin Su,Chungang Wang

Co-delivery of two drugs with diverse physicochemical properties and specific administration order for cancer theranostics are vitally important for drug resistance conquering and side effects reducing. Consequently, we explored a unique amphiphilic PCL-AuNC/Fe(OH) 3 -PAA Janus nanoparticle (JNP) to simultaneously preserve the hydrophilic drug (doxorubicin) and hydrophobic drug (docetaxel) in their distinct domains. Owing to their extraordinary heterostructure and independent pH and NIR sensitive properties, the optional sequential drug release by a single inorganic JNP was realized for the first time, and the results presented the synchronous release of two drugs had 5% better therapeutic effect. In addition, the excellent computed X-ray tomography/magnetic resonance (CT/MR) imaging capabilities from AuNC and Fe(OH) 3 suggested our JNPs could effectively guide the cancer therapy. Furthermore, the mice treated with dual drug loaded PCL-AuNC/Fe(OH) 3 -PAA JNPs under near infrared (NIR) laser irradiation showed better tumor inhibition than solo drug, cocktail and dual drug treated groups, indicating the effectivity and significance of combined cancer therapy.

Multi-heterostructure composites of Fe3O4 coated Janus nanoparticles and MWCNTs with high microwave absorption

Hengqian Jin,Shufei Wei,Xinping Zhang,Huarong Nie,Aihua He

Microwave-absorbing materials with heterostructure represent a major challenge and opportunity in enabling strong microwave absorption over a wide bandwidth. Here, novel hydrophilic multi-heterostructure composites (Mag@J/MWCNT) were fabricated by combining nanostructured Fe 3 O 4 covered snowman-like Janus nanoparticles (Mag@J) with MWCNTs for enhanced microwave absorption. The good hydrophilicity and low reflection loss (RL) demonstrated the potential application of Mag@J as an effective microwave absorbent with environmentally friendly processibility. Further, the multi-heterostructure composites constructed by Mag@J (with 77.73 wt% Fe 3 O 4 ) and MWCNTs exhibited strong absorption intensity (RL = −38.98 dB), wide bandwidth (6.04–8.23 GHz), and low thickness (3.5 mm). The excellent microwave absorption properties were attributed to the strong dielectric loss, magnetic loss, and good impedance matching of different components in multi-heterostructure composites, as well as multiple reflection absorption of microwave in the hollow sphere of Janus particle. Therefore, this work provides important inspiration for multi-heterostructure composites to achieve potential applications as electromagnetic wave absorbing materials.

Reversible and Precise Self-Assembly of Janus Metal-Organosilica Nanoparticles through a Linker-Free Approach

Huicheng Hu,Fei Ji,Yong Xu,Jiaqi Yu,Qipeng Liu,Lei Chen,Qian Chen,Peng Wen,Yeshayahu Lifshitz,Yan Wang,Qiao Zhang,Shuit-Tong Lee

Reversible self-assembly of nanoparticles into ordered structures is essential for both fundamental study and practical applications. Although extensive work has been conducted, the demand for simple, cheap, reversible, and versatile ordering methods is still a central issue in current nanoscience and nanotechnology. Here we report a reversible and precise self-assembly of nanoparticles through a linker-free and fast approach by manipulating the interparticle forces, e.g., van der Waals (VDW) force and electrostatic force. Because VDW force is nondirectional, an oriented interaction is achieved to induce the directional binding of nanoparticles utilizing the Janus nanostructure. An effective sol–gel approach has been developed to synthesize metal-organosilica Janus nanoparticles. Dimers and trimers can be obtained by tuning the steric hindrance. After assembly, “hot-spots” can be generated between adjacent nanoparticles, and dramatic enhancement has been observed in surface-enhanced Raman scattering. The present strategy overcomes several limitations of existing approaches and allows the controlled assembly of small particles into various structures.

Fabrication of Ag-armed iron oxide magnetic Janus nanoparticles for enhanced elimination of robust biofilm under magnetic field

Wang Xi,Wu Juan,Sun Haibin,Lu Bingyan,Huang Jingjing,Liu Qiaoling,Li Tingting

Biofilms pose a significant challenge to public health, fostering persistent infections that are notoriously difficult to eradicate. Their resilience stems partly from the inadequate penetration of conventional antibacterial agents into these structured microbial communities. To address this issue, we have developed a novel magnetite iron oxide Janus nanoparticles (JNPs), harnessing the magnetic field assistance for targeted biofilm elimination. In which, natural tannic acid (TA) and chitosan (CS) were coated on IONPs for improved antibacterial property and biocompatibility. Subsequently, the surfaces were functionalized with epoxy chloropropane and butanediamine, creating anchor points for the deposition of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Subsequently, AgNPs were embedded via an in situ reduction process, utilizing polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) to precisely control the morphology of the Ag-armed magnetite JNPs. Remarkably, IONPs@BCS/Ag exhibited dual-responsive release characteristics, sensitively adjusting their Ag + release in response to both oxygen levels and pH variations within the biofilms microenvironment. This system leveraged both stimulus-responsiveness and magnetic guidance to deliver exceptional antimicrobial performance against both planktonic bacteria and established biofilms. Critically, the superparamagnetic nature of IONPs@BCS/Ag enabled enhanced penetration into biofilms under an external magnetic field, facilitating the efficient delivery of AgNPs. Furthermore, the sustained release of Ag + triggered by low pH and oxygen levels within the biofilm triggered the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which not only accelerated the decomposition of the biofilm matrix but also disrupted the integrity of microbial communities. In summary, the IONPs@BCS/Ag magnetite JNPs, augmented by an external magnetic field, demonstrated enhanced anti-biofilm capabilities, offering immense potential as a potent weapon against biofilm-associated infections. Self-assembled Ag2S–Au Janus nanoparticles for targeted photo-responsive thermal ablation of cancer cells and bacteria

Binghua Long,Jingjing Zhang,Hairui Deng,Xu Sun,Yuguang Lu,Xiaoqing Lin,Abdul Wahab,Han Zhang,Muhammad Zubair Iqbal,Xiangdong Kong

Janus nanoparticles (JNPs) represent one of the most complex nanoparticles, and achieving precise control over their synthesis remains a significant challenge. Here, we explore gold–silver sulfide (Au–Ag2S) JNPs for targeted anticancer and antibacterial therapies. Au–Ag2S JNPs were synthesized and characterized using transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), x-ray powder diffraction, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirming their distinct dimeric structure with Au and Ag2S components. Surface modification with 1,2-Distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-Polyethylene Glycol (DSPE-PEG) and folic acid enhanced stability and enabled targeted delivery to cancer cells, resulting in AADF JNPs. AADF JNPs exhibited strong near-infrared (NIR-II) emission, ideal for in vivo imaging and photothermal therapy. In vitro studies demonstrated high biocompatibility and enhanced cellular uptake in 4T1 cancer cells compared to non-targeted JNPs. Upon laser irradiation, AADF JNPs effectively reduced 4T1 cell viability, demonstrating their phototherapeutic effect. Furthermore, AADF JNPs exhibited potent antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus under NIR irradiation, it achieved 78% tumor cell killing and 99% bacterial eradication. These findings highlight the potential of AADF JNPs as a promising solution for targeted cancer and bacterial infection treatments.

Silica-based amphiphilic Janus nanofluid with improved interfacial properties for enhanced oil recovery

Hairong Wu,Kai Gao,Yao Lu,Ziyu Meng,Congbo Gou,Zhe Li,Meng Yang,Ming Qu,Tongjing Liu,Jirui Hou,Wanli Kang

Silica-based amphiphilic Janus nanoparticles were synthesized for application in the field of enhanced oil recovery. The organic hydrophobic chain was grafted onto the SiO 2 nanoparticles using a Pickering emulsion method. The chemical structure of the synthesized Janus nanoparticles was then characterized by TEM and FT-IR. Their interfacial properties were systematically investigated in terms of interfacial tension, contact angle and interfacial viscosity. The obtained results showed that the oil-water interfacial tension was reduced down to 2.28 mN/m when the concentration of the Janus nanoparticles is 0.05 wt%. Moreover, the Janus nanofluids could effectively alter the wettability of the rock from oil-wet to water-wet. The displacement experiments with low-permeability sandstone cores indicated that up to 15.74% increments of the oil recovery can be obtained by injecting 100 mg/L Janus nanofluids. Attributing to their hydrophilic-lipophilic balance properties, the Janus nanoparticles can quickly transport to the oil-water interface; consequently, a stable interfacial film which is beneficial to enhance oil recovery will form at the oil-water interface. Thus, the synthesized Janus nanoparticles could serve as an ideal candidate for enhanced oil recovery.

A SERS “on–off” sensor for Hg2+ and fumonisin B1 determination in grains based on Au-Janus Ag NPs modified by carbon dots

Wang Yutong,Liang Xiao,Yang Yaling

Se-WCDs-Au-Janus Ag NPs with weak oxidase activity were synthesized using Se-W carbon dots (Se-WCDs) as stabilizers and reducing agents. These Janus nanoparticles (Janus NPs) effectively catalyze the reduction of mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) to metallic mercury (Hg 0 ), generating Au–Ag-Hg mercury alloys (Au–Ag@HgNPs). The aggregated Au–Ag@HgNPs on the nanoparticles improve the SERS activity of Se-WCDs-Au-Janus Ag NPs through a synergistic effect of electromagnetic enhancement and chemical enhancement. Interestingly, adding FB1 turns off the Raman signal by inhibiting the aggregation of Au–Ag@HgNPs. Based on these findings, a SERS “on–off” sensor utilizing the Se-WCDs-Au-Janus Ag NPs as the probe was successfully developed to determine fumonisin B1 (FB1) and Hg 2+ in grains. The detection limits were as low as 0.005 μg·L −1 for Hg 2+ and 0.006 μg·L −1 for FB1. Graphical abstract

High performance emulsifier magnetic Janus nanoparticle for stabilizing the water-in-crude oil Pickering emulsion—application to a new oil recovery method: Viscosity increased-emulsion flooding

Lei Yue,Ting Zuo,Hongxing Xu,Kongjie Wang,Yining Zhou,Boli Yang,Meiyao Gao,Gaihong Wang,Shanshan Li,Xiaohui Liu

When crude oil is in-situ emulsified in reservoir by the injected fluid to form water-in-crude oil emulsion the fluid with higher viscosity than that of the continuous phase is obtained in the displacing front, which results in the decrease of mobility ratio and the increase of sweep volume. This is a new method for enhancing oil recovery via increasing viscosity of crude oil in emulsion flooding. To achieve this result, the high-performance Janus nano-emulsifier (HMJP) has been obtained in this paper, which employs the low-cost, environmental-friendly, and recyclable magnetic nano-Fe3O4 to be the core. Then, the relationship between the emulsifying crude oil performance and the wettability of this Janus nanoparticle has been discovered and the related interfacial stabilization mechanism is discussed by interfacial dilatation rheology. Results show that the synthesized HMJPs have strong magnetic property and can be recyclable. For the given crude oil in this paper, when 0.04% of Q-16 (the carbon number used is equal to 16) is dispersing in 0.08% of LAD-30 surfactant fluid the water content of emulsion has been 90% and the emulsion viscosity is 10732.3mPa•s, which also reached excellent oil recovery. The emulsifying crude oil performance of HMJP is strongly associated with its wettability. The inborn interface-property of HMJP, surfactant, and the active components in crude oil all play a key role to decide the wettability of HMJP in preparing water in crude Pickering emulsion. The wettability of the modified HMJP is more neutral the emulsifying performance is stronger.
