Clean production of fluorine-free and colorful superhydrophobic surface coating has been highly demanded in many applications but still faces many major challenges. Herein, a one-step clean coating process has been developed to make robust fluorine-free superhydrophobic coating with outstanding color fastness and self-healing property. The coating system comprises cycloolefin copolymer polymer (COC), hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS), hydrophobic functionalized TiO 2 nanoparticulates and dyeing pigments. Janus cotton fabrics are prepared by applying the TiO 2 -HDTMS/PB/COC composite coating solution onto the facing side of the fabric by an electrospraying technique. The coated fabric side demonstrates superhydrophobicity showing water contact angle (WCA) of 167.3° ± 2.2° and sliding angle (SA) of 6.9° ± 0.5°, while the un-coated side still retains its original hydrophilic property. The coating shows excellent color fastness and strong bonding strength that can withstand many severe treatments with little affection on color and superhydrophobicity. The coating's original superhydrophobicity can be restored from chemical or physical damages. The developed coating system have also been applied to many other substrates (e.g. polyester, wool, mesh membrane, sponge, etc.). More importantly, the process has low energy consumption with almost no waste liquid produced during the coating process. This simple yet clean coating strategy meets the requirements of green and low energy dyeing, and will benefit the development of robust multifunctional coating .

Fabric multifunctionality offers resource savings and enhanced human comfort. This study innovatively integrates cooling, heating, and antimicrobial properties within a Janus fabric, surpassing previous research focused solely on cooling or heating. Different effects are achieved by applying distinct coatings to each side of the fabric. One graphene oxide (GO) coating exhibits exceptional light-to-heat conversion, absorbing and transforming light energy into heat, thereby elevating fabric temperature by 15.4 °C, 22.7 °C, and 43.7 °C under 0.2, 0.5, and 1 sun irradiation, respectively. Conversely, a hydrogel coating on one side absorbs water, facilitating heat dissipation through evaporation upon light exposure, reducing fabric temperature by 5.9 °C, 8.4 °C, and 7.1 °C in 0.2, 0.5, and 1 sun irradiation, respectively. Moreover, both sides of Janus fabric exhibit potent antimicrobial properties, ensuring fabric hygiene. This work presents a feasible solution to address crucial challenges in fabric thermal regulation, providing a smart approach for intelligent adjustment of body comfort in both summer and winter. By integrating heating and cooling capabilities along with antimicrobial properties, this study promotes sustainable development in textile techniques.

The old-fashioned yet effective trans-printing method was adopted to prepare Janus fabric in the study. Nonwoven cotton fabric was firstly immersed in tetrahydrofuran solution containing P(DMAEMA-co-TMSPMA), a polymer synthesized by copolymerization between N, N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propylmethacrylate (TMSPMA), followed by thermal treatment, thus endowing the fabric with the demulsification property. Next, one side of the above prepared fabric was overlapped and rolled with donor fabric containing PDMS-g-TMOS, a polymer synthesized by thiol/ene click reaction between multi-vinyl poly(dimethylsiloxane) (vinyl-PDMS) and 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMOS). The PDMS-g-TMOS polymer infiltrated into the fabric cured with P(DMAEMA-co-TMSPMA) to a certain depth, followed by thermal treatment. Thus, the resultant fabric had both the superhyrophilic side for oil coalescence and the superhyrophobic side for oil permeation. The Janus fabric structure was confirmed by metalloscope, unidirectional water transport property (UDWT), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). When the prepared fabric was used to separate model oil hexadecane (HD) from oil-in-water emulsion, the maximum separation speed was 134.5 kg h−1 m−2. The recovery rate of HD respectively reached 96.0% after 60 min and 99.9% after 150 min. The Janus fabric prepared by the trans-printing method is particularly suitable for industrial production and of great industrial value.

Porous materials with opposing superwettability toward oil and water have aroused widespread interest for their selective-wetting advantage in oil–water separation. The separation process, however, requires constant energy input to maintain the driving force. Further reducing the external energy consumption or accelerating the liquid transport during separation is still a challenge. The Janus membrane is an emerging porous material with opposing wettability toward a specific liquid on each side. The asymmetric wettability distribution leads to a surface energy gradient-driven liquid-transport behavior through the thickness, which significantly facilitates liquid transportation. It is conceived that porous materials possessing both Janus features and selective superwettability would reduce energy consumption and strengthen the efficiency in oil–water separation. Herein, a novel durable superoleophobic (SOHB) Janus fabric which possesses oil-repellent and surface energy gradient-driven water-transport properties was developed through one-side superoleophobic/superhydrophilic modification of the superamphiphobic fabric. The SOHB Janus fabric exhibits high mechanical durability and significant superior capacity than the homogeneous superoleophobic/superhydrophilic fabric in separating various oil–water mixtures. Moreover, the SOHB Janus fabric repels oil contaminants and pumps perspiration from the human skin, exhibiting prospects in physical moisture regulation and comfort improvement. Our novel Janus fabric, along with the fabrication principle, provides a feasible solution for energetic-efficient oil–water remediations and would have implications for the fabrication of advanced separation membranes and intelligent functional clothing.

The growing high standard of people’s wear has put forward requirements for fabrics, and multifunctional fabrics have been developed precisely in response to the requirements of the times. However, the incineration of waste fabrics produces a large amount of pollutants, resulting in a massive waste of resources and environmental pollution. Herein, the degradable nanofiber yarns (NYs) with self-cleaning properties were fabricated by in situ growth of SiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of the electrospun poly(p-dioxanone) (PPDO) NYs using the Stöber method. Then, the PPDO NYs were blended with carbon fibers and the PPDO/SiO2 NYs with themselves to form the Janus PPDO fabrics, respectively. The Janus PPDO fabric offered asymmetric wettability and dual personal thermal management properties. The PPDO/C side of the Janus PPDO fabric provided 65.8 °C at 1.5 V or 58.5 °C under one sunlight intensity for radiative heating. The PPDO/SiO2 side exhibited high solar reflectivity (81.8%) and mid-infrared (MIR) emissivity (99.1%), which reduced the skin temperature by 4.6 °C, resulting in radiative cooling. Moreover, the Janus PPDO fabrics display an excellent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance (53.3 dB). Therefore, yarn-based degradable Janus fabric has a promising future in multifunctional wearable products.

The art of passive thermal management lies in effectively mitigating heat stress by manipulating the optical spectra of target objects. However, a significant obstacle remains in finding a structure that can seamlessly adapt to diverse thermal environments. In response to this challenge, we posit that Janus fabrics have unique advantages for multi-scene applications when carefully engineered. A Janus fabric with an upper side exhibiting a 92% solar reflectivity and a 94% emissivity, along with a lower side possessing an infrared emissivity below 30% could enable energy savings at a large scale. It outperforms commercial products in terms of energy-saving efficiency under different climate conditions. Furthermore, the scalable manufacturing compatibility and outstanding performance make the Janus structure a promising avenue for diverse passive thermal management scenarios.

Membrane separation materials with special wettability are progressively desired due to economy, high efficiency, and continuous operation. Among them, Janus membrane materials play an important role in controllable oil/water separation with the help of different wettability on each side. However, they still face various challenging problems, such as involvement of toxic chemicals, complexity of the modification process, and poor stability. In this study, based on the yarn functionalization and fabric structure design, double-layer Janus fabric membranes (JF membranes) with hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity were woven on each side of the membranes. The results showed that JF membranes achieved separation efficiency of 99.47 ± 0.35 % and 97.66 ± 0.53 % for light oil/water mixture and heavy oil/water mixture, and the separation flux exceeded 3008.5 L · m −2 · h −1 and 7161.04 L · m −2 · h −1 , respectively. Meanwhile, JF membranes can also separate oil-in-water emulsions (separation efficiency >96.33 %) and water-in-oil emulsions. In addition, JF membranes exhibit desirable chemical stability, mechanical durability and reusability. These results highlight the potential application of JF membranes with asymmetric wettability in oil-water separation and provide a novel, convenient, and feasible strategy for fabricating environmentally friendly membrane separation materials.

The Janus fabrics offer potential advantages in moisture management for a comfortable microclimate between our bodies and the environment, but challenges remain in achieving desirable unidirectional sweat transfer and integrating wearing comfort, cost-effectiveness, and fabrication scalability. Here, cotton fabrics are modified on their opposing surfaces to create a Janus structure with dual discrepancies in surface energy and fabric porosity, resulting in improved water transport capability and a well-balanced combination of the mentioned properties. The hydrophobic surface was created by covalently grafting a block copolymer, poly(acrylic acid)- b -poly(lauryl methacrylate), onto one side of a cotton fabric using a “mist polymerization” technique. Porosity differentiation was then achieved by electrospinning silk fibroin (SF) onto the opposite side. The resulting dual-discrepancy in the fabric synergistically enhances its unidirectional transport capability, achieving an outstanding water evaporation rate of 3.0 kg m −2 in 6 h, and at least 2 °C evaporative cooling compared with other conventional fabrics such as cotton and PET. This study demonstrates valuable insights into the development of smart textiles that provide a comfortable microclimate for the human body.

Existing personal thermal regulating fabrics fall short of meeting the demands for sustainable and protective outdoor temperature management. Here, a versatile and comfortable Janus fabric has been developed by embedding boron nitride nanosheets within a porous polyurethane matrix (BNNS@TPU) and introducing Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene into another layer of TPU pores (MXene/TPU). The well-distributed BNNS in porous TPU matrix enhances refractive index difference, increases porosity and optimizes pore size distribution, resulting in an excellent solar reflectivity ( R = 94.22%), while the distinct distribution of MXene in porous TPU effectively improves solar absorptivity ( α = 93.57%) and enhances the conduction loss of electromagnetic waves due to multiple scattering and reflection effects. With a simple flip, Janus fabric can switch between sub-ambient cooling of ~ 7.2 °C and super-ambient heating of ~ 46.0 °C to adapt to changing weather and seasonal conditions. The fabric achieves an electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency of 36 dB, protecting the human body from electromagnetic radiation, attributed to the hierarchical distribution of highly conductive MXene. Furthermore, Janus fabric offers excellent comfort, abrasion resistance, washability, and flame retardancy for practical wear. This study presents an effective strategy for developing personal thermal regulating fabrics with adaptability to environmental changes and resistance to electromagnetic radiation. Graphical abstract

Wearable sweat sensors can noninvasively, in real time, and continuously monitor various physiological markers in sweat at the molecular level, which has a wide range of application prospects in the fields of health management, healthcare, and clinical diagnosis. However, effective sweat sampling remains a great challenge. Here, we prepared Janus fabric sweat glucose sensors, which were made by electrospinning hydrophobic polyurethane (PU) on a super hydrophilic gauze that can unidirectionally transport sweat from the skin (hydrophobic side) to the electrode (hydrophilic side). The screen-printed electrode modified by glucose oxidase has a good linear response to glucose. On-body experiments show that the sensor can detect glucose levels in sweat in real-time. The Janus fabric glucose sensor with its in situ monitoring capability and unidirectional liquid transport, and requires very low production costs, is expected to facilitate the development of smart textile sensors, opening new possibilities for exploring precise and controllable platforms for body fluid collection and sensing.

Porous media with directional water-transport capability have great applications in oil–water separation, moisture-harvesting, microfluidics, and moisture-management textiles. However, the previous directional water-transport materials chiefly work in the air. The materials with directional water-transport capability in the oil phase have been less reported. Here, we fabricated a novel Janus fabric with amphibious directional water-transport capability that can work both in the air and oil phases. It was prepared using dip coating and spraying to develop an oleophobic-hydrophobic to oleophobic-hydrophilic gradient across the thickness of the fabric substrate. The fabric allowed water droplets to rapidly transport from the hydrophobic to the hydrophilic side when the fabric was either in the air environment or fully immersed in oil. However, it hindered water transport in the opposite direction. More importantly, the fabric can overcome gravity to capture water from oil. Such an air–oil amphibious water-transport fabric showed excellent water collecting capability. In oil, it does not require any prewetting or extra pressure to perform directional water transport, which is vital for water–oil separation and microfluidics. Such amphibious directional water-transport function may be useful for the development of smart membranes and directional liquid delivery.

Janus fabrics with moisture management abilities have garnered significant attention for enhancing human physiological and thermal comfort. However, excessive sweating can lead to fabric flooding and diminished wicking capabilities once capillary channels within are saturated, thereby reducing wearer comfort and encouraging bacterial growth. Inspired by the oxidation and reduction behaviors of disulfide bonds in the perm process, we creatively anchor sericin and protamine onto to a single surface of hydrophobic polyester (PET) fabrics using a mist technique, enabling efficient water transport and antibacterial properties. Through fabrication process, sericin is covalently linked to the fabric, resulting in a wetting gradient ranging from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. Consequently, the Janus PET fabric (HAJP) attains diode-like unidirectional water transport properties, exhibiting remarkable unidirectional transport capability (with an R-value of 1080 %). Furthermore, protamine electrostatically adsorbed endows HAJP fabric with excellent antibacterial properties, effectively inhibiting growth of both Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) by 100 %. Even after 50 wash cycles and 600 rubbing cycles, the residual germicidal effect remains over 94 %. Additionally, benefiting from unidirectional water transport and rapid surface evaporation, HAJP fabric can lower human body temperature by 3–4 °C compared to conventional textiles like original PET and cotton fabric, implying potential utility in hot weather conditions. This work provides new insights and a promising research direction for the manufacture of advanced moisture management textiles with high antibacterial performance.
