Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) was partially grafted with dopamine (PAA-dopa), and then layer-by-layer assembled with poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVPON) to prepare hydrogen-bonded (PVPON/PAA-dopa)n film. Polydopamine (PDA) was deposited on (PVPON/PAA-dopa)n film in the presence of oxidant, and hence the whole (PVPON/PAA-dopa)nPDA film was cross-linked. (PVPON/PAA-dopa)nPDA could be utilized as a platform to produce the free-standing Janus film because of the easy detaching process and various chemical reactivity of PDA layer. Ag nanoparticles were formed on (PVPON/PAA-dopa)nPDA film by electroless metallization. 1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorodecanethiol (PFDT) was used to further modify the film through Michael addition. After detaching from the substrate, (PVPON/PAA-dopa)20PDA/Ag/PFDT exhibits reversible swelling–shrinking behavior as the pH value changes. This free-standing film shows Janus character, one side is hydrophobic, whereas the other side is hydrophilic. In addition, the hydrophobic surface exhibits a surface-enhanced Raman scattering effect, whereas the hydrophilic side does not.

Passive radiative cooling (PRC) and solar heating (SH) are highly desired in a variety of areas such as personal thermal regulation and thermal control of a building’s macroenvironment. However, most current thermal management materials are usually a single function with static temperature regulation, resulting in a poor feature with environment adaption. Here, a phase-change material-integrated dual-mode Janus film with enhanced radiative cooling and SH for thermal management is demonstrated. The Janus film is developed by integrating a paraffin-type phase-change material (PCM) and carbon nanotube (CNT)-modified poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), enabling both PRC and SH. The cooling mode of Janus film is achieved by infrared ray thermal radiation of PDMS and absorbing heat of PCM. The heating mode of Janus film is achieved by SH of the CNTs@PDMS layer, and solar energy is converted into heat energy stored and released by PCM@PDMS. The introduction of PCM enhances the practical effects of radiation cooling and SH. The energy storage of PCM can be released at night, avoiding unwanted overcooling. In addition, the PCM@PDMS features self-cleaning and self-repair abilities. This work provides a PCM-enhanced dual-mode thermal management strategy toward applications in a practical scenario with dynamic ambient temperature variations.

In order to explore the possibility of natural carbohydrate polymers as a biodegradable and sustainable fog water harvesting material, this work proposed an efficient substrate (hydrophobic)-transition layer (amphoteric)-coating (hydrophilic) sandwich spin-coating strategy to form all biomass-based Janus film. The oxalic acid hydrolyzed nanochitin (OAChN) was applied as a transition layer that enabled successful spin-coating of the hydrophilic nanocellulose (TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber , TOCN) and nanochitin (partially deacetylated chitin nanofibers, DEChN) on the hydrophobic polylactic acid (PLA) film substrate. In which a layer-by-layer (LBL) assembling of TOCN (carboxyl-rich negative surface charge) and DEChN (amino-rich positive surface charge) was designed to form a thickness and surface property controllable polysaccharide coating on PLA. The finally formed PLA-OAChN-TOCN/DEChN (LBL) film showed hydrophilic and hydrophobic heteromeric faces at the opposite sides and thus had improved fog water collection capacity of 90.85 mg·cm −2 ·h −1 (30 layers of TOCN/DEChN spin-coated on PLA), which was 276 % higher than the pure PLA film. The transition layer engaged sandwich spin-coating strategy, together with LBL assembling method proposed in this study provided a feasible fabrication of all biomass-based fog water collectors (FWC) that could contribute to alleviating water shortage.

Multi-functionalized thermochromic materials will greatly expand their application scopes. In this work, two functions of electrical conductivity and fluorescence are innovatively integrated into a thermochromic material by designing specific “macro + micro” Janus structures. Tri-functional thermochromic-anisotropic conductive-fluorescent thermochromic microcapsules-45 °C (TCM-45)/polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microfibers non-array&{[polypyrrole (PPy)/PMMA]//[Coumarin/PMMA] Janus microfibers array} up-down Janus film (named as TCFJAJF) is constructed by two-step electrospinning techniques of “single axis + parallel axis”. The up layer of TCFJAJF is TCM-45/PMMA microfibers non-array film (defined as U-TCFJAJF, viz. thermochromic layer) and the down layer of TCFJAJF is [PPy/PMMA]//[Coumarin/PMMA] Janus microfibers array film (denoted as D-TCFJAJF, viz. anisotropic conductive-fluorescent layer). The macroscopic up-down Janus structure eliminates the mutual influences between D-TCFJAJF and U-TCFJAJF. U-TCFJAJF has excellent color conversion and fading/coloring performances, achieving a reversible and multiple colors conversion from blue to white upon heating from 25 to 45 °C. A new concept of “transient thermal printing” is proposed based on fast thermal coloring/fading conversion of thermally printed patterns on film. Meanwhile, the microscopic Janus microfiber structure of D-TCFJAJF largely alleviates absorption to the excitation light and emission light of Coumarin by PPy and influence of Coumarin on conduction of PPy, ensuring the intense fluorescence and high conductivity. Due to the ordered arrangement of Janus microfibers, D-TCFJAJF has excellent anisotropic conductivity. As a demo application, TCFJAJF as a conductor can light up LED bulbs in a microcircuit and emit bright blue fluorescence under UV light excitation, achieving the working state visualization of the conductive microcircuit in dark surroundings. The multi-functionalized thermochromic film will have huge application prospects in fields of temperature monitoring, transient information reading and displaying, flexible electronics, fluorescent labeling and thermal-fluorescent dual encryption anti-counterfeiting, etc.

Fabrication of layered bioadhesives with asymmetric bioadhesion, on-demand detachment and inherent biological functions remains a great challenge. This work reports a novel and generalizable solvent volatilization-induced annealing (SVA) strategy to prepare a Janus film with an integrated dual layer structure, asymmetric adhesion, on-demand detachment and inherent biological functions. Depositing polyvinyl pyrrolidone/caffeic acid/lipoic acid (PVP/CA/LA) ethanol solutions onto an ethylcellulose (EC) layer and applying SVA strategy can integrate two layers in molecular-level to obtain the dual-layered Janus film. Porous PVP/p(CA-LA) surface pressed onto wet tissues can absorb interfacial water to form tight tissue contact, and their functional groups can form abundant bonds to induce robust bioadhesion. In contrast, dense EC surface limits water absorption and exhibits minimal adhesion of proteins, cells and tissues. Furthermore, the adhered Janus film can be detached by using a glutathione/sodium bicarbonate solution. Additionally, CA and LA provide the film with desired antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. Finally, by providing the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory microenvironment, the Janus film promotes angiogenesis and significantly expedites the healing of the oral ulcers in rats. This work not only introduces a novel approach for preparing multi-layered and asymmetric materials, but also paving the way for developing adhesive materials with inherent biological functions.

Large-area metamaterial nanostructures of a Janus gold nanoparticle (AuNP) film decorated with thiol-terminated polymers have been fabricated and tuned at an oil/water interface by a facile and innovative process. The results show that AuNPs had been arrayed with ultrasmall gaps between neighboring particles laminated with polymer which is called a Janus film. This film exhibits a sensitive property for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for determination of both hydrophilic methylene blue and hydrophobic thiram. The structure-dependent SERS of the Janus AuNP film has also been confirmed by a finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method.

Flexible actuators with responses to various environmental stimuli have attracted great attention, but the issues of weak layer-to-layer bonding and low water resistance of cellulose-based actuators severely restrict their practical application. Herein, inspired by the internal structure of lignocellulose and reversible opening movement of pine cones by external humidity stimuli, a novel Janus film consisting of the insulated lignin-containing cellulose nanopaper (CNP) layer and the conductive reduced graphene oxide (rGO) layer was delicately designed and well fabricated through lignin adhesion between the two layers. Characterization showed that the obtained Janus film with a tensile strength of 141 MPa could be used as a flexible actuator, which could be operated based on water absorption and dehydration of the CNP layer as well as the light-to-heat conversion and high conductivity of rGO layer. Thus, the as-fabricated Janus film with excellent durability (folding resistance (>1000 times), good wet stability, and durable electrical actuation (>500 cycles)) had quick multi-responses to humidity, near-infrared radiation and electrical stimulation. Particularly, the resultant Janus film had the fastest response speed (1.875°/s/V) under the electrical stimuli compared to the reported carbon/polymer-based flexible actuators with comparable weights. Therefore, this CNP-based Janus film can be potentially used in many fields such as humidity sensor, bionic artificial arm/driving motor, and it could be helpful to develop facile and environmentally friendly strategies for the construction of multi-responsive Janus actuator/intelligent devices.

Harvesting electricity from ubiquitous moisture offers the promise of clean power for self-sustained systems. Despite extensive efforts, achieving high-power electricity generation remains challenging. Existing studies mimicking electric eels’ electrogenesis to enhance their electrical performance focused on the two-membrane structure that linearly adds up the voltage, but their current output was either transient or limited to microamperes, because of the large resistance for ion diffusing across material interfaces. Here, we report an electrocyte-inspired moisture-driven electricity generator (EMEG) made from an interphase-mediated Janus film. The continuous interphase significantly alleviates the ion migration resistance, boosting the current output to 150 µA and sustaining the voltage of 0.8 V continuously for more than 1000 h. We also show that integrated EMEGs were easily assembled to self-powered smart watch for emergency rescue. Furthermore, the integrated EMEGs achieved self-sustained and moisture-powered water splitting with a steady hydrogen production. Our results provide a rational for bio-inspired designs toward green and sustained power generation.

X-ray equipment often needs to be used in complex and variable environments. Combining X-ray shielding materials with pressure sensing capabilities can ensure that the equipment effectively shields X-rays while under pressure, safeguarding operational safety. In this study, the Janus structure was designed to be equipped with high shielding performances and intelligence for Cs-Pb-Br systems perovskite (Cs-Pb-Br)/MXene/aramid nanofiber (ANF) composites. In Cs-Pb-Br/MXene/ANF Janus film, the rational longitudinal distribution of Cs-Pb-Br originated from Janus structure and the internal reflection originated from layered MXene significantly enhance the X-ray shielding performances. Kill two birds with one stone, the layered MXene in Janus structure endows film with sensitive mechanical sensing properties. The attenuation efficiency and mass attenuation coefficient of Cs-Pb-Br/MXene/ANF Janus film were 70.5–83.2 % and 83.2–121.5 cm 2 /g under a continuous X-ray generated from a tungsten target with applied voltage ranging from 20 kV to 70 kV. The Janus film demonstrated ideal strain sensing performance, lightweight (0.96 cm 2 /g), robust tensile stress (25.5 MPa), and excellent flexibility, laying a foundation for producing next generation of X-ray shielding materials, which are light, flexible and intelligent.

Bimorph soft actuators, traditionally composed of two materials with distinct responses to external stimuli, often face durability challenges due to structural incompatibility. Here, we propose an alternative design employing free-standing, isostructural heterogeneous Janus (IHJ) films that harmonize stability with high actuation efficiency. These IHJ films were fabricated through a vacuum self-assembly process, consisting of Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets and hybrid graphene oxide (GO)-biomass bacterial cellulose (BC), with a well-matched two-dimensional lattice structure. The special structure of the film, featuring continuous laminar layers and one-dimensional (1D) BC nanofibers intertwining with two-dimensional (2D) GO and MXene nanosheets, promotes interlayer slip during deformation, enhancing stability and deformability. The IHJ film responds swiftly to electrical stimuli, humidity, and light, causing layer expansion or contraction through the rapid absorption and release of water molecules and enabling controllable actuation. The IHJ film can be utilized as actuators in various soft robotic applications, such as a “flower robot” under electrical stimulus, a “passive switch” under humidity, and a “worm robot” under infrared lamp exposure. The design of the IHJ film achieves large-scale deformation, low power consumption, high responsiveness, and enhanced real-time sensing capabilities, representing an important development in soft actuator design.

Multifunctional and sustainable packaging materials applicable to changeable conditions are in high demand as alternatives to petroleum-based polymers. Soybean polysaccharides (SPS) with remarkable antioxidation and film-formation properties are great candidates for sustainable packaging materials. However, the poor water resistance and mechanical properties of SPS hinder their further application. Inspired by the Janus properties of lotus leaf, we developed asymmetric multifunctional packaging films by addressing the problems of SPS while keeping their merits. Specifically, SPS-stabilized silver nanoparticles were incorporated with gelatin and wax to enhance the mechanical properties and water tolerance of the resulting film. Moreover, hierarchical micro-/nano-structures consisting of carnauba wax were feasibly fabricated on one side of the film, resembling the natural front lotus leaf. This Janus film has outstanding water resistance, outperforming all other SPS-based materials reported to date. In addition, the excellent antibacterial activity (>95 % against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus ), antioxidation properties (2-fold enhancements), and UV-blocking performance (∼100 % at 200–400 nm) were well retained. By virtue of these multifunctional properties, the resulting film has been successfully applied in food packaging, as evidenced by meat and fruit preservation experiments. This biomimetic strategy provides a reference for the fabrication of sustainable high-performance food packaging.
