Janus particles exhibiting different physical and chemical properties in a single particle have attracted tremendous attention for extensive applications, especially ones constructed from micro/nanoscale building blocks. However, a reliable and scalable fabrication of magnetic Janus particles with hierarchical structures and desired functions remains challenging. Herein, a self-growing strategy is proposed for magnetic Janus microparticles (MJMPs) composed of Fe 3 O 4 submicron spheres and photoactive BiOI nanosheets. The resultant MJMPs have a distinctive asymmetric three-dimensional hierarchical structure assembled from two-dimensional nanosheets and submicron particles. Such a structure not only achieves the enhancement of surface area, but also achieves good magnetic response for control and reuse as well as high photocatalytic ability for microplastics degradation. This work presents a facile and efficient approach for developing various Janus microparticles suitable for widespread practical applications.

The continuous spread of microplastics in aquatic environments poses a growing concern and a potential risk to human health. To address this concern, this paper presents a novel approach using magnetic Janus microparticles (MJMs) synthesized via a modified Pickering emulsion method with aminated Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 as the raw material. The effectiveness of these MJMs in removing polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene (PE) microplastics from water was investigated. Paraffin was employed as the masking agent, while N-Octadecylphosphosphonic acid (PAC 18 ) was used as the graft material for MJM preparation. The resulting particles exhibited a distinctive asymmetric flower-shaped structure on the surface, which was confirmed through various analytical techniques including FTIR , TGA , SEM , and water phase contact angle analysis. The MJMs demonstrated exceptional efficiency in adsorbing microplastics. With a microplastic suspension concentration of 2 mg/mL and an adsorbent dosage of 1 mg/mL, the MJMs can attain removal efficiencies of 92.08 % for PS and 60.67 % for PE in just 20 min of contact time. The effectiveness of the adsorption process was attributed to several factors, including hydrophobic interactions, cation-π interactions, electrostatic attraction, and the efficient dispersion of particles in water, as revealed by size distribution and zeta potential analysis. Additionally, kinetic and thermodynamic studies confirmed the remarkable adsorption rate and capacity of the MJMs (0.759 min −1 and 2.72 mg/mg for PS, 0.539 min −1 and 2.42 mg/mg for PE), highlighting their potential as a promising method for rapidly removing microplastics from water. This work provides valuable insights into the development of effective strategies for addressing microplastic pollution in aquatic environments.

Fluorescent magnetic multifunctional microparticles were fabricated by a facile droplet microfluidic strategy. Two sodium alginate streams, one doped with Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) and the other with CdSe/ZnS quantum dots , were introduced into a flow-focusing channel as a type of parallel laminar flow to form droplets containing two distinct parts. Then, at the serpentine channel, the Ca 2+ in the oil phase diffused into the droplets, causing the solidification of the droplets. Thus, the Janus microparticles with excellent magnetic/fluorescent properties formed. The flow conditions were optimized and the effects of the flow rates on magnetic/fluorescent compositions were carefully investigated. Luminescent labeling and magnetic separation were simultaneously realized with the newly designed microparticles. Moreover, spatial separation between Fe 3 O 4 NPs and QDs prevented the interference of QDs photoluminescence by the magnetic particles. The as-prepared fluorescent magnetic Janus particles were also successfully employed for DNA assay, which demonstrated the potential of the multifunctional microbeads in biological applications.

Microplastic accumulation in water bodies is posing a serious threat to public health. Their chemical inertness impairs the effectiveness of current micro/nano-material-based remediation strategies. Especially in urban drinking water systems, microplastics constantly released and accumulated together with the complexity of pipeline networks challenges the recyclability and long-term stability of remediation materials and technology. To address this, Cu-single-atom magnetic Janus microparticles (CuMJMs) with flower-like crown morphology are engineered meticulously via a step-by-step strategy involving solvothermal growth and chemical deposition. The resulting CuMJMs feature a distinct Janus architecture composed of BiOI nanosheets and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, thereby delivering synergistic magnetic and photocatalytic functionalities. When subjected to a rotating magnetic field, CuMJMs are able to locomote collectively and recover rapidly in confined microenvironments. The incorporation of atomically dispersed Cu single atom not only enhances the number of active sites, but also promotes the separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers. Such abilities enable CuMJMs to degrade polyethylene (PE) efficiently, achieving a weight loss rate of 53.7 % beyond previous reports. This performance improvement is ascribed to singlet oxygen generation boosted by the Cu single atoms to facilitate oxidative degradation pathways, as supported by electron paramagnetic resonance and active species trapping test. While used in real water matrices, CuMJMs maintain both catalytic activity and magnetic responsiveness, underscoring their robustness and practical potential. This work establishes a new paradigm to active microplastic remediation, merging atomic-level catalytic precision with collective particle behavior to enable scalable and efficient environmental cleanup.

The incidence of cancer and other diseases continues to increase, posing a serious threat to human health. Drug delivery systems using bionic red blood cell (RBC)-like microparticles (MPs) as drug carriers have been extensively studied, as they are considered ideal carriers due to the unique shape. However, most methods of preparing multifunctional RBC-like MPs are complicated, and the cell affinity and therapeutic effect of MPs prepared using simple electrospray are unsatisfactory. In this context, hydrophilicity-enhanced and magnetic-luminescent bifunctional RBCs-like Janus MPs [Fe 3 O 4 @poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-PLGA/PLGA]//[NaYF 4 :Eu 3+ @PLGA-PEG-PLGA/PLGA] were successfully prepared by one-step double-needle electrospray method. The physical and chemical properties, such as morphology, particle size, structure, and thermal stability of the MPs, were studied. The addition of block polymer PLGA-PEG-PLGA was found to enhance the hydrophilicity of the MPs, promote cell spreading and adhesion proteins (focal adhesion kinase and Paxillin) mRNA expressions of human umbilical vein endothelial cells, significantly improving the cell affinity. The results also demonstrated that RBC-like MPs exhibited excellent magnetic and enhanced luminescent properties, making them a promising candidate for various biomedical applications, including drug delivery systems, magnetic targeting, bio-imaging, and fluorescent tracing.

The shape and function of micro-/nano-particles for loading drugs play an important role in the transportation process of the drug delivery system. This study successfully fabricated red blood cell (RBC)-mimicking Janus microparticles (JMPs) using double-needle electrospray, which contained porous Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and upconversion (UC) luminescent nanoparticles NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+ and exhibited a unique two-compartment structure. The JMPs possessed excellent magnetic and UC luminescent properties, as well as good hemocompatibility and cellular compatibility. Importantly, the two compartments of the Janus structure significantly enhanced the UC luminescent intensity compared to single compartment microparticles by reducing direct interactions between Fe3O4 MNPs and UC luminescent materials. By utilizing the porous structure of Fe3O4 MNPs, doxorubicin hydrochloride was loaded into Fe3O4 MNPs and then embedded into the JMPs resulting in a slow-release effect. Given the excellent properties of magnetic and UC luminescence, biocompatibility, and drug slow-release ability, the RBC-mimicking JMPs have significant potential for drug delivery and bioimaging applications.
