It is of utmost importance that bleeding should be stopped and infection be prevented in people with trauma. In this study, an anisotropic Janus mesoporous silica nanosheet (MSNS) with different functional groups was designed and prepared. In order to endow both sides of the MSNS with independent fast hemostasis and effective antibacterial action, the MSNS was modified with cardanol (CA) and 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethylammonium (GTA). The addition of CA significantly improved the hemostatic property of the MSNS. In a SD rat femoral artery injury model, the hemostatic time of CA-MSNS-GTA was 47% shorter than that of the MSNS, attributed to the sealing of the hydrophobic alkyl side chain and the adhesion of phenolic hydroxyl groups in CA. CA-MSNS-GTA could form a three-dimensional network with fibrin to further accelerate the coagulation process. This Janus material exhibited excellent antibacterial effects (∼90%) against Gram-positive bacteria (S. pneumoniae) and Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli) due to the presence of GTA. The cytotoxicity test showed that CA-MSNS-GTA exhibited biosafety, which provided safety guarantee for clinical applications in the future. This Janus dressing with different functions on two opposite sides provides synergetic multifunctional effects during wound healing.

In recent years, Janus materials have become a research hotspot in the field of materials science; however, fabricating inorganic Janus-like nanofibers (NFs) is still a challenge. Herein, we report novel ZnO/NiO Janus-like NFs with efficient photocatalytic performance via an electrospinning method followed by calcination treatment. The morphology, structure, chemical composition and crystallinity of ZnO/NiO Janus-like NFs were studied in detail via SEM, TEM, HRTEM, EDS, FT-IR, XPS and XRD, indicating that the NFs had a perfect Janus-like structure composed of ZnO and NiO. A series of photocatalytic experiments were carried out in aqueous organic dye solutions under 365 nm UV radiation for 1 h, with the degradation rate of malachite green able to reach 96%, proving that the NFs have great potential in the field of organic dye degradation. Furthermore, a reasonable catalytic mechanism for the ZnO/NiO Janus-like NFs was proposed, which was discussed from the view of electron–hole pairs and p-n junctions. In short, the method in our work is expected to become a new way of effectively preparing functional inorganic Janus-like NFs.

Janus wettable material is considered one of the most promising candidates for fog collection. However, the applications of fog collectors are confined by many weaknesses nowadays, such as tedious fabrication methods, low mechanical stability and durability, and poor collecting efficiency. Among them, improving fog harvesting efficiency is a big challenge to be overcome. Herein, a series of hydrophobic-superhydrophilic Janus system has been successfully fabricated by a facile and eco-friendly method including etching and interface modification. Importantly, under the inspiration of natural creatures, the topography of hydrophobic surface in Janus system can be modulated by modifying substances with different low surface energy, effectively improving the fog collecting performance, and obtaining an excellent fog harvesting efficiency of 3718 mg·cm −2 ·h −1 in unenclosed fog environment. The underlying mechanism is designed to discuss the enhancement of fog collection in terms of fog capture, drop coalescence and drop transportation. Meanwhile, it is recyclable and durable even maintained for at least 5 months. Moreover, it exhibits good stability during mechanical, thermal and ultraviolet (UV) resistance testing. Overall, the findings open up a new avenue to design Janus materials for efficient fog harvesting by regulating micromorphology and promote a promising candidate for addressing water scarcity.

The fabrication of surfaces with varying wettability is crucial for developing Janus materials. In this study, a Janus Cu/Ti mesh with asymmetric wetting surfaces is fabricated using diffusion bonding. The Ti and Cu meshes are bonded through vacuum hot-pressing, forming a two-layer compositing, and the CuTi intermetallic compound is found at the interface. High-density TiO 2 nanostructures are synthesized on the Ti wire via hydrothermal treatment in NaOH. Subsequent immersion in a stearic acid solution, renders the Cu mesh hydrophobic, while the Ti mesh retains its hydrophilic properties, resulting in a Janus Cu/Ti mesh with asymmetric hydrophobic/superhydrophobic behavior. The unidirectional transport properties of this Janus mesh, including water penetration and bubble/oil manipulation, are systematically studied. Additionally, a superhydrophobic/hydrophilic Janus mesh is achieved by synthesizing CuO nanosheets on Cu mesh and applying surface modifications. This approach broadens the technological framework for fabricating Janus materials and enhances the potential applications of diffusion bonding, highlighting its versatile prospects.

Janus materials exhibiting superwettability, unique structure, and fascinating properties have emerged as important candidates for solving the practical problems encountered in various fields. However, practical applications of such surfaces are limited due to their inability to repel oil in air and poor mechanical robustness. In this study, we developed a new concept of creating a bulk Janus material (BJM) that used porous skeleton structure to lock-in the nanocomposite filler. Compared to the Janus materials with characteristics similar to those of lotus leaf, the BJM exhibits in-air superamphiphobicity on one side and underwater superoleophobicity on the other side. Surprisingly, the BJM surfaces maintain their super-repellent nature toward liquids after finger-wipe, knife-scratch, sand impact, tape-peeling, and even 100 abrasion cycles with sandpaper. Moreover, these developed BJMs can be applied to underwater oil transportation channels, and they sustain high-efficient self-cleaning performance even after exposure to harsh environments. Undoubtedly, these materials should find potential usage in marine oil transportation pipelines.

Among numerous oil-water separation materials, coalescence materials have received widespread attention. In this work, we prepared a lotus leaf-shaped Janus coalescing material by physically mixing polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) first, pressing it into sheets, then single-face hydrophilic modifying by chemical oxidation method, followed by pressing into a lotus leaf shape. Finally, holes were physically punched at the upper and lower sides of the coalescing material to let the oil drops pass through freely, greatly reducing the time for oil droplets to float. The shape of lotus leaves could provide more opportunities for oil droplets to collide and coalesce. The coalescing materials had asymmetric wettability, with specific surfaces that were oleophilic on the one hand and hydrophilic on the other. The oil droplets adhered to the oleophilic side of the coalescing material, coalesced and grew, then floated up and passed through the coalescing sheet layer by layer until they reached the oil collecting port to realize oil-water separation. The structural parameters of the coalescing material were progressively optimized. The obtained coalescing material exhibited a high oil-water separation efficiency of 99.40 ± 0.5% with good stability during a 48 h continuous oil-water separation, which provided a reference for the development of efficient coalescing materials.

Two-faced characteristics and performance of materials driven by asymmetric physical or chemical properties exist in Janus hybrid materials which show synergistic and improved properties for a variety of applications. Here, we report a facile synthesis of Janus hybrid sustainable cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) sponge with asymmetric wettability and strong mechanical property for excellent separation efficiency of oil-water emulsions. Briefly, the CNF Janus hybrid sponge was fabricated by freeze-drying of two separate CNF suspensions into one, each prepared separately by introducing CNFs in methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) or 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) for hydrophobic or hydrophilic performance, respectively. The sponge demonstrated satisfactory mechanical stability with an excellent recovery from 80% compressive strain and high pore tortuosity. When employed for oil-water separation, the Janus hybrid sponge could selectively be used to collect water or oil by just switching its side facing the oil-water mixture feed via unidirectional gravity-assisted separation, with recyclability. The fabrication of such Janus hybrid sponge is one of the many approaches for utilizing nanofibers in structurally adaptive, self-supported asymmetric membrane structures in a 3D network.
