Janus Separation-Sensing Membrane Hosted with Enzyme@MOF Nanoreactor for Real-Time Blood Sensing

Fangbing Wang,Jing Ren,Qiwen Peng,Hongyi Sun,Qiankun Zeng,Yongheng Zhang,Guoyue Shi,Min Zhang

Plasma separation, rich in biomarkers crucial for diagnosis, is conventionally achieved via high-speed centrifugation, a method hindered by its blood usage, lengthy processes, and complex operations, which delays detection. We introduced a novel real-time blood sensing method based on a Janus membrane and enzymes @MOFs. Asymmetric driving of the janus membrane can realize spontaneous separation of plasma and prevent hemolysis during direct separation. Glucose oxidase (GOx), uric acid oxidase (UOx) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) were encapsulated in a hydrophilic organometallic framework (MOFs) to construct an enzyme cascade nanoreactor. Embedding enzyme in hydrophilic MOFs not only retains the natural conformation of free enzyme but also improves the brittleness of enzyme, endows MOFs with new biological functions, and expands its sensing application. Using 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) as a chromogen and a custom app for color interpretation, we achieved real-time visualization of glucose (Glu) and uric acid (UA) at a 50 μM limit. The system accurately analyzed serum samples, matching commercial kits and showing promise for portable, personalized diagnostics.

Nanofiltration-Inspired Janus Membranes with Simultaneous Wetting and Fouling Resistance for Membrane Distillation

Yuanmiaoliang Chen,Kang-Jia Lu,Wenxiao Gai,Tai-Shung Chung

Membranes with robust antiwetting and antifouling properties are highly desirable for membrane distillation (MD) of wastewater. Herein, we have proposed and demonstrated a highly effective method to mitigate wetting and fouling by designing nanofiltration (NF)-inspired Janus membranes for MD applications. The NF-inspired Janus membrane (referred to as PVDF-P-CQD) consists of a hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane and a thin polydopamine/polyethylenimine (PDA/PEI) layer grafted by sodium-functionalized carbon quantum dots (Na+-CQDs) to improve its hydrophilicity. The vapor flux data have confirmed that the hydrophilic layer does not add extra resistance to water vapor transport. The PVDF-P-CQD membrane exhibits excellent resistance toward both surfactant-induced wetting and oil-induced fouling in direct contact MD (DCMD) experiments. The impressive performance arises from the fact that the nanoscale pore sizes of the PDA/PEI layer would reject surfactant molecules by size exclusion and lower the propensity of surfactant-induced wetting, while the high surface hydrophilicity resulted from Na+-CQDs would induce a robust hydration layer to prevent oil from attachment. Therefore, this study may provide useful insights and strategies to design novel membranes for next-generation MD desalination with minimal wetting and fouling propensity.

Janus membrane with simultaneously robust scaling, wetting and fouling resistance for hypersaline organic wastewater treatment via membrane distillation

Haiyun Li,Zhengshi Yu,Yibo Lin,Wentian Zhang,Cunxian Lai,Lichao Xia,Fangang Meng,Shanshan Zhao

Membrane distillation (MD) is a promising technology for hypersaline wastewater treatment. However, commercial hydrophobic MD membrane usually suffers from severe wetting/fouling/scaling challenges that seriously hinder its wide applications. It is urgent to develop a robust MD membrane with simultaneous wetting/fouling/scaling resistance in a facile way. In this study, a Janus membrane with a dense hydrophilic nanofiltration top layer was simply fabricated by co-deposition of pyrogallic and polyethylenimine on hydrophobic polyvinylidene difluoride membrane followed by glutaraldehyde cross-linking. The Janus membrane can maintain stable performance during long-term treatment of saline wastewater containing surfactants, oil, and/or mineral ions, suggesting its excellent simultaneous wetting/fouling/scaling resistance. The mechanisms analyses reveal that the excellent wetting/fouling resistance is owed to the combined effects of strong surface hydration barrier, size exclusion, and strong capillary force. Moreover, the positively charged amino groups on the membrane surface further enhance the scaling resistance. Remarkably, the Janus membrane demonstrated exceptional performance during long-term (>100 h) treatment of ethylene waste lye, a hypersaline organic wastewater containing a broad spectrum of contaminants. The membrane possessed stable vapor flux and exhibited near-perfect salt rejection (99 %) and organic rejection (98 %). Our study provides a simple method for designing a robust Janus membrane for treating hypersaline organic wastewater and demonstrates the significant industrial application potential of MD technology.

Scalable, flexible and hierarchically porous Janus membrane inducing Zn-Ion flux redistribution and desolvation for dendrite-free zinc anodes

Jiawei Mu,Miao Yu,Bo Zhao,Yan Dai,Tiantian Li,Xiangcun Li,Xinhong Qi,Xuri Wang,Gaohong He

Optimizing Zn 2+ dispersion and regulating Zn 2+ deposition is a key issue in the aqueous Zn-ion anodes. Herein, the flexible membrane (CNT/PAN/Ag) with uniformly interwoven pores was facilely fabricated by one-step phase inversion method. The complex woven pore structure can effectively disperse the flow of Zn 2+ , reduce current density of nucleation sites, and avoid the aggregated deposition of Zn 2+ . Furthermore, the scalable Janus membrane with different affinities to electrolyte on the two sides can be designed based on the membrane surface structure. The high wettability of the upper surface of the membrane with electrolyte facilitates rapid transfer of Zn 2+ flux into the membrane for redispersion, and low wettability of the back surface is benefit to isolate electrolyte from surface of the zinc anode and to avoid side reactions brought about by the aqueous electrolyte. Meanwhile, by virtue of the high adsorption energy with Zn 2+ , the doped Ag active sites in the membrane further extend the dispersion path of Zn 2+ within the membrane and induce portion of Zn 2+ to be deposited within the membrane, balancing and reducing current density at the deposition interface. In the galvanostatic current test of the symmetric battery at 1 mA cm −2 , 0.5 mAh cm −2 , the battery can be stably cycled more than 1000 h, the specific capacity of pouch cell with NH 4 V 4 O 10 reserved 384 mA h/g at 5 Ag −1 after 95 cycles. The work presents a new flexible membrane design for solving the Zn dendrites in aqueous zinc ion batteries.

Preparation of polysulfone-based nanofiber Janus membrane for membrane distillation containing organic pollutants

Wu Zhuobin,Zheng Ke,Zhang Guichang,Huang Longwei,Zhou Shaoqi

Membrane distillation is an emerging wastewater treatment technology that harnesses low-grade heat as an energy source and exhibits potential for complete desalination. Nonetheless, two notable challenges hinder the practical application of this technology: membrane wetting and fouling. To counter these challenges, an innovative anti-fouling Janus membrane with asymmetric wettability was developed through electrospinning. The hydrophobic layer was formed using tetraethyl orthosilicate/polysulfone (PSF), and the superhydrophilic layer was created using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/PSF. A sensitive adhesion probe was used to assess the anti-fouling performance of the Janus membrane against oil. Molecular dynamics simulation suggested that PVP reduced the adsorption tendency of the membrane for humic acid (HA). Under experimental conditions involving saline water with HA and a saline oil–water emulsion, the non-Janus membrane suffered severe fouling, resulting in rapid water permeate flux decline. However, the Janus membrane demonstrated consistent permeate flux (26.84 LMH and 24.92 LMH) and an impressive salt rejection rate (> 99.99%). This study suggests that the Janus membrane, with its high permeate fluxes and remarkable resistance to fouling and wetting, could be an effective solution for wastewater treatment, with considerable potential for future application.

Hierarchical Janus membrane with superior fouling and wetting resistance for efficient water recovery from challenging wastewater via membrane distillation

Shanshan Zhao,Zhu Tao,Muqiao Han,Yu-xi Huang,Bin Zhao,Liang Wang,Xuelin Tian,Fangang Meng

Conventional hydrophobic membranes are susceptible to membrane fouling and pore wetting, impeding the applications of membrane distillation (MD) processes for water recovery from complex wastewater. To address these challenges, we herein developed a novel Janus membrane by a hybrid plant-derived polyphenols coating and polyelectrolytes layer-by-layer assembly strategy. Through alternative deposition of catechol/chitosan and polyethylenimine (PEI) on top of a hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate, a Janus membrane with a superhydrophilic and defect-free top layer was achieved. The synergistic effects of covalent bonding, non-covalent interactions, and electrostatic interactions between neighboring coatings endowed the membrane with robust chemical stability in the pH range of 2–12. In comparison with the pristine PVDF membrane, the Janus membrane exhibited remarkably stable water vapor flux and high quality of effluent during long-term treatments of non-ionic/cationic surfactants and Tween® 20-stabilized oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion in the bench-scale direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) experiments. The excellent anti-fouling and anti-wetting properties of the Janus membrane were attributed to its hierarchical structured superhydrophilic surface, in which a strong hydration layer was formed and served as an energetic barrier to prevent adsorption of surfactants and oil droplets. Moreover, the electrostatic repulsion between the protonated amino groups on the membrane surface and cationic surfactant molecules also contributed to the robust long-term performance (nearly one-week operation) of the Janus membrane in the treatment of saline water containing cationic surfactant. Our findings reveal the significant role of surface functionality in fouling and wetting resistance of MD membranes and the as-developed Janus membrane shows great potential for water recovery from saline wastewater containing challenging contaminants via DCMD.

A cost-effective and high efficient Janus membrane for the treatment of oily brine using membrane distillation

Lang Liu,Wei Wang,Ye Hong

Membrane distillation technology could utilize low-grade heat to desalinate brine, but the membrane material often suffers from disadvantages of low permeation flux and weak robustness to contaminants. To address these issues, the commercial polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane was modified by cost-effective chemicals of tannic acid and (3-Aminopropyl)-triethoxysilane (APTES) to construct hydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic nano-rough structures on the surface to enhance its flux and oil-fouling resistance in direct contact membrane distillation. The results show that a high underwater oil contact angle of 180° is observed to the membrane surface due to the rough nanostructures functionalized by abundant hydroxyl groups. Despite the additional mass transfer resistance provided by the rough nanostructures, the flux was increased noticeably. This is mainly attributed to the strong interactions between the abundant hydroxyl groups of hydrophilic layer surface and water molecules, leading to a part of free water staying at intermediate transition state (IW). The mass transfer resistance of the hydrophilic layer itself is reduced as a consequence of decreased evaporation enthalpy of water, thereby increasing the flux. Moreover, while the flux of the pristine membrane is reduced by 84.18%, the flux of Janus membrane remains the same when treating mineral oil brine emulsions with oil concentration up to 1500 ppm in comparison with the result for 35 g l−1 brine solution, indicating that the Janus membrane is safe from the oil contamination. Our work provides a fine guidance for membrane distillation to treat high oily brine.

Janus membranes with simultaneous flux enhancement and fouling/wetting resistance prepared by a modified interfacial polymerization process for membrane distillation

Cheng Lei,Jinlong Han,Tengyu Cui,Weifeng Cao,Yinhua Wan,Haoli Zhou,Fei Shen

Conventional membrane distillation (MD) membranes are hydrophobic and challenged by severe membrane fouling and wetting. Current surface modification strategies for anti-fouling and anti-wetting purposes, usually complex and time-consuming, often compromise the MD flux. Herein, we propose a modified interfacial polymerization (mIP) approach to fabricate Janus membranes with rapid and robust MD performance. In the mIP process, a dry hydrophobic substrate is first immersed in an oil-phase monomer solution and then in contact with an aqueous monomer solution to trigger the mIP reaction. The as-fabricated Janus membrane (e.g., IP 2 @PTFE) comprised an ultrathin, underwater oleophobic, and defect-free polyamide (PA) layer and a porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) substrate. Compared with the unmodified PTFE membrane, the vacuum MD flux of the IP 2 @PTFE membrane held a 177.4 % increase when tackling a NaCl solution (3.5 wt%) at 60 °C. When the NaCl solution contained sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant or/and mineral oil, the IP 2 @PTFE membrane exhibited fouling and wetting resistance simultaneously; conversely, severe oil fouling and quick SDS-induced wetting occurred on the pristine PTFE membrane. The mIP process does not require any pretreatment of the hydrophobic substrate, so it is facile and scalable. We believe that this study will facilitate the design of robust MD membranes.

Biomimetic Janus Membranes Fabricated via Single-Step Electrospinning: Bead-on-String Architecture for Enhanced Atmospheric Fog Harvesting

Xue Gao,Chaosheng Li,Chengbin Shen

To address water scarcity in arid regions, this study proposes a high-efficiency fog harvesting material development strategy based on wettability gradient regulation. Controllable assembly of polyvinyl chloride nanofibers with bead-on-string structures on hydrophilic substrate surfaces is achieved through a 5 min electrospinning process. The fabricated Janus membrane achieves a contact angle differential of 141°, establishing an asymmetric wetting structure that enables directional droplet transport. Experimental data show that its fog water collection flux is 2.1 times higher than those of traditional hydrophilic materials. Surface water droplets were absorbed by the Janus membrane in only 2 ms, while they were absorbed by the hydrophilic membrane in at least 5 ms. Moreover, after the water droplets were absorbed, the Janus membrane surface can remain in a fresh, dry state, which is conducive to further water absorption. The underlying mechanisms for the enhanced fog harvesting performance were detailed, with numerical simulations used to study the impact of the hydrophilic layer’s wettability on liquid penetration. Such a Janus membrane can be a promising candidate for fog harvesting against the water crisis.

Architecting highly hydratable and permeable dense Janus membrane for rapid and robust membrane distillation desalination

Chao Wang,Yangbo Qiu,Guangzhe Wang,Long-Fei Ren,Jiahui Shao

Dense Janus membranes (JMs) are potential candidates in hypersaline wastewater treatments for membrane distillation (MD). However, dense surface layers generally add obvious membrane mass transfer resistance, limiting its practical application. In this study, a novel dense JM was facilely developed by controlled interfacial polymerization utilizing a phosphonium functional monomer (THPC) on hydrophilic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate. MD desalination performance results showed that the optimized THPC/PVDF JM surprisingly achieved a flux even 21.3% higher than that of its substrate and exhibited robust stability to surfactants, oil, and gypsum. Importantly, potential mechanism of remarkable flux enhancement of dense JMs was revealed. Raman and DSC analyses showed that THPC/PVDF JM with elevated intermediate water content had minimal enthalpy for water evaporation, thus facilitating water vaporization. Dynamic water contact angle measurements, advanced microstructural characterization by positron annihilation spectroscopy and water permeability experiments etc. showed that THPC/PVDF JM with high hydrophilicity and appropriately enlarged effective pore sizes provided strong water-absorption capacity and water permeability, contributing to rapid water replenishment. Both synergistically contributed to an incredible increase in membrane flux. Meanwhile, the dense surface layer, featured by its strong hydrophilicity and abundant hydroxyl groups, effectively prevented complex contaminants from intruding hydrophobic substrate and discouraged oil/gypsum adhesion, ensuring stable MD operation. This study shall provide useful insights and strategies to design high-flux dense JMs with minimal membrane failure propensity, highlighting its great potential for efficient hypersaline wastewater treatments.

The High Flux of Superhydrophilic-Superhydrophobic Janus Membrane of cPVA-PVDF/PMMA/GO by Layer-by-Layer Electrospinning for High Efficiency Oil-Water Separation

Han Wu,Jia Shi,Xin Ning,Yun-Ze Long,Jie Zheng

A simple and novel strategy of superhydrophilic-superhydrophobic Janus membrane was provided here to deal with the increasingly serious oil-water separation problem, which has a very bad impact on environmental pollution and resource recycling. The Janus membrane of cPVA-PVDF/PMMA/GO with opposite hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties was prepared by layer-by-layer electrospinning. The structure of the Janus membrane is as follows: firstly, the mixed solution of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and graphene oxide (GO) was electrospun to form a hydrophobic layer, then polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofiber was coated onto the hydrophobic membrane by layer-by-layer electrospinning to form a composite membrane, and finally, the composite membrane was crosslinked to obtain a Janus membrane. The addition of GO can significantly improve the hydrophobicity, mechanical strength and stability of the Janus membrane. In addition, the prepared Janus membrane still maintained good oil-water separation performance and its separation efficiency almost did not decrease after many oil-water separation experiments. The flux in the process of oil-water separation can reach 1909.9 L m−2h−1, and the separation efficiency can reach 99.9%. This not only proves the separation effect of the nanocomposite membrane, but also shows its high stability and recyclability. The asymmetric Janus membrane shows good oil-water selectivity, which gives Janus membrane broad application prospects in many fields.Keywords:oil-water separation;Janus membrane;electrospun nanofiber;superhydrophobic

Comparison of omniphobic membranes and Janus membranes with a dense hydrophilic surface layer for robust membrane distillation

Dejun Feng,Xianhui Li,Zhangxin Wang

Membrane wetting, fouling, and scaling are three prominent challenges that limit membrane distillation (MD) applications. To overcome these challenges, novel MD membranes including omniphobic membranes and Janus membranes with a dense hydrophilic surface layer have been developed. In this study, we fabricated an omniphobic membrane and a Janus membrane composed of a dense polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) surface layer and a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate. The two membranes have been compared in MD experiments with different feeds. Furthermore, the working mechanisms of the two membranes have been elucidated. As a result, neither the omniphobic MD membrane nor the Janus MD membrane can resolve all three challenges at the same time. Specifically, both the omniphobic MD membrane and Janus MD membrane can resist wetting but via different working mechanisms. From breakthrough pressure (BP) determinations with an ethanol-water mixture (i.e., a low-surface-tension liquid), the omniphobic MD membrane resists wetting as its LEP (82.0 ± 9.2 kPa) is larger than the transmembrane pressure in the MD operation, while the Janus MD membrane resists wetting because the huge capillary pressure (550 ± 50 kPa) in the dense hydrophilic surface layer retains the wetting solution. The omniphobic MD membrane is prone to oil fouling because of the strong underwater hydrophobic attraction between the membrane surface and the mineral oil droplets, while the Janus MD membrane can substantially mitigate fouling due to the lack of attraction between the mineral oil droplets and the hydrophilic membrane surface. The omniphobic MD membrane exhibits outstanding scaling resistance because minerals can hardly precipitate and/or crystalize on the membrane surface, while the Janus MD membrane was susceptible to scaling due to the precipitation and/or crystallization of minerals inside the hydrophilic surface layer. Therefore, the selection of MD membranes should depend on the feed constituents. Overall, our study provides important guidelines for the future development of robust MD membranes.
