The use of nanofluids in formations with high temperatures and high salinity is currently encountering significant obstacles. Therefore, a Janus SiO 2 -surfactant dispersion consisting of Janus nanoparticles and surfactants was constructed in the current study. The Janus SiO 2 -surfactant dispersion is resistant to both high temperatures and high salinity. The Janus SiO 2 -surfactant dispersion, consisting of Janus SiO 2 nanoparticles and the non-ionic surfactant Tween80, is abbreviated as JASN-T80 hereafter. The system can be dispersed and kept stable for one week at a salinity of 30,000 mg/L and a temperature of 85 ℃. The concentration of f nanoparticles and surfactant in the system was optimized at 0.02 wt% Janus SiO 2 nanoparticles + 0.04 wt% Tween80 based on the particle size. An assessment was conducted to measure the system's capacity to decrease interfacial tension and alternate wettability. The interfacial tension between oil and water was reduced to 1.21 mN/m. The JASN-T80 system demonstrates a notable capacity to change wettability by decreasing the contact angle of water on an oil-wet rock surface from 100.6° to 70.5°. The combination of nanoparticle and surfactant leads to a synergistic effect, resulting in an imbibition recovery of 44.28 % for ultra-low permeability core. This work provides a novel concept for the advancement and utilization of nanofluid imbibition system for unconventional reservoir.

The eco-friendly viscoelastic surfactant (VES) system, whose viscoelasticity can be enhanced by nanoparticles (NPs), is an appropriate substitute for polymer fracturing fluid. In the present study, the JA12C NPs (Janus SiO 2 nanoparticles decorated with dodecyl hydrophobic carbon chain) are successfully synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The prepared JA12C NPs are separately induced into three kinds of fracturing fluids (anionic-based VES (aVES), cationic-based VES (cVES), and zwitterionic-based VES (zVES) fluids) to investigate their effects on the rheological properties of various VES fluids. It is found that additional JA12C NPs significantly enhance the viscoelasticity of cVES fluid, while hardly affecting that of aVES and zVES fluids. Then the zeta potential of mixed JA12C/surfactant dispersions and the rheological parameters of diverse VES systems are measured to explore the interaction mechanism of wormlike micelles (WLMs)/JA12C mixture. It is believed that the intensive hydrophobic interaction and the moderate electrostatic repulsion between WLMs and JA12C should be responsible for the visibly enhanced viscoelasticity of JA12C-assisted cVES (cJAVES) fluid. This work suggests the feasibility of using Janus NPs to enhance the tolerance properties of VES fluids in harsh conditions, which fills the gap in the applications of VES fracturing fluids incorporating Janus NPs.

Wormlike micelles (WLMs) with superior viscoelasticity exhibited great potential application in petroleum industry. Compared with polymer systems, the relatively low viscoelasticity of WLMs should be further improved effectively. In this study, the amphiphilic Janus-SiO 2 nanoparticles (JAnC NPs, n represents the carbon atoms number of modified alkyl chain) were successfully fabricated, which were verified by Fourier transform infrared spectra and water contact angle measurements. Then the effects of additional JA3C NPs on the viscoelasticity of WLMs solutions formed by stearyltrimethylammonium bromide/sodium salicylate were systemically explored via rheology behavior and cryo-TEM pictures. Compared with original isotropic SiO 2 NPs, the amphiphilic JAnC NPs showed greater ability to improve the WLMs viscoelasticity. To explore the enhanced mechanism, the zeta potential of STAB/SiO 2 dispersions and the viscosity of WLMs formed by various surfactants with additional JAnC NPs were studied in the controlled experiments. In addition, a mathematical model was employed to calculate the quantity of junctions between micelles and NPs in different WLMs/NPs systems to confirm the proposed mechanism. This work firstly investigated the effects of the novel Janus-SiO 2 NPs on the WLMs viscoelasticity.

We report the design and synthesis of two kinds of amphiphilic Janus SiO 2 nanoparticles , including polyacrylic acid/polystyrene (PAA/PS) Janus SiO 2 and polyacrylic acid/polymethylmethacrylate (PAA/PMMA) Janus SiO 2 . The amphiphilic Janus SiO 2 nanoparticles can effectively stabilize polystyrene butyl acrylate (P(St-BA)) composite microspheres , forming low-cost oil displacing systems to improve the oil recovery of heterogeneous and low-permeability reservoirs. Among them, the PAA/PS Janus SiO 2 stabilized P(St-BA) are demonstrated with good injection, migration, and plugging performance, as well as high temperature and salt resistance. These advantages enable the system an oil recovery increment of 32%. In addition, the microspheres also present good enhanced oil recovery potential in heterogeneous reservoirs, especially for cores with a permeability ratio of 2.0. In principle, the oil displacement of this system is achieved by the synergic effect of amphiphilic Janus SiO 2 nanoparticles and composite microspheres. This work thus provides a promising method for high-performance yet low-cost oil recovery improvement.

The Janus nanoparticles stabilized Pickering emulsions showed great application potential in various fields, including enhanced oil recovery (EOR). In this study, the amphiphilic Janus-SiO 2 nanoparticles (Janus-C12) are successfully synthesized by the Pickering emulsion method and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), ζ-potential and contact angle measurements. The phase inversion from oil-in-water (O/W), multiple oil-in-water-oil (O/W/O) emulsion, to water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions was observed with the delicate control for the modification degrees of Janus-C12. The possible emulsification mechanisms for various Janus-C12 stabilized emulsions were proposed. The multiple O/W/O emulsion stability in harsh conditions and the influence factors (nanoparticles concentration, water/oil volume ratio and NaCl concentration) were studied systematically. Moreover, the Janus-C12–79% stabilized multiple O/W/O Pickering emulsions exhibited excellent EOR performance (additional oil recovery of 27.2%) in core flooding tests, and the possible EOR mechanism was explored via microscopic visualization experiments.
