Porous Juncus effusus fiber-supported W-Bi2S3 photocatalyst for purifying antibiotic wastewater to cultivate crop

Mengyao Cai,Xiaofeng Wang,Na Zhu,Wanjin Hu,Shuxiao Zhang,Shuishi Tan,Chunhua Zhang,Sijie Zhou,Lixin Du,Liangjun Xia

The excessive use of antibiotics and subsequent release into the aquatic environment causes deleterious effects on organisms. Using easily separable catalysts to remove antibiotics from aquatic environments is an effective strategy to release the burden of the aquatic ecosystem. Herein, as the natural porous cellulose fiber, Juncus effusus (JE) exhibits distinctive designability on the functional materials. The JE-based W-doped Bi 2 S 3 photocatalysts (W-Bi 2 S 3 -JE) were obtained by in-situ coating on the surface of JE fibers to improve the photodegradation performance of tetracycline (TC) antibiotic pollutants. Owing to the natural porous net-working structure of JE fiber, the aggregation of particles is reduced, promoting adsorption and photocatalysis. Under the condition of pH = 3.0 and mass of photocatalyst is 100 mg, the photodegradation efficiency is 98 % under irradiation for 180 min and the photodegradation efficiency could maintain 78 % after five cycles. Finally, the cultivation of crops was conducted to investigate the purification property of the solution after photocatalytic degradation. Compared with the solution before photodegradation, mung bean seeds can take root and germinate well irrigated by the solution after photodegradation and the growth is as strong as that of agricultural irrigation water. The W-Bi 2 S 3 -JE photocatalyst provides an attractive approach to restore the aquatic ecosystem polluted by antibiotics of TC, improving the application potential in environmental remediation.

Ma Wei,Zhang Yue,Ding Yun-Yun,Liu Feng,Li Ning

Bioactivity guided phytochemical investigation of the ethanol extract of the medullae of Juncus effusus resulted in the isolation of two new phenanthrenes, 8-hydroxymethyl-2-hydroxyl-1-methyl-5-vinyl-9,10-dihydrophenanthrene ( 1 ), and 5-(1-methoxyethyl)-1-methyl-phenanthren-2,7-diol ( 2 ) together with 15 known phenanthrenoids ( 3 – 17 ). The chemical structures of 1 and 2 were established by a combination of spectroscopic techniques. Compounds 1 – 15 and 17 were evaluated for their cytotoxic activities against five human cancer cell lines (SHSY-5Y, SMMC-7721, HepG-2, Hela and MCF-7) by CCK-8 assay, and their anti-inflammatory activities were also evaluated by inhibition on NO production in LPS-activated murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cells.

High-performance supercapacitors prepared on the base of nitrogen-doped tubular porous carbon from polypyrrole coated Juncus effusus

Zhengdong Ma,Yehua Shen,Xiaoheng He,Hua Fan,Wenbo Wang,Qiuhong Bai

Renewable biomass-derived carbon materials are beneficial for the sustainable development of energy. Herein, we propose a strategy to fabricate nitrogen-doped tubular porous carbon (PPy@JEC) by depositing Polypyrrole (PPy) on the surface of Juncus effusus (JE) microtubes and then carbonizing and activating with KOH. Changing the activation temperature and dosage of the activator could effectively regulate the pore structure of PPy@JEC. Such tubular porous carbon retains JE's natural microtubule structure for improving electrolyte ions transfer efficiency. The optimal carbon materials exhibited a high specific surface area (1955 m 2  g −1 ), good electrochemical performance (326 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 ), and the capacitance retention reached 66 % at 20 A g −1 . The symmetric supercapacitor constructed using the optimal PPy@JEC exhibits an energy density of 15 Wh kg −1 . The capacitance retention rate can remain 90.9 % after 15,000 cycles at 5 A g −1 . This work demonstrates that PPy@JEC can be a potential candidate for low-cost and sustainable supercapacitor electrode materials.

Highly selective and efficient removal of phosphate by La(OH)3-loaded Juncus effusus with a three-dimensional structure

Yuhang Xu,Wei Li,Sisi Qin,Kai Su,Junmin Chen,Shengli Zhang

ABSTRACT In this study, La(OH) 3 -loaded Juncus effusus (La-JE) with a three-dimensional structure was prepared via an in-situ precipitation and then wrapped in a cellulose membrane. The La-JE not only avoided the leakage of La(OH) 3 but also was separated from solution easily. The optimal pH for phosphate removal by the La-JE was 6. The removal rate of phosphate was positively correlated with adsorption time, La-JE dosage and reaction temperature, and negatively correlated with phosphate concentration. The adsorption process conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetic model and was better fit by Freundlich model. At 25°C, the maximum adsorption capacity of the La-JE was 22.75 mg·P/g. The influence of SO 4 2– , Cl – , NO 3 – , NH 4 + , HCO 3 – and CO 3 2– on phosphate removal was negligible, suggesting that the La-JE had good anti-interference ability. Mechanism analysis showed that the removal process of phosphate was related to both ligand exchange and surface precipitation. The application in real water environment exhibited that the La-JE had good potential for advanced dephosphorization of sewage treatment plant and natural waterbody remediation.

A highly porous fiber electrode derived from Juncus effusus and its shape recovery and electrochemical capacitive properties

T. Xia,W. Wu,J. Zhao,Q. Li,C. Ao,J. Zhang,Q. Wang,W. Zhang,C. Lu

Portable and wearable electronic devices have gained increasing popularity in recent years. However, they usually suffer from all kinds of local stress under mechanical deformation , which is inevitable and even causes permanent mechanical deformation over time. Herein, we report a novel shape recovery electrode material derived from the naturally occurring Juncus effusus (JE). Remarkably, the fiber-shaped JE exhibits unique three-dimensional (3D) reticular and hollow tubular microstructures. In order to provide JE with energy storage capability, the active materials, namely carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and polyaniline (PANI), were successively deposited on JE. The as-prepared JE-CNT-PANI was rather flexible and knittable and demonstrated attractive shape recovery properties in water and H 2 SO 4 solution. Even if serious deformation occurred, it would recover its original shape very rapidly once immersed in the solvent again. A symmetric supercapacitor (SC) assembled from JE-CNT-PANI fiber electrodes delivered a large specific capacitance of 117.00 F g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 (based on the mass of the entire electrode), which was comparable to or even outperformed many early reported two-electrode PANI-based SCs. In addition, the SC could have 112.4% of the original capacitance after 100 times of shape recovery, indicating its excellent electrochemical stability under deformation. These results strongly suggested that JE could potentially become a powerful resource for applications in electrochemical capacitive devices.

Zhaozixuan Zhou,Jianhong Guo,Chunhua Zhang,Sijie Zhou,Junyao Gong,Zhuan Fu,Xinyu Wang,Lingling Su,Lin Feng,Wenbin Li,Liangjun Xia

The leakage of oil and organic solvents has emerged as the primary factor of water resources contamination and environmental degradation, causing an urgent and desirable quest for widely exploring and developing eco-friendly materials with hydrophobicity and lipophilicity. Herein, we presented a biomass-based separator composed of poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) and natural Juncus effusus (JE) which effectively separated oil-water mixtures, to address the aforementioned issue. The as-prepared PVB/JE-based separator, benefiting from the microporous, inner three-dimensional (3D) structure, and natural wettability of JE fiber, exhibits satisfied oil absorption and separation capabilities. The hydrophobic porous in PVB/JE can effectively block the water within the oil, while providing saturated oil absorption capacity. Furthermore, the separator can also efficient separate water in multiple types of water-in-oil surfactant-stabilized emulsion (separation efficiency > 93%). After repeated use (10 cycles) or continuous filtration (20 min), the separator maintained good separation efficiency ( > 83%) and flux ( > 2000 L m −2 h −1 ). The PVB/JE-based separator exhibited satisfied potential for the rational utilization of biomass materials and application in oil/water separation, owing to its convenient manufacturing process, high separation efficiency, and eco-friendly raw material.

Dihydrophenanthrenes from Juncus effusus as Inhibitors of OAT1 and OAT3

Xue Li,Yilin Qiao,Xue Wang,Ruicong Ma,Tianxiang Li,Youcai Zhang,Robert P. Borris

Organic anion transporters 1 (OAT1) and 3 (OAT3) play important roles in the renal elimination of a range of substrate molecules. Little is known about natural products that can modulate OAT1 and OAT3 activities. The medullae of Juncus effusus is often used for the treatment of dysuria in traditional Chinese medicine. To study the interactions of phytochemicals in J. effusus with human OAT1 and OAT3, a bioactivity guided phytochemical investigation led to seven new phenanthrenoids along with nine known compounds, including eight phenanthrenoids and a benzophenone from the dichloromethane soluble fraction of a methanol extract of the medullae of J. effusus. The structures were established by physical data analysis, including high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and 1D and 2D NMR. The compounds were evaluated for inhibition of OAT1 and OAT3 in vitro. Compounds 10 and 16 were inhibitors for OAT1, and compounds 1–3, 10, and 16 were inhibitors for OAT3 with IC50 values less than 5.0 μM. Dihydrophenanthrene 1 markedly altered the pharmacokinetic parameters of the diuretic drug furosemide, a known substrate of both OAT1 and OAT3, in vivo.

Flexible and weavable secondary Zn-MnO2 batteries derived from cellulose of Juncus effusus

Yuefei Zou,Wanlin Wu,Tian Xia,Jiangqi Zhao,Qunhao Wang,Wei Zhang,Canhui Lu

To keep pace with the fast development of portable and wearable electronics, considerable public and scientific attentions have been paid to the flexible energy storage devices with characteristics of light weight, low cost and high electrochemical performance. In this work, we demonstrate a feasible strategy to fabricate novel strand-shaped electrodes from the biomass of Juncus effusus (JE), which can be easily integrated into flexible and rechargeable Zn-MnO 2 batteries with high electrochemical performance. Notably, JE has a very unique three dimensional (3D) triangular-like hollow network microstructure, which greatly favors active material loading, charge transfer and ion diffusion. The obtained aqueous battery presents an excellent specific capacity of 325 mAh g −1 at the current density of 0.3 A g −1 , as well as stunning cycling stability for up to 4000 cycles with 127.53 % retention of the initial capacity. Remarkably, when assembled with a gel electrolyte, the quasi-solid-state battery can work normally under various extreme conditions, including bending, hammering, burning, soaking and puncturing. In addition, due to the high flexibility, the electrodes can be woven in parallel into a textile to form an energy supply unit and successfully power an electronic watch, demonstrating high potential of JE in the fabrication of flexible energy storage devices.

Sequential bacterial-fungal fermentation upgrades Juncus effusus into an antibacterial biosorbent for cationic dyes

Hai-Juan Zhao,Su Sun,Zhen-Yu Wang,Li Chen,Muhammad Wajid Ullah,Yan-Bo Zhang,Jian-Gang Zhou

The growing contamination of dye-enriched wastewater is a major environmental issue, driving extensive research into the development of adsorbents with high removal efficiency and exceptional adsorption capacity for dyes. Biomass adsorbents, valued for their renewability and low cost, have gained significant attention for treating cationic dye-contaminated wastewater. However, their susceptibility to bacterial contamination remains a challenge, as it can significantly reduce their adsorption effectiveness. To overcome these challenges, we have developed a novel adsorbent, named JBF, composed of Juncus effusus (JE), bacterial cellulose (BC), and fungal mycelium (FM). JBF was synthesized through a sequential fermentation process involving JE, Taonella mepensis , and Trametes versicolor . This adsorbent demonstrated impressive adsorption capacities for methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV), and brilliant green (BG), with values of 307.8, 256.2, and 239.4 mg/g, respectively. The presence of hydrogen bonds between the highly polar -OH groups of the polyphenols in the adsorbent is a key factor in providing abundant adsorption sites. Adsorption data analysis revealed pseudo-first-order kinetics and alignment with the Langmuir isotherm model. Additionally, the antibacterial activity of JBF, derived from polyphenols produced by the metabolism of JE by T . versicolor , enhanced its environmental safety and reusability. This work introduces a sustainable, efficient, and antibacterial biosorbent, offering a practical solution for the removal of cationic dyes from wastewater.

A novel strategy for oil storage and transport in epoxy composites using biomass Juncus effusus fibers

Yuanyuan Feng,Bin Xu,Zhiqing Tian,Shuang Zhao,Hongyu Liu,Bingli Pan,Jiaxing Li,Rama Layek

The effective storage and delivery of lubricating oils within polymeric materials is crucial for enhancing their tribological performances. In this study, hollow Juncus effusus (JE) fibers with a diameter of 2.14 mm were employed as efficient carriers of paraffin wax (PW) in the epoxy resin (EP) matrix. The microstructure, morphology, and mechanical properties of the resulting epoxy resin/ Juncus effusus /paraffin wax (EP/JE/PW) composites were systematically characterized. Furthermore, the influence of PW content on the tribological performances of EP/JE/PW composites was studied. The results revealed that the average friction coefficient of the EP/JE/PW (1:20) was 0.19, and the wear rate was 6.06 × 10⁻ 5 mm 3 /N·m. Compared to pure EP, the composite exhibited an 80 % reduction in friction coefficient and an 88.02 % reduction in wear rate due to the solid-liquid dual lubrication mechanism. We report the use of biomass JE fibers for the effective storage and delivery of PW to enhance the tribological performances of EP for the first time. This study offers new insights into efficient oil storage and intelligent oil delivery in polymeric matrices using biomass-based JE fibers as an oil carrier and oil transport pathway.

A flexible strain sensor with three-dimensional microstructure using cellulosic Juncus effusus for monitoring human motions

Yunhe Wang,Zhaozixuan Zhou,Zhuan Fu,Junyao Gong,Wanjin Hu,Han Li,Jiyang Huang,Chunhua Zhang,Sijie Zhou,Liangjun Xia

JE fibers-based sensor with deposition of AgNPs/CNTs encapsulated by Ecoflex. • ACE-JE sensors with wide sensing range are designed based on various angles. • ACE-JE sensor can detect a variety of motions within a certain range. Flexible strain sensors have attracted extensive research and applications in health monitoring and human-machine interaction owing to their exceptional flexibility and mechanical stability. Introducing micro-nano structures into sensor design represents a significant approach for enhancing sensing performance. Juncus effusus (JE) is a biomass resource rich in natural cellulose polysaccharide (carbohydrate polymer), whose intrinsic three-dimensional porous polysaccharide skeleton provides an ideal microstructure template for flexible sensing devices. This study utilized the internal 3D cellulose skeleton structure of JE fiber as a microstructural template of sensor. After being loaded with AgNPs and CNTs and encapsulated in an elastomer, the JE-based flexible strain sensor with effective real-time motion sensing capability was fabricated. The sensing performance tests indicated that the sensor maintained normal operation within tensile strain ranges of 5%-100% and bending angles of 30°–180°, and maintain stable monitoring performance through 2000 testing cycles, showing better overall sensing capability than conventional biomass strain sensors. Thus, the AgNPs/CNTs/Ecoflex-modified JE fibers based flexible strain sensor demonstrates reliable human motion detection capabilities. Efficient Removal of Dye from Wastewater without Selectivity Using Activated Carbon-Juncus effusus Porous Fibril Composites

Lipei Ren,Guomeng Zhao,Luqi Pan,Bei Chen,Yali Chen,Qian Zhang,Xingfang Xiao,Weilin Xu

Adsorption techniques have been successfully applied in water purification because of their flexibility, simplicity of design, and effectiveness. Activated carbon is an effective absorbent using for dye adsorption; however, the powder structure is not conducive for practical applications and cannot be used to filter dye solutions which are challenges that still need to be addressed. Herein, a natural cellulose-based absorbent, activated carbon-Juncus effusus fiber (AC-JE fiber), demonstrates the removal of all kinds of dyes without selectivity and humic substances and humic-like organics from wastewater. The combined macroporous structures of JE fibers and the microporous and mesoporous structures of activated carbon particles enhance their adsorption properties. These composite absorbents have excellent adsorption and continuous filtration effect. The rejection rate is approximately 100% not only on acidic and anionic dyes but also on basic and cationic dyes. Moreover, the dye solution adsorbed by AC-JE fibers exhibits an ideal freshwater quality (almost no bacteria), similar to that of the deionized water. The AC-JE fibers prove their potential for dye removal, in both adsorption and filtration. Their sterilization ability substantiates their potential in the field of water purification as they can be used as ideal absorbents based on cellulose for removing dyes and purifying wastewater.
