Trivalent lanthanides (Ln3+) doped bismuth-based inorganic compounds have attracted considerable interest as promising candidates for next-generation inorganic luminescent materials. Here, a series of K0.3Bi0.7F2.4(KBF) nanocrystalline particles with controlled morphology have been synthesized through a low-temperature aqueous-phase precipitation method. Using KBF as the host matrix, Eu3+, Tb3+, Pr3+, Nd3+, Sm3+,and Dy3+ions are introduced to obtain K0.3Bi0.7F2.4:Ln3+(KBF:Ln) nanophosphors. The as-prepared KBF:Ln nanophosphors exhibit commendable photoluminescence properties, in which multicolor emissions in a single host lattice can be obtained by doping different Ln3+ions when excited by ultraviolet light. Moreover, the morphology and photoluminescence performance of these nanophosphors remain unchanged under different soaking times in water, showing good stability in a humid environment. The proposed simple and rapid synthesis route, low-cost and nontoxic bismuth-based host matrix, and tunable luminescent colors will lead the way to access these KBF:Ln nanophosphors for appealing applications such as white LEDs and optical thermometry.

Bismuth-based fluoride nanocrystalline materials are becoming an emerging class of host matrixes for luminescent lanthanide ions (Ln3+). However, the synthesis of morphology-controlled bismuth-based fluoride nanocrystals still remains a challenging work. Herein we report an aqueous-phase self-surfactant route to synthesize the K0.3Bi0.7F2.4 (KBF) nanocrystalline particles with controllable morphologies in 1 minute at room temperature. It is found that the morphology of the prepared sample is strongly dependent on the contents of ammonium bismuth citrate and KF in the reaction system, leading to monodisperse nanocrystalline particles with uniform cubic, polyhedral and spherical shapes. By introducing Ln3+ (Ln = Tb, Eu) ions into the KBF lattice, the resultant KBF:Tb and KBF:Eu nanoscintillators exhibit fascinating ability to emit intense green and orange-red luminescence upon X-ray excitation. The detection limits of X-ray dose rate are determined to be 1.24 μGy s−1 for KBF:Tb and 0.77 μGy s−1 for KBF:Eu, respectively, which are both lower than the dose rate required for X-ray diagnostics (5.5 μGy s−1). Flexible and large-area scintillator films by incorporating the KBF:Tb and KBF:Eu nanoscintillators into PDMS demonstrate great potential for X-ray imaging applications, which enables them to be promising alternatives for single-crystal and ceramic scintillators.

Bismuth-based fluoride nanocrystalline materials are an emerging class of host matrixes for luminescent ions with promising applications in optoelectronic devices and medical diagnosis. However, rapid aqueous-phase synthesis of highly stable bismuth-based fluoride nanocrystals at low temperature (room temperature ∼ 90 °C) is still a significant challenge. Herein we report an ultrafast (1 min only) and economical aqueous method to synthesize lanthanide-doped K0.3Bi0.7F2.4 upconversion nanocrystalline particles at low temperature. The resultant materials show exceptional upconversion luminescence performance under the excitation of a 980 nm near-infrared laser. More importantly, these fluoride nanocrystalline particles show excellent stability against high temperature up to 200 °C, high excitation power density (80 W cm−2) and prolonged water soaking (60 days or more). The proposed simple synthesis route, rare-earth free fluoride matrix, commendable upconversion luminescence performance and excellent chemical and thermal stability opens the door to access these lanthanide-doped K0.3Bi0.7F2.4 upconversion nanocrystalline particles for anti-counterfeiting and other daily applications.

The study reveals that these nanoparticles exhibit highly tunable photoluminescence (PL), with distinct blue, red, and near-infrared emissions that are highly sensitive to temperature changes. For the first time, the temperature-dependent characteristics of PL emissions for optical thermometry behavior among 300–500 K for particular nanoparticles are also investigated. The temperature-dependent fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique, leveraging phonon-mediated apparent temperature-dependent coupling among Tm 3+ states, is employed to calculate the absolute sensitivity (S a ) and relative sensitivity (S r ) of particular nanoparticles. The results indicate high S a values of up to 0.0108 K −1 for sample A and 0.0017 K −1 for sample B across the given temperature range. Sample A exhibits a higher S r of 0.0122%K −1 at low temperatures, while decreasing to 0.0046%K −1 at higher temperatures, while sample B maintains a relatively consistent value over the same temperature range. These results highlight the potential of the synthesized nanoparticles as an effective optical thermometric probe. The Yb 3+ concentration directly modulates energy transfer efficiency and temperature sensitivity by influencing both the rate of energy transfer to Tm 3+ and the extent of nonradiative losses. Optimizing Yb 3+ content is thus crucial for achieving high sensitivity and stability in PL-based optical thermometry, positioning Yb 3+ /Tm 3+ co-doped K 0.3 Bi 0.7 F 2.4 nanoparticles as promising candidates for advanced noncontact temperature sensing applications.

A novel K0.3Bi0.7F2.4 upconversion (UC) matrix has been prepared successfully by a solvothermal method. K0.3Bi0.7F2.4:Yb3+/Ln3+ (Ln = Er, Ho, Tm) upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) show a corresponding excellent upconversion luminescence (UCL) under 980 nm laser irradiation. Especially, the strong near-infrared (NIR) UCL of K0.3Bi0.7F2.4:20% Yb3+/0.5% Tm3+ (abbreviated as BYT) UCNPs is suitable for deep tissue optical imaging. Moreover, the high X-ray absorption coefficient of Bi makes the as-prepared UCNPs favorable for computed tomography (CT) imaging. The citrate-coated BYT UCNPs show good biocompatibility through the MTT assay towards HeLa cells and low hemolytic properties by hemolysis assay, which could be applied for in vivo optical and CT imaging. After intravenous injection of citrate-coated BYT UCNPs for one month, blood biochemistry and histology analysis of mice suggest the UCNPs have a negligible toxicity in vivo, implying citrate-coated BYT could be employed as a safe bioprobe for NIR optical and CT dual-modal imaging.
