Bio-oil contains abundant aliphatic organics, which can be used to impregnate a biomass feedstock for increasing aliphatic content, as aliphatics are important for pore development in activation. Herein, impregnation of homologous bio-oil to spring jasmine wood (SJW) and further activation of the impregnated sample (SJW-oil) with ZnCl 2 or K 2 C 2 O 4 were conducted, aiming to explore another alternative outlet for application of bio-oil. The results showed that the impregnated bio-oil increased yield of activated carbon (AC) by 29.9 % (on SJW basis) in activation with ZnCl 2 , due to promoted condensation of organics from the impregnated bio-oil. Nevertheless, the specific surface area was reduced from 2098.5 m 2 g −1 in activation of SJW only to 1602.1 m 2 g −1 from SJW-oil, as the impregnated bio-oil suppressed infiltration of ZnCl 2 to internal structures of SJW. However, more mesopores were generated in AC-Oil-ZnCl 2 (85.9 %) than in AC-ZnCl 2 (92.5 %), originating from activation of organics in impregnated bio-oil. K 2 C 2 O 4 could easily crack organics in the impregnated bio-oil and in SJW, increasing specific surface area from 1152.2 m 2 g −1 in AC-K 2 C 2 O 4 to 1283.4 m 2 g −1 in AC-Oil-K 2 C 2 O 4 . In-situ IR characterization showed formation of additional aliphatic structures from the impregnated bio-oil and also intensified cracking reactions, favoring pore developing but diminishing AC production. The impregnated bio-oil also rendered the AC with superior performance for phenol adsorption but lowered environmental impact of the activation process.

The activation approach plays a critical role in determining the structural properties of activated carbon (AC). In this study, porous activated carbon was prepared from furfural residue through a combined physical-chemical activation using CO 2 and potassium oxalate as co-activators. The results revealed that CO 2 and K 2 C 2 O 4 had a synergistic effect that enhanced the activation efficiency. Compared to single activation, the co-activation markedly increased the specific surface area (1380 m 2 /g) of the resulting AC, although this came at the cost of a reduced solid yield. In addition, the co-activation process boosted the elimination of hydrogen and oxygen from the carbon material, thus impacting the surface functionality. The co-activated sample K 2 C 2 O 4 -CO 2 -800 exhibited superior adsorption performance for phenol, achieving a maximum removal rate of 95%, owing to its well-developed porous structure. Furthermore, it demonstrated good reusability, maintain a 74% removal rate after five cycles. These findings proposed that physical-chemical co-activation is an effective strategy for tuning the porous structure and improving the adsorption performance of activated carbon.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based polymer electrolytes are promising candidates for lithium-ion batteries due to their high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical stability window, and ease of processing. However, PVDF chain scission during cycling often leads to battery failure. This study introduces a straightforward strategy for modifying PVDF using potassium oxalate (K 2 C 2 O 4 ). The resulting composite gel polymer electrolyte (CGPEK-X) facilitates the pre-formation of LiF, which enhances lithium-ion conductivity and promotes uniform lithium deposition. Moreover, the improved mechanical integrity of the composite effectively suppresses lithium dendrite growth. When integrated into LiFePO 4 /Li cells, the optimized K 2 C 2 O 4 -doped system demonstrates stable cycling over 200 cycles at room temperature, achieving a discharge capacity of 120.3 mAh g −1 at 1°C. This work presents a novel approach to engineering PVDF-based electrolytes with balanced mechanical and electrochemical properties, offering valuable insights for the development of high-performance lithium-polymer batteries.

Pre-carbonization plus activation is commonly used for activation of biomass. Nonetheless, pre-carbonization via pyrolysis removes a significant portion of aliphatic structures, diminishing mass yield of resulting activated carbon (AC) from activation. In this study, pyrolysis-condensation (pyro-condensation) was proposed as a method for pre-carbonization prior to activation of peach, cellulose, and lignin with K 2 C 2 O 4 , which could achieve recycled polymerization of volatiles to maximize mass yield of biochar and correspondingly AC. The results confirmed double or even triple of biochar yields with peach or cellulose via pyro-condensation, attributed to volatile recycling and carbon retention via aliphatic polymerization. The mass yields of AC from subsequent activation were also tripled with cellulose and doubled with lignin when compared with the pyrolysis-activation route. Moreover, pyro-condensation plus activation enhanced specific surface area of AC (i.e. 1243.6 versus 1048.1 m 2 g −1 from pyrolysis-activation route with peach), abundance of mesoporous structures (12.8% versus 3.2% with cellulose) and enlarged pore size (1.9 versus 1.6 nm with cellulose). The in-situ IR characterization confirmed abundant aliphatic structures in form of −C- H, –OH, C O and C-O- C in the biochar from pyro-condensation, which were formed from re-polymerization of volatiles and filled voids of biochar, rendering smooth surface. The AC from pyro-condensation pretreatment exhibited superior phenol adsorption performance (maximum capacity: 426.3 mg/g, 49.5% higher than the counterpart with pyrolysis pretreatment) and excellent reusability. The abundant aliphatic components induced more intense cracking in the followed activation, forming AC of more developed pores, higher thermal stability, higher degree of aromatization and lower overall impacts on environment.

Currently, the selection of iron valence states in composite-modified magnetic biochar prepared by co-pyrolysis exhibits a high degree of blindness. Therefore, this study compares the performance of biochar preparation via co-pyrolysis of three different iron valences (Fe 2 + , Fe 3+ , and Fe 6+ ) and potassium oxalate (K 2 C 2 O 4 ) composite modification for tetracycline (TC) removal. The results indicate that the co-activation of potassium oxalate with different iron valences led to the formation of magnetic biochar with varying elemental contents, morphologies, and structures. Batch adsorption experiments demonstrate that KF3-BC has a high tetracycline removal rate over a wide pH range (3 – 11) and at high coexisting ion concentrations (1 – 100 mmol/L). Furthermore, experiments with synthetic swine wastewater in different matrices, the adsorption capacity of KF3-BC for TC (at a concentration of 100 mg/L) exceeds 81.09 mg/g. Additionally, under optimal conditions of 30 °C and pH = 5, the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity (Q max ) for TC is as follows: KF3-BC (236.91 mg/g) > KF6-BC (169.42 mg/g) > KF2-BC (51.34 mg/g) > BC (38.41 mg/g). The adsorption processes of KF2-BC, KF3-BC, and KF6-BC all conform to the Pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models, implying that TC adsorption occurs at the multilayer molecular adsorption on heterogeneous surfaces, primarily driven by chemisorption. The primary adsorption mechanism between KF-BCs and TC molecules is the π–π EDA interactions. Additionally, hydrogen bonding, cation–π complexation, electrostatic interactions, and pore filling also contribute to the adsorption process. This study can assist in selecting the optimal iron source and chemical activator for composite modification of biochar for the adsorption of TC in wastewater.
