Magnetic porous biochars (MC HCl , MC HAc ) with nanostructure on surfaces were prepared from penicillin fermentation dregs by pyrolysis with K 2 FeO 4 activation and used in penicillin adsorption. MC HCl and MC HAc had high BET surface areas of 672 and 735 m 2 /g, respectively; mainly be attributed to the activation of K 2 FeO 4 as well as acid pickling. Saturation magnetizations of MC HCl and MC HAc were 75.29 and 42.45 emu/g, respectively; the magnetism was mainly derived from the Fe 3 O 4 and Fe 3 C in magnetic biochars. MC HCl had nano sticks of ~ 80 nm and MC HAc had petal-like slice of ~ 30 nm on surfaces. The maximum adsorption capacities of penicillin on MC HCl and MC HAc were 196 and 322 mg/g at 308 K, respectively. The adsorptions of penicillin on MC HCl and MC HAc were consistent with pseudo primary kinetics and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model, and thermodynamic analysis indicated that the adsorption mechanism included physical and chemical adsorption.

In the penicillin fermentation production industry, a large amount of waste bacterial residue is generated annually, posing significant potential risks to the environment. Currently, the most common method of disposal, incineration, wastes a considerable amount of biomass resources. This study utilizes penicillin fermentation bacterial residue as the raw material to prepare two types of high-performance magnetic biochar activated by KOH/K 2 FeO 4 (K 2 FeO 4 -BC, KOH/K 2 FeO 4 -BC) for the adsorption of ofloxacin. The results indicate that the addition of KOH effectively improves the biochar’s adsorption performance for ofloxacin. The BET specific surface areas of the two materials are 777.88 m 2 ·g −1 and 846.16 m 2 ·g −1 , respectively. The average mesopore diameter of KOH/K 2 FeO 4 -BC is 5.34 nm, and the mesopore volume accounts for over 99.5% of the total pore volume. At 298K, the saturated adsorption capacity of KOH/K 2 FeO 4 -BC for ofloxacin is 289.86 mg·g −1 . The experiment demonstrates that the adsorption behavior of ofloxacin on KOH/K 2 FeO 4 -BC is more consistent with the Freundlich model and the second-order kinetic model. KOH/K 2 FeO 4 -BC achieves rapid removal of ofloxacin, with the adsorption removal effect reaching over 95% of adsorption saturation within 30 min. Repeated use experiments show that after five cycles, KOH/K 2 FeO 4 -BC retains 56.71% of its initial adsorption performance. Graphical abstract
