Synthesis and ciprofloxacin adsorption of Gum Ghatti /Konjac Glucomannan/Zif-8 composite aerogel

Dan Yang,Meng Du,Zia-ud Din,Shikui Yang,Lei Chen,Jie Cai,Jie Pang,Xi Chen,Wenping Ding

The Gum Ghatti (GG)/Konjac Glucomannan (KGM)/zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) composite aerogels (GKZ) were synthesized by the sol-gel method and the vacuum freeze-drying method for effective removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) from contaminated water. The results showed that the addition of different concentrations (0, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 wt%) of GG could promote homogeneity but weakened the molecular interaction of the aerogel system without water. Remarkably, the ZIF-8 maintained the crystal structure, as well as its dispersion on the surface of aerogel, was significantly improved. Additionally, it was also found that the incorporation of moderate GG was favored regarding CIP adsorption, and GKZ with 0.6 % GG (GKZ0.6) exhibited the highest adsorption capability for CIP around 1035.4 mg/g. Besides, the effects of various ions, ionic strength , and pH on CIP adsorption were also investigated, which provided the reference for guiding the utilization of GKZ0.6. Furthermore, at fewer cycles, the adsorption efficiency of GKZ0.6 on CIP showed less loss. These features revealed that the GKZ composite aerogels might be a promising adsorbent for CIP removal from water.

The influence of deacetylation degree of konjac glucomannan on rheological and gel properties of konjac glucomannan/κ-carrageenan mixed system

Di Wu,Simin Yu,Hongshan Liang,Chen He,Jing Li,Bin Li

The rheological and textural properties of κ-carrageenan (CAR) and konjac glucomannan (KGM) with definite deacetylation degree (DD) mixed system in the presence of potassium chloride (KCl) were investigated to study the influence of deacetylation degree on KGM, CAR and KCl mixed system. The results revealed that the zero-shear viscosities of the mixed sol system increased firstly and then decreased with the gradual increase of DD. Besides, the sols had the capability of being transformed into irreversible gel by heating them at 80 °C for 30 min and then cooling to room temperature. The DD of KGM did have impacts on the characteristics of the ensuing hydrogels. That is, the mixed gels showed an initial increase and ensuing decrease in gel strength over DD, reaching the maximum with a DD of 21.07%. Overall, by controlling the deacetylation degree of KGM, the gel behaviors of the mixed system can be regulated.

Konjac Glucomannan Derived Carbon Aerogels for Multifunctional Applications

Jie Lian,Jiwei Li,Liang Wang,Ru Cheng,Xiuquan Tian,Xue Li,Jian Zhou,Tao Duan,Wenkun Zhu

Environmental and energy issues have always been a hot topic of global research. Oil leakage has caused great damage to the environment, affecting a wide area and it is difficult to clean up. In most cases, carbon-based adsorbents are typically utilized to remove oil spills because of their economic benefits and high adsorbent efficiency. At the same time, its excellent material properties can also be used for the preparation of supercapacitors. In this paper, the carbon aerogels were prepared by the one-step method. The prepared materials endowed a 3D network structure with a huge number of micropores and mesoporous, and the material is light-weight, stable, hydrophobic and has affinity for oil (17.02 g/g) to the KGM carbon aerogel. Through the physic-chemical characterization, the KGM carbon aerogel shows specific surface area is 689 m 2 /g, high water contact angle (136.64 ∘ ) and excellent reusability (more than 15 cycle times). In addition, we also discussed the electrochemical properties of the material and obtained the specific electrical capacity of 139 F/g under the condition of 1 A/g.

Physicochemical Properties of Cassava Starch-Konjac Glucomannan Composites

Yawei Liu,Bing Xu,Fei An,Jie Liu

Cross-linked cassava starch-konjac glucomannan composite (CCS-KGM), native cassava starch-sodium trimetaphosphate-konjac glucomannan composite (NCS-STMP-KGM), and cross-linked cassava starch-sodium trimetaphosphate-konjac glucomannan composite (CCS-STMP-KGM) are prepared to study the effect of STMP and KGM on the native cassava starch and cross-linked cassava starch. A small amount of KGM adheres to the surface of cassava starch granules in the three composites. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicate that cross-links form in the cross-linked cassava starch and three composites. The X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the crystallization type of native cassava starch modified by STMP and KGM remains unchanged (A-type). The mean particle size of cross-linked cassava starch and the three composites are larger than that of native cassava starch. STMP and KGM decrease the swelling power and water loss rate of native cassava starch. Dynamic rheological results suggest that STMP and KGM increase storage modulus and loss modulus of native cassava starch gel. It provides the possibility for both STMP and KGM to improve the gel properties of native cassava starch rather than cross-linked reaction, and also expands the application field of KGM with low cost.

Partial removal of acetyl groups in konjac glucomannan significantly improved the rheological properties and texture of konjac glucomannan and κ-carrageenan blends

Yan Hu,Jing Tian,Jian Zou,Xiaoqing Yuan,Jing Li,Hongshan Liang,Fuchao Zhan,Bin Li

The main aim of the current study was to research the effect of the degree of konjac deacetylation on the rheological and textural properties of konjac glucomannan (KGM) and κ-carrageenan blends. A series of deacetylated konjac glucomannan (Da-KGM) with different degrees of deacetylation (0, 20.35%, 35.62%, 57.19%, and 74.01%) was prepared by a heterogeneous deacetylation method. The rheological and textural properties of mixed sols and gels of Da-KGM with different degrees of deacetylation and κ-carrageenan were determined. The results showed that the viscosities of mixed sols of Da-KGM and κ-carrageenan decreased with increasing degree of deacetylation. The partial removal of acetyl groups from konjac glucomannan could significantly improve the hardness and springiness of mixed gels of KGM and κ-carrageenan. Meanwhile, decreasing the acetyl content could decrease the syneresis of mixed gels. By regulating the deacetylation degree of konjac, gels with high gel strength could be prepared, which provides a new idea for the production of high-strength gelatin food.

An innovative konjac glucomannan/κ-carrageenan mixed tensile gel

Di Wu,Simin Yu,Hongshan Liang,Mohamed Eid,Bin Li,Jing Li,Jin Mao

BACKGROUND Konjac glucomannan (KGM) showed a synergistic interaction with κ-carrageenan (CAR), which led to the formation of a promising compound hydrocolloid gel in the food field (such as jelly). Nevertheless, the mixed gels formed by adding KGM to CAR still displayed defects in gel strength and syneresis, and would hardly meet the quality requirements of some gel foods. However, deacetylated KGM and maltodextrin (MD) have always been used in gel foods and affect their viscosity and rheological properties. RESULTS In our paper, different amounts of MD were first used to alter the textural properties, and the results showed that both tensile strength and elongation exhibited first an increasing and then a decreasing trend with the increasing MD proportion and achieved a maximum at a final maltodextrin proportion of 4 g kg −1 in the KGM/CAR/MD system. Based on the above results, we further explored the effects of deacetylation degree of KGM on the gel properties of mixed gel system. The results revealed that, compared to the native KGM, the partial deacetylated KGM was capable of significantly improving the tensile strength and elongation of KGM/CAR mixed gel. CONCLUSION Our study found that the appropriate addition of MD (0.4%) and DKGM were able to alter the tensile properties of KGM/CAR mixed gel, with potential to meet the needs of consumers and further design innovative tensile gel products in the soft gel industry. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry

Konjac glucomannan-based nanofibrous aerogel for high-strength thermal superinsulation

Wenxiao Liu,Yuxun Zhou,Di Liu,Jinbin Wang,Zhifang Sun

Amid global efforts toward energy conservation and sustainable development, renewable and eco-friendly thermal insulation materials are critically needed. This study presents konjac glucomannan (KGM) based aerogels—featuring integrated nanofibrous and nanoporous architectures—fabricated via a stepwise polarity-induced assembly strategy coupled with CO₂ supercritical drying. By modulating the polarity of organic solvents, this method controls the network packing and chain entanglement in KGM hydrogels during solvent exchange, thereby preserving their volumetric stability and structural integrity after CO₂ supercritical drying. The resulting aerogel achieves ultralow density (0.0348 g cm −3 ), high specific surface area (273 m 2  g −1 ), superior thermal insulation (λ = 0.0212 W m −1  K −1 ), and notable mechanical strength under tension and compression. These attributes establish KGM-based aerogels as sustainable, biodegradable candidates for advanced thermal energy management systems, demonstrating exceptional potential as superinsulating materials.

Preparation and characterization of Konjac glucomannan-based cation exchange resin

B. Zhou,Y. Wang,B. Li,J. Li,G.Y. Lv,T. Mei,B. Cui,J.S. Fan

The granular Konjac glucomannan-based cation exchange resin with different pore diameters was synthesized by a low-cost way. The pore diameters could be controlled subtly by regulating the ratio of benign solvent (water) and expansion inhibitor (ethanol). The resin was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Its physical parameters were evaluated as well. The results indicated that the cross-linking reaction of Konjac glucomannan phosphate (KGMP) made the surface uneven and brought out a little fold-like structure that was beneficial to the water retention capacity and resin exchange capacity.

Konjac glucomannan films with quasi-pasteurization function for tangerines preservation

Yongsheng Ni,Jingyao Wang,Jing Sun,Jianlong Wang

This study presents functional KCNGO films obtained by incorporating graphite carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) and graphene oxide (GO) into the konjac glucomannan (KGM) matrix. The concept of quasi-pasteurization proposed in current work refers to the shorter time needed and lower sterilization temperature used than that of the conventional pasteurization . The films had a compact microstructure formed by the hydrogen bond interactions, as revealed by morphology characterization, FTIR and rheological analysis. It also had excellent hydrophobicity, thermal stability, mechanical properties and water vapor barrier ability. Notably, this film exhibited potent bactericidal activity against foodborne pathogens based on functions of fast heating and instantaneous low temperature bactericidal (4 min, 55 ± 1 °C). The quasi-pasteurization efficacy and mechanism of films were explored. Moreover, this film was safe and can keep the “fresh-like” characteristics of the tangerines for 24 days. Therefore, a quasi-pasteurization strategy is provided in food preservation field.

Preparation and sustainable release of modified konjac glucomannan/chitosan nanospheres

Congjiao Shi,Pei Zhu,Na Chen,Xiaozhou Ye,Yun Wang,Shaobo Xiao

Biodegradable and biocompatible polymer nanospheres are useful materials for controlled drug delivery. In the present study, novel composite nanospheres were prepared from carboxymethyl konjac glucomannan (CKGM) and 2-hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) as a vaccine delivery vehicle by electrostatic complexation in a neutral aqueous solution without the use of chemical crosslinkers. By altering the CKGM and HACC concentrations, the average CKGM/HACC particle size could be tuned from approximately 600   nm to 1460   nm and the zeta potential from 39   mV to 50   mV. Furthermore, using ovalbumin (OVA) as a model molecule for vaccines, various parameters were determined to affect the CKGM/HACC nanosphere encapsulation efficiency and in vitro controlled release properties. Under optimum conditions, the OVA encapsulation efficiency of CKGM/HACC nanospheres was 71.8%, while sustained and continuous in vitro OVA release over a period of more than 24   h was observed. Therefore, CKGM/HACC nanospheres are novel drug delivery carriers with great potential for medical applications.

Ultrastable Emulsion Stabilized by the Konjac Glucomannan–Xanthan Gum Complex

Qian Han,Huili Wang,Tongxin Zhou,Yantao Wang,Zhenpeng Shen,Dehai Yu,Xiaona Liu,Wenxia Liu,Wenzhi Lv

Surfactant-free emulsions are currently gaining increased interest due to their technofunctional, health-promoting, economic, biocompatible, and sustainable characteristics. Herein, we report an ultrastable, surfactant-free emulsion stabilized by the konjac glucomannan (KGM)–xanthan gum (XG) complex. The results suggested that KGM–XG tended to adsorb onto the oil/water interface, causing a reduction in interfacial tension. The emulsion droplets were less than 1 μm in diameter and had a narrow size distribution. Using laser confocal microscopy and cryo-SEM, it was observed that KGM–XG generated a compact film on the surface of emulsion droplets while simultaneously constructing a three-dimensional network in the continuous phase. Both of these factors contributed to the stability of the emulsion. The present study presents a straightforward approach for producing highly stable emulsions stabilized by polysaccharides. These emulsions can be effectively utilized to enhance the water resistance of cellulose paper, which is extensively employed in the packaging industry.

Construction and mechanism of konjac glucomannan-based laminated flexible sensor hydrogel

Junying Wu,Di Zhang,Xianrui Chen,Xiangyun Sun,Jun Liao,Jie Pang,Shuyi Wu

Flexible hydrogel-based sensors show great potential but face challenges in dehydration for long-term storage and customization for various deformation measurements. This work reports a strategy for preparing hydrogel sensors by creating dry sensor films with different properties, which are rehydrated and laminated for specific applications. A polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) nanofiber membrane, produced via microfluidic bubble spinning and combined with conductive MXene, achieved a Young's modulus of 46.59 MPa. A biomass polysaccharide hydrogel made from konjac glucomannan, xanthan gum, and sodium alginate (SA) encapsulated the PHA/MXene membrane. The Young's modulus and load testing of the hydrogel sensors can be adjusted by varying SA concentration. The gel-encapsulated films can be dried for long-term preservation. For applications, the dried layers with different SA concentrations were rehydrated and assembled according to load requirements. Crosslinking between Ca 2+ ions and SA's carboxyl groups ensures stable interlayer bonding. Numerical simulations showed that the laminated sensor, combining soft and hard layers, responds well to various external forces. The laminated sensor captured multiple electrical signals to differentiate shear and compressive loads, which is a challenge for traditional flexible devices. This study presents a customizable laminated sensor that can be tailored to specific measurement ranges, enhancing hydrogel-based sensing technologies.
