A super simple ratiometric fluorescence nanosensor has been fabricated by controlling the ligands of CdZnTe quantum dots (QDs), allowing the sensitive and visual detection of silver ions (Ag+). The green-emitting L-cysteine-protected CdZnTe QDs (Lcys-CdZnTe QDs) had a specific response to Ag+ and were used as the reporting probe, while the red-emitting N-acetyl-L-cysteine-protected CdZnTe QDs (NAC-CdZnTe QDs) showed no obvious response to all tested metal ions and were selected as the reference probe. Simply mixing them without any encapsulated synthesis ultimately produced a time-saving, low-cost detection method, allowing the sensitive and visual detection of Ag+ in samples. The proposed nanosensor exhibited a linear range of 0.5–4.0 μM along with a detection limit of 0.17 μM, and has been successfully applied in real tap water and lake water samples. This nanosensor also showed obvious color changes in the detection process and has potential in visual semi-quantitative detection. Our approach may provide a general and feasible strategy for designing ratiometric fluorescence nanosensors, which will attract a wide range of interest in sensing-related fields.

N -Acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) and L-cysteine (Cys) capped Mn doped ZnS quantum dots (NAC-Mn/ZnS QDs and Cys-Mn/ZnS QDs) are firstly prepared by hydrothermal methods . These QDs display strong phosphorescence emission peaks at 583 and 580 nm upon excitation at 315 and 306 nm, respectively. Since their room-temperature phosphorescence is efficiently quenched by L-ascorbic acid (AA), they have been employed as phosphorescence probes for detecting AA. The linear working ranges are 2.5–37.5 and 2.5–47.5 µM and the limits of detection are 0.72 and 1.38 µM for NAC-Mn/ZnS QDs and Cys-Mn/ZnS QDs, respectively. The possible quenching mechanisms have been discussed in detail. The QDs probes are highly selective to AA over other common ions, amino acids , glucose and bovine serum album. Finally, they have been applied successfully for detection of AA in human urine samples with satisfactory results. The recoveries are 98–104%. Our work provides a simple and convenient phosphorescence method to determine AA in real samples.

The particular scale structure and mechanical properties of wool fiber make its associated fabrics prone to felting, seriously affecting the service life of wool products. Although the existing Chlorine–Hercosett treatment has a remarkable effect, it can lead to environmental pollution. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop an environmentally friendly and effective shrink-proof finishing technology. For this study, L-cysteine was mixed with protease to form a treatment solution system for shrink-proof finishing of wool fibers. The reduction performance of L-cysteine and its effect on wool were compared with those of other reagents, demonstrating that L-cysteine has an obvious reduction and destruction effect on the wool scale layer. Based on this, L-cysteine and protease 16L were mixed in a certain proportion to prepare an L-cysteine/protease treatment solution system (L/PTSS). The shrink-proof finishing of a wool top was carried out by the continuous multiple-padding method, and the processing parameters were optimized using the response surface method. The results indicated that when the concentrations of L-cysteine and protease 16L were 9 g/L and 1 g/L, respectively, the wool was padded five times at 50 °C, and each immersion time was 30 s, the felt ball density of the treated wool reduced from 135.86 kg/m3to 48.65 kg/m3. The structure and properties of the treated wool were also characterized using SEM, TG, and tensile strength tests, which indicated that the fiber scale structure was stripped evenly. Meanwhile, the treated fibers still retained adequate thermal and mechanical properties, indicating suitable application value. XPS, FT-IR, Raman, UV absorbance, and other test results revealed the reaction mechanism of L/PTSS with the wool fibers. After L-cysteine rapidly reduced the disulfide bonds in wool, protease can hydrolyze peptide chains more effectively, causing the scale layer to gradually peel off. Compared with the chlorination method and other protease shrink-proof technologies, L/PTSS can achieve the finishing effect on wool rapidly and effectively, without causing excessive pollution to the environment. The conclusions of this study provide a foundation for the development and industrial application of biological enzyme shrink-proof finishing technology.Keywords:wool;shrink-proof finishing;protease;L-cysteine

In this research, a new kind of anti-fouling ultrafiltration (UF) composite membrane was fabricated by decorating poly (vinyl alcohol) on both the surface and cavities of a commercialized polyethylene (PE) separator. Zwitterionic l -cysteine was further tethered onto the composite membrane by “thiol–ene” click chemistry for pursuing enhanced anti-fouling properties. Results of XPS and FTIR verified the occurrence of each reaction procedure. Identified by water contact angle, SEM and AFM analysis, the composite membrane manifested superior hydrophilicity, smoother surface and better-distributed porosity. The permeability and anti-fouling property of the composite membranes and conventional polysulfone (PSf) membranes were tested by a crossflow filtration instrument. Results suggested that the composite membranes behave remarkable capacity in retaining BSA (increasing from the original rejecting ratio of 39.1% to the maximum 98.0%) and identical water flux to the PSf membrane. In addition, results of the fouling experiment revealed the composite membranes suffer much less flux decline than PSf membranes; and grafting zwitterionic l -cysteine can enhance the inhibition against foulants’ adhesion on the composite membrane, which guarantees favorable performances for long-term operation in BSA feed water. This study may render consideration on exploiting low-cost, sustainable UF membranes, and broadening the additional application of PE separators.

Many diseases in the human body are related to the level of L-cysteine. Therefore, it is crucial to establish an efficient, simple and sensitive platform for L-cysteine detection. In this work, we synthesized platinum palladium bimetallic nanoparticles (Van-Ptm/PdnNPs) using vancomycin hydrochloride (Van) as a stabilizer, which exhibited high oxidase-like catalytic activity. In addition, the catalytic kinetics of the Van-Pt1/Pd1NPs followed the typical Michaelis–Menten equation, exhibiting a strong affinity for 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine substrates. More importantly, we developed a simple and effective strategy for the sensitive colorimetric detection of L-cysteine using biocompatible Van-Pt1/Pd1NPs. The detection limit was low, at 0.07 μM, which was lower than the values for many previously reported enzyme-like detection systems. The colorimetric method of the L-cysteine assay had good selectivity. The established method for the detection of L-cysteine showed promise for biomedical analysis.Keywords:bimetallic;nanozymes;colorimetric;L-cysteine;detection

Nickel oxide (NiO) nanozyme, as an excellent oxidase mimic, have been widely used in fluorescence biological detection, water pollutant analysis, food safety and cell imaging. However, to fully achieve these applications, it is still a great challenge to regulate its crystalline micro/nanostructure and composites to achieve high enzyme activity and high specific surface area. Here, we applied a very simple thermal annealing treatment to restructure the calcined precursor of NiO. Importantly, it was found that oxygen vacancy (OV) concentration of the targeted NiO nanozyme is significantly increased while the annealing atmosphere is argon rather than air. Moreover, the as-prepared novel NiO sample (NiO-OV) nanosheets achieved ca. 2-fold enhancement in specific surface area. It is believed that the higher OV concentration and the larger specific surface area will increase the enzyme activity by accelerating electron transfer rate and increasing catalytic interfaces. The significant improvement of enzyme activity of NiO-OV was verified by the fluorescence "turn-on" experiment of Amplex red (AR). Finally, using NiO-OV/AR system, we constructed a highly sensitive enzyme sensor on L-Cys with a detection limit of 37.8 nM. It also displayed an excellent specificity for ten typical amino acid interferences.

Cefazolin (CFZ) is widely present in the wastewater treatment effluents and in receiving waters and has caused severe impacts to the ecosystem. CFZ degradation by photocatalysis has attracted increasing attention due to its eco-friendly features. Herein, we presented a green synthesis strategy for a highly active BiOBr photocatalyst for CFZ removal with L -cysteine as a directing agent, and the role of thiol in cysteine for facets control and morphology regulation was discussed. We found that the photoactivity of cysteine-induced BiOBr nanosheet was much higher than those prepared by using arginine and glycine as directing agent. Further experiments showed that the cysteine preferentially coordinated Bi 3+ with thiol rather than carboxyl. The strong interactions of thiol group with the external surface of the BiOBr crystals stabilize the small crystals that have high surface energy without the cysteine. Such a chemical environment favors forming BiOBr crystalline with small size of high surface area and oriented growth in [110] direction, which facilitates the photogenerated electron-hole separation to achieve significantly promoted photocatalytic activity. Moreover, the cysteine-directed BiOBr nanosheets displayed good photoreactivity to more pollutants (i.e. rhodamine B, cefradine and cefoperazone sodium) and excellent reusability as verified via seven consecutive recycle experiments. The proper photocatalyst dosage (0.4 g/L), relatively acidic water environment (pH 3.4) and high temperature (35 °C) would be beneficial to CFZ photodegrdation by BiOBr. Also, the CFZ photodegradation mechanism and degradation pathway were also proposed by combining radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) test with LC-MS analysis in the photocatalytic process.

Abstract The concentration of L-cysteine (Cys) and glutathione (GSH) is closely related to the critical risk of various diseases. In our study, a new rapid method for the determination of Cys and GSH in water and urine samples has been developed using a fluorescent probe technique, which was based on crystal violet (CV)-functionalized CdTe quantum dots (QDs). The original QDs emitted fluorescence light, which was turned off upon adding CV. This conjugation of CV and QDs could be attributed to electrostatic interaction between COO − of mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) on the surface of QDs and N + of CV in aqueous solution. In addition, Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) also occurred between CdTe QDs and CV. After adding Cys or GSH to the solution, Cys or GSH exhibited a stronger binding preference toward Cd 2+ than Cd 2+ -MPA, which disturbed the interaction between MPA and QDs. Thus, most MPA was able to be separated from the surface of QDs because of the participation of Cys or GSH. Then, the fluorescence intensity of the CdTe QDs was enhanced. Good linear relationships were obtained in the range of 0.02–40 μg mL −1 and 0.02–50 μg mL −1 , and the detection limits were calculated as 10.5 ng mL −1 and 8.2 ng mL −1 , for Cys and GSH, respectively. In addition, the concentrations of biological thiols in water and urine samples were determined by the standard addition method using Cys as the standard; the quantitative recoveries were in the range of 97.3–105.8%, and relative standard deviations (RSDs) ranged from 2.5 to 3.7%. The method had several unique properties, such as simplicity, lower cost, high sensitivity, and environmental acceptability.

Herein, a series of CuS particles anchored three-dimensional ordered macroporous TiO 2 (CuS/3DOM-TiO 2 ) composites were fabricated by a biocompatible and environmental-friendly biomolecule-assisted route. For the first time in the macroporous 3DOM-TiO 2 , L-cysteine acted as multiple roles including sulfur source and chelating agent for anchoring of CuS particles. During the regulation by Cu/Ti molar ratios from 0.3 to 2, the average size of CuS particle which anchored on inner surface of 3DOM-TiO 2 was well-controlled from about 50 to 20 nm. The photocatalytic activities were investigated by visible-light degradation of methylene blue (MB). The highest activity of CuS/3DOM-TiO 2 was emerged when Cu/Ti equaled to 1. This optimized CuS/3DOM-TiO 2 -1 reached 99% in 180 min, which was 60% higher than that of pure TiO 2 . After four cycles, the photocatalytic activity of CuS/3DOM-TiO 2 retains more than 80% of its original performance. L-cysteine highly promoted the adhesion between CuS and TiO 2 which provided good cycling ability.

L-cysteine, a bio-based modifier with multiple functional groups (thiol, amino, and carboxyl), holds promise for polymer modification. However, its tendency to agglomerate and poor solubility in nonpolar polymers limits its effectiveness. In this study, 1,2-polybutadiene (1,2-PB) was intercalated within MXene layers to enhance L-cysteine dispersibility. The intercalation allowed nanoscale distribution of 1,2-PB within MXene sheets, while interactions between MXene's hydroxyl groups and L-cysteine's polar groups promoted uniform dispersion in the rubber matrix. Compared with physical blending, the grafting degree of L-cysteine is higher, thereby more effectively restricting the movement of molecular chains, which leads to an increase in the effective damping temperature by over 7°C. Additionally, due to the ionic interactions between the functional groups, the resulting composite exhibits favorable dielectric performance, with the dielectric constant increasing from 2.5 to 3.2. Experimental results demonstrate that the synergistic effect between MXene and L-cysteine improves both the damping and dielectric properties of the resulting composites. This study presents a novel approach using two-dimensional nanosheets and bio-based thiols for modifying polybutadiene, offering a potential path for high-performance functional materials. Highlights In-situ polymerization enhances MXene distribution in the matrix. Grafting degree of L-cysteine increases with MXene incorporation. Well-dispersed MXene reduces L-cysteine aggregation, enhancing mechanical strength. Effective damping temperature rises by over 7°C with MXene and L-cysteine. Dielectric constant of composites increases from 2.5 to 3.2.

An “Off–On” approach for highly sensitive and selective detection of mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) and l -cysteine ( l -Cys) was demonstrated with the use of water-soluble carbon dots (CDs) as novel fluorescent probe. In this present sensing system, Hg 2+ cations can efficiently coordinate onto the surface of CDs by means of electrostatic interactions and remarkably quench the fluorescence signal of CDs as a result of the fluorescence charge transfer (turn-off). In addition, the resulting CDs-Hg 2+ system was observed to be sensitive to l -Cys due to the ability of l -Cys to coordinate with Hg 2+ and the formation of strong Hg 2+ -SR bond. When l -Cys was added, Hg 2+ combined with l -Cys rather than with CDs resulting in the remove of Hg 2+ from the surface of CDs and shielding of fluorescence quenching, and thus, a significant fluorescence restore of CDs was observed (turn-on). Under the optimized conditions, good linearity for detecting Hg 2+ was attained over the concentration range from 2 to 22 μM with a detection limit of 0.017 μM, while the concentrations of l -Cys ranging from 2 to 20 μM exhibited a linear relationship with the relative fluorescence intensity with a correlation coefficient of R 2 = 0.99329. Moreover, this CDs-based sensor was successfully applied for visual identification and quantitation of Hg 2+ and l -Cys in real water sample and fluorescence imaging of NIH-3T3 cells with satisfying resolution.

We constructed a smartphone-integrated optosensor with inexpensive, reversible, environmental friendly, and rapid adsorption to detect Cu(II) and L-cysteine (L-Cys). The key part of this study was to prepare a red-to-blue colorimetric probe from herbaceous andrographis paniculata using one-pot polymerization at room temperature. When Cu(II) existed, the red fluorescence on the surface of the core–shell probe was quenched, while the blue fluorescence of the core did not respond, because the colorimetric probe interacted with the Cu(II) on the surface of red CDs. After L-Cys added, it interacted with the Cu(II) to strip it from the surface of red CDs, resulting in the recovery of fluorescence response. Under optimal conditions, the detection limits of this method for Cu(II) and L-Cys were 71 nM and 12 nM, respectively. Further, the red-to-blue colorimetric probe was integrated into smartphone with a software application to convert fluorescent color images into specific red (R), green (G), and blue (B) values. The spiked recovery of Cu(II) and L-Cys in lake water was verified the feasibility of the developed optosensors with a recovery of 98.2–101.6 % and 103.3–121.6 %. This method for detecting Cu(II) and L-Cys can not only recognize metal ions from actual samples, but also effectively protect CDs from quenching and restore fluorescence.
