In this work, the solid electrolyte of Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 (LAGP) is used to suppress polysulfides shuttling in Li–S cells. Firstly, the H-type visible cell is assembled by using a LAGP glass ceramic plate and normal poly-propylene (PP) separator. It is demonstrated that the LAGP glass ceramic plate is quite effective in shutting-down the migration of polysulfide ions and improving the utilization ratio of the sulfur cathode. However, in the commercial production of Li–S batteries it is not possible to use the LAGP glass ceramic plate as a membrane due to its brittle characteristics. Herein, the LAGP modified separator has been prepared by a simple casting procedure and applied in Li–S cells. The Li-ion conductivity of the LAGP modified separator is 6.280 × 10−4 S cm−1 at room temperature. The Li-ion transference number and the Gurley value of the modified separator show that the diffusion of the polysulfide anions can be suppressed effectively. The discharge capacity of the Li–S cell with the modified separator at the 50th cycle can reach 770.1 mA h g−1, while that of the Li–S cell with the routine PP separator is only 658.4 mA h g−1 at the 50th cycle. The superior utilization of sulfur in the Li–S cells indicates that using the LAGP modified separator is a viable way to overcome the shuttling problem for practical Li–S batteries.

The interface compatibility lies in the heart of present investigations on solid-state batteries, now facing significant challenges in practical use. The non-coherent interface structure with the underlying complex electrochemical processes evolves dynamically to pregnant the unfriend seeds to degrade the battery performance. Therefore, interface engineering (or control) in solid-state batteries gives birth to a new theme as ‘the interface is equal to the battery’. In this context, a facile but robust technique is proposed here by smoothing the Li 1.5 Al 0.5 Ge 1.5 P 3 O 12 (LAGP) ceramic pellet with a mirror-like surface, which is found operational in running a solid battery in unprecedentedly a thousand cycles with capacity retention of 80% at 0.5C, 50 °C. Such an unconventional operation is, as a matter of fact, largely decreasing the physically interface contact but proved powerful in guiding the Li-ion homogeneous deposition. Moreover, the self-generated LiF involved interphase layer works efficiently to dynamically balance structural and electrochemical stabilities, where the LiF is introduced by the in-situ polymerization of tiny liquid electrolytes. Hence, the profound results draw the incompatible interface issues forth to the component adjustment of interphases, namely in search for rational descriptions to connect the solid-state electrolyte and electrodes, which probably holds the key to unlocking the high energy density solid-state batteries.

All-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) have attracted intensive research attention since their incomparable energy density and the further advance of ASSLMBs is severely dependent on the development of solid electrolytes. Unfortunately, as one of the most studied solid electrolytes, the practical applications of (NASICON)-type Li 1.5 Al 0.5 Ge 0.5 P 3 O 12 (LAGP) electrolyte is hindered by not only its inferior interfacial contact with electrodes but also its undesirable instability toward Li metal anodes. In this work, a bifunctional in situ formed poly(vinylene carbonate) (PVCA)-based buffer layer is introduced between the LAGP electrolyte and the metallic Li anode to improve interface compatibility and the electrolyte stability. The improved interface contact between LAGP and electrodes and the enhanced stability of LAGP enable ASSLMBs with excellent electrochemical performance. The Li/LAGP/Li symmetric cell with the PVCA-based interlayer can maintain a low overpotential of 80 mV for 800 h at 0.05 mA cm –2 . Inspiringly, the as-assembled ASSLMBs with LiFePO 4 as the cathode also present excellent cyclic stability with a high initial discharge capacity of 150 mAh g –1 at 0.5 C and superior capacity retention of 96% after 200 cycles.

NASICON-structured solid-state electrolyte, namely Li 1.5 Al 0.5 Ge 1.5 (PO 4 ) 3 (LAGP) possesses high ionic conductivity and good compatibility with lithium metal that make it an ideal electrolyte for next-generation lithium battery. However, high interfacial impedance and possible dendrite limit its practical applications. To reduce interfacial impedance, herein, surface texturing on the LAGP is conducted using a femtosecond laser, and further wetted by ionic liquids. The femtosecond laser-modified surface can effectively increase wettability and improve the interfacial contacts. Low area specific impedance of 81.4Ω cm -2 is obtained and the full battery demonstrates good electrochemical performances.

The NASICON-type ceramic Li 1·5 Al 0.5 Ge 1.5 (PO4) 3 (LAGP) electrolyte has been proposed as the most competitive candidates of electrolyte materials toward solid-state Li metal batteries (LMBs) by reason of its high ionic conductivity , cyclic stability under extreme temperatures and wide voltage window. However, poor interface contact, high interfacial resistance and intractable mechanical properties greatly limit its practical applications. In this work, an inorganic-polymer “LAGP in PVDF” quasi-solid-state electrolyte (QSSE) is developed via solution casting method, in which pyr14TFSI ionic liquid (IL) and LiTFSI are combined as functional wetting interface . Benefiting from the coherent interaction of LAGP nanoparticles incorporated into the polymer matrix , and inherent protection of IL, the overall performance of the optimized QSSE include thermal stability, dense structure, flexibility and electrochemical properties . The XRD, SEM, XPS tests demonstrate that the IL using as a solid/electrolyte modified interlayer can enhance Li + transport, interfacial infiltration and homogenize lithium deposition. The LiFePO 4 |PL-25LAGP|Li solid-state battery presents an excellent circulation performance under ambient temperature, which displayed an initial discharge specific capacity of 146.8 mAh g −1 at 0.5C and capacity retention of 96.25 % after 150 cycles. The flexibility PL-LAGP CSE shows superior safety and greater development potential for the “LAGP in PVDF” composite electrolyte in solid state LMBs.

In this paper, a NASICON-type Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 (LATP)/Li1.3Al0.3Ge1.7(PO4)3 (LAGP) bi-layer structured solid state electrolyte was successfully prepared via a simple dry pressing and post-calcination method. By adjusting the sintering temperature for LAGP starting materials, a dense and smooth LATP/LAGP double-layer solid state electrolyte with no defects was obtained. This electrolyte sample exhibits a high electrical conductivity of 3.4 × 10−4 S cm−1 and a negligible electronic conductivity of 9.6 × 10−9 S cm−1 at room temperature. In addition, the LATP/LAGP electrolyte also shows an excellent stability in air as well as chemical stability against Li. Moreover, an assembled LiFePO4/LATP–LAGP/Li coin-type battery employing LATP/LAGP as the solid state electrolyte can be suitably charged and discharged at a current rate of 0.1C at room temperature, and its low charge–discharge capacities are mainly attributed to the high electrolyte/electrode interfacial resistance of the cell. These results suggest that the LATP/LAGP bi-layer electrolyte can be an alternative electrolyte for all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries.

Solid-state Li batteries using Na + superionic conductor type solid electrolyte attracts wide interest because of its safety and high theoretical energy density. The NASCION type solid electrolyte LAGP (Li 1. 5 Al 0.5 Ge 0.5 P 3 O 12 ) shows favorable conductivity as well as good mechanical strength to prevent Li dendrite penetration. However, the instability of LAGP with Li metal remains a great challenge. In this work, an amorphous Ge thin film is sputtered on an LAGP surface, which can not only suppress the reduction reaction of Ge 4+ and Li, but also produces intimate contact between the Li metal and the LAGP solid electrolyte. The symmetric cell with the Ge-coated LAGP solid electrolyte shows superior stability and cycle performance for 100 cycles at 0.1 mA cm −2 . A quasi-solid-state Li–air battery has also been assembled to further demonstrate this advantage. A stable cycling performance of 30 cycles in ambient air can be obtained. This work helps to achieve a stable and ionic conducting interface in solid-state Li batteries.

NASICON-type Li 1 . 5 Al 0 . 5 Ge 0 . 5 P 3 O 1 2 (LAGP) is one of the most promising inorganic solid-state electrolytes (SSEs). However, its practical applications have been hindered due to the high grain boundary resistance and poor sintering performance. In this work, we introduce a novel LiBF 4 sintering aid into LAGP to promote the growth of grains, decrease grain boundary resistance, and supplement the loss of lithium. The experimental results show that the ionic conductivity of LAGP-0.5 wt% LiBF 4 has the highest ionic conductivity (3.21 × 10 − 4 S/cm), grain boundary impedance decreases from 162.2 Ω to 35.2 Ω , the relative density increases from 93.6% to 96.5%, and no impurity phase is observed in LAGP–0.5 wt% LiBF 4 . At the same ionic conductivity, the sintering temperature of LAGP without LiBF 4 and with a small amount of LiBF 4 decreases from 800 ∘ C to 700 ∘ C. The Li/LAGP-LiBF 4 /LiFePO 4 cell presents excellent cyclic stability (capacity retention of the discharge capacity is still 117.5 mAhg − 1 after 100 cycles) and a high initial discharge capacity of 164.2 mAhg − 1 at 0.2 C.

Graphical Closed borders : A Li 1.5 Al 0.5 Ge 1.5 (PO 4 ) 3 (LAGP) ceramic is adopted to block the migration of polysulfides in Li−S batteries, with solvent-in-salt wetting the electrode/ceramic interfaces. Owing to suppressed dissolution of polysulfides in SIS, the semi-solid-state Li−S batteries show superior capacity retention and long cycling life. Aimed at tackling the shuttle effect in lithium-sulfur (Li−S) batteries, a Li 1.5 Al 0.5 Ge 1.5 (PO 4 ) 3 (LAGP) ceramic is adopted to block the migration of polysulfides. However, the LAGP-based Li−S battery with liquid electrolyte wetting the interfaces still suffers from rapid capacity decay, as polysulfides tend to dissolve into liquid electrolyte and get firmly adsorbed by LAGP. In this work, a dual confinement effect for polysulfides is put forward, enabled by the LAGP ceramic and solvent-in-salt (SIS), wherein the SIS can greatly suppress the dissolution of polysulfides. Owing to the synergistic effect of SIS and LAGP, the semi-solid-state Li−S batteries show superior capacity retention and long cycling life. In particular, at a current density of 0.2 C, the Li−S battery with SIS-modified LAGP ceramic electrolyte delivers a high initial reversible capacity of 1251.7 mAh g −1 and long cycle life of over 250 cycles with a decay rate of only 0.07 % per cycle.

High-energy rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, especially solid-state lithium metal batteries, are increasingly required to operate at elevated temperatures in addition to pursuing operation at low temperatures. However, the notorious chemical and electrochemical reactions at the interface between the Li-anode and solid state electrolyte (SSE) make these batteries lose almost all of their capacity and power at elevated temperatures. Here, a safe and long-cycle-life solid-state Li–CO 2 battery operating at elevated temperatures by constructing a stable and high ionic conductive molten salts interface (MSI) is reported. The MSI can effectively improve the interface contact and suppress interface reactions and the thermal runaway between Li-anode and Li 1.5 Al 0.5 Ge 1.5 P 3 O 12 (LAGP)-electrolyte even at high temperatures, thus enabling an ultra-low interface impedance (≈15 Ω) and discharge/charge overpotential (≈15 mV) for high temperature symmetric battery. In addition, the MSI-coated LAGP-electrolyte shows an ultra-flat and continuous surface that enables a homogeneous Li tripping/plating during cycles. As a result, the Li symmetric battery shows superior cycling stability over 600 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 at 150 °C. The assembled solid-state Li–CO 2 battery using Ru catalysts shows outstanding cycle stability over 980 cycles at 150 °C, with a capacity limitation of 500 mAhg –1 at 500 mA g −1 .

We report effectiveness of dopants selected from group 13, such as B, Ga, and In, on the conductivity of Li 1.5 Al 0.5 Ge 1.5 (PO 4 ) 3 (LAGP) that is recognized as one of the promising solid electrolytes for next-generation solid-state lithium batteries. To minimize loss of versatile element, crystallization of LAGP using a microwave irradiation is introduced. Experimental results demonstrate that B enhances grain boundary conductivity, while Ga improves the bulk ionic conductivity. Co-doping of B and Ga leads to enhanced total ionic conductivity and remarkably reduced activation energy.

NASION-type Li 1.5 Al 0.5 Ge 1.5 (PO 4 ) 3 (LAGP) is prepared by a novel sol-gel method using low cost inorganic germanium (GeO 2 ) as the precursor. The composition and phase transformation during the heating of the LAGP precursors are analyzed using thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The structures and morphologies of the LAGP are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that the LAGP annealed at 900 ℃ is partially crystallized and consists of a large number of nanoscale grains surrounded by amorphous regions. The LAGP particles present an irregular morphology with a large size distribution over a range of 0.2–1 μm. In addition, ionic conductivities of the prepared LAGP first increase and then decrease with an increase in the sintering temperature and time. A high ionic conductivity (4.18 × 10 −4 Scm -1 ) with an activation energy of 0.30 eV are obtained for the LAGP sample sintered at 900 °C for 8 h.
