Solute structure effect on aromatics-alkanes extractive separation toward rational LCO upgrading

Hongye Cheng,Guojin Zhang,Yaxi Zhang,Zhen Song,Zhiwen Qi

Unravelling solute effect on extractive separation of aromatics and alkanes is highly required toward its rational incorporation into economical upgrading of light cycle oil (LCO). This work systematically examines the effect of aromatic and alkane structures on extraction performance from experimental and theoretical perspectives. Liquid-liquid extraction experiments demonstrate that the distribution coefficient and extraction efficiency strongly depend on the aromatic structure, whereas the selectivity and theoretical purity of aromatics significantly rely on the alkane structure. The extraction mechanism is elucidated from interaction strength and interfacial thickness analysis using molecular dynamics simulation. The diaromatics of 1-methylnaphthalene has stronger affinity to deep eutectic solvent (DES) than the monoaromatics of tetralin, while longer alkyl-chain in hexadecane enhances its repulsive interaction with DES than dodecane. Extraction process simulation was then carried out with well-regressed parameters of NRTL thermodynamic model. Process simulation confirms that a high extraction performance can be achieved for model LCO containing more diaromatics. Therefore, it is preferable to incorporate aromatics-alkanes extractive separation into the pre-hydrotreating step of LCO upgrading process.

Ultrathin Titanium Dioxide Coating Enables High-Rate and Long-Life Lithium Cobalt Oxide

Liu Gao,Xin Jin,Zijin Li,Fujie Li,Binghui Xu,Chao Wang

Lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) has been widely used as a leading cathode material for lithium-ion batteries in consumer electronics. However, unstable cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) and undesired phase transitions during fast Li+diffusivity always incur an inferior stability of the high-voltage LCO (HV-LCO). Here, an ultra-thin amorphous titanium dioxide (TiO2) coating layer engineered on LCO by an atomic layer deposition (ALD) strategy is demonstrated to improve the high-rate and long-cycling properties of the HV-LCO cathode. Benefitting from the uniform TiO2protective layer, the Li+storage properties of the modified LCO obtained after 50 ALD cycles (LCO-ALD50) are significantly improved. The results show that the average Li+diffusion coefficient is nearly tripled with a high-rate capability of 125 mAh g−1at 5C. An improved cycling stability with a high-capacity retention (86.7%) after 300 cycles at 1C is also achieved, far outperforming the bare LCO (37.9%). The in situ XRD and ex situ XPS results demonstrate that the dense and stable CEI induced by the surface TiO2coating layer buffers heterogenous lithium flux insertion during cycling and prevents electrolyte, which contributes to the excellent cycling stability of LCO-ALD50. This work reveals the mechanism of surface protection by transition metal oxides coating and facilitates the development of long-life HV-LCO electrodes.

Kinetics Enhancement of High-Voltage LCO via In-Situ Formed Cyanide-Rich Polymer Interfaces

Lingpeng Luo,Weili Liao,Guo Wang,Chao Pang,Jiaozhi Yao,Chunyue Li,Jixiao Li,Sharui Zhang,Xiaokun Zhang,Yong Xiang

Lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO 2 ) is widely used as cathode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its high operation voltage and high specific capacity. However, conventional LiCoO 2 (LCO) undergoes severe structural phase transitions and compositional changes at high voltage (>4.4 V) leading to failure. Herein, a multifunctional crosslinked polymer interface is insitu formed on LCO particles, which can build a nanoscale conformal coating layer on the interface of LCO, preventing the side reaction with the electrolyte. Moreover, thanks to its high-voltage talerances and high Li + conductivity, the in-situ polymerized interface has excellent high-voltage stability and Li + transport kinetics, which significantly improves the electrochemical performances of LCO at 4.55 or 4.6 V. This study confirms the feasibility of in situ polymer modification of LCO, providing new ideas and methods for the structural stabilization and performance enhancement of high-voltage lithium cobalt oxides.

Study on Solvent Extraction Separation of Polymethyl-Substituted Monocyclic Aromatics from FCC LCO and Its Interaction Mechanism

Qi Li,Jie Li,Hongli Chen,Weihua Xing,Jingxian Wang,Yingyun Qiao,Yuanyu Tian

The efficient separation of aromatics from fluid catalytic cracking light cycle oil is crucial for improving oil quality and realizing the high-value utilization of aromatics. In this study, a two-step extraction-stripping high-efficiency separation method was developed, which successfully achieved the separation of nearly 99.99% pure aromatics. Focusing on the separation characteristics of polymethyl monocyclic aromatics, the extraction performances of sulfolane, dimethyl sulfoxide, and N, N-dimethylformamide was analyzed by GC-MS. Under the conditions of 318.15 K and 101.325 kPa, the liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) data of the extractant-p-xylene-heptane ternary system were determined. The results of the separation factor and distribution coefficient showed that sulfoxide had the best selectivity for polymethyl monocyclic aromatics, making it a potential high-efficiency extraction solvent. Furthermore, combined with density functional theory, the mechanism of solvent extraction of p-xylene from heptane was explored at the molecular level. Analyses of electrostatic potential, interaction energy, and reduced density gradient revealed that the main interaction was the van der Waals force. The LLE data were accurately correlated using the NRTL and UNIQUAC thermodynamic models, with the root-mean-square deviation values all below 0.0098. This study not only provides an efficient process for separating but also clarifies the structure-activity relationship between solvent molecular structure and extraction performance from both experimental and theoretical perspectives, providing a theoretical basis for the design and selection of high-performance separation solvents.

Direct regeneration of high-performance cathode materials from spent LCO batteries through in situ utilization of aluminum

Guisheng Zeng,Chongwen Hu,Rui Zhou,Juyong Wang,Xianfu Liu,Jianwen Huang,Jiaping Yu,Guanghui Wu,Zhongbing Wang,Chunjian Deng,Junwei He,Chunli Liu,Xubiao Luo

With the impending increase in the number of retired lithium-ion batteries, effective recycling and upcycling strategies must be explored to alleviate resource shortages, address environmental pollution, and meet the growing demand for high-performance cathode materials. This study proposes a closed-loop upcycling strategy that utilizes current collector aluminum (Al) as both a dopant and raw material for surface coating. This approach repairs the structural defects of highly degraded LiCoO 2 (LCO) cathode materials and achieves bulk Al doping and surface LiAlO 2 coating, transforming them into high-performance cathode materials capable of stable operation at a high voltage of 4.5 V. Specifically, bulk Al doping suppresses irreversible phase transitions and enhances structural stability, while the LiAlO 2 coating improves interfacial charge transfer and mitigates polarization. The synergistic effects of these modifications collectively enhance the electrochemical stability of LCO. The upcycled material delivers an initial discharge capacity exceeding 181.5 mAh g -1 and retains 93.9% of its capacity after 200 cycles at 1 C. Even under a high current rate of 10 C, the discharge capacity remains above 150.1 mAh g -1 , thereby outperforming commercial LCO cathodes. This study provides a simple and efficient solution for the direct upcycling of degraded LCO cathode materials into high-performance alternatives.

Composition-induced solvent effect regulation toward ultrafast and selective recovery of LCO cathodes from spent lithium-ion batteries

Xuemin Jing,Ziyi Sun,Xinyue Xu,Guangxian Liu,Yanhong Lu,Yu Chen

Spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have triggered an urgent demand for efficient and rapid recycling technologies to mitigate resource scarcity and environmental pollution. However, conventional LIB recycling approaches suffer from drawbacks such as harsh operating conditions, low metal selectivity, slow leaching kinetics, and secondary environmental pollution, severely restricting their large-scale sustainable application. Herein, we propose a composition-induced solvent effect regulation (CSER) strategy for recycling the LCO cathodes of LIBs. This strategy enables ultrafast and highly selective recovery of Li from the lithium cobalt oxide cathode under mild conditions. Specifically, at 80 °C for 24 h, the Li leaching efficiency reaches up to 98.3% with a negligible Co leaching efficiency of only 3.5%, corresponding to a high Li/Co selectivity of 28.1. Even within 1 h, the Li leaching efficiency still achieves 83.9% while maintaining a low Co leaching efficiency of 5.5% with a metal selectivity of 15.3. Mechanism investigations demonstrate that the modulation of the solvent composition in polyethylene glycol 200 and phosphorous acid-based DESs induces a variation in the solvent effect, which, in turn, governs the metal selectivity of Li/Co. A two-stage shrinking core model (TS-SCM) is introduced, which outperforms the traditional shrinking core model (SCM) in fitting the kinetic behavior of the leaching process for LIB recovery.

Constructing ternary hybrid interface with rapid Li+ conductivity to enable subzero-temperature Si-C||LCO pouch cell at −40 ℃

Jinwei Chen,Yuxuan Liu,Fanbo Meng,Shiman He,Jun Liu,Yujun Zhao,Kaiqiang Song,Renzong Hu,Min Zhu

Subzero temperature severely forbids the transfer of lithium ion (Li + ) between electrodes and the diffusion of Li + in interphase, which become one of the slowest steps. Especially in silicon-based battery systems, the continuous thickening and poor ionic conductivity of interface make this challenge more prominent. Maintaining a thin interface with superior ionic conductivity is an effective strategy to develop low temperature silicon-based batteries. Herein, a ternary hybrid solid electrolyte interface containing F, N, S was constructed by electrolyte design to improve Li + interface transport kinetics. Benefited from robust mechanical property of inorganics and high ionic conductivity of Li 3 N and Li x SO y , the hybrid interface sustains a thin thickness over cycles and behaves significantly reduced energy barrier for Li + diffusion. Thus, such interface enables Si-C||LCO pouch cell to maintain a high capacity retention of 56.4 % of the room-temperature capacity at −30℃, and retain 87.4 % of the capacity after 200 cycles. Even at −40℃ and a high loading of 3mAh/cm 2 , the cell can still be charged and provide a specific capacity of about 310 mAh/g with almost no capacity attenuation after 50 cycles. This work demonstrates the important role of excellent interface for low temperature silicon-based batteries, and provides a reference for the design of rapid Li + transport interface.

Uniform Al Doping in LiCoO2 for 4.55 V Lithium-Ion Pouch Cells

Jun Cheng,Wenjie Lin,Jingrong Hou,Yaqi Liao,Yunhui Huang

As the classic cathode material, lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2, LCO) suffers from severe structural and interfacial degradation at voltage >4.5 V, which induces fast capacity decay of the cells. Herein, we adopt a simple and effective method, doping aluminum (Al) cations in precursors, to improve the structural stability of LCO and systematically investigate the effect of Al doping on the electrochemical performances. Doping in precursors rather than bulk particles is beneficial to realize uniform Al ions distribution. Even at 4.5 V charging voltage, the LCO/graphite pouch cells with high Al doping levels (8500 ppm) deliver initial and reversible discharge capacities of 386 and 369 mAh after 500 cycles, respectively. The capacity retention is as high as 95.5%. When the cutoff voltage reaches 4.55 V, the pouch cell maintains 79.0% of the first-cycle discharge capacity after 500 cycles. With optimized electrolyte, the pouch cell realizes 87.3% of the initial discharge capacity after 500 cycles at 45 °C. Moreover, the thermal safety performance of the pouch cells with Al doping is promising. Our work displays an excellent inspiration for developing high-voltage, long-cycle, and safe LCO cathode for commercial lithium-ion batteries.

Phosphorus-modified Y zeolite supported Ni-W-S catalyst for selective hydrocracking of LCO to C6-C8 chemical raw materials in refining-chemical integration: effect of phosphorus content

Dai Xiaojun,Cheng Yan,Wei Qiang,Zhou Yasong

In the petrochemical industry, a significant method of achieving high-value usage of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in light cycle oil is the moderate hydrocracking of these hydrocarbons into C 6 -C 8 chemical raw materials. In order to prepare NiW-S supported catalysts, the impregnation technique was used to modify the small-crystal Y zeolites with P. The catalytic performance of the catalysts was assessed using naphthalene as the model chemical. The physicochemical characteristics of the catalysts and P-modified Y zeolites were examined in relation to the impacts of P modification. The results show that the introduction of P has a negative effect on the structural characteristics and acidity of Y zeolite, and this negative effect increases with the increase of P content. The introduction of P reduces the reduction temperature of the active metal of the catalyst and improves the reducibility of the active metal of the catalyst. Adding appropriate P species enhances the active phase characteristics of the corresponding Ni-W-S supported catalysts while weakening the metal-support interactions of the corresponding Ni-W-S supported catalysts. However, too much P species has a negative effect on the active phase characteristics of the catalysts. Naphthalene conversion and C 6 -C 8 selectivity were shown to be significantly influenced by the synergistic catalysis of acid sites and metal sites of the catalysts. The catalyst based on 2% P modified Y zeolite exhibited the best selectivity of C 6 -C 8 compounds. The yield of C 6 -C 8 of 2% P modified Y zeolite-based catalyst increased by 22.34% when compared to the unmodified catalyst. It is anticipated to serve as a guide for the high-value use of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in light cycle oil in petrochemical industry.

Citral induces plant systemic acquired resistance against tobacco mosaic virus and plant fungal diseases

Yue Jiang,Xiaolan Ji,Yueyang Zhang,Xiaoyu Pan,Yizhou Yang,Yiming Li,Wenhui Guo,Yong Wang,Zhiqing Ma,Bin Lei,He Yan,Xili Liu

Litsea cubeba essential oil (LCO) has a wide range of industrial uses. This study found that LCO has significant anti-TMV activity and that its active components are monoterpenoids. Citral , the main active component of the oil, showed outstanding anti-TMV activity. The protective, inactive, and curative efficacies of citral (500 μg/mL) against TMV were 76.27%, 55.14%, and 50.42%, respectively, which were significantly better than those of the positive control agent, chitosan oligosaccharide . Citral showed no direct effect on TMV particles but did induce hypersensitive response (HR). Bioassay results showed that citral induced significant plant disease resistance activity (68.20% at a concentration of 500 μg/mL). The results of physiological and biochemical experiments showed that citral induced the overexpression of defense enzymes such as SOD , CAT , POD , and PAL in tobacco (which increased by 5.3, 1.9, 3.0, and 4.0 times at a concentration of 500 μg/mL, respectively) as well as induced the overexpression of PR proteins, including NPR1 , PR1 , PR2 , and PR5 (which increased by 23.49, 39.27, 34.47, and 52.07 times at a concentration of 500 μg/mL, respectively). These results suggest that citral could induce systemic acquired resistance (SAR) in tobacco. Further mechanism studies conducted suggest that citral induces the overexpression of genes related to salicylic acid (SA) biosynthesis, including PAL , ICS , and PBS3 (50.74, 30.41, and 31.95 times higher than the control at a concentration of 500 μg/mL, respectively) and the accumulation of SA (5.1 times higher than the control at a concentration of 500 μg/mL). These results suggest that citral activates SAR through the SA pathway. The control efficacies induced by citral (500 μg/mL) on Erysiphe cucurbitacearum , Botrytis cinerea , and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum reached 67.39%, 59.61%, and 63.81%, respectively, indicating that citral can induce plant resistance against fungal diseases. The induced plant disease resistance activity of citral is prominent, with a long duration and a broad spectrum, performing better than the commercial agent chitosan oligosaccharide. Citral thus has the potential to be developed into a new botanical-derived anti-virus agent and plant immunity activator.

Mechanical Stirring Synthesis of 1D Electrode Materials and Designing of Pyramid/Inverted Pyramid Interlocking for Highly Flexible and Foldable Li-Ion Batteries with High Mass Loading

Xiao Yu,Qi Liu,Zhenqian Wu,Wenxia Zhao,Ruimei Xu,Yong Liu

Flexible and foldable Li-ion batteries (LIBs) are presently attracting immense research interest for their potential use in wearable electronics but are still limited to electrodes with very small mass loading, low bending/folding endurance, and poor electrochemical stability during repeated bending and folding movements. Moreover, one-dimensional (1D) structured electrode materials have shown excellent electrochemical performance but are still restricted by the high cost and complicated fabrication process. Here, we present a very simple yet novel approach for fabricating extra-long Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) and LiCoO2 (LCO) nanofiber precursors by directly stirring the reagents in an atmospheric vessel. In addition, we present multilayer pyramid/inverted pyramid interlocking inside the LTO and LCO nanofiber films as well as between films and current collectors, which can create strengthened interfacial bonding like a zipper and tangentially disperse the strains generated during folding through the pyramidal planes and edges, leading to the realization of thick-film electrodes with outstanding electrochemical stability during folding movements. The foldable LIBs that are assembled with LTO and LCO nanofiber electrodes at a practical level of mass loading (14.9–19.4 mg cm–2) can maintain 102% of the initial capacity after 15 000 times of fully folding (180°) motions.

Functionalized Graphene Oxide with Hepatocyte Targeting as Anti-Tumor Drug and Gene Intracellular Transporters

Cao Xiufen,Zheng Shuang,Zhang Sipei,Wang Yinsong,Yang Xiaoying,Duan Hongquan,Huang Yi,Chen Yongshen

In order to realize the hepatocyte-specific targeted delivery of anti-tumor drug and gene, lactosylated chitosan oligosaccharide (LCO) functionalized graphene oxides (GO-LCO) containing quaternary ammonium groups (GO-LCO+) were prepared. The formation and composition of GO-LCO+ were confirmed by FTIR, AFM, TGA and zeta-potential. The in vitro cells uptakes of this functionalized GO were investigated and the results showed that GO-LCO+ can deliver fluorescein FAM-labeled DNA sequence (FAM-DNA) into human hepatic carcinoma cells (QGY-7703) with higher efficiency than positively charged chitosan oligosaccharide (CO) functionalized graphene oxides (GO-CO+) without Lactose acid modification. The loading efficiency of doxorubicin chloride (Dox) on GO-LCO+ with 477 μg/mg was obtained at the initial Dox concentration of 0.45 mg/ml and release of Dox on GO-LCO+ showed strong pH dependence. The toxicity of GO-LCO+ before and after loading with Dox toward QGY-7703 cells was further investigated. Our results suggest the functionalized GO to be used as a nanocarrier for hepatocyte targeted co-delivery of anti-tumor drugs and genes with low cytotoxicity, promising for future applications in anticancer drug and gene combined therapy.
