Elaborate design of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) composites with enhanced properties is of fundamental interest and practical importance in the fields of catalysis. Typical strategies are usually focused on how to increase MOFs contents while lacking architecture design for performance improvements. Herein, we first report MOFs composites with Janus structures to boost catalytic performance by Le Châtelier’s principle when using wood aerogel as a versatile platform. Janus structures mean that one part of the composite is still wood aerogel while the other part is decorated with MOFs. The underoil hydrophilicity of the wood aerogels endows the Janus composites with dehydration capacity for promoting the equilibrium movement so as to boost the catalytic performance. The catalytic performance of Janus composites for the Knoevenagel reaction increases more than 40% compared with those symmetric composites. Moreover, both the final conversion and the reaction rate are much better for the Janus composites than other state-of-the-art heterogeneous ZIF-8-based catalysts. Our design is general and paves the way to exploit composites with special architecture.

Strong metal–support interactions (SMSIs) are crucial for the preparation of supported metal catalysts. A prevailing view is that the redox feature of the metal oxide support is the driving force behind SMSI construction. Herein we demonstrate CO 2 -induced SMSIs between irreducible oxide MgO and noble gold nanoparticles, presenting electronic and geometric features that are similar to those of classical SMSIs. The key to these interactions is activating the oxide surface by a reversible reaction, MgO + CO 2 ⇆ MgCO 3 , which leads to migration of the support onto the gold nanoparticles to form thin overlayers. The overlayer is permeable to the reactant molecules, stable under the oxidation conditions and even water tolerant, resulting in sinter-resistant gold nanoparticle catalysts. This investigation provides an approach for the rational design and optimization of supported metal catalysts based on irreducible oxides, and deepens our understanding of the mechanism of SMSI formation.

Hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke and cardiovascular events in clinic, which is accompanied by the abnormality of vascular tone and endothelial dysfunction of small artery. Here we report that Kang Le Xin (KLX), a novel anthraquinones compound, could reduce blood pressure and the underlying mechanisms involves that KLX induces endothelium-dependent vasodilation. KLX significantly decreases the arterial blood pressure of spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHR), decreases the contractile reactivity of superior mesenteric artery to phenylephrine and increases the vasodilatory reactivity of superior mesenteric artery to carbachol in a dose-dependent manner. Besides, KLX reduces vascular tension of endothelium-intact mesenteric artery pre-constricted with phenylephrine in a dose-dependent manner, while this effect is inhibited by depriving vascular endothelium or pretreating vascular rings with L-NAME (endothelial nitric oxide synthase inhibitor) or compound C (AMP-activated protein kinase inhibitor). Moreover, KLX increases nitric oxide (NO) generation, endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), AKT and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) phosphorylation in cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), while these effects are inhibited by pretreating cells with compound C. In conclusion, KLX is a new compound with the pharmacological action of reducing arterial blood pressure. The underlying mechanism involves KLX induces endothelium-dependent vasodilation through activating AMPK-AKT-eNOS signaling pathway.

Self-doping by Ti3+ and introducing oxygen vacancies in TiO2 is an important and effective strategy to extend its optical absorption from the UV into the visible region. In this paper, we report the synthesis of a series of Ti3+ self-doped TiO2 nanocrystals via a hydrothermal method using TiCl3 and (NH4)2TiF6 as the source of Ti3+ and Ti4+, respectively. The oxidation of Ti3+ can be inhibited by (NH4)2TiF6 based on Le Chatelier's principle. The samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, field-emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microcopy, respectively. The results indicate that Ti3+ is localized in the bulk of the as-prepared TiO2 nanocrystals, rather than on the surface. In comparison with pristine TiO2, the Ti3+ self-doped TiO2 nanocrystals exhibit an enhanced photocatalytic activity of 86.3% towards the photodegradation of methylene blue solution under simulated solar light irradiation and 99% under natural solar irradiation. It is found that the molar ratio of Ti4+/Ti3+ used during the synthesis has significant effects on the photocatalytic activity of Ti3+ self-doped TiO2 photocatalysts, since the electronic structures of the resulting Ti3+ self-doped TiO2 nanocrystals can be finely tuned by changing the ratios. The significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity should be due to the self-doping of Ti3+ in TiO2 nanocrystals, which not only increases the optical absorption in the visible light region, but also helps to spatially separate the photogenerated charge carriers.

The objective of this study was to study the effect of calcium ions on the binding of lysozyme to chitosan (CS)/sodium alginate (SA) complexes (CS-SA-Ps), in order to develop a complex system for lysozyme delivery which might be of practical interest in the field of food preservatives . Result showed that with the increase of calcium ions (Ca 2+ ) concentration, the value of Z-Ave decreased while the value of ζ-potential and LE increased, where the addition of 5.0 mM Ca 2+ contributed to uniform distribution of the complexes. Sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) revealed that there was no significant difference of molecular integrity when lysozyme was released from CS-SA-Ps. The exothermic interaction between lysozyme and SA were proved by thermodynamic measurements, in which the binding stoichiometry showed a slight decrease in the presence of calcium chloride. Moreover, the release rate of lysozyme from CS-SA-Ps could be slowed by the increase of Ca 2+ addition concentration.
