In this study, Li 2 O–Ga 2 O 3 -GeO 2 -Gd 2 O 3 (LGGG) glass is doped into Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) ceramic in proportions of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 wt% by a conventional solid-state reaction method. The main crystalline phase that existed in this composite electrolyte is proved to be cubic phase LLZO by XRD patterns. With a dosage of 3 wt% LGGG glass, the composite electrolyte has the highest ionic conductivity of 3.26 × 10 −4 S cm −1 , a maximum relative density of about 96.79%, and minimum activation energy of 0.276 eV at room temperature. This work also verifies that doping the same amount of identified elements into LLZO ceramics in the form of glass can obtain higher ionic conductivity and relative density than in the form of oxides (2.40 × 10 −4 S cm −1 and 92.03%). A symmetric cell composed of this electrolyte reveals a good cycling performance and low overpotential in a total of 230 cycles at a current density of 0.125 mA cm −2 . These results confirm the potential of this LGGG-LLZO composite electrolyte for applicating in new generation all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries.

Li-garnet Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) is a promising candidate of solid electrolytes for high-safety solid-state Li+ ion batteries. However, because of its high reactivity to water, the preparation of LLZO powders and ceramics is not easy for large-scale amounts. Herein, a method applying water-based solvent is proposed to demonstrate a possible solution. Ta-doped LLZO, that is, Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO), and its LLZTO/MgO composite ceramics are made by attrition milling, followed by a spray-drying process using water-based slurries. The impacts of parameters of the method on the structure and properties of green and sintered pellets are studied. A relative density of ∼95%, a Li-ion conductivity of ∼3.5 × 10–4 S/cm, and uniform grain size LLZTO/MgO garnet composite ceramics are obtained with an attrition-milled LLZTO/MgO slurry that contains 40 wt % solids and 2 wt % polyvinyl alcohol binder. Li–sulfur batteries based on these ceramics are fabricated and work under 25 °C for 20 cycles with a Coulombic efficiency of 100%. This research demonstrates a promising mass production method for the preparation of Li-garnet ceramics.

Due to the increasingly urgent safety and energy density concerns of lithium-ion batteries, more and more attention has been attracted by the Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO)-based solid electrolytes with high ion conductivity and chemical stability against Li-metal. However, to prepare the high-quality LLZO ceramic electrolyte with high-ion conductivity and density, there is still a big challenge of the serious “Li-loss” and the abnormal grain growth during the long-time high-temperature sintering process. A novel covered sintering method is put forward to prepare the high-quality Mo-doped LLZO (LLZMO) ceramic electrolyte. The sintering strategy effectively suppresses the Li-loss to obtain the LLZMO dense ceramics with cubic garnet phase and tight grain boundaries. The LLZMO ceramics sintered at lower temperature of 1050 °C for 2 h via the novel covered sintering exhibit high density ( ρ r = 92.3%) and high-ionic conductivity of 6.08 × 10 –4 S cm −1 at 25 °C, which are close to those of LLZO-based ceramics prepared by hot pressing sintering, ultrafast high-temperature sintering (UHS). The novel covered sintering provides an energy-saving, low-cost and high-efficient strategy to prepare the high-quality LLZO-based ceramics electrolyte.

Cubic phase Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) is a promising electrolyte material for all-solid-state rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. The homogeneous densification of the garnet solid electrolyte ceramic material is crucial for enhancing its ionic conductivity performance. Herein, an Al/Ta co-doped strategy is employed to stabilize the cubic phase structure of LLZO and is combined with a two-step sintering method to enhance densification, in order to investigate its effect on microstructure, ionic conductivity, and electrochemical properties . During the formation process, amorphous Li 2 O reacts with doped Al 2 O 3 to create a Li–Al–O liquid phase at the grain boundaries. Combined with two-step sintering to ensure that the desired material transformation is achieved, resulting in a dense microstructure and better mechanical properties. The solid electrolyte Li 6.4 Al 0.1 La 3 Zr 1.7 Ta 0.3 O 12 under two-step sintering (LLZATO-2) is successfully synthesized, delivering an ionic conductivity up to 7.33 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at room temperature and an activation energy of 0.22 eV. This work also highlights the critical role of co-doping combined with two-step sintering in preparing well-performing solid-state electrolytes and all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries.
