Garnet-type double-layer solid electrolyte for dendrite-free solid-state Li batteries

Feng Xingyi,Zeng Yingping,Yan Deen,Zou Hanbo,Yang Wei,Chen Shengzhou

Due to its high energy density and better safety performance, all-solid-state lithium batteries are regarded as important energy storage devices to replace the traditional liquid electrolyte Li-ion batteries. However, the problems of poor wettability of Li metal anode | solid-state electrolyte interface and easy growth of lithium dendrite have not been well solved. Here, we have constructed Fe-doped Li 7-3x Fe x La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (Fe-LLZO) and Li 6.5 La 3 Zr 1.5 Ta 0.5 O 12 (LLZTO) garnet-type double-layer solid electrolyte. The high density of Li 7-3x Fe x La 3 Zr 2 O 12 electrolyte and its interfacial wettability to Li metal not only effectively reduced the interface impedance between Li and solid electrolyte but also could stably cycle for more than 200 h without the growth of lithium dendrites at the rate of 0.1 mA cm −2 . In addition, the all-solid-state lithium battery (Li|Fe 0.1 -LLZO|LLZTO|LFP) with LiFePO 4 as a cathode also showed excellent cycle stability and C-rate performance.

Preparation and performances of gallium-doped LLZO electrolyte with high ionic conductivity by rapid ultra-high-temperature sintering

Xiyuan Tao,Li Yang,Jiali Liu,Zihao Zang,Peng Zeng,Changfei Zou,Lingguang Yi,Xiaoyi Chen,Xiaolin Liu,Xianyou Wang

Garnet-type Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) is a promising solid-state electrolyte (SSE) for next generation lithium batteries due to its high Li + conductivity and stability against lithium metal, especially the Li 7−3x Ga x La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (Ga-LLZO) is most valuable because of its high ionic conductivity (> 1 ×10 −3 S cm −1 ). However, it is difficult to prepare high-quality Ga-LLZO by the traditional air ambient sintering. Herein, we develop a simple and efficient rapid ultra-high-temperature sintering (RUHTS) method to prepare high-conductivity Ga-LLZO ceramic SSE. It has been found that the as-prepared Ga-LLZO ceramic SSE with the composition of Li 6.25 Ga 0.25 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 exhibits high relative density of 99%, good ionic conductivity of 1.48 × 10 −3 S cm −1 and large critical current density of 0.5 mA cm −2 after sintering at 1200 °C for 2 min. In addition, the Ga-LLZO SSE shows good electrochemical stability and interfacial compatibility against Li metal. The assembled Li-Li symmetric cell represents a small interfacial impedance of 37 Ω cm 2 . In the same time, the Li/Ga-LLZO/LE+LMNCO full battery has a total impedance of 205 Ω cm 2 , and can deliver a first discharge capacity of 235.1 mAh g −1 at 0.5 C, and the capacity retention rate is 88.3% after 100 cycles. This indicates that the as-prepared Ga-LLZO has good application prospect in the Li-metal solid-state batteries (LMSSBs). Moreover, this method does not require the use of mother powder during preparation process, which will effectively reduce the waste of raw materials, save manufacture costs and be beneficial to quantity production of Ga-LLZO ceramic electrolyte.

Storage and release of rare earth elements in microsphere-based scaffolds for enhancing osteogenesis

Xu Weikang,Wei Kun,Lin Zefeng,Wu Tingting,Li Guixiang,Wang Liyan

In osteoporosis and diabetes, it is essential to accelerate the bone repair and regeneration process. Trace rare earth elements such as lanthanum (La) ions (La 3+ ) with appropriate concentrations are bioactive and can effectively regulate bone tissue performances. However, few well-established bone tissue engineering scaffolds can precisely and stably release La 3+ to promote bone regeneration significantly. Based on the advantages of biodegradable microspheres and microsphere-based scaffolds for controlled drug release, we developed poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA)-based microsphere-based scaffolds as both three-dimensional (3D) porous scaffolds and La 3+ storage and release systems for osteogenesis. So far, there is no study about microsphere-based scaffolds to release trace La 3+ to induce osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (BMSCs). PLGA microspheres co-embedded with La-doped mesoporous silica (LMS) with different amounts of doped La were sintered to prepare the LMS/PLGA (LMSP) microsphere-based scaffold. The La 3+ release behavior of LMSP can be controlled by adjusting the doping amount of La in mesoporous silica (MS). All these scaffolds possessed a 3D network architecture. With the increase of La doping, LMSP can better compensate for the pH decrease caused by PLGA degradation. The combination of MS and PLGA can avoid the cytotoxicity of MS alone. All prepared LMSP scaffolds were non-cytotoxic. After BMSCs were implanted on scaffolds, LMSP could promote cells adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation. Among these microsphere-based scaffolds, LMSP-3 with stable and higher dose La 3+ release behavior showed the strongest ability to enhance the osteogenesis of BMSCs. The results showed that microsphere-based scaffolds with the ability to store and stably control the release of La 3+ could effectively improve osteogenic performance, which provides a new idea for the construction of bone tissue engineering scaffolds.

Tuning Porous Li 6.25 Ga 0.25 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LGLZO) Frameworks for Enhanced Ion Transport in Semi-Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

Ziyao Wang,Sijia Huo,Meichen Pan,Yihan Qiu,Ying Tian,Ying Zhou,Wei Yan,Wen Wang,Yu Zhou,Xiaoming Duan

Lithium metal is considered an ideal anode material owing to its high specific capacity, low density, and low redox potential, but its practical use in liquid systems is hindered by dendrite growth and interfacial instability. Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) offer high thermal stability and mechanical strength, with Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) particularly attractive for its high ionic conductivity and wide electrochemical window. Semi-solid-state electrolytes (SSSEs), integrating the advantages of SSEs and liquid electrolytes (LEs), can be further enhanced by introducing porous solid frameworks. Such structures improve wettability and transport while providing mechanical support that suppresses dendrites, thereby achieving both high conductivity and structural safety. In this work, a two-dimensional porous solid-state skeleton model was established to investigate the influence of porosity on lithium-ion transport. The percolation threshold was determined to be 47.91% porosity, indicating the minimum connectivity required for efficient ion migration. Based on these insights, a graphite-template sacrificial method was employed to fabricate a highly interconnected porous Li 6.25 Ga 0.25 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LGLZO) framework (P G LF). The ionic conductivity of the P G LF-LiPF 6 SSSE reached 3.02×10 -3 S cm -1 at room temperature. The constructed Li/Li cell can be stably cycled for more than 1600 h at 0.5 mA cm -2 , and the capacity retention rate of the LFP/Li cell was 91.62% after 2000 cycles at 2 C. In addition, similar properties can be achieved by replacing the formwork material (charcoal powder). This work established a correlation between porosity and ion transport performance, providing a promising preparation method for high-performance lithium metal batteries (LMBs).

Heterogeneous electrolyte membranes enabling double-side stable interfaces for solid lithium batteries

Shuang Mu,Weilin Huang,Wuhui Sun,Ning Zhao,Mengyang Jia,Zhijie Bi,Xiangxin Guo

The solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) is one of the most promising candidates for building solid lithium batteries with high energy density and safety due to its advantages of flexibility and light-weight. However, the conventional monolayered electrolytes usually exhibit unstable contacts with either high-voltage cathodes or Li-metal anodes during cell operation. Herein, heterogeneous dual-layered electrolyte membranes (HDEMs) consisting of the specific functional polymer matrixes united with the designed solid ceramic fillers are constructed to address the crucial issues of interfacial instability. The electrolyte layers composed of the high-conductivity and oxidation-resistance polyacrylonitrile (PAN) combined with Li 0.33 La 0.557 TiO 3 nanofibers are in contact with the high-voltage cathodes, achieving the compatible interface between the cathodes and the electrolytes. Meanwhile, the electrolyte layers composed of the high-stability and dendrite-resistance polyethylene oxide (PEO) with Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 nanoparticles are in contact with the Li-metal anodes, aiming to suppress the dendrite growth, as well as avoid the passivation between the PAN and the Li-metal. Consequently, the solid LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 ||Li full cells based on the designed HDEMs show the good rate and cycling performance, i.e. the discharge capacity of 170.1 mAh g −1 with a capacity retention of 78.2% after 100 cycles at 0.1C and 30 °C. The results provide an effective strategy to construct the heterogeneous electrolyte membranes with double-side stable electrode/electrolyte interfaces for the high-voltage and dendrite-free solid lithium batteries.

Dual Interface Compatibility Enabled via Composite Solid Electrolyte with High Transference Number for Long-Life All-Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

Mengyang Cui,Shiyang Fu,Shisheng Yuan,Bo Jin,Hui Liu,Yiyang Li,Nan Gao,Qing Jiang

The development of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) effectively solves the safety problem derived from dendrite growth and volume change of lithium during cycling. In the meantime, the SSEs possess non-flammability compared to conventional organic liquid electrolytes. Replacing liquid electrolytes with SSEs to assemble all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) has garnered significant attention as a promising energy storage/conversion technology for the future. Herein, a composite solid electrolyte containing two inorganic components (Li 6.25 Al 0.25 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 , Al 2 O 3 ) and an organic polyvinylidene difluoride matrix is designed rationally. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculation results demonstrate the synergistic effect among the components, which results in enhanced ionic conductivity, high lithium-ion transference number, extended electrochemical window, and outstanding dual interface compatibility. As a result, Li||Li symmetric battery maintains a stable cycle for over 2500 h. Moreover, all-solid-state lithium metal battery assembled with LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 cathode delivers a high discharge capacity of 168 mAh g −1 after 360 cycles at 0.1 C at 25 °C, and all-solid-state lithium–sulfur battery also exhibits a high initial discharge capacity of 912 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C. This work demonstrates a long-life flexible composite solid electrolyte with excellent interface compatibility, providing an innovative way for the rational construction of next-generation high-energy-density ASSLMBs.

A self-supporting solid electrolyte membrane with fibrous network structure for solid state lithium metal batteries

Shijie Lu,Xiaorong Chu,Chunli Li,Zhikun Zhao,Jianxiong Xiao,Borong Wu,Daobin Mu

High ionic conductivity and good interface compatibility have always been two major bottlenecks for solid-state electrolytes. Herein, a composite electrolyte membrane comprising poly (propylene carbonate), PVDF-HFP and Li 6 · 3 La 3 Zr 1 · 4 Ta 0 · 6 O 12 is successfully prepared via electrospinning. With the assistance of succinonitrile, the synthesized solid-state electrolyte exhibits high ionic conductivity (1.32 × 10 −3  S cm −1 at room temperature), oxidation potential up to 4.5 V vs Li/Li + and high Li + transference number (0.81). This desirable performance is attributed to the combination of PPC with good Li + conduction ability and PVDF-HFP with excellent mechanical properties, forming a continuous transport framework within the electrolyte. The introduced active fillers and small molecular additive not only benefit to fast Li + mobility, but also reinforce the stability towards Li metal. Li symmetric cell using the solid-state electrolyte can last for 800 h at a current density of 1.0 mA cm −2 with a low overpotential. The NCM811 cell using the electrolyte membrane shows high initial discharge specific capacity (184.3 mAh g −1 at 1 C) and good capacity retention (80.1% after 300 cycles at 30 °C).
