Fabrication of low-cost, stable and highly efficient catalysts for clean energy and environmental control applications is an urgent task. In this work, we have successfully synthesized a multifunctional two-dimensional rare earth-based LaOCl@hcp-Ni heterostructure via a simple one-pot method. Here, the semiconductor LaOCl nanoparticles were well deposited on the metastable metal hcp-Ni, and the hexagonal close-packed structure of hcp-Ni matched the layered-structure LaOCl to form a highly active LaOCl@hcp-Ni Schottky catalyst. Furthermore, LaOCl@hcp-Ni were tested for Photoelectrochemical (PEC) oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media and the photocatalytic (PC) degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous solution. LaOCl@hcp-Ni shows excellent PEC-OER catalytic activity and RhB degradation performance under artificial simulated sunlight. This enhancement of PEC and PC performance is due to the Schottky interface constructed by the coupling of hcp-Ni and LaOCl, which generates an interface electric field to effectively promote the transfer of photogenerated electrons from the semiconductor LaOCl to the metal hcp-Ni through the interface. Thus, energy band gap of LaOCl with oxygen defects is adjusted to the visible light region and their valence state of La is lowered, realizing high-efficiency visible light catalytic activity. Thus, it would be a potential rare earth-based Schottky catalyst, which can be used for the PEC oxygen evolution and the PC degradation of organic pollutants.

The spatial loading of redox cocatalysts on different faces of semiconductor single crystals is an effective approach to construct efficient photocatalysts . This work selectively deposits Pt nanoparticles on the electron-rich (001) face of LaOCl catalyst (Pt/LaOCl-P). The Pt/LaOCl-P catalyst with selective deposition on (001) facet exhibited higher photocatalytic activity for NOR degradation than the catalyst with random deposition on the entire surface (Pt/LaOCl-R). It indicates that the separation of facet charges upon photoexcitation may be a unique pathway for efficient photocatalysts. After the addition of persulfate, the generated sulfate radicals have a synergistic effect with the original hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals , which further improves the photodegradation performance. In addition, the effects of catalyst dosage and pH on photodegradation were discussed and the recycling performance of the materials was tested. The possible degradation pathways and mechanism of NOR were degraded by DFT calculation and LC-MS analysis.

In this work, LaOCl/LDH Z-scheme heterojunction catalyst containing oxygen vacancies were successfully constructed and used for photodegradation of norfloxacin (NOR). The results showed that the removal rate of NOR by LaOCl/LDH was up to 90%, and the reaction rate constant was 2 times than LaOCl and LDH. By exploring factors affecting the photodegradation performance, including pH, catalyst dosage, light intensity and reaction time, the kinetics of the degradation process were investigated in detail. It indicates that the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction enhanced the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers and enhanced the redox capacity of photocarriers. DFT calculation shows that the oxygen vacancies on LaOCl promoted the absorption of visible light and effectively adsorbing and activating small molecules. In addition, based on LC-MS results, intermediates and a possible pathway for NOR degradation were proposed. The synergistic effect of Z-scheme heterojunction and oxygen vacancies enhanced the photodegradation property of LaOCl/LDH for NOR, which provides a reference for constructing highly efficient photocatalysts.

A ternary photocatalyst of LaOCl/CeO 2 -g-C 3 N 4 was designed and firstly synthesized by a facile KCl–LiCl molten salt method. The 60 %LaOCl/40 %CeO 2 -g-C 3 N 4 with a 6: 4 weight ratio of LaOCl to CeO 2 has an optimal degradation ratio (nearly 100%) for methylene blue (MB) with an impressive cyclic stability. Both of adsorption and photodegradation contribute to the high MB removal ratio, and kinetic study results show that the rate constant of photocatalytic degradation route is 0.0174 min −1 , which is less than that of adsorption process (2.4406 min −1 ). The excellent adsorption performance of 60 %LaOCl/40 %CeO 2 -g-C 3 N 4 is attributed to its negative zeta potential (−35.40 mV) and larger average pore size. The photochemical characterizations suggest that the 60 %LaOCl/40 %CeO 2 -g-C 3 N 4 form a dual Z-scheme heterojunction , which enhances its separation efficiency of photogenerated e - / h + with an outstanding redox ability, and further promotes the photocatalytic activity.

2D semiconductors are widely regarded as the future of highly integrated circuits, but their commercialization is hindered by the lack of suitable gate dielectrics that meet stringent performance and processing requirements. In this study, a novel LiNO₃-assisted Confined Flux Growth (CFG) method is presented that enables the synthesis of high-quality 2D LaOCl nanosheets at remarkably low temperatures (250–350 °C). The synthesized LaOCl not only shows an exciting coexistence of wide bandgap (≈5.54 eV) and high dielectric constant (≈13.8) but also can form high-quality van der Waals interfaces with 2D semiconductors. Compared to traditional methods, the CFG approach significantly reduces thermal budget, providing opportunities for facile integration with the traditional semiconductor industry. Furthermore, the multifunctional application of LaOCl is demonstrated in 2D transistors. The MoS₂ field-effect transistors (FET) gated by LaOCl exhibit excellent gate control (on/off ratio >10⁸) and low interfacial trap density. The floating-gate devices with LaOCl as the tunneling layer show an extremely large storage window (≈91%) and stable storage characteristics. These findings establish 2D LaOCl as a transformative dielectric material, paving the way for next-generation multifunctional 2D electronic devices.

Defect engineering and heterostructure construction are important strategies to enhance the photocatalytic performance of single-phase materials. In this study, an O- and Cd-dual-defect-modified LaOCl@CdS heterojunction (Ov-L@Cdv-C) was successfully constructed. Under visible light irradiation, using the typical fluoroquinolone antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP) as the target pollutant, Ov-L@Cdv-C exhibited superior photocatalytic degradation performance compared to Ov-LaOCl and Ov-L@CdS. Under optimal conditions (0.5 g/L catalyst, 0.010 g/L initial CIP concentration, pH = 5), the degradation efficiency of CIP reached 84.79 % within 150 min, significantly higher than that of Ov-LaOCl (48.73 %) and Ov-L@CdS (71.96 %). XPS and EPR characterizations confirmed the presence of abundant O and Cd dual defects in the Ov-L@Cdv-C heterojunction. ESR and free radical quenching experiments revealed that the main reactive species during the degradation process were ·O 2 − and h⁺. Based on work function calculations and built-in electric field analysis, a Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism for the Ov-L@Cdv-C dual-defect heterojunction was proposed. Furthermore, LC-MS analysis identified the degradation intermediates and proposed three possible degradation pathways. In addition, T.E.S.T. predictions indicated that the toxicity of CIP gradually decreased during the photocatalytic degradation process.

Molten salts have been reported to be excellent media for the preparation of multicationic oxides, which require harsh conditions to crystallize. Molten salt synthesis provides a wider operational temperature range (usually extends to 1000 °C) and faster mass transport and nucleation processes, thus allowing the preparation of crystalline solids, which require higher temperatures, such as perovskites. However, the mechanisms that control the solid-state formation and phase selection are poorly understood. Herein, several typical molten alkali metal halide (Cl−) and oxosalt (CO32− and SO42−) systems were employed as the reaction media for the synthesis of LaCoO3 (LCO) crystals, and the effects of ionic salt species on the morphological, geometric and electronic structures of LCO crystals were examined by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The LCO perovskite was successfully synthesized in a molten NaCl–KCl eutectic mixture at 700 °C, which was lower than that used for the conventional mixed oxide synthesis. Our results show that in the molten salt synthesis, the type of reaction medium, calcination temperature, the ratio of salt, and reaction time govern the microscopic mechanisms in the preparation of multicationic oxides. Most importantly, we observed that LaOCl was formed as an intermediate, which plays a key role in the reaction pathway for the phase-selective synthesis of perovskite LCO.

Organoarsenical contaminants such as roxarsone (ROX) pose a persistent challenge in water treatment because oxidative degradation of the parent compound inevitably generates inorganic arsenic (iAs), whereas adsorption-based processes immobilize iAs without removing the organoarsenical precursor. As a result, arsenic is redistributed among species rather than eliminated, and its overall fate during transformation and immobilization remains poorly quantified. Here, we develop a Co-doped LaOCl catalyst (Co 0.5 LOC) that enables coupled oxidative transformation and arsenic immobilization under peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation via spatially integrated Co and La sites. Critically, a complete time-resolved arsenic mass balance is achieved throughout the reaction, with total arsenic recovery maintained at 100 ± 2%, thereby directly linking ROX degradation, iAs formation, and final immobilization. The catalyst exhibits a pseudo-first-order ROX degradation rate of 0.2935 min −1 , 2.2-fold higher than pristine LaOCl, with >96% removal across pH 5–9 and >81% activity retention after five cycles. Mechanistic analysis identifies surface-confined singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) as the dominant reactive species, providing strong resistance to chloride ions and natural organic matter. A synergy index of 6.72 quantifies non-additive oxidation–adsorption coupling. Total organic carbon monitoring reveals that structural transformation substantially exceeds mineralization, with approximately 26% of the initial carbon remaining at 120 min; LC-HRMS tentatively identifies four aromatic intermediates in the residual fraction, consistent with the limited ring-opening capability of surface-confined 1 O 2 . Overall, this work establishes a unified strategy for organoarsenic remediation by integrating oxidative destruction with quantitative arsenic sequestration, enabling comprehensive contaminant fate accountability in advanced water treatment systems.

A porous LaOCl adsorbent was synthesized via 2-methylimidazole regulation. • It achieves an exceptional phosphate adsorption capacity of 138.85 mg P/g. • It demonstrated remarkable adsorption stability under the PG leachate conditions. • A dual ligand-exchange mechanism was identified for selective phosphate adsorption. • LaOCl rapidly lowered the DTP concentration of PG leachate below 0.5 mg P/L. Phosphogypsum (PG) leachate, characterized by high phosphorus concentration and strong acidity, poses significant environmental risks due to its potential to cause eutrophication and soil contamination. In this study, a hierarchically porous LaOCl adsorbent was synthesized via a 2-methylimidazole-regulated precipitation-calcination strategy. By modulating the La/2-methylimidazole ratio, the crystallinity of the precursor and the porosity of the resulting LaOCl were effectively tailored. The optimized material (LaOCl-1) exhibited a high surface area, abundant mesopores, and exposed active sites, which collectively contributed to rapid mass transfer and an exceptional phosphate adsorption capacity of 138.85 mg P/g. The LaOCl adsorbent also demonstrated remarkable adsorption stability under acidic conditions and high selectivity toward phosphate, even in the presence of common interfering ions in PG leachate, such as F⁻. A dual ligand-exchange mechanism—involving both Cl and OH groups as exchangeable sites—was identified as the primary pathway for selective phosphate adsorption. In practical tests using authentic (or pre-treated) PG leachate, LaOCl rapidly lowered the dissolved total phosphorus concentration below 0.5 mg P/L, complying with strict discharge limits, while maintaining consistent performance over extended durations and under varying conditions. This study underscores an effective regulation strategy for constructing advanced LaOCl-based adsorbents aimed at efficient phosphorus removal from PG leachate.
