The detection of ultra-low concentrations of lithium ions (Li + ) is of paramount importance for protecting human health and preserving the ecological environment. This paper proposes a fiber-optic sensor based on lithium/aluminum layered double hydroxides (Li/Al-LDHs) modified optical microfiber coupler (OMC). Firstly, the optimal diameter of the OMC is determined through simulation analysis to optimize the sensor parameters. Secondly, functional group functionalization is employed to facilitate a robust binding of the Li/Al-LDHs to the surface of the optical fiber. Lastly, the efficacy of the sensor in detecting low concentrations of Li + was validated through experimental means. The results demonstrated that the sensor exhibited a maximum detection sensitivity of 334.222 nm/μM and a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.272 nM within the range of 1–10 nM, exhibiting good linearity (R 2 = 0.986). Furthermore, the sensor displayed excellent stability, selectivity and response time, indicating its potential for application in the detection of Li + concentration in aqueous environments.

The selective extraction of lithium from brine by lithium aluminum layered double hydroxides (Li/Al-LDHs) adsorption is used industrially. To maintain the structural and performance stability of the Li/Al-LDHs adsorbent, the Li/Al-LDHs adsorbent can be doped with some high electron density metals such as Fe(III) and regenerated by dilute Li-containing aqueous solution. In this study, we use Fe(III) doping and FeOOH nanocomposite to stabilize the structure of Li/Al-LDHs. The nanocomposites of Li/Al-LDHs, Fe dopped Li/Al-LDHs (Fe-Li/Al-LDHs), and FeOOH were synthesized by the phase-separated sol–gel method and granulated by using crosslinked alginate polymers. The nanocomposites and granulated nanocomposites were characterized by SEM, TEM, XPS, FT-IR, and XRD analyses. The adsorption–desorption performance of the granulated nanocomposites was evaluated with a single LiCl solution and the brine from Da Qaidam Salt Lake. The isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics parameters and Arrhenius parameters of the lithium adsorption of the granulated nanocomposites were obtained. At the 80% mass loading of the nanocomposites in the granulation, the granulated nanocomposites statically adsorbed 9.46 mg/g lithium and dynamically 8.18 mg/g lithium from Da Qaidam Salt Lake brine. The Fe(III) doping and nanocomposite with FeOOH reduced the dissolution of the Li/Al-LDHs in the granulated nanocomposites and did not negatively affect the adsorption capacity of the granulated nanocomposites.

Lithium aluminum layered double hydroxides (Li/Al-LDHs), the most widely industrialized lithium adsorbents dependent on the unique acid-free desorption, while exhibited limited capacity in low-salinity systems. Herein, an anion regulation strategy was developed to enhance Li + extraction by introducing and controlling multivalent anions. Experiments confirmed Li + adsorption capacity of Li/Al-LDHs could increase from 0.40 mg/g to 5.83 mg/g by introducing SO 4 2− in a chloride solution containing 2 g/L Mg 2+ . It was well explained by density functional theory (DFT) calculations that the highly charged anions in solution would induce higher ionic strength and adsorption energy to enhance Li + extraction of Li/Al-LDHs. Furthermore, an interlayer repair method effectively replaced accumulated divalent anions within the interlayers using easily elutable Cl − ions, facilitating Li + release from the laminates and ensuring cycling stability. Besides, multiple cycles remaining stable enhanced capacities further confirmed the sustained effectiveness of this strategy for boosting Li + capture from low-salinity systems.

Lithium–aluminum layered double hydroxides (Li/Al-LDHs) have achieved successful industrial-scale application in lithium extraction from salt lakes due to their excellent structural stability, high selectivity and environmental friendliness. However, they suffer from limited adsorption capacity. Herein, this issue can be effectively resolved by precise regulation of the LDH nucleation strategy, thereby controlling oxygen species content. The Li/Al-LDHs are synthesized via a one-pot precipitation method, and the nucleation conditions, including Al/Li ratio, crystallization temperature and terminal pH, are systematically optimized through crystal growth analysis, adsorption performance evaluation, and structural stability characterization. The results confirm that the adsorption capacity of Li/Al-LDHs is critically dependent on the pH value attained at equilibrium. Notably, the terminal pH simultaneously governs Al(OH)3 nucleation and Li+ intercalation through oxygen speciation control. The elevated active oxygen content (38.65%) enhances hydrophilicity (contact angle 22.5°) and strengthens lithium-ion diffusion kinetics. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation further indicates that high levels of active oxygen (37.5%) facilitate low formation energy (−3.527 eV) and adsorption energies (−0.739 eV), confirming the correlation between the structure and Li active sites. What's more, the prepared Li/Al-LDHs show outstanding lithium adsorption performance with a maximum adsorption capacity of 13.42 mg g−1 in East Taijinar salt-lake brine. The separation coefficients of Na+, K+, and Mg2+ are 395.86, 140.89, and 121.69, respectively. This study provides vital insights for advancing high-performance aluminum-based lithium adsorbents.

Lithium/aluminum layered double hydroxide imprinted with SO 4 2- (ILDH) was prepared to enhance the lithium adsorption performance in low grade sulfate-type brines. The systematical characterization confirmed the ILDH had a morphology of two-dimensional lamella that was less randomly arranged than the traditional lithium/aluminum layered double hydroxide (TLDH). ILDH demonstrated a significantly enhanced adsorption performance in the long-term adsorption–desorption cycle replying on the excellent structural stability from the imprinting effects compared to TLDH. The adsorption capacity of ILDH was about 3.0 mg/g after 10 cycles, and the column experiments manifested that the Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratio could be significantly declined from 57.99 in the Yiliping sulfate-type brine to 2.36 in the desorption solution with 2.77 mg/g Li + adsorption capacity at room temperature .

Powder Li/Al-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) of Li 2 Al 4 (CO 3 )(OH) 12 ·3H 2 O were hydrothermally synthesized in one pot with sodium alginate as a structure modifier and granulated by crosslinked sodium alginate. The powder and granulated Li/Al-LDHs lithium adsorbents were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, and porosity. The adsorption-desorption performance of the granulated Li/Al-LDHs adsorbents was evaluated. Adsorption isotherm , adsorption kinetics , adsorption thermodynamics were investigated. The effects of solution pH, temperature, and the electrolytes (NaCl, Na 2 SO 4 , MgCl 2 , and KCl) on lithium adsorption, and the dissolution of granulated Li/Al-LDHs adsorbents after cyclic adsorption-desorption were also investigated. The granulated Li/Al-LDHs adsorbed 14.5 mg/g of lithium from the brine of East Taigener Salt Lake with a lithium concentration of 1400 mg/L. The granulation of powder Li/Al-LDHs by crosslinked alginate greatly reduced the dissolution of powder Li/Al-LDHs. The granulated Li/Al-LDHs adsorbents prepared in this report are promising materials for Li + extraction from salt lake brines.
