Lithium ion-sieve with selective adsorption capacity is an important research direction in the field of recovering lithium from brine. The lithium ion-sieve precursor Li 1.6 Mn 1.6 O 4 was efficiently prepared using a combination of the hydrothermal method and solid-phase calcination. Subsequently, a highly adsorbent with high adsorption capacity was obtained through a process involving pickling and Li leaching. The impact of different preparation routes and conditions on both the intermediate product LiMnO 2 and the ion-sieve precursor Li 1.6 Mn 1.6 O 4 were investigated. Under conditions of 25 °C, pH 9, and an initial Li + concentration of 100 mg/L, the initial adsorption capacity and Mn dissolution loss are relatively optimal. After 10 cycles, the adsorption capacity stabilizes at 25–30 mg/g, However, Mn dissolution loss is unavoidable, it stabilizes between 2.0 % and 2.5 %. The selective adsorption of Li + remains effective even in the presence of Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Na + , and K + interference. Li desorption and Mn dissolution loss were investigated using density functional theory, Fukui function, electron orbital theory, and density of states. The introduction of H + during the pickling process induced structural modifications in the ion-sieve precursor Li 1.6 Mn 1.6 O 4 , leading to a decrease in Mn-Mn bonds, Mn-O bonds, and Li-O distances. Initially, Li + at each site of Li 1.6 Mn 1.6 O 4 had an equal probability of being replaced by H + . Subsequent desorption occurred far away from the desorption point. The loss of Mn 3+ in Li 1.6 Mn 1.6 O 4 resulted in an increased electrophilic attack index at the H + substitution site, and the 3d orbital electrons of Mn 3+ migrate to the 4d and 2p orbitals to seek stability.

The demand for lithium-ion batteries in new energy vehicles and energy storage technologies is rapidly increasing, making the efficient extraction of lithium resources from salt lakes, which are rich in lithium reserves, crucial. To address the issues of slow adsorption rate and low adsorption capacity of lithium ion sieves in the adsorption column, In this paper, the high-gravity rotating packed bed (RPB) is utilized for the first time to enhance the adsorption process of Li + on lithium ion sieve composite material(CTS/L-HMO), thereby investigating its adsorption mechanism. Specifically, CTS/L-HMO was prepared by combining manganese-based lithium ion sieves with chitosan, and used as the filler for the RPB to adsorb lithium containing solution. The research showed that chitosan successfully coated the manganese-based lithium ion sieves and the distribution of various elements was uniform. In the RPB, the adsorption capacity of CTS/L-HMO increased first and then decreased with the increase of liquid flow rate and high gravity factor. Compared to a fixed bed, the adsorption capacity and adsorption rate in the RPB increased by 43.30 % and 33.33 %, respectively. After 10 cycles of regeneration experiments, the adsorption capacity of CTS/L-HMO remained as high as 30.19 mg/g, and it exhibited high selective adsorption for Li + .

Li + ion-sieve (LIS) films, foams, or granules have been fabricated to immobilize LIS to overcome powder loss for Li extraction from seawater. However, the practical application is still restricted by their low swelling ability and poor flexibility to withstand harsh marine environment for a long time. Here, a highly elastic interconnected porous LIS nanocomposite hydrogel with tunable pore structure and flexibility, as well as good swelling property, is prepared by using LIS (viz. λ-MnO 2 ) as a pore self-modifier during the in-situ fabrication of polypyrrole (PPy) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) interpenetrating hydrogel (denoted as λ-MnO 2 @IG). In addition to physical confinement interactions, the strong coordination/chelation and electrostatic interactions between λ-MnO 2 nanoparticles and polymer chains enable well-dispersed λ-MnO 2 nanoparticles to be confined in a rich network structure. Even at a marine environment (pH 8.3), the λ-MnO 2 @IG hydrogel exhibits superior Li + adsorption performance (20.6 mg g −1 HMO), outperforming most adsorbents containing LIS. Specially, the porous hydrogel is easily recyclable and exhibits super-stable cyclic Li extraction performance, which are directly attributable to the further-improved pore structure in continuous regeneration process. This study provides a self-regulating strategy to design LIS porous hydrogels with controllable porosity, high flexibility, good swelling ability, and excellent cycle stability to address the growing Li + demanding challenges.

Lithium-ion sieves (LIS) have gained significant interest in lithium recovery from geothermal water . However, the severe loss and low recyclability of the powder adsorbents restrict their practical application. Here, the symmetric mixed matrix membranes adsorbents of LIS (MMMs-LIS) were prepared after doping the dopamine-modified LIS into polysulfone (PSf) matrix by breath figure approach with the characters of low thickness, high exposure area of H 2 TiO 3 (HTO) and high structural stability. The hydrophilic dopamine (DA) would probably promote the condensate water droplets to penetrate PSf matrix and make the smaller HTO/DA preferably emerge on the pore surfaces, accelerating the intercalation of Li + into the vacancies of HTO on the premise of the strengthened interfacial interaction between HTO/DA and PSf matrix. Therefore, the well-designed MMMs processed a comparable Li + adsorption capacity of 25.01 mg·g −1 and an equilibrium adsorption time of 45 min to powdery HTO during the dynamic adsorption process at 298.15 K (C 0 = 25.78 mg·L −1 , pH = 12.0). Moreover, Ti 4+ loss rate of HTO in MMMs decreased from 10.5% down to 1.1% after the first desorption and then gradually alleviated after multiple cycles until stabilized at 2.3%, indicating the excellent structural stability. These results suggest the great potentials of MMMs for highly efficient and sustainable lithium recovery from geothermal water .

The Li 1.6 Mn 1.6 O 4 driven lithium ion-sieve (LIS) is considered as a potential adsorbents for recovering Li + ions from brines owing to their good theoretical adsorption performance and excellent adsorption selectivity. However, the poor cycle stability and the decrease of adsorption capacity resulting from the manganese dissolution loss limit its practical applications. In this work, to mitigate this issue, several novel Al and Cr co-doped manganese LISs were prepared by a facile hydrothermal synthesis method, followed by the acid treatment. The characterization results show that Al and Cr ions are uniformly doped into the spinel crystal structure of LIS, and the introduction of Al and Cr ions can cause the crystal shrinkage, decrease the Mn 3+ content, and raise the mean valence of manganese in the co-doped samples, effectively improving their structural stability. Compared with un-doped ion-sieve H 1.6 Mn 1.6 O 4 , the optimal co-doped ion-sieve H 1.6 Mn 1.54 Al 0.02 Cr 0.04 O 4 with 2% Al doping and 4% Cr doping possesses a higher lithium adsorption capacity, lower manganese dissolution loss, and stronger cyclic stability. Additionally, the H 1.6 Mn 1.54 Al 0.02 Cr 0.04 O 4 possesses a high adsorption selectivity of Li + over Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , K + and Na + . Furthermore, the lithium adsorption is determined to be a chemical and monolayer adsorption process on the prepared LIS. The good lithium adsorption capacity and adsorption selectivity as well as the good recyclability make the prepared Al and Cr co-doped LIS a promising adsorbent for the efficient lithium recovery form brines.
