High Capacity and Superior Cyclic Performances of All-Solid-State Lithium–Sulfur Batteries Enabled by a High-Conductivity Li10SnP2S12 Solid Electrolyte

Jingguang Yi,Long Chen,Yongchang Liu,Hongxia Geng,Li-Zhen Fan

All-solid-state lithium–sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs) employing sulfide-based solid electrolytes have gained widespread attention for their high energy density and intrinsic safety. Li10SnP2S12 is identified as one of the most rivaling candidates in sulfide electrolytes. Herein, a highly Li-ion-conductive Li10SnP2S12 solid-state electrolyte (SSE) is synthesized via a combination of high-energy ball-milling and heat treatment processes, which is more facile and efficient compared with other previously reported methods. The obtained Li10SnP2S12 SSE exhibits high ionic conductivity (3.2 × 10–3 S cm–1) at room temperature (RT). The effects of the annealing temperature on the Li-ion conductivity and activation energy of Li10SnP2S12 are also thoroughly studied. Moreover, the ASSLSBs based on the Li10SnP2S12 electrolyte are constructed, and they deliver a high initial capacity of 1601.7 mAh g–1 at 40 mA g–1. A favorable capacity retention upon cycling and a good rate performance are also achieved at RT. Concomitantly, the Coulombic efficiency approaches 100% during the prolonged cycling. This work tremendously accelerates the practical applications of the Li10SnP2S12 SSE among the emerging high-energy ASSLSBs.

Sb- and O-Cosubstituted Li10SnP2S12 with High Electrochemical and Air Stability for All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Jing Gao,Xiaolin Sun,Cheng Wang,Yuan Zhang,Li Yang,Depeng Song,Yue Wu,Zewen Yang,Takeo Ohsaka,Futoshi Matsumotoc,Jianfei Wu

Graphical Due to the Sb- and O-cosubstitution , the Li 10 SnP 1.84 Sb 0.16 S 11.6 O 0.4 sulfide electrolyte with high ionic conductivity, broad electrochemical window, and high air stability was prepared for high-performance all-solid-state battery. Electrochemical measurement and postmortem analysis of cycled electrodes results revealed that the mechanism of improving cell stability is the inhibition of electrolyte side reaction in the cathode. Sb- and O-cosubstituted sulfide electrolyte was demonstrated to be a promising solid electrolyte for practical all-solid-state battery. The development of solid-state electrolytes with high ionic conductivity, broad electrochemical stability, and high air stability is the key to realizing the practical application of all-solid-state batteries. Herein, Sb- and O-cosubstituted Li 10 SnP 2 S 12 sulfide electrolytes are prepared for the first time. An appropriate amount of Sb and O substitution provides the optimized Li 10 SnP 1.84 Sb 0.16 S 11.6 O 0.4 electrolyte with the highest ionic conductivity of 2.58 mS ⋅ cm −1 at RT. Furthermore, the cyclic voltammetry analysis results demonstrate that the Li 10 SnP 1.84 Sb 0.16 S 11.6 O 0.4 electrolyte displays a broader electrochemical window of 1.4–5.0 V vs. Li + /Li than that of 1.7–2.4 V vs. Li + /Li for the nonsubstituted Li 10 SnP 2 S 12 . Moreover, benefitting from the soft acid Sb 5+ and hard base O 2− dual substitution, the air stability of electrolyte has been improved. Furthermore, the LiNbO 3 @LiCoO 2 /Li−In cell assembled with the Li 10 SnP 1.84 Sb 0.16 S 11.6 O 0.4 electrolytes exhibits a high initial discharge specific capacity of 124.7 mAh ⋅ g −1 at 0.05 C and maintains 85 % capacity retention after 200 cycles at 0.5 C and 25 °C, which is much higher than that of the cell assembled with the Li 10 SnP 2 S 12 electrolytes. XPS measurement results revealed that the mechanism of improving cell stability is the inhibition of electrolyte side reaction in the cathode. Sb- and O-cosubstituted Li 10 SnP 2 S 12 was demonstrated to be a promising solid electrolyte for practical all-solid-state batteries.

Selective Blockage of Li-Ion Diffusion Pathways in Li10SnP2S12: Insights from Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Xinmiao Liang,Li Yang,Youyi Lei,Luyao Qu,Liying Wang,Wuyao Cai,Ke Xu,Yangming Jiang,Biaolan Liu,Jiwen Feng

The fast ionic conductor Li10GeP2S12 (LGPS) exhibits exceptionally high ionic conductivity at room temperature, which is attributed to the two-dimensional (2D) pathways that connect the one-dimensional (1D) Li-ion fast diffusion tunnels. These anisotropic transport pathways for Li ions can be modulated by isovalent substitution of the Ge element by Sn or Si. In this work, we use multiple 7Li and 31P solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ss-NMR) methods to study the effects of Ge substitution with Sn on 1D and 2D Li-ion dynamics as well as conductivity. Like its analogue LGPS, Li10SnP2S12 (LSPS) also exhibits two distinguishing Li-ion diffusion paths, i.e., a 1D channel along the c-axis and 2D ab-plane diffusion, characterized by activation energies of 0.17 eV at low temperatures and 0.13 eV at high temperatures. It is interestingly found that replacing Ge with Sn blocks most of the Li(4)–Li(1) diffusion pathways in the ab-plane and only approximately 10% of the Li(4) sites on average remain active for in-plane Li diffusion. This element substitution, however, does not significantly modulate the 1D in-channel Li-ion diffusion. Such a substitution-induced heavy blockage of the in-plane Li(4)–Li(1) ion diffusion pathways is thus responsible for the reduced room-temperature conductivity of LSPS. Our results provide a new insight toward understanding the structure–conductivity relationship and the strategy of tuning the ionic conductivity.

Enabling superior electrochemical performances of Li10SnP2S12-based all-solid-state batteries using lithium halide electrolytes

Qiyue Luo,Chuang Yu,Chaochao Wei,Shuai Chen,Shaoqing Chen,Ziling Jiang,Linfeng Peng,Shijie Cheng,Jia Xie

Li 10 GeP 2 S 12 shows great potential as solid electrolytes for solid-state batteries due to its ultrahigh Li-ion conductivity. However, the high cost of Ge and the poor stability limit its applications. Replacing Ge with Sn can significantly lower the cost and maintains the high conductivity, while the corresponding Li 10 SnP 2 S 12 still suffers the low interfacial stability with the bare high voltage layered oxide cathodes. Herein, Li 10 SnP 2 S 12 with high Li-ion conductivity up to 4.79 mS cm −1  has been synthesized. All-solid-state battery using the cathode consisting of bare LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 and Li 10 SnP 2 S 12 shows low capacities and poor cyclability due to side reactions between those two particles. To improve the interfacial stability, a highly conductive Li 3 InCl 6 electrolyte is introduced both in the cathode mixture and between the cathode layer and Li 10 SnP 2 S 12 solid electrolyte layer. This new configuration delivers superior electrochemical performances at different operating temperatures. It delivers high initial discharge capacities of 176.1 mAh g −1 , 186.9 mAh g −1 , and 73.7 mAh g −1 at 0.1C when operated at room temperature, 60 o C, and −20 o C, respectively. The superior battery performances are attributed to the excellent electrochemical stability of Li 3 InCl 6 electrolyte towards bare LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 cathode. This work provides a guideline to design Li 10 SnP 2 S 12 -based all-solid-state lithium batteries with high energy density and long span life.

Single-Crystal-Layered Ni-Rich Oxide Modified by Phosphate Coating Boosting Interfacial Stability of Li10SnP2S12-Based All-Solid-State Li Batteries

Xiaohua Li,Zhao Jiang,Dan Cai,Xiuli Wang,Xinhui Xia,Changdong Gu,Jiangping Tu

All-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) adopting sulfide electrolytes and high-voltage layered oxide cathodes have moved into the mainstream owing to their superior safety and immense potential in high energy density. However, the poor electrochemical compatibility between oxide cathodes and sulfide electrolytes remains a challenge for high-performance ASSLBs. In this study, a nanoscale Li 1.4 Al 0.4 Ti 1.6 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) phosphate coating is reasonably constructed on the surface of single-crystal LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 particles to achieve cathode/electrolyte interfacial stability. The conformal LATP layer with inherent high-voltage stability can effectively suppress the oxidation decomposition of the electrolyte and demonstrate chemical inertness to both the oxide cathode and Li 10 SnP 2 S 12 electrolyte. ASSLBs with an LATP-modified cathode exhibited a high initial discharge capacity (152.1 mAh g −1 ), acceptable rate capability, and superior cycling performance with a capacity retention of 87.6% after 100 cycles at 0.1 C. Interfacial modification is an effective approach for achieving high-performance sulfide-based ASSLBs with superior interfacial stability.
