In situ tracking reveals the electrochemical decomposition pathway of Li 2 NiO 2 . • Metal doping stabilizes lattice oxygen and mitigates gas evolution. • Excellent cycling stability: 87% capacity retention at 1 C after 250 cycles. Li 2 NiO 2 (LNO) as a prelithiation additive faces critical challenges including poor rate capability (≤0.1 C), limited capacity, and gas evolution during cycling. Here, we report a metal-dopant lattice engineering strategy that simultaneously addresses these challenges through three synergistic mechanisms: (i) particle size reduction from 30 μm to 500 nm, shortening Li + diffusion pathways; (ii) b-axis lattice expansion (Δb/b ≈ 0.29%) and bandgap narrowing (from 1.2 eV to 0.6 eV), enhancing both ionic and electronic transport; and (iii) strengthened oxygen anchoring via short Cu–O bonds (1.885 Å), suppressing superoxide-related side reactions. Critically, this synthesis employs a one-step solid-state heat treatment using only conventional furnace equipment, directly compatible with existing production lines. The doped LNO (Li 2 Ni 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 2 , designated as LCNO) delivers an exceptional capacity of 492.1 mAh g⁻ 1 at 0.5 C (vs. 282.0 mAh g⁻ 1 for pristine LNO). When integrated into manufacturing-relevant NCM-811‖Si/C pouch cells activated under fast-formation protocols (2 h), LCNO delivers 87% capacity retention (vs. 80% for pristine LNO) after 250 cycles with suppressed gas evolution. Notably, this scalable doping strategy enables industrial manufacturing, bridging the gap from laboratory innovation to commercial production for high-performance prelithiation additives. Cathode prelithium agent is regarded as the most applicable approach to compensate the initial capacity loss in lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Li 2 NiO 2 (LNO) has attracted numerous attention due to its superior environmental stability and reliable synthesis approach. To promote the commercial application of LNO, the understanding of the degradation mechanism induced by air-exposure and finding reliable strategies to improve the air stability are necessary. Herein, by preserving the LNO in different environments (relative humidity of 70 % and 40 %), the surface chemistry evolution of LNO is subtly investigated, which shows Li 2 CO 3 and LiOH cover the surface of the LNO, which decline the Li + diffusion kinetics as well as the charge capacity. What′s more, the slurry turns gel when the LNO exposed to the environment of 70 % relative humidity for 2 days and 40 % relative humidity for 5 days. Facile approaches, including washing the deteriorative LNO with ethanol, reacting the alkali components with H 3 BO 3 , and coating the LNO with Al 2 O 3 are conducted to recover the disabled LNO, which retains 84.2 % of initial capacity. In addition, a coating approach is proposed for the fresh LNO to effectively improve the air stability. This work provides guideline to the commercial application of the LNO. Graphical This work investigates the chemical evolution of LNO under varying conditions of relative humidity and exposure time. Since LNO will fail after two days of exposure to the environment with 70 % relative humidity, strategies to recover the failed LNO and improve the fresh LNO are proposed.

The cathodic pre-lithiation process, currently considered the most feasible resolution to address the irreversible depletion of Li + in dual carbon-based lithium-ion capacitors (LICs), encounters obstacles in widespread adoption due to its substantial dosage requirement, rising decomposition potential and the damage related to its decomposition residues. Hence, in this study, the successful utilization of Li 2 NiO 2 for LIC pre-lithiation is accomplished, leveraging the synergistic effect between Li 2 NiO 2 and lithium difluoro oxalate borate (LiDFOB). It's noteworthy that the full capacitor, entirely composed of commercial materials (activated carbon/hard carbon) and supplemented with 20 wt% LNO +2 wt% LiDFOB, exhibits remarkable energy densities of 98.53 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 31 W kg −1 and 19 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 4.65 kW kg −1 . Moreover, the full capacitor displays commendable performance, demonstrating superior capacitive behavior and excellent high-current cycling proficiency. Besides, electrochemical evaluations and structural analyses unveil that LiDFOB, via solid electrolyte interface (SEI) modification, enhances the utilization of Li + sourced from Li 2 NiO 2 thus avoiding the abuse of pre-lithiation reagents, while the LNO decomposition products contribute substantially to additional capacitance. The synergistic effect of pre-lithiation reagent and SEI modification underpin the outstanding performance witnessed in the full capacitor.
