Li 2 S is highly desired for high energy-density lithium sulfur batteries since it allows to be matched with Li metal-free anodes and alleviates the volume expansion of S cathode. However, Li + extraction from Li 2 S usually suffers from a huge voltage barrier due to its poor electron conductivity and sluggish Li + ion diffusion during activation. In this work, trace sulfone-assisted-NH 4 I is adopted as an electrolyte additive with synergistic dissolution and catalysis effects to alleviate the voltage barrier of Li 2 S. On one hand, the intercalation between sulfone-NH 4 + and Li 2 S turns solid Li 2 S into liquid phase, which significantly speeding up the transport of electrons and Li + ions during activation. On the other hand, I − works as a redox mediator, which further facilitates the oxidation of Li 2 S to polysulfides. By taking the advantages of synergistic dissolution and catalysis effects from sulfone-NH 4 + and I − , the Li 2 S cathode can be activated at ~3.0 V with a very flat plateau. Finally, the Li 2 S cathode cycled in the electrolyte with optimized 0.5% sulfone-assisted-NH 4 I additive shows a high initial discharge capacity of 1160 mAh g −1 at 0.05C, along with enhanced cycling performances and rate capabilities.

Flexible solid-state batteries fabricated by printing techniques are promising integrated power supplies for miniaturized and customized electronic devices. While typically these batteries use polymer solid electrolytes, a flexible Li2S cathode with sulfide solid electrolyte is spray-printed in this work, by using solvated Li3PS4 nanoparticles as inorganic ion-conductive binder. This benefits from a novel low-temperature-sintering property of these nanoparticles, which can be pressure-free densified, along with the desolvation process, and thus bind the cathode at 250 °C. The battery can be stably charged and discharged for 300 cycles with no stacking pressure, and the capacity maintains at 840 mA h gLi2 S–1. We believe this low-temperature-sintering phenomenon of solid electrolyte nanoparticles will open a new path toward the application of sulfide solid electrolytes in printed solid-state batteries.

The extrinsic cathode interface between the sulfide electrolyte and the Li2S electrode is always ignored in all-solid-state lithium–sulfur batteries. However, the aggregation of the Li2S cathode is still observed during cycling. The gradually lost extrinsic contact interface between the cathode and the electrolyte would result in considerable interface resistance and severe capacity decay in the cell due to the lack of efficient electron and ionic conduction at the interface. Herein, a facile dual-doping strategy demonstrates the synthesis of a functional inorganic electrolyte. The obtained Li7P2.9Ce0.2S10.9Cl0.3 glass–ceramic electrolyte shows a higher-lithium-ionic conductivity of 3.2 mS cm–1 at room temperature. Further, UV–vis absorption and ex situ scanning electron microscopy studies confirm robust interfacial adhesion between the functional inorganic electrolyte, Li7P2.9Ce0.2S10.9Cl0.3, and the Li2S cathode. Thus, a stable extrinsic cathode interface is unprecedently built. Finally, the all-solid-state lithium–sulfur battery based on the Li7P2.9Ce0.2S10.9Cl0.3 electrolyte delivers a higher reversible initial capacity of 617 mA h g–1, a lower interface resistance of 25 Ω cm2 and much better cycling stability (with a high capacity retention of 89% after 100 cycles) than the pristine Li7P3S11 electrolyte.

Sulfide electrolytes show great potential as solid electrolytes for all-solid-state batteries due to their high ionic conductivity and low interfacial resistance toward electrode materials. The structure of the P–S framework in the composition of sulfides plays a crucial role in the conductivity. Introducing LiI in the Li3PS4 structure can tailor the P–S frameworks and thus achieve high ionic conductivities. Herein, the dopant of LiI is optimized by high-rotation milling, followed by a sintering route to achieve the highest Li-ion conductivity of 2.3 mS cm–1 for the Li3PS4-50% LiI electrolyte (also denoted as Li7P2S8I) among different compositions. The phase variations and structure evolution of the P–S frameworks in the LiI-doped Li3PS4 electrolytes are carefully investigated in a combination of X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra. All-solid-state Li–S batteries using the prepared Li7P2S8I electrolyte combined with a nano Li2S cathode and a Li–In anode deliver a high initial discharge capacity of 739.7 mA h g–1 and sustain a discharge capacity of 517.7 mA h g–1 after 60 cycles with a capacity retention of 70.0% at 0.13 mA cm–2 at room temperature. When the operating temperature rises to 60 °C, it shows a higher discharge capacity of 862.8 mA h g–1 with fast capacity decay. However, it exhibits stable capacities and superior cycling performance under 0 °C over 70 cycles. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and in situ stack-pressure results find that the electrochemical performance differences of the assembled battery at different operating temperatures are associated with the interfacial resistance caused by volume changes. This work provides the strategy to obtain highly conductive sulfide electrolytes for SSBs and unravels the temperature effects on the electrochemical performance of all-solid-state Li–S batteries.
