Titanium-doped Li3V2(PO4)3 with superhigh structural stability and intercalation rate for electrochemical extraction of lithium

Junyan Zhang,Jiaqi Shen,Haomin Chu,Yingchun Xie,Zhenzhen Jiang,Daolin Gao,Tianlong Deng,Xiaoping Yu

With the rapid development of the new energy industry, the recovery or extraction of lithium from different resources is currently a global research hotspot. In this work, Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 was used as the active component for electrochemical extraction of lithium from aqueous solutions. The results showed that although Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 exhibited the reversible de-intercalation/intercalation of Li + , it suffered from severe irreversible dissolution loss in aqueous solutions. This problem was successfully solved by titanium doping. The experiments and DFT calculations showed that when the V(2)-site vanadium in Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 was replaced by titanium, the resulting material exhibited superhigh cycle stability and lithium extraction rate. After ten cycles of de-intercalation/intercalation, the extraction capacity still reached 11.5 mg·g −1 , and the attenuation was within the error range. Particularly, because of the decrease of the band gap after doping, the electronic conductivity of the material was significantly improved, and the equilibrium time for lithium extraction was within only 5 min, which was more than 10 times faster than that of the conventional LiFePO 4 and Li 2 MnO 4 materials. This work provides a new solution for the green, efficient, and highly stable extraction of lithium from liquid lithium resources.

Rationally designed In3+ doping in Li3V2(PO4)3/C cathodes for enhanced kinetics and cycling stability

Bangqian Wang,Jianjun He,Congcong Zhu,Bangcai Huang,Haijun Chen,Shan Guo,Fuzhong Wu,Guanghui Liu,Yong Deng,Xinyi Dai

The monoclinic Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 cathode demonstrates significant promise for high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) technologies, primarily due to its outstanding energy density and enhanced safety performance. However, its practical application was hindered by inherent limitations, particularly, intrinsically restricted electron mobility and pronounced capacity fading during cycling at voltages exceeding 4.6 V. To overcome these challenges, this study employs a facile sol-gel method to synthesize carbon-coated Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 materials while introducing In 3+ substitution for partial V 3+ sites. Electrochemical evaluations substantiate that the optimal In 3+ doping level of Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (LVP/C-In0.09) exhibits significantly enhanced performance. Specifically, the LVP/C-In0.09 sample delivers remarkable capability, sustaining 131.4 mAh g −1 at 10 C while maintaining 88.4 % of initial capacity after 500 cycles, surpassing the undoped LVP/C sample (initial capacity: 106.5 mAh g −1 ; retention: 75.7 %). XRD analysis indicates that incorporating In 3+ effectively broadens Li + diffusion channels. XAFS characterization reveals that the unit cell expansion is attributed to an increased V-V interatomic distance. Additionally, the controlled In 3+ doping effectively decreases the electrochemical resistance while substantially improving Li + diffusion kinetics. This study proposes a potential strategy to boost the practical application of Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 in LIBs.

Enhanced electrochemical performance of LiVPO4F/C composite with in-situ generated Li3V2(PO4)3 for lithium-ion batteries

Xu Zhang,Jinhua Wu,Shuqian Li,Yi Li,Xiaojie Li,Zhe Zhu,Jianlong Li

The vanadium-containing phosphate polyanion LiVPO 4 F has been attractive as a novel 4 V cathode for lithium-ion batteries. Herein, a hybrid cathode containing two active components of LiVPO 4 F and Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 was successfully obtained by single-step solid-state reaction. The crystalline grains are coated by an amorphous carbon layer of about 8 nm thick. The composite presents reversible capacities of 102.8 and 98.2 mAh g −1 at the rates of 10C and 20C, respectively. Even at an ultrahigh rate of 100C (14.5 A g −1 ), it remains a discharge capacity of 70.1 mAh g −1 with a high average working potential of 3.5 V. After cycled 500 times at 10C, the obtained sample shows a capacity retention of 78.6%, implying outstanding cycling performance. The electrochemical impendence spectroscopy demonstrates that the hybrid cathode delivers higher lithium-ion diffusion coefficient . It is believed that the electrochemical performance is enhanced synergistically by the in-situ generated ionic conductor of Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 . Finally, when charged and discharged at around 4.1 V, the intermediate phase of Li x VPO 4 F is clearly revealed by CV tests, which likely derives from a symmetry phase transform mechanism.

Sc3+-doping effects on porous Li3V2(PO4)3/C cathode with superior rate performance and cyclic stability

Nali Li,Yong Yu,Yanwei Tong,Tiantian Liu,Xuefeng Zhang

An enhanced sol-gel combustion method was used to synthesize different porous Sc 3+ -doped Li 3 V 2-x Sc x (PO 4 ) 3 /C (x = 0.00, 0.05, 0.10 and 0.15) compounds. The substitution of Sc 3+ into the V 3+ sites of Li 3 V 2-x Sc x (PO 4 ) 3 /C expands the lattice volume along with the enlargement of Li + diffusion channel, which is beneficial for Li + transportation and ionic conductivity improvement. Besides, the Sc 3+ doping content exhibits a great impact on the morphology of Li 3 V 2-x Sc x (PO 4 ) 3 /C composite. The pristine Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C are constituted of porous particles and nanorods , and the ratio of nanorods to particles can be controlled by adjusting the amount of Sc 3+ doping since the ratio of nanorods to particles decreases with increasing Sc 3+ doping content. When Sc 3+ doping content increases to a certain level (x = 0.15, Li 3 V 1.85 Sc 0.15 (PO 4 ) 3 /C), the nanorods are hardly seen. Li 3 V 1.90 Sc 0.10 (PO 4 ) 3 /C with higher tapped density, better reversibility, smaller resistance and larger Li + diffusion coefficient demonstrates outstanding rate performance and cyclic stability, together with high specific discharge capacities of 130.2 and 92.9 mAh g −1 at 0.5 and 20 C, respectively. Furthermore, a superior specific discharge capacity of 85.8 mAh g −1 was retained at 20 C following 1000 cycles. Overall, a novel approach for the preparation of high-performance Li 3 V 2-x Sc x (PO 4 ) 3 /C cathodes with different morphologies for lithium-ion batteries is provided.

Jing Su,Xing-Long Wu,Jong-Sook Lee,Jaekook Kim,Yu-Guo Guo

A facile sol–gel approach combined with a carbon-coating technique via high-temperature thermally decomposing C2H2 has been developed for the synthesis of a Li3V2(PO4)3/C (LVP/C) cathode material employing the biomass of phytic acid as an eco-friendly phosphorus source. The effects of the carbon-coating on the structural, morphological and electrochemical properties of LVP have been investigated. Compared with pristine LVP, the LVP/C composite presents a higher discharge capacity of 127 mA h g−1 at 0.1 C, better rate capability and long-term cyclability in the voltage range of 3.0–4.3 V. Even at a high charge–discharge rate of 5 C, it can still deliver a reversible capacity of 107 mA h g−1 over 400 cycles without obvious fading, demonstrating great potential as a superior cathode material for lithium-ion batteries.

F-Doping effects on carbon-coated Li3V2(PO4)3 as a cathode for high performance lithium rechargeable batteries: combined experimental and DFT studies

Jinggao Wu,Maowen Xu,Chun Tang,Guannan Li,Hong He,Chang Ming Li

F-Doping effects on polyaniline-derived carbon coated Li3V2(PO4)3 (Li3V2(PO4)3−xFx@C) as a cathode for high performance Li rechargeable batteries are systematically investigated with a combined experimental and DFT theoretical calculation approach. The results clearly indicate that the doping amount has a significant impact on the rate capability and long cycle life. The optimal material (Li3V2(PO4)2.88F0.12@C) delivers 123.16 mA h g−1@2C, which is close to the theoretical value (133 mA h g−1), while showing a greatly improved cycle stability. Rietveld refinements show that the F− doping does not obey Vegard's Law, which may be attributed to the generated lower valence of V ions. AC impedance spectroscopy shows that the F-doping can achieve faster interfacial charge transfer for higher reaction reversibility. DFT calculations confirm that the lower V2+ (t2g↑)3 does exist in Li3V2(PO4)2.88F0.12, and the mean nearest neighbor Li–O bond length also increases for faster electrochemical kinetics, and further reveal that there is a tendency for a transition from the insulator to the n-type semiconductor due to the F dopant. The combined experimental and calculated results suggest that F-doping indeed greatly facilitates the charge transfer rate of the Li+ insertion/de-insertion process for better reversibility and enhances the Li+ diffusion rate to access the reaction sites, thus resulting in high rate capacity and cycling stability. This work not only offers a facile and effective approach to synthesize high performance Li-ion battery material for very promising practical applications, but also discloses scientific insights on element coating and doping to guide the electrode material design for fast electrode kinetics in energy storage devices.

Lithium poly-acrylic acid as a fast Li+ transport media and a highly stable aqueous binder for Li3V2(PO4)3 cathode electrodes

Anyu Su,Qiang Pang,Xin Chen,Jiajun Dong,Yingying Zhao,Ruqian Lian,Dong Zhang,Bingbing Liu,Gang Chen,Yingjin Wei

Li3V2(PO4)3 (LVP) has been highlighted as a promising cathode material for lithium ion batteries, but it suffers from poor rate capability and rapid capacity decay due to sluggish electrode kinetics and vigorous electrode/electrolyte side reactions at high voltage. In this study, an inexpensive aqueous lithium poly-acrylic acid (LiPAA) binder was developed to deftly solve the shortcomings of the LVP material by tailoring the functional groups in the binder. The good adhesion and cohesion properties of the LiPAA binder ensured a close linkage between the active LVP particles, conductive additives and current collector, which formed a stable and conductive network in the electrode. In addition, the reversible H+/Li+ exchange in LiPAA effectively assisted the transport of Li+ ions at the electrode interface, which allowed the establishment of a Li+ conductive pathway without considerable degradation of the electrolyte. Due to these advantages, the LVP electrode containing the LiPAA binder exhibited significantly improved electrochemical performance compared to the electrode that employed the traditional polyvinylidene fluoride binder. The new electrode configuration showed a large specific capacity of 107 mA h g−1 at 70C rate and a high capacity retention of 91% was obtained after 1400 cycles at 10C rate, showcasing the great potential of this aqueous binder in lithium ion batteries.

Enhancing the high-rate performance of Li3V2(PO4)3/C for Li-ion batteries via a synergistic effect of dual carbon sources

Wang Fei,Liu Xiaoyu,Liu Zhuang,Wang Yanming

The large-scale application of Li-ion batteries requires high-performance cathode materials. Herein, a high-activity Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C composite cathode has been fabricated through a solid-state reaction employing dual carbon sources of poly(acrylic acid) and soluble starch. The effects of single carbon source and dual carbon sources on the physical and electrochemical properties of Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C are analyzed. The porous structure induced by poly(acrylic acid) and highly conductive carbon resulted from soluble starch enable the composite to achieve large discharge capacities and stable cyclability at high C-rates. At 3.0–4.3 V and 10 C, a large discharge capacity of 121 mAh g −1 (nearly 91% of the theoretical capacity) can be obtained, along with high capacity retention of 88% over 1000 cycles. Furthermore, at 3.0–4.8 V, the composite also possesses larger high-rate capacities and better cyclability than other composites prepared using single carbon source. The dual carbon sources bring a synergistic effect to the enhancement of electrochemical performances of the Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C composite.

Performance of 3D Network-Structured LiFePO4@Li3V2(PO4)3/Carbon Nanofibers via Coaxial Electrospinning as Self-Supporting Cathode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Ruixia Chu,Hongtao Zhang,Wanyou Huang,Fangyuan Qiu,Yan Wang,Zhenyu Li,Xiaoyue Jin

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high power, high capacity, and support for fast charging are increasingly favored by consumers. As a commercial electrode material for power batteries, LiFePO4was limited from further wide application due to its low conductivity and lithium-ion diffusion rate. The development of advanced architectures integrating rational conductive networks with optimized ion transport pathways represents a critical frontier in optimizing the performance of cathode materials. In this paper, a novel self-supporting cathode material (designated as LFP@LVP-CES) was synthesized through an integrated coaxial electrospinning and controlled pyrolysis strategy. This methodology directly converts LiFePO4, Li3V2(PO4)3, and polyacrylonitrile (PAN)) into flexible, binder-free cathodes with a hierarchical structural organization. The 3D carbon nanofiber (CNF) matrix synergistically integrates LiFePO4(Li/Fe/POx) and Li3V2(PO4)3(Li/V/POx) nanoparticles, where CNFs act as a conductive scaffold to enhance electron transport, while the POxpolyanionic frameworks stabilize Li+diffusion pathways. Morphological characterizations (SEM and TEM) revealed a 3D cross-connected carbon nanofiber matrix (diameter: 250 ± 50 nm) uniformly embedded with active material particles. Electrochemical evaluations demonstrated that the LFP@LVP-CES cathode delivers an initial specific capacity of 165 mAh·g−1at 0.1 C, maintaining 80 mAh·g−1at 5 C. Notably, the material exhibited exceptional rate capability and cycling stability, demonstrating a 96% capacity recovery after high-rate cycling upon returning to 0.1 C, along with 97% capacity retention over 200 cycles at 1 C. Detailed kinetic analysis through EIS revealed significantly reduced Rctand increased Li+diffusion. This superior electrochemical performance can be attributed to the synergistic effects between the 3D conductive network architecture and dual active materials. Compared with traditional coating processes and high-temperature calcination, the preparation of controllable electrospinning and low-temperature pyrolysis to some extent avoid the introduction of harmful substances and reduce raw material consumption and carbon emissions. This original integration strategy establishes a paradigm for designing freestanding electrode architectures through 3D structural design combined with a bimodal active material, providing critical insights for next-generation energy storage systems.

Li3V2(PO4)3 particles embedded in a N and S co-doped porous carbon cathode for high performance lithium storage: an experimental and DFT study

Jinggao Wu,Canyu Zhong,Xiaofan Chen,Jing Huang

Li3V2(PO4)3 (LVP) coated with N and S co-doped carbon (NSC) was investigated by DFT calculation, suggesting that NSC significantly enhances electronic conductivity and lowers the energy barrier to Li+ migration in comparison to LVP-embedded in pristine carbon. To experimentally confirm the theoretical prediction, three types of LVP particle embedded in N and S co-doped porous carbon (LVP@NSC) materials with various nitrogen and sulfur molar ratios (N : S = 1 : 1, 1 : 2 and 2 : 1) were prepared by a facile freeze-drying-assisted wet chemical route associated with a post-annealing process. When used as a cathode for a lithium-ion battery (LIB), the designed LVP@NSC with N : S = 1 : 2 exhibits outstanding high rate capacities of 124.4 and 107.85 mA h g−1, respectively, at 2 and 20 C in a voltage window of 3.0–4.3 V, and an ultralong cycling stability of 500 times at 20 C while retaining a reversible capacity of 100.22 mA h g−1, possibly due to its smallest charge transfer resistance and highest Li+ migration coefficient, which is in good agreement with the theoretical prediction. This work not only reveals the critical role of an interaction mechanism between NSC and LVP, but also offers great potential for high-energy density LIB applications.

Preparation of Li3V2(PO4)3 as cathode material for aqueous zinc ion batteries by a hydrothermal assisted sol–gel method and its properties

Shiyu Cao,Yanhong Xiang,Qiuling Zou,Youliang Jiang,Hanzhang Zeng,Jian Li,Jianhua Wu,Xiangsi Wu,Xianwen Wu,Lizhi Xiong

To alleviate the depletion of lithium resources and improve battery capacity and rate capacity, the development of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) is crucial. The open channels monoclinic structure Li3V2(PO4)3 is conducive to the transfer and diffusion of guest ions, making it a promising cathode material for AZIBs. Therefore, in this study, nanoneedles and particles Li3V2(PO4)3 cathode materials for AZIBs were prepared by a hydrothermal assisted sol–gel method, and the effect of synthesized pH values was studied. XRD results show that all samples had the monoclinic structure, and the Li3V2(PO4)3 sample prepared at pH = 7 exhibits (LVP-pH7) the highest peak tips and narrowest peak widths. SEM images demonstrate that all samples have the morphology character of randomly oriented needles and irregular particles, with the LVP-pH7 sample having more needle-like particles that contribute to ion diffusion. EDS results show uniform distribution of P, V, and O elements in the LVP-pH7 sample, and no obvious aggregation phenomenon is observed. Electrochemical tests have shown that the LVP-pH7 sample exhibits excellent cycling performance (97.37% after 50 cycles at 200 mA g−1) and rate ability compared to other samples. The CV test results showed that compared with other samples, the LVP-pH7 sample had the most excellent ionic diffusion coefficient (2.44 × 10−12 cm2 s−1). Additionally, the Rct of LVP-pH7 is the lowest (319.83 Ω) according to the findings of EIS and Nyquist plot fitting, showing a decreased charge transfer resistance and raising the kinetics of the reaction.

Electrospun Li3V2(PO4)3 nanocubes/carbon nanofibers as free-standing cathodes for high-performance lithium-ion batteries

Yi Peng,Rou Tan,Jianmin Ma,Qiuhong Li,Taihong Wang,Xiaochuan Duan

Lithium vanadium phosphate Li3V2(PO4)3 (LVP)-based cathodes have attracted much attention in pursuit of high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this study, an ionic liquid (IL) has been introduced into the electrospinning process for the first time, successfully leading to the formation of free-standing cathodes built up of LVP nanocubes embedded in N-doped carbon nanofibers (LVP-NC/NCNF). In particular, the IL plays multiple roles in the resulting free-standing cathodes: (i) the IL improves the feasibility of the PAN-based electrospinning system for preparing electrode materials due to its good solubility, resulting in a self-supporting substrate conductive network with good mechanical properties and electrical conductivity; (ii) the IL can act as a structure-directing agent to induce the formation of (100) facet-oriented LVP nanocubes, giving rise to a convenient lithium-ion transport path; and (iii) the IL adsorbed on the surface of LVP nanocubes can form a N-doped dual-phase carbon coating layer during the heat-treatment process, further enhancing the electronic conductivity of the entire electrode. As a result, LVP-NC/NCNF free-standing electrodes exhibit an outstanding electrochemical performance including a high specific capacity, stable cycling performance and superior rate capability. Specially, the LVP-NC/NCNF free-standing cathodes deliver a high discharge capacity of 143.6 mA h g−1 at 5C for a prolonged cycling life of over 1000 cycles. It is highly expected that this facile IL-assisted electrospinning method can be expanded to other polyanion-based cathodes, thus presenting new opportunities for the design and fabrication of high-performance free-standing electrodes for LIBs.
