Renewable hemicellulose with a unique structure exhibits a wide range of potential applications. However, it has been a formidable challenge to isolate hemicellulose with an intact structure from lignocellulosic materials. In this study, LiBr·3H2O (LBTH) was used as a green solvent for the effective fractionation of hemicellulose from bleached hardwood kraft pulp (BHKP) under mild conditions (25–85 °C). It was found that hemicellulose in BHKP can be dissolved in LBTH with ease and high selectivity owing to the breaking of hydrogen bonds between hemicellulose and cellulose, and the dissolved hemicellulose can be regenerated with a high degree of polymerization (DP) in the range of 240–264 using ethanol precipitation. The highest removal rate of hemicellulose from BHKP was as high as 95.2%, and the corresponding yield of pure hemicellulose reached 84.3%. Moreover, simultaneously obtained undissolved cellulose pulp through LBTH treatment had a high content of α-cellulose (96.7%), high DP (880), and trace levels of Fe (2 ppm), which met the standard requirement for dissolving pulp for the production of lyocell. In addition, LBTH can be easily recycled to guarantee a green and sustainable process. This work provides a new approach for highly selective fractionation of hemicellulose and cellulose from commercial BHKP based on an efficient and environmentally friendly LBTH treatment, which could be very promising for better valorization of hemicellulose and cellulose in many advanced applications.

Dialdehyde nanocellulose (DANC), obtained via periodate oxidation, has been widely used in foods, cosmetics, and biomedical fields due to its unique characteristics. However, the high-crystallinity and tight structure of cellulose retards the efficiency of periodate oxidation for producing DANC. Herein, a novel sustainable and clean approach with less energy consumption and low cost was developed through LiBr·3H2O (LBTH) non-dissolving pretreatment, which can shorten the oxidation time of the followed periodate oxidation and reduce the oxidant consumption. It was shown that the cellulose Iβ structure of hardwood dissolving pulp (HDP) was largely transformed into an amorphous structure after LBTH non-dissolving pretreatment for 30 min, and the corresponding crystallinity of HDP was reduced from 83.2 to 48.7%. After pretreatment for 60 min, the aldehyde group content of the obtained DANC increased by around 30% compared to the control without pretreatment while the operational cost was reduced by 45%. Moreover, the fabricated DANC showed strong antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. LBTH was recovered and reused, and the pretreatment effectiveness was also maintained. This study provides a sustainable, cost-effective, and clean approach for the preparation of DANC and will promote the application of cellulose nanomaterials.

The development of sustainable and effective pretreatment methods to improve the accessibility of cellulose is of vital importance for its utilization. Herein, a novel high-efficiency pretreatment method based on lithium bromide trihydrate (LBTH) was established, which realized the fast improvement of cellulose accessibility under ambient conditions without dissolution of cellulose. The cellulose I structure of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was transformed into amorphous structure just within 5 min of LBTH pretreatment, and the crystallinity was reduced from 79.1 to 19.9%. After pretreatment for 30 min, the BET surface area of MCC increased from 2.1 to 125.9 m 2 /g. Particularly, the pretreated cellulose could be near-completely saccharified to glucose (98.3%) with ultra-low enzyme dosage (2.5 mg protein/g-glucan) just within 24 h, while the conversion of untreated MCC under the same conditions was only 16.7%. Additionally, this non-dissolving pretreatment is beneficial to the separation and recycling of LBTH, guaranteeing a clean and sustainable process.

Furfural is a pivotal intermediate in the biomass conversion. Therefore, the production of furfural from xylose or xylose-rich biomass has received extensive attention. Herein, a series of boron phosphate solid acid catalysts (BPs) were synthesized by self-assembly and high-temperature calcination, and used for the production of furfural from xylose or xylose-rich biomass. The results showed that the synthesized BPs was spherical nanoparticles and containing both Lewis acid and Brønsted acid sites, which was excellent for xylose conversion to furfural. The maximum furfural yield of this work was 82.8 % and achieved through 95.7 % xylose conversion by using 20 mg BP 1.25 at a reaction temperature of 130 °C for 120 min with a LiBr⋅3H 2 O/dichloromethane (DCM) biphasic system. Noteworthy, the recycling experiments indicated that both the BP 1.25 catalyst and the LiBr⋅3H 2 O can be reused at least four times with a furfural yield remaining ≥61.7 %. Last but not least, the prepared BP 1.25 catalyst also displayed high efficiency for xylose-rich natural biomass such as corncob and bagasse conversion into furfural. The work not only developed a new system for easy conversion of xylose into furfural, but also realized the high yield production of furfural from natural biomass without components separation.
