Xinghua Liang,Yujuan Ning,Linxiao Lan,Guanhua Yang,Minghua Li,Shufang Tang,Jianling Huang

The stability and wide temperature performance range of solid electrolytes are the keys to the development of high-energy density all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries. In this work, a PVDF-HFP-LiClO4-Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12(LLZTO) composite solid electrolyte was prepared using the solution pouring method. The PVDF-HFP-LiClO4-LLZTO composite solid electrolyte shows excellent electrochemical performance in the temperature range of 30 to 60 °C. By assembling this electrolyte into the battery, the LiFePO4/PVDF-HFP-LiClO4-LLZTO/Li battery shows outstanding electrochemical performance in the temperature range of 30 to 60 °C. The ionic conductivity of the composite electrolyte membrane at 30 °C and 60 °C is 5.5 × 10−5S cm−1and 1.0 × 10−5S cm−1, respectively. At a current density of 0.2 C, the LiFePO4/PVDF-HFP-LiClO4-LLZTO/Li battery shows a high initial specific discharge capacity of 133.3 and 167.2 mAh g−1at 30 °C and 60 °C, respectively. After 50 cycles, the reversible electrochemical capacity of the battery is 121.5 and 154.6 mAh g−1at 30 °C and 60 °C; the corresponding capacity retention rates are 91.2% and 92.5%, respectively. Therefore, this work provides an effective strategy for the design and preparation of solid-state lithium-ion batteries.Keywords:lithium-ion battery;solid-state electrolyte;composite;electrochemical performance

Enhanced electrochemical performance of solid PEO/LiClO4 electrolytes with a 3D porous Li6.28La3Zr2Al0.24O12 network

Xuelian Fu,Yuchao Li,Chengzhu Liao,Weiping Gong,Mingyang Yang,Robert Kwok Yiu Li,Sie Chin Tjong,Zhouguang Lu

Low ionic conductivity and large interfacial impedance between the electrode and electrolyte are the main bottleneck issues of the current solid electrolytes . In this study, a novel 3D hierarchical solid electrolyte was developed to tackle the large interfacial impedance problem. A flexible polyethylene oxide/lithium chlorate (PEO/LiClO 4 ) was in-situ formed inside the 3D porous Li 6.28 La 3 Zr 2 Al 0.24 O 12 (LLZAO) network by simply using a cleanroom wiper as the template. The obtained 3D LLZAO-PEO/LiClO 4 composite solid electrolyte exhibited a high ionic conductivity of 2.25 × 10 −5  S cm −1 at 30 °C, being 30.7 times higher than that of pristine PEO/LiClO 4 electrolyte. The improved ionic conductivity was attributed to the 3D porous LLZAO structure with continuous fast ion transport pathways. In addition, the 3D LLZAO network can effectively inhibited the growth of lithium dendrite , leading to excellent stability and desirable safety during lithium stripping/plating cycling. Furthermore, the all-solid-state LiFePO 4 /Li battery system based on the obtained 3D LLZAO-PEO/LiClO 4 electrolyte showed a high initial discharge specific capacity of 143.8 mAh·g −1 and a high capacity retention of 86% after 200 cycles at 60 °C. This 3D composite solid electrolyte design is very effective in reducing the interfacial impedance and provides a solution for the further development of high-performance solid electrolyte for all-solid-state rechargeable batteries.

Electrochemical performance of all-solid-state lithium batteries using inorganic lithium garnets particulate reinforced PEO/LiClO4 electrolyte

Samson Ho-Sum Cheng,Kang-Qiang He,Ying Liu,Jun-Wei Zha,Md Kamruzzaman,Robin Lok-Wang Ma,Zhi-Min Dang,Robert K.Y. Li,C.Y. Chung

All-solid-state batteries are proposed to have ultimate safety and higher power and energy densities over conventional lithium ion batteries with liquid electrolytes . The Li ion conductivity and interfacial resistance between electrolyte and electrodes are the major bottleneck of the development of all-solid-state batteries for practical uses. Here, we reported a novel composite electrolyte which is composed of uniform distributed Li ion conducting Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO) fillers in PEO/LiClO 4 matrix. The EO:Li + ratio of 15:1 is being used to achieve lower interfacial resistance between electrolyte and electrodes through the melting process. The composite electrolyte is fabricated by simple solution casting method, which is more advantageous comparing with high temperature sintering or sol-gel method used in the fabrication of ceramic electrolytes. The composite electrolyte exhibits good Li ion conductivity of 4.8   ×   10 −4 Scm −1 at 60   °C and excellent interfacial stability against Li metal. The all-solid-state lithium battery using this composite electrolyte shows a specific capacity of 140mAhg −1 and an unprecedentedly high capacity retention of 83% after 500 cycles at 60   °C and the rate of 1C. It is concluded that good electrode/electrolyte interfacial stability and contact as well as fast Li ion conductivity obtained by the addition of active garnet particulates to PEO/LiClO 4 matrix are essential criteria for good charge/discharge performance of all-solid-state lithium batteries.

Improvement in mechanical properties of NBR/LiClO4/POSS nanocomposites by constructing a novel network structure

Shuyan Yang,Hongbo Fan,Yuanqi Jiao,Zhuodi Cai,Peng Zhang,Yangping Li

The mechanical properties and the possible micro-structure of nitrile-butadiene rubber/lithium perchlorate/polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (NBR/LiClO 4 /POSS) nanocomposites have been investigated thoroughly. The interactions among Li + cations, CN groups and C O C groups bring in a novel network structure consisting of several kinds of effective crosslinks, causing an increase in the glass transition temperature of POSS, as well as in the crosslink contribution ( G c Gc ) and the constraint contribution ( G e Ge ), which facilitates strong interface cohesion between POSS and NBR matrix and a well dispersion of POSS. The addition of POSS not only increases the crosslinking density of NBR/LiClO 4 /POSS nanocomposites , but also improves the 300% modulus and tensile strength greatly. Therefore, a possible micro-structure has been proposed to express the experimental observation.

Toward the Practical and Scalable Fabrication of Sulfide-Based All-Solid-State Batteries: Exploration of Slurry Process and Performance Enhancement Via the Addition of LiClO4

Shenghao Jing,Huaqing Shen,Yuting Huang,Wuqi Kuang,Zongliang Zhang,Siliang Liu,Shuo Yin,Yanqing Lai,Fangyang Liu

Sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) have a wide application prospect because of the advantages of higher energy density and better intrinsic safety over conventional lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The compatibility of sulfide-based electrolytes with various organic solvents and the possibilities of the slurry coating process with these systems remain veiled that limits the large-scale fabrication of sulfide-based ASSBs. In this study, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binder and isobutyl isobutyrate (IBB) are selected as the combination of binder and solvent to achieve scalable slurry process after examining the chemical and electrochemical compatibility of Li 6 PS 5 Cl (LPSC) solid electrolyte, PVDF, and IBB. A comparative investigation of sheet-type LiNi 0.83 Co 0.11 Mn 0.06 O 2 (NCM811) electrodes and pellet-type NCM811 electrodes shows that PVDF hinders the transport of Li + and electron, but it benignantly works as a buffer layer, which alleviates the side reaction in the composite cathode electrode. Further, PVDF is modified by LiClO 4 to facilitate interfacial Li + transport, which improves the capacity retention of the cell at 0.5 C to 97.05% after 100 cycles. Finally, NCM811/graphite full-cell is successfully fabricated by the slurry coating process, which demonstrates the feasibility of practical and scalable fabrication of sulfide-based ASSBs with slurry process and its performance enhancement effect via LiClO 4 modification.

High pressure Raman study of LiClO4

DongFei Li,Shuo Zhang,Hongsheng Jia,Mingxing Song,Ying Zhang,Haibo Li,Mi Zhou

Lithium perchlorate (LiClO 4 ), as one of the new high-energy oxidizers, is chosen for high pressure Raman research to gain a better understanding of the structure and stability, which is very important for the performance of an explosive. Raman spectra of LiClO 4 crystal have been measured from ambient to 25.07 GPa with diamond anvil cells (DACs) at room temperature to investigate the structural stability of this system. Raman vibrational modes of LiClO 4 crystal at ambient pressure were resolved comprehensively on the basis of our experimental and calculated results. Upon increase of pressure on LiClO 4 crystal sample to 1.96 GPa, it was found that the LiClO 4 crystal exhibited a pressure-induced first-order phase transformation behavior. The occurrence of a second phase transformation of LiClO 4 crystal induced by pressure was observed at about 5.09 GPa. Both phase transformations were demonstrated based on the detailed spectroscopic analysis of the variations in the number of lattice modes, splitting of Raman bands and frequency jumps of the Raman vibrational modes of LiClO 4 crystal.

A pomegranate-inspired B@(NH4)2SiF6@LiClO4 architecture for spatiotemporally coordinated boron combustion

Jiayan Liang,Hongyu Zhang,Jian Zhang,Xuwen Wang,Yangming Wang,Hao Bai,Yi Rong,Kaifeng Lin,Debin Xia,Yulin Yang

Pomegranate-like B@(NH 4 ) 2 SiF 6 @LiClO 4 enables ordered boron combustion. • Sequential fluorination–oxidation suppresses oxide re-passivation. • The optimized composite shows faster ignition and stronger flames. Boron suffers from severely limited combustion efficiency due to the kinetic barrier imposed by its native oxide layer. In this work, a pomegranate-inspired B@(NH 4 ) 2 SiF 6 @LiClO 4 composite was fabricated via a two-step solvent evaporation-induced self-assembly strategy, enabling highly dispersed reactive domains and intimate interfacial contact. The distinctive pomegranate-inspired architecture establishes particle-level spatial organization of the reactive components, while their distinct thermal activation windows provide the temporal basis for a proposed spatiotemporally coordinated reaction pathway. TG-DSC and TG-FTIR analyses reveal that fluorine-containing species derived from (NH 4 ) 2 SiF 6 evolve prior to LiClO 4 melting and major oxidizer release, supporting a proposed sequential fluorination-oxidation pathway involving early fluorine-mediated interfacial modification followed by oxidizer-driven boron oxidation. At an optimal (NH 4 ) 2 SiF 6 content of 10 wt%, the ignition delay and combustion duration are reduced by 15.47% and 68.22%, respectively, compared with B@LiClO 4 , demonstrating substantially improved ignition and combustion kinetics. Combined structural, thermal, and combustion analyses support the proposed spatiotemporally coordinated fluorination-oxidation pathway arising from the coupling of particle-level organization and temporally separated thermal events. This work provides a particle-level interfacial engineering strategy for coordinating fluorination and oxidation in high-performance boron-based energetic systems. A pomegranate-inspired B@(NH₄)₂SiF₆@LiClO₄ enables spatiotemporally ordered boron combustion by coupling fluorination and oxidation reactions within confined nanoscale domains. Sequential interfacial activation and molten-salt-mediated oxygen transport promote continuous reaction propagation and suppress oxide re-passivation, resulting in faster ignition, intensified flame propagation, and more efficient energy release compared with conventional physically mixed systems. Solid-state Li metal battery enabled by cold sintering at 120 °C

P. Jiang,P. Guo,Y. Shi,S. Li,K. Li,X.Y. Lu,Z. Zhang,D. He,J. Bian,X. Lu

It is still a great challenge to fabricate dense solid electrolyte with high ionic conductivity using a facile and low-cost method for all solid-state rechargeable battery. In this context, a cold sintering process (CSP) is employed to prepare the ceramic solid electrolytes at an extremely low temperature of 120 °C, significantly suppressing the Li loss and impurity formation by traditionally high-temperature sintering. The low temperature prepared Li 1.5 Al 0.5 Ge 1.5 (PO 4 ) 3 (LAGP)-LiClO 4 (10.0 wt%) composite electrolyte exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 6.35 × 10 −5  S/cm, low activation energy of 0.26 eV and high relative densities of 90%. The Li | CSP LAGP-LiClO 4 (10.0 wt%) | Li symmetric cell delivers a cycling time retention of over 350 h with a stabilized voltage overpotential at a current density of 0.2 mA/cm 2 . Moreover, the high Coulombic efficiency of 99.97% and capacity retention of 150 mAh/g are achieved after 130 cycles at 0.1C in Li | CSP LAGP-LiClO 4 (10.0 wt%) | LiFePO 4 solid cells. These good electrochemical performances are originated from the well-constructed solid electrolyte-electrode interfaces, where the electrochemically active interface demonstrates the powerful self-stabilization function to maintain the tight interface connection as well as the continuous Li ion transport. The CSP method sheds new light on the fabrication of solid electrolytes at a low temperature and inexpensive way, hence provides a rewarding avenue to fabricate better solid-state batteries and other electrochemical devices .

A facile preparation of PEO–LiClO4–fumed SiO2 composite solid-state electrolyte with improved electrochemical performance for lithium-metal batteries

Ruyan Lei,Yanping Yang,Chenjuan Yu,Yinsi Xu,Yuanzhuo Li,Jun Li

In order to improve the electrochemical performance and efficiently prepare a solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) for the lithium-metal battery (LMB), a fumed SiO2 (FS) with surface Si–OH group was used to fabricate FS-modified poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)–LiClO4-based SPE by a facile preparation process. The influences of the FS content on the morphological properties, thermal properties, lithium salt dissociation, mechanical properties, and electrochemical properties of SPE were systematically analyzed. Results indicate that FS with the hydrophilic property was widely distributed throughout the amorphous phase of SPE, thus the crystallinity of SPE was reduced to 25.83% when the FS mass loading was 6.85 wt%. In addition, a greater dissociation degree of lithium salt was achieved after the addition of FS, and a higher ion conductivity of 3.03 × 10−4 S cm−1 and Li-ion migration number of 0.396 were recorded at 60 °C. The all-solid-state Li/SPE/Li coin cell showed excellent stable cyclability (380 h) and the LiFePO4 (LFP)/SPE/Li coin cell demonstrated good discharge specific capacity and coulomb efficiency of 96 mA h g−1 and 100.2%, respectively, after 100 cycles of galvanostatic charge–discharge operation under 0.5C at 60 °C. Thus, based on collective results, it is expected that SPE presented in this work is a promising electrolyte for next-generation high-energy all-solid-state LMB with enhanced safety.

Study of solid polyurethane electrolytes synthesized from HDI and PEO of different molecular weight

Qian Zhang,Yuhao Wen,Kang Liu,Nailiang Liu,Yaping Du,Chunjie Ma,Liang Zhou,Yongri Liang,Yongcheng Jin

The development of solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) is important for the fabrication of safe and high performance lithium ion battery of the next generation. A series of polyurethanes (PUs) based SPEs synthesized from hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) and poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEGs) of varying molecular weight ( MW  = 300 ~ 1500 corresponding to PU03 ~ PU15) via one-step approach are investigated for the conductivity of lithium ion and other electrochemical properties. These synthetic PUs exhibit semi-crystalline structures when the MW of PEG is higher than 300, and turn into amorphous after the addition of LiClO 4 . The ionic conductivity decreases with the increasing concentration of LiClO 4 . The highest lithium ion conductivity was found to be 3.42 × 10 −5 S/cm for PU15 with 10 wt% LiClO 4 at 50 °C. However, its lithium ion transference number is low by 0.15. All of the PU-based SPEs containing 10 wt% LiClO 4 are electrochemically stable up to 4.2 ~ 4.5 V versus Li + /Li, and show very good cycling stability in charge/discharge experiments. In the assembled battery with LiFePO 4 as the cathode, PU15 displays higher performances than PU03, indicating good correlation to the molecular weight of PEG.

Highly conductive and nonflammable composite polymer electrolytes for rechargeable quasi-solid-state Li-metal batteries

Ziyang Dai,Jing Yu,Jiapeng Liu,Rong Liu,Qi Sun,Dengjie Chen,Francesco Ciucci

Solid-state Li-metal batteries are promising as next-generation energy storage devices. However, the main bottlenecks are the poor conductivity of the solid electrolyte and the high interfacial resistance . While polymers exhibit a lower interfacial resistance in comparison to ceramics, they often require the inclusion of flammable solvents. In this work, highly conductive composite polymer electrolyte (CPE) membranes are prepared by integrating a poly(vinylidene fluoride) matrix (PVDF) with a Li-conductive perovskite (i.e., Li 0.38 Sr 0.44 Ta 0.70 Hf 0.30 O 2.95 F 0.05 , LSTHF), a flame-retarding solvent (i.e., trimethyl phosphate (TMP)), and a Li salt (i.e., LiClO 4 ). The CPE membrane with 10 wt% LSTHF (CPE-10) exhibits conductivities as high as 0.53 mS cm −1 at room temperature (RT) and 0.36 mS cm −1 at 0 °C. Furthermore, prototype batteries , including the CPE-10 electrolyte, show high initial discharge capacities, good rate capabilities, and stable cycling performance at either RT or 5 and 60 °C. This study illustrates that including a Li-conductive perovskite and TMP in a PVDF-based polymer material could yield safe, high-performance quasi-solid-state Li-metal batteries capable of operating over a relatively wide temperature range.

A novel poly(ethylene glycol)–grafted poly(arylene ether ketone) blend micro-porous polymer electrolyte for solid-state electric double layer capacitors formed by incorporating a chitosan-based LiClO4 gel electrolyte

Ruiqi Na,Guanze Huo,Shuling Zhang,Pengfei Huo,Yinlong Du,Jiashuang Luan,Kai Zhu,Guibin Wang

A novel strategy was used to prepare a high performance micro-porous polymer electrolyte (MPE) from a poly(arylene ether ketone) (PAEK)/poly(ethylene glycol) grafted poly(arylene ether ketone) (PAEK-g-PEG) polymer composite membrane matrix incorporating a chitosan based LiClO4 gel electrolyte. The morphology, porosity, and thermal and mechanical properties of the PAEK/PAEK-g-PEG polymer blend membrane matrix were investigated. To improve the liquid retention capacity of the MPE, a simple but effective method involving the addition of chitosan was implemented. The effects of chitosan concentration on the liquid uptake and leakage behaviors as well as the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte were also evaluated. The synthesized MPE exhibited an ionic conductivity as high as 8 × 10−3 S cm−1 at room temperature. More importantly, a novel solid-state electric double layer capacitor (S-EDLC) could be fabricated using the synthesized MPE and activated carbon electrodes. For comparison, an EDLC was also assembled using the corresponding aqueous electrolyte and a commercial separator (NKK-MPF30AC-100). Alternating current (AC) impedance measurement results showed that the interfacial compatibility of the MPE and the activated carbon electrodes was high. Meanwhile, the as-prepared S-EDLC showed a specific capacitance of 118.63 F g−1, with an energy density of 7.87 W h kg−1 and power density being 95.97 W kg−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1. Furthermore, the S-EDLC exhibited greater cell-cycling stability after 5000 charge/discharge cycles than did the EDLC, indicating that this novel MPE should be suitable for use in EDLCs and other energy storage systems.
